Greetings from Kokomo Schools! The times continue to be exciting for our schools and our community. I am proud of the work being done by our teachers and staff as our school corporation continues to move forward. Your school leaders – including Board members, administrators, and teachers – have spent many hours during my tenure studying some of the top programs and schools in the world. We believe the time is well spent because we recognize the need to provide a range of programs and options, as well as outstanding facilities, for our students and parents. In recent years, the seeds planted through International Baccalaureate (IB), Integrated Arts, STEM, Technology Academies, early childhood expansion, and Career schools are bearing academic fruit, while our facility projects, including new learning spaces and three renovated cafeterias, give both our alumni and current students great pride. 2017-2018 enrollment (February 16 through March 24) at Kokomo Schools is quickly approaching, and we hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities we make available for parents to find the educational program that best fits each student’s learning style. The kickoff is our Kokomo All Schools Education Fair on Thursday, February 16th downtown at Memorial Gym from 5 to 7 PM. Please understand, especially if you are applying to attend one of our Magnet School programs – International Baccalaureate, Integrated Arts, KEY, and 8th-grade Career schools – you must enroll by March 24th to be eligible for early acceptance for the 2017-2018 school year. I hope to see you at both the All Schools Education Fair on February 16th at Memorial Gym, as well as our Early Childhood Education Roundup (Community Preschools, Head Start Preschool, and Kindergarten) Tuesday, February 28th (5 to 7 PM) at Memorial Gym. Thank you for your continued support of Kokomo Schools. Go Kats!

Dr. Jeff Hauswald

Kokomo High School is proud of its culturally-diverse student body, including approximately 40 International students. KHS students learn from each other while experiencing a rigorous and engaging curriculum through a variety of challenging academic programs, as well as co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Our 24 Advanced Placement (AP) courses rival any high school in Indiana, and KHS is authorized as a World School in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program, IB Diploma Program (DP) and the IB Career-related Program. With these great programs in place, and access to career and technical training down the hallway at the Kokomo Area Career Center, KHS students have an incredible number of challenging academic programs from which to choose. KHS also offers a wide range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that provide additional learning experiences.

JoeyHurlocker,KHSgrad,Stanfordsophomore “Kokomo High School set me up for success at Stanford because of all the opportunities it provides students, especially the many AP courses and the diversity of the student body. I have found that the level of work at Stanford has increased exponentially, but the elements it took to be successful at Kokomo High School, are essentially the same at Stanford.”

AdvancedPlacementcourses Kokomo High School offers students 24 Advanced Placement courses, including Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Environmental Science, European History, English Literature/Composition, English Language/Composition, Human Geography, Music Theory, Physics I, Physics II, Spanish Language & Culture, Spanish Literature, German Language & Culture, French Language & Culture, Statistics, Studio Art, Psychology, US Government, US History, and World History. In 2016, 43 KHS students were recognized for being AP Scholars.

RolandoTyler,KHSgrad,Rose-Hulmanfreshman “Advanced Placement (AP) courses were the capstone of my Kokomo High School experience. KHS provided students with so many opportunities to take interesting and challenging courses. I was correct when I assumed these AP courses would stretch my ability. Having taken 11 AP courses gave me the confidence to be successful in post-secondary education.”

LanaPham,KokomoHighSchoolsenior “During my senior year at KHS, I am taking 6 AP courses, but I’ve been taking AP classes since I was a sophomore. While it is a challenge to balance all the rigorous classes with my extracurricular activities, I know that in the end it will make me a more rounded individual. The AP classes expose students to college material with more guidance and assistance from

teachers. One of the best reasons for taking AP classes is the teachers. They are amazing and always are willing to help as long as a student shows they care about their grades and are trying their best. AP courses are challenging, but they come with great benefits.”

KHSInternationalBaccalaureateSchoolsMiddleYearsProgram(9-10)/DiplomaProgram(11-12)

Kokomo High School is authorized as an IB World School, and offers several International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) focuses on the creation of an academically challenging curriculum that connects KHS students to global understanding, and uses the MYP (6-8) at Central Middle International School as its foundation. IB instruction in MYP includes project-based learning, inquiry, assessment through demonstrated growth, proficiency in a foreign language, community service, and communication. International partnerships give MYP students the opportunity to participate in cultural exchanges with England (7th), Chile (8th), Costa Rica (9th), and Spain (10th). The IB Diploma Program (11-12) is academically challenging and prepares students for university work. The DP curriculum consists of six subject groups: Mathematics, Individuals and Society, Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, The Arts, and Sciences. The DP Core consists of Theory of Knowledge; Creativity, Action, and Service; and the Extended Essay.

KennyBurton,KokomoHighSchoolsenior “I have taken 15 Advanced Placement courses at Kokomo High School, and that has allowed me to become more aware of my academic strengths and weaknesses. By grinding through a very difficult and diverse workload, from AP Physics to AP Psychology, I have developed a better idea of potential career fields I hope to pursue in college. Thanks to KHS, I could

not be better prepared for college and life after high school.”

AditiSood,KokomoHighSchoolsenior Participating in KEY (gifted & talented programs at Sycamore and Central), the MYP (IB Middle Years Program), and AP (Advanced Placement) classes have been amazing experiences for me. I feel well-prepared for the rigors of college because the programs at Kokomo High School challenge students to their full potential. I believe my AP and IB

classes helped me earn Semifinalist status in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The time-management skills I have learned at KHS help me both inside and outside the classroom. The variety of extracurricular opportunities have helped me become a well-rounded individual. Kokomo High School truly has something for everyone!”
