KINDY & PRE-PRIMARY MOTHER’S DAY AFTERNOON TEA

Monday 11th May was the Kindy and Pre-Primary Mother's Day afternoon tea. The classrooms were buzzing with

excitement and the children were thrilled to see their Mum/Grandmother/Dad walk through the door. The coffee van from Katanning even came over to make yummy drinks. The classrooms were set up as Mini Beauty Salons where some of the children treated their special visitors with a manicure or pedicure or a massage. The mums got to look around the classrooms and do some activities with their child and then look through the children's portfolios which the children were very proud of. FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Welcome to Week 4 of Term 2 and our annual NAPLAN assessment cycle. In keeping with the instructions for these assessments as set down by ACARA the national managing body, we do not keep copies of student’s test papers nor do we attempt to mark the results. The full set of student results will be provided to us later in the year and an individual student Report will be supplied for each child towards the end of Term 4. What I can tell you, and am happy to do, is to say that the tests have been going very well. Students have been engaged with the process and all are working hard to complete the tasks set. As educators we look forward to the results as they are essential to our on-going planning and development. Sand has arrived in the playground and genuine thanks are owed to several people for making this happen. Emily Hills made the phone calls that linked everyone together; Miotti Transport diverted one of their road trains to cart a full load of 60 cubic metres of sand from Albany to Kojonup; Peter Wright used his smaller truck and skid steer loader to then deliver the sand to the school and spread it and when we get the bill for the sand, the proceeds from the Police Golf Day will pay for almost all of it! This is a wonderful example of a community recognising the role and importance of a school in its future and finding the way to support it. Thank you to all those involved in this exercise. Maintenance work is going on in and around our buildings. Towards the end of the holidays we had new carpet in the passage way and several classrooms. We are just starting a painting program that will also see several classrooms and two passageways painted. Outside we are seeing significant repairs to our rather extensive brick paving. At this moment this is in a variety of smaller areas but shortly we will see the entire front entrance path lifted and re-set. When that occurs we will need to fence the area and ask visitors to enter the school either across the junior primary lawn and into the corridor or by the library and the end of the secondary corridor. Mice are of concern in our classrooms at present (and in truth, have been for a while!) and I have made arrangements with a National company to develop a whole of school solution. The products to be used are designed specifically for schools and will meet both Health Department and Education Department requirements. These baits will be in tamper proof containers placed well away from children. I am hopeful that this will occur within the next week. “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow”. FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde McIvor NAPLAN This week the Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students have been working extremely hard to complete the Australia wide NAPLAN testing. I would like to congratulate all the students on their outstanding effort during this time. Parents will receive their child’s results in approximately mid-September. Cross Country & Adidas Fun Run The Cross Country & Adidas Fun Run will be held on Tuesday 19

th May. All students are expected to participate in the

event to demonstrate good sportsmanship. The event will take place starting behind the Pre-Primary building and ending on the Primary Oval where the faction shelters and tables will be provided. Please make sure you order a sausage sizzle to help support the Year 8/9 camp. All presentations, individual and champion faction, will take place on the day from approximately 12:40pm. This year we are hosting the first Inter-School Cross Country event with six schools participating. I would like to congratulate Mr Ringrose on his tremendous effort for organising this event and I am sure it will run very smoothly. If you are able to lend a hand on the Inter-School Cross Country day please contact Mr Ringrose. 20

th Anniversary Speech & Drama Festival

FROM THE CHAPLAIN – Vicki Webb What do YouthCARE Chaplains do in schools? YouthCARE Chaplains provide pastoral care in public schools in WA. We are there to support the whole school community, particularly in times of need. Individual appointments with a chaplain can be requested by parents, teachers or students themselves to talk through issues. This could include friendships, bullying, home and family life, grief and loss and self-esteem. The Chaplain’s role is to help children build resilience and life skills to work through these issues and often children just need someone independent and confidential to chat with while they regroup. From this term Chaplaincy will operate at KDHS all day on Wednesday and for half days on Mondays and Thursdays. The Chaplaincy room will be open at lunch times on these days for high school students. I will spend recess times in the primary area and primary classes will be invited to come to the Chaplaincy room during school for an activity based around a classroom or playground issue. Breakfast Club is run by the Kojonup YouthCARE Council and growing in popularity. It operates from the Chaplaincy room every Monday and Thursday morning. The attendance for last term was up to 35 on most days and included students, parents and staff. All are most welcome and if you know anyone who would like to volunteer to help, please let me know. I can be contacted by phone or text 0429 323 025, email [email protected] or leave a message at the school office.

LIBRARY NEWS The pick for the week for Lower Primary HOW BIG IS TOO SMALL? By Jane Godwin & Andrew Joyner Poor Sam always gets left out of his big brother’s games because he’s too small. This vibrant picture book takes a different approach to the concept of big and small and focuses on showing the reader how everyone and everything is as big or small as it needs to be. The pick for Middle & Upper Primary STUFF HAPPENS: LENNIE By James Roy Stuff happens sometimes. Everyday stuff. For Lennie it happened when he argued with a teacher. Lennie likes facts. He likes hearing them, reading them, watching shows about them. So when Lennie thinks the class relief teacher, Mr McDonald, is wrong about a fact, he says so and refuses to believe otherwise. When Lennie discovers he’s made a mistake, he learns a lot about himself and also about Mr McDonald. Lennie joins Ned, Michael, Jack, Sean, Ethan, Fadi and Cooper in our ‘Stuff Happens’ series.

It’s not okay to be away … nor to be late to school. At Kojonup DHS the morning blocks of learning are dedicated to Literacy/Numeracy so it is important that all students arrive at school in time to commence their learning in these vital areas of their education. When students miss school, not only is their academic progress impeded, forcing them to catch up on missed work (which some never do), they often miss important interactions with their peers which can compound issues of social isolation and low self-esteem.

WANTED – OLD TRAILER FOR SCHOOL FARM The School Farm is after an old trailer, any condition. We are after the hitch, axles, wheels and springs in particular to make ourselves a fine trailer. If you are able to help please contact the front office, 9831 2300.

GENERAL LUNCHBOX TIPS Encouraging Healthy Habits Childhood is a time for learning, especially new habits. Children who grow up in families that eat nutritious food are more likely to make healthy choices when they are older. Some tips for teaching your whole family to make healthy choices include:

Choose healthy foods for home and school from the five food groups including: fruit, vegetables, dairy, meat/legumes, and grains/cereals

Save ‘sometimes’ foods such as chocolate, cake for special occasions and not in lunchboxes

Provide a variety of types and colours of fresh vegetables and fruit that are in season

Enjoy reduced fat varieties of milk, yoghurt and cheese once kids are 2 years or older

Eat mainly wholegrain cereal foods and breads

Drink water instead of sugary drinks (don’t introduce cordial, energy drinks, sports drinks, fruit drinks, vitamin waters or soft drinks)

Eat a healthy breakfast every day

Learn about foods including how they are grown and where they come from

Try new foods and recipes and get the kids to help with cooking and preparing meals

Turn off the TV and computer during meal times to make these family time

Wash hands before eating or cooking

By physically active - play outside, walk the dog or go for a run in the park. Source: Healthy Eating for Children Brochure (Eat for Health, 2013)

HOSTING A FRENCH STUDENT/ TEACHER 2 OR 4 WEEKS

(20TH

JULY - 18TH

AUGUST 2015) For the last nine years a programme has been in place offering the opportunity to young French students aged 16-17 years to discover Australia and its education system. The purpose of the programme is for the French student to experience living with an Australian family, to see how an Australian school operates, to improve their English language skills through this full immersion and to create a strong friendship with their Anglophone peers. The programme is highly successful and both Australians and French students greatly enjoy the exchange. Many families still keep in touch with each other. He/she will be fully covered by appropriate insurance. Please contact Martine Floyd, email: [email protected], 0403 019 609 if you are interested in hosting.
