Professional technology for use on site and on the shop floor

Switchgear devices are situated at the key points of electrical energy transmission and distribution systems. Their reliability has a decisive influence on the availability, safety and economic efficiency of electrical supply networks.

The reliability of new switchgear devices initially depends on their construction, the manufacturing quality and the type and scope of final factory inspections and tests. However, once in-stalled on site, only regular tests can guarantee the perfect func-tioning of a switchgear device in the long term.

The automatic test systems of the ACTAS series can determine and check the major electrical and mechanical parameters of all types of switchgear equipment. They provide precise information as to the state of the switching chamber and drive unit through-out the entire operational life of a switchgear device, without requiring them to be opened. The universal modular concept be-hind the ACTAS test systems makes it possible to deliver exact-ly the right solution for any specific application, from portable starter devices through to professional solutions for fully auto-mated final factory tests.

Measuring devices for stringent accuracy requirements

The high-precision ohm meters of the PROMET series can accu-rately determine very low electrical resistances in the µΩ range. Typical applications include measuring the contact resistance of switchgear devices, testing bus bar structures and checking welded joints and earth connections.

Resistance measurements can point to the existence of eroded contacts or loose connections in the contact system as well as serving a number of other purposes. Regular measurements make it possible to identify maintenance requirements at an early stage, keeping unplanned equipment down times to a minimum.

PROMET ohm meters deliver an adjustable test current of up to 600 A which is independent of the supply voltage. They utilize the four-wire resistance measurement method, enabling them to meet the most stringent accuracy requirements. State-of-the-art power electronics coupled with a robust design guarantee excel-lent reliability for use as a portable device in switching stations and industrial environments.

Systems for complex test tasks

The purpose of power system protection is to use accurate and reliable protection equipment to recognize faults in the supply system promptly and without fail and to minimize impairments to the power supply by selectively switching off faulted sections of the power system.

The test systems of the ARTES product line are used to carry out functional tests on various protection devices, including DT/IDMT relays, distance protection relays and differential protec-tion relays, to ensure that they function correctly.

With up to four voltage and six current outputs, ARTES test sys-tems make light work of even highly complex tests on static, digital and self-powered protection relays, without additional equipment. Test values are calculated and tests controlled with the aid of the ARTES software which is ergonomically designed and can be operated intuitively.

Powerful solutions for exacting requirements

The latest generation of electricity meters offer great improve-ments in accuracy and functionality compared with their prede-cessors of just a few years ago. This has resulted in more complex requirements for the tests which are necessary to ensure that they function correctly.

The meter test systems of the METES series can be used to check the correct functioning of Ferraris meters and electronic electrici-ty meters in 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire circuits and to analyse a.c. systems. As well as measuring meter accuracy, METES test sys-tems can also investigate network disturbances, display signal shape and analyse harmonics extremely precisely.

In addition to an extensive range of portable meter test systems, the METES product line also boasts a variety of fully automatic stationary multiple-meter test benches.

The new benchmark in power quality measurement

Whatever processes are currently underway in your power system, the power quality analysers of the EPPE series will register even minor disturbances or alterations.

Not only the reliability of supply, but also the quality of electrical power is of prime importance for the smooth operation of tech-nical equipment used in industry, medicine and electronic data processing. For this reason, power quality is increasingly being brought into play as a major price consideration. It is therefore imperative for both energy providers and end users to monitor and log power quality constantly.

The measuring systems of the EPPE series continuously and pre-cisely record all the electrical parameters of the power supply. They deliver detailed quality evaluations which reveal even the smallest of deviations and contribute to identifying the cause of disturbances.

Precise time synchronization of the measuring systems via GPS allows the measured data of a number of different devices to be consolidated in order to comprehensively monitor an entire supply system.

The network detectives

The measuring devices of the SHERLOG range are ideal for detecting, recording and evaluating all types of network distur-bances in low, medium and high voltage networks.

In view of the growing number of factors with a disturbing influ-ence on power systems, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the reliability of electricity supply networks as determined by the frequency and duration of outages (black-outs).

SHERLOG measuring systems are used throughout electricity supply networks - from the power station through to the end user - to monitor network activity continuously and perform detailed fault analyses. The measured data can be used to help re-store network operation efficiently and effectively if a fault occurs and provides planners of installations and protection equipment with the information they need in order to extend networks and optimise the reliability of supply.

SHERLOG measuring systems are invaluable when it comes to establishing who is liable for a system disturbance and who should meet the costs involved.

Maximum power and high signal precision

High-accuracy three-phase power sources are becoming increas-ingly important in many areas of electrical engineering and nowhere is this more evident than in the fields of measurement and test technology. Signal generation directly from the grid via transformers is no longer adequate for the purpose of either operating or testing many electronic components and devices.

The power sources of the EPOS series are the ideal solution whenever there is a need for absolutely precise signals with very low levels of harmonic distortion, freely selectable signal shapes and a high level of power.

Specifically for the purpose of testing meters, EPOS sources are equipped with an interface for connecting the METES 340 REF reference standard, making it possible to use the reference stan-dard to exercise fully automatic control directly on the source.

Fast, high-precision laser triangulation

The exact position of the ceramic filter within the housing is of decisive importance for the durability of catalytic converters for cars. Premature damage may result if the filter is fixed too loose-ly or too tightly. The popular OMCat Catalytic Converter Measur-ing System provides a fast and efficient means of carrying out complex geometrical measurements and determining the gap bulk density (GBD) of catalytic converters for cars.

The measurement results are automatically passed on to manufacturing machinery for production process control. The high speeds attained by the non-contact laser triangulation measurement method allow 100% in-line quality control within the canning or stuffing process. Various different models are available, enabling this system to meet the specific requirements connected with the manufacture of both catalytic converter substrates and exhaust systems.

Because OMCat systems measure so precisely, they have a significant impact on the durability of catalytic converters. So it comes as no surprise that many car manufacturers require their suppliers to use OMCat measuring systems.

Light-sectioning technology for three-dimensional edge geometry measurements

The manufacture of the silicon wafers used for the substrate of all microprocessors, for example, calls for very high production accuracy and an ultra-clean production environment.

The WGI 300 Wafer Geometry Inspector can carry out fully au-tomatic, non-contact measurements of the edge profile and di-ameter of 300 mm silicon wafers.

The edge of the wafer, which is important for wafer handling and the photo-resist coating process, is inspected to SEMI stan-dards. The WGI 300 is the only measuring system currently on the market to use light-sectioning technology to make measure-ments in the area of the notch, a mark cut into the edge of the wafer to indicate the crystal orientation.

Because of its high measurement accuracy of approximately 1.5 µm, leading wafer manufacturers across the world use the WGI 300 Wafer Geometry Inspector for shop-floor geometrical quality control.

In-line inspection systems for the packaging industry

Improving quality is a primary consideration in food manufac- turing. An important method of preserving food without resorting to chemical additives is vacuum packaging. However, if the packaging is defective, foodstuffs may spoil long before the given expiry date.
