SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTWith a constantly growing global population and increasing demand for water, food, shelter, energy, healthcare services and economic safety, products made of composite materials help us to improve quality of life while at the same time contributing to the protection of natural resources and the environment for future generations. Every day the composites sector, aware of the importance of sustainable development, searches for solutions to problems as important as waste management. It is estimated that the EU states generate more than 2 million tons of waste in the form of thermal and chemically cured plastics. Polish enterprises specialising in polyester products reinforced with glass fibre produce approx. 2 tons of waste per annum. The issue of recycling of composite materials and products is very complex. High recycling costs and low quality recycling products are major obstacles faced by entrepreneurs from the composites sector. However, thanks to joint efforts ranging from design and produc-tion to end-product management, new technologies of composite materials’ recycling will be more accessible in the future. How is the sector tackling this problem now? What are the recycling options offered by the current state of science and research? We encourage you to read studies from the Kraków University of Technology and the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, which deal with this hotly debated issue.

RECYCLING OF THERMOSETTING MATERIALS AND COMPOSITE PRODUCTSIn 2011 production of fibre glass reinforced polymeric materials reached in Europe 1,049 mln tons. Composite contribution in particular industrial branches has not been changed in years. The biggest contribution has transport – 35% followed by electronics and electro-technic – 14%, sport goods – 14% and other – 2%. Besides fibre glass reinforced composites for the past several years there are also used composites reinforced with carbon fibres. Recycling problem of such materials is waiting to be resolved because the range of application is increasing, also in automotive in-dustry. Composites based on epoxy resins and phenolic ones are mainly applied in aviation industry (29 %) and in windmill rotors (19 %) whereas polyester composites with carbon fibres are mainly used for making boats (18 %) due to good price to performance ratio and also applied in aviation (15 %) and automotive industries, in windmill rotors (17 %), as well as building materials and sport goods.

Composite recycling – current state After a period of large interests in polymer composite recycling (in 90’s of the twentieth century) for over a decade there was very limited research conducted in this area and papers were published rarely. Composite recycling can be divided into mechanical, chemical and thermal, however current approach has been changed. After mechanical recycling introduced by ERCOM Company in Germany has failed, contribution of composite thermal recycling increases gradually. In 2010 the world’s first system for collection and recycling of polymer composites under the name of “CompoCycle” (Zajons Zerkleinerungs, Germany) was created. Companies participated in this system guarantee 100 % thermal recycling. Crushed composites are used as a substitute of raw materials in cement company Holcim. Utilization cost is about 114 EUR/t. After system is going to be spread throughout Europe, 20,000 tons/year of composites is planned to be recycled until 2014. There are, however, small quantities compared to the amount of waste. It is estimated that demand for recycling of reinforced thermosets (Fig. 2) only from windmill blades is up to 60,000 tons/year.

RECYCLING OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Composite materials are usually based on thermosets as well as thermoplastic polymers, rarely on elastomers. Overwhelming majority of composite materials are based on thermo-setting polymers, mainly on polyesters and polyepoxides (approximately 70% of tonnage and 72% of value of world’s composite material production [3]). Recently, trend to develop composites on the base of thermoplastic materials emerged. Thermoplastics are cheaper to mass produce than thermosets while implementation of reinforcement may give them char-acteristics desired in construction materials. The Variety of produced and used thermoplastic polymers is very wide. In contrast to thermosets, their advantages include low material costs, low humidify absorption, high toughness, high impact resistance and easy of proceeding, hence their use leads to decrease mitigation of unit cost. Composites based on thermosets causes significant problems with their future utilization or recycling.

Picture 1. Hierarchy of waste management in accordance with recommendations (directives and decrees) of European Union

Recycling - in accordance with Act regarding waste from 27 April 2001, is recovery which consists on renewed proceeding of substances or materials contained in waste, in produc-tion process in order to obtain material of original or other use.

Recently, in the EU legislation, a tendency to promote recycling rather than other means of recovery such as energy recovery by combustion (in EU directive notion of ‘recycling’ does not include combustion) has emerged. However, matter of classification of different methods (their classification as ‘recycling’ or as different mean of recovery, or as proceeding process leading to recovery) is still a matter of discussion, and each recovery method is analyzed individually. In case of composites filled with glass fibers, every method of recycling or uti-lization is hindered and usually the only alternative is storing them on landfill sites (planes on deserts, sunken fishing vessels, constituent of chimneys or tanks from industrial water treatment sites). In near future, the problem of disposal of worn out wind farm fragments will appear.

Production of polymer composites reinforced with glass fiber in Europe reached 1049 tones in 2011, reaching the one of the highest tonnages in its branch of industry.

EXPO KRAKÓW – ACCORDING TO THE SCHEDULE

The last stages of the demolition works at 53 Centralna Street are underway. This is where the new International Exhibition and Convention Centre EXPO Krakow is going to be launched in Spring 2014. This new trade fair premises in Kraków will be the largest multifunctional facility of its type in the South of Poland. The total investment value is PLN 60 million. The two main halls will be called “Wisła” (5,000 sq.m) and “Dunaj” (4,000 sq.m). The other large halls have been named after the European capitals: Budapest, Lviv, Prague and Vienna. – We wanted to emphasize the international character of EXPO Kraków and its ideal location. Let us look at distances from Kraków to some of the large European cities: Vienna – 470km, Lviv – 330km, Budapest – 390km, Kraków to Prague – 480km. And so apart from our ambitions we have all the advantages that can help us quickly become one of the most important trade-fair and congress centers in Central and Eastern Europe. The city itself will gain in importance and, owing to our business, it will consolidate its position as one of the main business tourism destinations. Even today, the interest in this facility is huge; it is - for example – fully booked for May 2014 – says Grażyna Grabowska – President of Targi w Krakowie.

A world class centre

EXPO Krakow will be one of the most modern trade fair and congress centers in the country. Its two main advantages are multifunctionality and ideal location on the maps of both Europe and Kraków. The centre’s location is close to the city’s circular road and A4 motorway, providing for an easy access from the city centre, main railway station and the Balice airport. In addition to the two large halls, our clients will be able to enjoy a number of air-conditioned, modular conference rooms allowing for any combination suited to specific requirements, 4 meeting rooms, a spacious lobby and a restaurant. It will also be possible to provide for out-door exhibitions. There are plans to build a 700-place car park next to the centre. According to the agreement signed with the contractor RE-Bau the facility is to be commis-sioned in Spring 2014.
