Since we launched our safety program ,”We are committed to safety”, in the autumn of 2009, we have put in considerable efforts on land and at sea to improve our HSE performance. We are now beginning to see the results of this work. The majority of vetting operations conducted recently have been very good. I would like to thank the employees for their dedicated efforts. It is essential that we keep a steady course, and that we don’t forget that we are committed to safety. Four years ago the world was in a deep recession. A year ago we saw some relief, but now there is a full-

scale setback. The financial crisis is far from over, and because of the banks’ increased capital adequacy requirements it is hard for shipping companies find funds to finance projects. Our four newbuildings are fully funded. It is now one and a half year since we teamed up with our Japanese partners in NYK. We have developed close and smooth working relations with NYK, and I’m very pleased that this partnership came about. Those who feared that cultural difference between the Japanese and us would be an obstacle have come to realize that the fear was ungrounded. On the contrary, the cultural differences have turned out to be an asset. The partnership has already born fruits in the form of new contracts and contracting of new ships.Whereas shuttle tankers and LNG vessels are doing ok, we are struggling fourth year in a row in a depressed chemical and product market. Three of the four newest ships are on charter parties, while we are trying to get the oldest part of this fleet into new projects.However, we may rejoice at a very positive market within LNG and offshore loading. We are going to strengthen our efforts in these markets in the future. In addition to this, we will further expand our offshore operations where our DP experience will be of great use.We also hope to become the first shipping company to carry an LNG-cargo across the Arctic Ocean from west to east, and are waiting in anticipation for this to happen. It is, however, a matter for our charterers to decide, but we are ready.On the positive side I would mention that our technology department has been established as a separate company and has moved into a building of their own. We have great expectations in Knutsen Technology. We rest assured that our technology for treatment of ballast water will be certificated this summer, we believe it is the best and cheapest solution.Office staffs have also been very busy, working on a number of large projects; the PNG projects, rebuilding of the Elisabeth Knutsen and Hanne Knutsen into FSOs, and rebuilding of LNG vessels from steam to dual fuel. These projects will require considerable efforts throughout the autumn.It has been a busy first part of the year. I would like to thank all employees at sea and on land for their contribution, and I wish each and every one of you a great summer.

Siden vi høsten 2009 lanserte vårt sikkerhetsprogram ”We are committed to safety”, er det lagt ned mye bra arbeid fra ansatte på land og sjø innen sikkerhet og HMS. Nå begynner vi å se resultatene. De aller fleste vettinger som vi har hatt den siste tiden har vært svært gode. Jeg vil takke de ansatte for det arbeidet som er lagt ned. Det er viktig å fortsette på denne kursen, og ikke glemme at ”we are committed to safety”. For fire år siden var verden inne i en dyp krise. Selv om vi for et års tid siden merket lettelse, er tilbakeslaget kommet for fullt. Finanskrisen var langt fra over, og bankenes krav til økt egenkapital vil gjøre det meget vanskeligere for rederiene å få finansiert prosjekter. Våre fire nybygg er finansiert.Det er nå halvannet år siden vi inngikk samarbeidet med våre japanske partnere i NYK. Det har utviklet seg til et nært og godt samarbeid, og jeg er meget glad for at dette kom i stand. De som fryktet at kulturelle ulikheter mellom oss og japanerne skulle bli et hinder, har sett at frykten var ubegrunnet. Tvert om har kulturforskjellene vært en fordel. Samarbeidet har allerede båret frukter i form av nye kontrakter og bestilling av nye skip.Om det går bra for bøyelasterne og LNG-skipene, sliter vi på fjerde året med et tungt kjemikalie- og produktmarked. Tre av de fire nyeste skipene går på certeparti. Den eldste delen av denne flåten forsøker vi å få inn på andre prosjekter.Vi kan imidlertid glede oss over at markedene innen LNG og offshorelasting er svært positive. Vi vil i fremtiden styrke vår innsats mot disse markedene. I tillegg vil vi videreutvikle operasjoner offshore hvor vår DP-erfaring kommer til nytte.Vi håper også å bli første rederi som tar en LNG-last over Polhavet fra vest til øst, og venter med spenning. Det er imidlertid en sak for våre chartrere, men vi er klare.En av de positive tingene dette halvåret er at vår teknologiavdeling er blitt eget selskap, og er flyttet til eget hus. Vi har store forventninger til Knutsen Technology. Vi regner med at vår teknologi for behandling av ballastvann blir sertifisert i løpet av sommeren, vi mener dette både er den beste og rimeligste løsningen.På kontoret er det også lagt ned et omfattende arbeid med en rekke store prosjekter. Det gjelder PNG-prosjekter, ombygging av Elisabeth Knutsen og Hanne Knutsen til FSO’er. I tillegg gjelder det ombygging av LNG-skip fra steam til dual fuel. Dette er prosjekter som vil kreve stor innsats også utover høsten.Første halvår har vært travelt. Jeg vil takke alle ansatte på sjø og land for innsatsen, og ønske hver enkelt en god sommer.

Eni – pioner på norsk sokkel

Da borekrona til Transocean Arctic på høsten i år 2000 boret seg inn i olje- og gassførende, lag dypt under havbunnen på Tromsøflaket, startet et arktisk eventyr som vi til nå bare har sett begynnelsen av. Det var Norsk Agip som oppdaget det vi i dag kjenner som Goliat-feltet, og i 2004 skiftet selskapet navn til Eni Norge.

Lisenshaverne har besluttet at feltet skal bygges ut, og i løpet av neste år skal oljeproduksjonen etter planen starte. Det første oljefeltet på nordnorsk sokkel byr på store utfordringer for Eni og deres mange samarbeidspartnere. En av disse samarbeidspartnerne er Knutsen NYK offshore Tankers (”KNOT”).

til Knut’n.Den blide sørlendingen har bakgrunn fra bøyelaster- og riggmiljø, med fortid både i Navion og Smedvig.- Men jeg har arbeidet i Eni Norge de siste 10 årene. Det norske miljøet er ikke så stort, slik at vi stort sett kjen-ner hverandre innenfor fagmiljøer som transport av olje fra offshore instal-lasjoner. En av dem jeg har arbeidet sammen med i Navion er Jon Einar Dalsvåg i KNOT, så jeg gleder meg til samarbeidet med KNOT fremover, sier Tangvald, og sammenligner utviklingen av bøyelastere med det som har skjedd på riggmarkedet.- Nye generasjoner borerigger har kommet til og avløst de gamle, og de nyeste kalles nå 6. generasjons rigger. De to bøyelasterne som KNOT bygger i Korea er tilpasset de tøffe forholdene vi møter så langt nord. Det er en ny generasjon bøyelastere som skal takle utfordringene arktisk klima byr på, både når det gjelder arbeidsmiljø og hensynet til en sårbar natur, sier Tangvald.

BanebrytendeBøyelasteløsningen på Goliat er bane-

brytende og ny på mange måter. Goliat-plattformen vil bare ha en lastetilkob-ling, mens det vanlige har vært at man har to for geostasjonære innretninger. Det gav noen utfordringer som vi har løst i samarbeid med Sevan Marine, som har designet Goliat-plattformen. Med kun en tilkobling vil tankskipene alltid ligge på den samme ”siden” av plattformen. I forhold til ulike vindret-ninger skal bøyelasterne kunne dreie omtrent hele sirkelen rundt. 250 meters avstand til plattformen betyr at de ikke behøver å ligge med baugen mot platt-formen, noe som reduserer mulighetene for kollisjon. Utbyggingen av Goliat er beregnet å koste rundt 30 milliarder kroner, Eni og Statoil fordeler kostnadene ut fra den eierandelen de har (65 % Statoil, 35 % Eni).- Selskapene har ansvaret for transport av sin egen olje, slik at vårt ansvar er å sørge for tankere som kan ta vår andel av oljen. Som operatør skal vi se til at alle tankerne som brukes tilfredsstiller de krav som gjelder for Goliat.

Eni – pioner på norsk sokkel

When the drill bit on Transocean Arctic in the autumn of year 2000 drilled into oil and gas-bearing layers deep below the seabed at Tromsøflaket, it was the start of an arctic adventure of which we only know the beginning. It was Norsk Agip that discovered the field known today as the Goliat field. In 2004 the company changed its name to Eni Norge.

The licensees have decided to develop the field, and oil production will according to plans start up next year. The first oil field in North Norwegian waters offers considerable challenges for Eni and its many partners, one of whom is Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT).

Setting standards- The new shuttle tankers that will be carrying oil from Goliat are the most advanced in the world. Eni and Statoil, together with KNOT, are setting the standards for upcoming operations in the Barents Sea, says the head of the Goliat Development Project, Tor B. Tangvald, to Knut’n.The jovial southerner has a background from shuttle tankers and offshore rigs, having worked for both Navion and Smedvig.- But I’ve been with Eni Norge the last decade. The Norwegian oil community is not that big, so in general people working within offshore oil transport

Satt langt inneGoliat-utbyggingen var en av de største som ble vedtatt i 2009. Oljeprisen var da på det laveste (under $50), slik at beslutningen satt langt inne, forteller Tangvald.

Før Eni ble operatør for Goliat-feltet var det ikke så mange utenfor oljemiljøet som kjente til selskapet. Men Eni var ett av de første internasjonale oljesel-skapene som viste interesse for norsk sokkel, og om tre år kan de feire 50-års jubileum i Norge. Som lisenshaver i Ekofisk og en rekke andre funn rundt om på norsk sokkel har de produsert olje og naturgass siden eventyret i Nord-sjøen begynte midt på 60-tallet.

- På hovedkontoret her på Forus og avdelingen i Hammerfest har vi over 400 medarbeidere, mens Eni-gruppen totalt har 80.000 medarbeidere i 79 land. Mange av de som jobber i Norge

er tilknyttet Goliat-prosjektet. Avdelin-gen i Hammerfest kommer til å bestå av mellom 40 og 60 medarbeidere på land, mens 120 vil jobbe offshore på Goliat.2. april i år kunne Eni notere seg for nok en milepæl. Da ble de det 12 olje-selskapet med egenproduksjon på norsk sokkel. Marulk-feltet hvor selskapet er operatør, bygges ut med to brønner, og gassen leveres til Norne-skipet som Sta-toil opererer. Den neste store utfordrin-gen blir igangsettingen av Goliat.

Strøm fra landDet er ikke bare gjennom bøyelaster-løsningen Goliat er banebrytende. Det settes flere rekorder på Finnmarks første oljefelt.Vanlig til nå har vært å produsere elek-trisitet til å drive plattformene om bord. Goliat skal ha strøm fra land i kombina-sjon med en gassturbin generator. Den 105,5 km lange vekselstrømskabelen mellom Hammerfest og Goliat er ikke

bare verdens lengste i sitt slag men har også høyest overføringskapasitet. Det er beregnet at CO2 utslippene fra Goliat reduseres med 50 % ved å bruke strøm fra land. Miljøgevinsten ved å bruke fornybar energi er stor.- Det settes også en del rekorder i forbindelse med dette, sier Tangvald, og viser oss et tverrsnitt av kablene som skal forsyne plattformen med kraft fra land. Det er imponerende størrelse.

Satser i nordFor Eni Norge er satsingen i nord mye mer enn Goliat. I sommer skal selskapet bore to nye letebrønner i Barentshavet. Den ene er på Salina-feltet, som ligger i nærheten av funnene på Skrugard og Havis, mens den andre er på det som kalles Bønna-prospektet. Bønna ligger 100 km vest for Vannøya i Troms, og begge er regnet som meget spennende prosjekter.

know about each other. A person I wor-ked with in Navion is Jon Einar Dalsvåg of KNOT, and I’m looking forward to cooperating with KNOT in the future, Tangvald says, comparing the develop-ment within shuttle tankers with what has taken place in the rig market.

- A new generation of drilling rigs has replaced the old, with the newest be-ing called 6th generation rigs. The two shuttle tankers that Knutsen is build-ing in Korea are adapted to the tough conditions that we meet so far north. It is a new generation of shuttle tankers

equipped to tackle the challenges of an arctic climate as concerns working environment and a vulnerable exterior environment, Tangvald says.

PioneeringThe shuttle tanker solution on Goliat is pioneering and new in many respects. The Goliat platform will only have one loading system connection, while it has been most common to have two for geo-stationary installations. This gave some challenges that we have resolved in cooperation with Sevan Marine, who designed the Goliat platform. With only one connection, the tankers will always lie on the same ”side” of the platform. However, the tankers will be revolving almost full circle and will be able to carry out offloading operations independently of the wind direction. With a 250-m distance to the platform it means that the bow does not need to face the platform, which reduces the risk of collision. The Goliat development is estimated at a price of 30 billion NOK, and Eni and Statoil are sharing costs with basis in their respective ownership interest in the field (65 % Statoil, 35 % Eni).- The companies are responsible for transporting their own crude, which means our responsibility is to provide for tankers that may carry our share of crude. As field operator we have to verify that all tankers satisfy the requi-rements that apply to Goliat.

Reluctant decision The Goliat development was one of the largest to be adopted in 2009. The price of oil was then at its lowest ebb (under $50), which means it was a rather relu-ctant decision, Tangvald reports.Until Eni became operator of the Go-liat field, not many people outside the oil community had heard of the com-pany. However, Eni was one of the first international oil companies to show an interest in the Norwegian Continental Shelf, and it will in three years be able to celebrate its 50-year anniversary in Norway. As a licensee in Ekofisk and a number of other finds in the Norwegian offshore sector, it has been producing oil and natural gas since the North Sea oil era started in the mid 1960s.- At the main office at Forus and at the Hammerfest branch we have a staff of over 400, while the Eni group globally has a workforce of 80,000 located in 79 countries. connected by gangway to FPSO P-50 operating on the Brazilian shelf.So when M/T Recife Knutsen hooked up to start loading oil, Careus picked up his camera to send a greeting to his old colleagues in Knutsen OAS Shipping.

count between 40 and 60 employees onshore, while 120 will be working offshore on Goliat.2 April this year Eni crossed yet another milestone, when it became the 12th oil company with its own production on the Norwegian shelf. The Marulk field, where the company is operator, is being developed by two wells, and the gas is supplied to the Norne vessel operated by Statoil. The next major challenge will be the commissioning of Goliat.

Power from shore It is not only the shuttle tanker solution in Goliat that is path-breaking. Several records are being set on Finnmark’s first oil field.Until now it has been customary to produce onboard the electricity needed to operate platforms. Goliat will get power from shore in combination with a gas turbine generator. Not only is the 105.5-km long AC power cable between Hammerfest and Goliat the longest of its kind in the world, but it also boasts the highest transmission capability. It is estimated that CO2 emissions from Goliat will be cut by 50 % by using power from shore. There is considerable environmental gain in using renewable energy.- Some records are also being set in this connection, Tangvald says, showing us a cross-section of the cable that will be supplying power to the platform. The size is impressive.

Northern venture To Eni Norge the northern venture is much more than Goliat. This sum-mer the company is going to drill new wildcats in the Barents Sea, one on the Salina field near the finds on Skrugard and Havis, and the other on what is called the Bønna prospect. Bønna is lo-cated 100 km west of Vannøya in Troms county, and both are considered very exciting prospects.

M/T Bodil Knutsen aktuell for Goliat

Da M/T Bodil Knutsen ble levert fra veftet i Sør Korea for et års tid siden, var den verdens mest avanserte bøyelaster. Selv om det fortsatt ikke er noen andre skip som kan gjøre henne rangen stridig som dronningen blant shuttletankerne, går det mot ombygging av den avan-serte bøyelasteren.

- For tiden ser vi på hva som må gjøres for å tilpasse skipet til de kravene som gjelder for operasjon på Goliatfeltet i det nordlige Norskehavet. Når det er klart regner jeg med at modifiseringene må gjøres i løpet av ett års tid. Da er Bodil klar til operasjon på Goliat samtidig med de to bøyelasterne vi skal bygge for for Goliat-operasjonen, sier nybyggings-direktør Hans Tveitaskog til Knut’n.De to nybyggene, som er chartret av Eni, skal leves henholdsvis i juli og sep-

tember neste år. De er på 123.000 Dwt hver, mens ”storesøster” M/T Bodil Knutsen er på hele 162.000 Dwt.- Hvor ombyggingen av M/T Bodil Knutsen skal skje er foreløpig ikke be-stemt. Flere verft er aktuelle.Det er flere utfordringer som venter for skipene som skal frakte olje fra Goliat-feltet. Ettersom fartøyene skal kunne operere i temperaturer så langt ned som 35 minusgrader, er det krevende winterization-arbeider som skal til. I likhet med Bodil vil de to nye skipene få en egen trunk langs hele fordekket fra innredningen til baughuset. Her vil alle oljerør være innendørs i en kontrol-lert atmosfære. Det betyr at risikoen for utslipp langt på veg er eliminert.Også for mannskapene har dette stor betydning. Man kan foreta alle arbeids-operasjoner i forbindelse med lasting av olje i normal temperatur. Både arbeids-

miljømessig, sikkerhetsmessig og av hensyn til miljøet er dette en stor fordel.

De tøffe værforholdene man vil oppleve på Goliat stiller også ekstra krav til DP og trustere. En ting som er spesielt er at skipene skal kunne operere selv om de ikke har baugen rettet mot Goliat-platt-formen. Kravene til Goliat-tankerne er at de skal kunne laste olje selv om skipet dreier nær 360 grader rundt kompass-rosa.

Skipene er svært godt utrustet. Mye av utstyret er dublert slik at om noe skulle svikte, vil ikke det føre til at det opp-står kritiske situasjoner. Skipene har to propeller på hver sin aksling, og kraftige thrustere både foran og bak. Det gjør bøyelasterne våre i stand til å takle de krevende forholdene man finner utenfor kysten av Finnmark, sier Tveitaskog.

M/T Bodil Knutsen candidate for Goliat

At the time of being delivered from the yard in South Korea about a year ago, the M/T Bodil Knutsen was the world’s most highly sophisticated offshore loading tanker. Even though no other ships can still measure up to her as the queen of shuttle tankers, things are now moving in the direction of conversion of the sophisticated offshore tanker.

- We are currently looking at what needs to be done to adapt the ship to the requirements in effect for operation on the Goliat field in the northern part of the Norwegian Sea. Once it becomes clear what needs to be done, I expect the modifications will have to be made in the course of one year, thus making the Bodil ready for operation on Goliat at a time parallel to the two offshore loading tankers we are going to build for our Goliat operations, Newbuild Director Hans Tveitaskog says to Knut’n.The two new ships, chartered by Eni, are scheduled for delivery in July and

September of next year, and each measures 123,000 Dwt, whereas their ”big sister” M/T Bodil Knutsen is an impressive 162,000 Dwt.

- Where the conversion of the M/T Bodil Knutsen is going to take place has not been decided yet. Several possible shipyards are being considered.Several challenges are in store for the ships that are going to transport oil from the Goliat field. Since the vessels are to be able to operate in temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius, highly demanding work of winterization is involved. Just like the Bodil, the two new ships will be equipped with a separate trunk along the entire foredeck from the interior section to the bow house. All oil pipes will here be kept indoor in a controlled atmosphere. This means the risk of spill and discharge has largely been eliminated.Also for the crew, this is of great importance, i.e. being able to perform all work operations in connection with oil loading at normal temperatures. This must be considered a great

advantage both from a working environmental, environmental and safety point of view.

The rough and hostile weather conditions one is going to experience on Goliat also pose special demands on DP and thrusters. One element quite unique is the fact that the ships are going to be able to operate even if their bow section is not aimed at the Goliat platform. The design requirements for the Goliat tankers are for the ships to be able to load oil even if the ships rotate a near 360 degrees around the compass card. The ships are very well equipped. A lot of the equipment has been duplicated, which means that if something were to fail, this is not going to lead to critical situations arising. The ships have two propellers on two independent shafts, and powerful thrusters both in the forward and stern section of the ship. This enables our offshore loading tankers to deal with the demanding conditions faced off the coast of Finnmark, Mr. Tveitaskog says.

Byggingen i gang i Korea

På Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) produseres skip nærmest på samle-bånd. I løpet av sommeren vil den første av de fire bøyelasterne som Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers har bestilt ruve i byggedokken.

- I månedsskiftet mai/juni var 45 av de 165 blokkene som den 157.000 Dwt store bøyelasteren skal bestå av, produsert. 11 av disse var ferdigmalt, og en av de første dagene i juni vil verftet begynne å sette blokkene sammen i byggedokken, fortalte Ingve Hognaland fra rederiets site office til Knut’n.Skipet, som er verftets byggenummer 2518, skal gå for det spanske oljeselskapet Repsol. Levering skal etter planen finne sted 28. desember i år.De to neste nybyggene skal seile for Eni, som er operatør på Goliatfeltet nord for kysten av Finnmark. De er på 123.000 Dwt hver, og skal leveres henholdsvis 26. juli og 30. september neste år.Den 4. tankeren som er bestilt er på 112.000 Dwt, og skal seile for ExxonMobil. Etter planen skal den leveres 31. oktober 2013.

Construction in progress in Korea

The Azimuth thruster astern is fitted on to newbuild 2518 in Korea. A separate, specially constructed hydraulic lift enables a lot of time to be saved during installation.

At Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), ship fabrication is made virtually on an assem-bly line basis. This summer will see the first of the four offshore loading tankers, commissioned by Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers, tower up from the building dock.

”By the turn of the month of May/June, 45 of the total of 165 blocks for the 157,000 Dwt large offshore tanker, had been fabricated. 11 of these had been painted to completion, and one of the first days of June will see the yard commence the work of assembling the blocks in the building dock,” Ingve Hognaland of the company’s Site office says to Knut’n.The ship, carrying yard building number 2518, will be in service on behalf of the Spanish oil company Repsol. Delivery is scheduled for 28 December of this year.The next two newbuilds will be sailing on behalf of Eni, the operator of the Goliat field, north of the coast of Finnmark. Each is a 123,000 Dwt, scheduled to be delivered on 26 July and 30 September of next year.

The 4th tanker commissioned is a 112,000 Dwt, and will be in service on behalf of Exxon-Mobil. The plan is for the ship to be delivered on 31 October 2013.

Det var på høsten i fjor. Elektrik-erassistent Henry Bonghanoy (33) fra Cebu på Filippinene var på vei til Danmark for å mønstre på MT Hanne Knutsen.

Hjemme på Filippinene var kona Lavilla Bonghanoy dagsventende med parets andre barn. Under en mellomlanding fikk Henry beskjed om at fødselen var i gang.- Da hadde jeg mest lyst til å snu og dra hjem, men det var naturligvis ikke ak-tuelt. En kontrakt på seks måneder om bord betyr tross alt inntekt og levebrød for oss fire. Men det var godt å vite at alt så ut til å gå bra, sier han til Knut’n. Vi traff tobarnsfaren en fin februardag i Haugesund om bord i Hanne Knutsen.Lille Bruce Wayne Bonghanoy var i mel-lomtiden blitt tre måneder, men hadde fortsatt ikke sett pappaen sin.- Men jeg har sett ham på Facebook, og jeg gleder meg til at turnusen er over, og

jeg kan reise hjem igjen, fortalte han da Knut’n traff ham i februar.Livet som sjømann synes Henry er et godt liv, men det er klart at det er et savn å være borte fra familien såpass lenge om gangen. - Men når en har vært borte i et halvt år er det desto bedre å komme hjem igjen. Lille Bruce Wayne vet jo ikke at han har en pappa som seiler på et kjempesvært skip på den andre siden av jordkloden. Men storebror Clark Kent (6) spør stadig om det er lenge til pappa kommer hjem, sier han.Om noen stusser over at navnene til de to guttene til elektrikerassistenten på Hanne Knutsen lyder kjent, er ikke det så rart.- De er kalt opp etter de to filmidolene mine, Supermann (Clark Kent) og Edderkoppmannen (Bruce Wayne), sier han.Da Knut’n intervjuet sjømannen fra Cebu var det ikke bare de to guttene

som ventet på at Henry skulle komme hjem. Selv om ekteparet har vært gift noen år, gjensto det kirkelige bryllupet som var fastsatt til 5. mai.

- Jeg har flere søsken, og skikk og bruk hjemme tilsier at to fra samme søsken-flokk ikke har kirkebryllup i det samme kalenderåret. Derfor har vi ”stått i kø”, men når jeg kommer hjem blir det stort kirkebryllup. Jeg gleder meg enormt, forteller han.Når dette leses er det et par måneder siden den store begivenheten, og tids-punktet for å seile ut på ny seksmåne-ders kontrakt nærmer seg.

- Jeg trives godt om bord på Knutsen-skipene. På bøyelastere må jeg ha kurs blant annet på DP for å kunne seile som elektriker, så jeg planlegger å ta kurs for å kvalifisere meg til dette, forteller han til Knut’n.

Papa on Facebook

It was autumn last year. Henry Bonghanoy, an electrical assistant from Cebu in the Philippines, was on his way to Denmark to sign on to the M/T Hanne Knutsen.

He left his wife, Lavilla Bonghanoy, at home in the Philippines, waiting to give birth to the couple’s second child. On a stop over, Henry got the message that the birth had started.”Right then, I really just wanted to turn around and go home, but of course, that wasn’t possible. Despite everything, a contract of six months on board means income and a living for the four of us. But it was good to know that everything was going well,” he told Knut’n. We met the father of two one fine February day in Haugesund on board the Hanne Knutsen. Little Bruce Wayne Bongha-noy had in the meanwhile grown to be three months old; but he still hadn’t seen his father.

”But I’ve seen him on Facebook, and I’m looking forward to the end of the tour of duty when I can travel home again,” he told Knut’n in February.Henry thinks life as a seaman is a good life, but it is certain that he misses his family while away for such a long time. ”After having been away for half a year, homecoming is even better. Little Bruce Wayne doesn’t know that he has a papa that sails on a huge ship on the other side of the world. But his big brother, Clark Kent (6), asks constantly how long it will be until Papa is home,” he says.

If anyone is wondering about the names of the sons of the electrical assistant on Hanne Knutsen, it isn’t that odd. ”They are named for my two comic book idols, Superman (Clark Kent) and Batman (Bruce Wayne),” he says.When Knut’n interviewed the seaman from Cebu, it wasn’t only the two boys

who awaited Henry’s homecoming. Even though the couple has been mar-ried for some years, the church wed-ding, which is scheduled for the 5th May, awaits them.

”I have several siblings, and customs at home say that only one among bro-thers and sisters in a family can have a church wedding during a calendar year. Therefore, we’ve been in line for this. But when I get home there will be a big church wedding. I am really looking forward to it,” he says.When you read this, it will be a couple months after the great occasion, and the time to ship out again on a new six-month contract approaches.

”I enjoy myself on board the Knutsen ships. I have to have a DP course to be able to sail as an electrician on offshore loaders, so I plan to take a course to qualify for this,” he tells Knut’n.

At rederiets store bøyelastere besøker Haugesund, er ikke noen daglig foreseelse. Så da Hanne Knutsen besøkte byen for et verkst-edopphold, var dette en fin anledn-ing både for ansatte på kontoret å få se hvordan det er om bord, samtidig som mannskapet hadde anledning til et besøk på hovedkon-toret.

For mange av kontoransatte var det første gang de var om bord på et av rederiets skip. Det var således en fin anledning til å få se hvordan det er om bord på en stor bøyelaster.Om bord sørget kaptein Robert Rafael-sen og hans folk for at det ble omvis-ning. Samtidig var det hektisk aktivitet siden det var mye som skulle gjøres de få dagene MT Hanne Knutsen var i Haugesund.

Having the company’s large off-shore tankers call at Haugesund is not exactly an everyday occurrence. So when the Hanne Knutsen called at the city for a stay in the repair yard, this marked a nice opportu-nity for employees at the shipping office to see what it is like on board, this while the crew had an opportu-nity to pay a visit to the head office.

For many among the office workers, this was the first time on board a company ship, and a good opportunity to see what it is like on board a large offshore tanker.On board the ship, Master Robert Rafaelsen and his staff made sure to organise a guided tour of the ship. The visit concurred with bustling activity on board since there was a lot to be done in the few days the MT Hanne Knutsen stayed in Haugesund.

En styrmann vender hjem igjen

- Folk har gjerne lett for å tro at graset er litt grønnere på den andre siden av gjerdet. Det trodde jeg også da jeg for et lite år siden mønstret av fra M/T Anna Knutsen, og prøvde meg om bord i et offshore konstruk-sjonsfartøy.

Det tok ikke mange månedene før jeg lengtet tilbake til Knutsen og bøyelas-terfarten.Arnt Petter Tangjerd fra Kopervik er kommet ”hjem igjen” , og trives om bord i M/T Hanne Knutsen. Vi treffer ham på broa. Det vrimler av verksted-folk fra Aibel som er travelt opptatt med å feste løsnede takplater etter at Hanne Knutsen hadde fått kraftig juling

i orkanen som traff dem på vei over Nordsjøen.Et ekstra stopp i Haugesund gir en an-ledning til å ha kona på besøk om bord for de som bor nær Haugesund.- Kona mi er fra Filippinene, og kunne ikke komme på besøk i dag ettersom hun er oppe til eksamen i norsk, sier han.Tangjerd forteller at det ikke tok lang tid å finne ut at han ville tilbake på bøyelastere. - Selv om det var et ønske om å få prøve noe nytt som fikk meg til å skifte beite, fant jeg fort ut at livet på et konstruk-sjonsfartøy blir svært kjedelig. Det består som oftest av å ligge i ro og vente. Det ligger ikke for meg, sier Tangjerd.

I sine 12 år som sjømann har det stort sett vært Knutsen-tankere han har seilt på. Først som kadett da han kom ut fra høyskolen, og deretter gradene oppover til overstyrmann.Sjøfartsboka forteller at han har trødd til der det har vært behov. - I tillegg til Hanne har jeg seilt med Anna, Elisabeth, Tordis, Gerd, Jorunn og Tove, forteller han.Da han kom tilbake etter ”sidespranget på konstruksjonsfartøyet” ble han mot-tatt med åpne armer.- „No hard feelings”. Det var en åpning som overstyrmann jr. her på Hanne, så det passet bra, sier Tangjerd til Knut’n.

”People tend to believe the grass is a bit greener on the other side, and so did I as I - nearly a year ago - signed off from the M/T Anna Knutsen to have a go at serving on board an offshore construction vessel. It didn’t take many months for me to wish I was back at Knutsen and the offshore loading trade.”

Arnt Petter Tangjerd from Kopervik has returned ”home” , and enjoys life on board the M/T Hanne Knutsen. We meet up with him at the bridge. The place is teeming with workshop hands from Aibel, busily engaged in work of se-curing roofing sheets which came loose in a recent hurricane that whipped the ship on its way across the North Sea.

An extra call at Haugesund makes it possible for those living close to Hauge-sund to have their wife come and visit them.”My wife is from the Philippines, and was unable to come and visit me today since she is sitting for a Norwegian exam,” he says.Mr. Tangjerd says it didn’t take long for him to find out he wanted to get back to an offshore loading tanker. ”Even though it was a wish to try something new that drove me to going somewhere else, I soon found out life on board a construction vessel gets very tedious, and mostly consists of lying in position - waiting. This sure isn’t my ‘cup of tea’,” mr. Tangjerd says. His 12 years of sailorship has mostly

been on board Knutsen tankers, initially as a cadet on finishing college and then working his way through the ranks to Chief Officer.

His discharge book shows that he has stepped in to fill vacancies wherever there has been a need for it. ”Besides the Hanne, I having been sailing on the Anna, Elisabeth, Tordis, Gerd, Jorunn and Tove,” he goes on to say.On coming back, after his ”side leap to work on board a construction vessel”, he was received with open arms.”No hard feelings. There was a vacancy as Chief Officer jr. here at the Hanne, which was very convenient indeed,” mr. Tangjerd says to Knut’n.

- Det er klart at det er stas å bli valgt ut til å være en av de fire ka-dettene som Knutsen OAS tar inn. For meg var det enkelt. Jeg ville på bøyelastere, og her er Knutsen best, sier Roger Saltveit til Knut’n.

Bekreftende nikk fra Håkon Spanne, Ivar Hellevik og Knut Andreas Gaard forteller at også de er fornøyd med å komme gjennom nåløyet. For det er et nåløye, sier Ben Jensen på rederiets maritime personellkontor.- Vi har hatt ganske mange inne til samtaler, og disse fire skilte seg ut som de vi ville satse på. Når vi nå har færre opplæringsstillinger for norske kadetter enn tidligere, blir valget desto viktigere.

Alle har lokal tilknytning til Rogaland, noe som vi legger vekt på fordi vi også ser for oss at folkene kan være en ressurs som vi kan benytte her på kontoret, sier Jensen.Tre av de fire dekkskadettene kommer fra fagskole. Ivar Hellevik, som bor i Stavanger, gikk på fagskolen i Vestfold, mens Roger Saltveit og Knut Andreas Gaard går ut fra Karmsund Videregå-ende i disse dager. Disse har hatt praksis om bord, og kjenner derfor sjølivet.Håkon Spanne har gått det andre ut-danningsløpet for framtidige skipsoffise-rer, studie i nautikk på Høgskolen Stord Haugesund. Med unntak av en måned i ferien er det nå livet som sjømann begynner for Spanne.

Spenningen var stor da de ferske kadettene midt i juni fikk vite hvilke bøyelastere de skulle om bord i. Saltveit og Gaard skal om bord i M/T Bodil Knutsen, Hellevik skal seile på Hanne Knutsen, mens Spanne begynner som kadett på Karen Knutsen.- Men vi har lagt et løp hvor alle fire etter planen skal om bord på noen av de nye bøyelasterne som er under bygging i Korea, sier Jensen, som gav kadettene følgende formaning.- Dere kommer om bord på skip som gir ulike utfordringer, og dere skal seile sammen med dyktige sjøfolk. Benytt tiden til å suge til dere all den kunnska-pen dere kan få.

- Naturally, I’m thrilled to have been selected as one of four cadets that Knutsen OAS is taking in this year. For me this was simple. I wanted to be on a shuttle tanker, and here Knutsen is the best, Roger Saltvedt says to Knut’n.

Håkon Spanne, Ivar Hellevik and Knut Andreas Gaard nod in agreement, they are also mighty pleased to have passed through the needle’s eye. Because it is indeed a needle’s eye, says Ben Jensen at the shipping company’s maritime person-nel office.- We had quite a few candidates in for an interview, and these four stood out as the ones we wanted to give a chance. Filling training positions is an important choice

for Knutsen OAS. They all have a local af-filiation to Rogaland, which is also a good thing when we need resources here at the office, Jensen says.Three of the four deck cadets are educa-ted at vocational college. Ivar Hellevik, who lives in Stavanger, attended vocatio-nal college in the county of Vestfold, while Roger Saltvedt and Knut Andreas Gaard are graduating from Karmsund upper se-condary school these days. They have had work practise onboard, so they are familiar with life at sea.Håkon Spanne has attended the second path of education available to future ship’s officers, nautical studies at the Stord Hau-gesund College. With the exception of one month holiday, life as a sailor for Spanne is starting now.

The new cadets were quite excited when they in mid June were told on which shuttle tanker they would serve. Salt-vedt and Gaard are going onboard M/T Bodil Knutsen, Hellevik will be sailing on Hanne Knutsen, while Spanne starts as a cadet on Karen Knutsen.- However, we have provided for a plan where all four of them will sail onboard some of the new shuttle tankers being currently built in Korea, Jensen says, who gave the cadets the following admonition.- You will embark on ships that provide different challenges, and you will be wor-king with able seamen. Take the opportu-nity to soak up all the knowledge you can get.

Positiv tilbakemelding i Manila

I mars arrangerte Knutsen OAS Shipping den første konferansen for filippinske offiserer siden dattersel-skapet Knutsen Philippines Ltd ble etablert i Manila. Av de 1400 sjøfolk-ene i Knutsen OAS flåte er over 60 prosent filippinere.

De filippinske offiserene mottok klapp på skulderen fra rederiets representanter for å ha skapt meget gode resultater på fire sentrale områder i 2011. De fire områdene er helse, sikkerhet, kvalitet og miljø.I tillegg til hele ledelsen og staben i Knutsens filippinske bemanningssel-skap, deltok både Administrerende Direktør Trygve Seglem, HR-Direktør Arne Fylkesnes, Safety & Security Manager Lars Hanøy, Flåtesjef John Helland og Vetting Manager Hilmar Lund Andersen.Lars Hanøy gav i sitt innlegg på konfe-ransen ros til mannskapene på rederiets skip for det som ble oppnådd på sikker-

hetssektoren i 2011.De to programmene ”Aktivt lederskap” og ”We are Committed to Safety” har blitt godt mottatt om bord, sa Hanøy. Han presenterte HMS-resultater som var svært positive.- Det har vært forbedringer når det gjel-der personskader, og vi har lykkes med vår 0-filosofi med hensyn til utslipp. Vi kan også notere en rekke forbedringer når det gjelder KPI’ene. Det er gjort en god jobb om bord. Med noen få unntak har KPI-målene blitt nådd og vel så det både på bøyelastere, LNG-tankere og produkttankere.Det er rederiets beste resultat siden vi innførte KPI-systemet i 2003, sa en fornøyd Hanøy.I Manila var det knyttet store forvent-ninger til Trygve Seglems tale til delta-kerne. Seglem redegjorde for utviklin-gen i rederiet, og spesielt samarbeidet med Japans største rederi, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). Dannelsen av det nye offshorerederiet Knutsen NYK Offshore

Tankers (KNOT) har styrket rederiets nærvær i en blomstrende offshoreindus-tri.Seglem fortalte deltakerne om et ambi-siøst byggeprogram for å erstatte eldre skip med nye som oppfyller alle nye krav fra myndigheter og marked.- Vi vil minst bygge to nye skip hvert år de neste tre årene. Dette kommer til å skape muligheter også for filippinske sjøfolk, fortalte Seglem.

Selv om resultatene ut fra KPI’ene var svært gode i 2011, er det fortsatt mye som kan bli bedre, minnet Hilmar Lund Andersen fra vettingavdelingen og flåte-sjef John Helland om.Lund Andersen orienterte om vettin-gavdelingens virksomhet, hvor hoved-oppgaven er å bistå folkene om bord i forberedelsen frem mot vettingene.HR-Direktør Arne Fylkesnes gav konfe-ransedeltakerne en oppdatering av den nye HR organisasjonen samt orienterte om selskapets HR “policies”.

Positive response in Manila

The month of March saw Knutsen OAS Shipping organise the first conference for Philippine officers since the subsidiary Knutsen Philip-pines Ltd. was established in Ma-nila. Of all 1400 sailors making up the Knutsen OAS fleet, more than 60 percent are Philippine nationals.

The Philippine officers were praised by the shipping company representatives for having achieved very good results in four essential areas in 2011, these being health, safety, quality and the environ-ment.Besides the entire management and staff of Knutsen’s Philippine staffing company, also Owner and CEO Trygve Seglem, HR Director Arne Fylkesnes, Safety & Security Manager Lars Hanøy, Fleet Manager John Helland and Vetting Manager Hilmar Lund Andersen atten-ded the conference.

Lars Hanøy, in his address to the confe-rence attendees, praised the crew of the company’s ships for the achievements accomplished in the safety sector in 2011.The two programmes ”Active Leaders-

hip” and ”We are Committed to Safety” have both been well received on board,” mr. Hanøy said. He was able to present HSE results considered most positive indeed.“Improvements have been accomplis-hed in terms of personal injuries, and we have succeeded in our zero philo-sophy as far as spills and discharges are concerned. We are also able to note a series of improvements with regard to the KPIs. A good job has been done on board. With a few exceptions, KPI objectives have been reached and even topped on both offshore loading tan-kers, LNG tankers and product tankers.It is the best company result achieved since we first introduced the KPI system in 2003,” a highly pleased Lars Hanøy said.

In Manila, great expectations were bound up with the speech made by Trygve Seglem to the conference atten-dees. Mr. Seglem outlined recent com-pany developments, and made specific mention of the company’s co-operation with the leading shipping company of Japan, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). The formation of the new offshore

company Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT) has strengthened the company’s presence in a flourishing offshore industry.Mr. Seglem informed the attendees of an ambitious construction programme to replace older ships with new ships, fulfilling all new requirements posed by the market and the authorities.”We will construct at least two new ships every year over the next three years. This is going to give rise to great opportunities also for Philippine sail-ors,” mr. Seglem said.

Even though results based on the KPIs were very good in 2011, there is still great potential for improvement,” Hilmar Lund Andersen from the Vetting Department and Fleet Manager John Helland pointed out to the attendees.Mr. Lund Andersen gave a briefing on the activity of the Vetting Department, whose main function is to assist the staff on board in the preparations leading up to the vetting operations.HR Director Arne Fylkesnes gave all conference attendees an update of the new HR organization, as well as a brie-fing on the company’s HR policies.

Mindre konferanse – mer dialog

En av følgene av endringen i rederistrukturen, er at rederikon-feransene endrer form. Ettersom offiserer på bøyelasterne nå har sine konferanser mens kollegene på LNG-tankerne og produktskipene har sine, blir det færre deltakere.

- På de store konferansene er det gjerne slik at vi fra kontoret informerer om det som skjer, og de om bord får informa-sjonen. Erfaringen på rederikonferansen i februar var at vi fikk i stand en veldig god toveis kommunikasjon, sier HR-direktør Arne Fylkesnes til Knut’n. Etter at Nils Kristian Strøm hadde ori-entert om statusen i rederiet, og presen-tert de forretningsutfordringene rederiet står overfor, presenteret Arne Fylkesnes personalavdelingen og Torstein Bjelland innkjøpsavdelingen slik avdelingene nå er organisert.

Simulatorene på senteret gir mulig-heter for å simulere og trene på svært avanserte maritime operasjoner under realistiske forhold. Det er neppe siste gang offiserene fra Knutsen OAS Ship-ping besøker de avanserte simulatorene.

Less conference - more dialogue

One of the consequences of the change in shipping company structure is that the conference for shipping companies is changing form. Since officers on shuttle tank-ers now have their own conferences while colleagues on LNG tankers and product ships have theirs, there are fewer participants.

”At large conferences, it is usually those of us in the office who keep people in-formed of what is happening, and those on board who receive the information. Experience from the shipping company conference in February shows that we established a very good two-way com-munication.” says Arne Fylkesnes, HR Director, to Knut’n.

After Nils Kristian Strøm gave a briefing on the status of the shipping company and presented the business challenges the company faces, Arne Fylkesnes from the personnel department and Torstein Bjelland from the purchase department gave a presentation of how our depart-ments are currently organised.Fleet managers Bjørn H. Hansen (LNG) and John Helland (Product) presented the status of their respective vessel groups.The conference was characterised by constructive dialogue, something that was particularly evident during the last part of the conference. Lars Hanøy, Safety Manager and Geir Hagen, HSSE & QA Manager, received a lot of very good input with respect to ”We are

committed to safety”, and a review of a root cause analysis after an incident on board M/T Liv Knutsen. Also the more practically directed themes such as Vetting (Hilmar Lund Andersen), Doc-map (Dag Johnny Ekreen) and implementation of the new IT systems (Odd Andreas Simonsen) led to commitment. At the end of the conference, partici-pants were invited on a tour of the new Haugesund Simulator Centre, Simsea. The simulators at the centre provide opportunities to simulate and train for very advanced maritime operations under realistic conditions. It will not be the last time that officers from Knut-sen OAS Shipping visit the advanced simulators.

Knutsen OAS og rådhuset

Den mest berømte bygningen i Haugesund er byens rosa rådhus. Rådhuset var en gave til byen fra skipsreder Knut Knutsen O.A.S. (1871 – 1946) i anledning hans 50-års dag i 1921. Bygningen ble tegnet av arkitek-tene Gudolf Blakstad og Hermann Munthe-Kaas, og sto ferdig i 1931.

Det gamle rederiet, som er forløperen

for dagens Knutsen OAS Shipping, ble stiftet av Knut Knutsens far, Ole Andreas Knutsen. Om noen har lurt på hva bokstavene OAS betyr, så er forklaringen enkelt. Knut Knutsen var meget stolt av sin far, og OAS står for Ole Andreas’ Sønn.Rådhuset er kåret til Norges flotteste rådhus, og er regnet som et av de be-tydeligste bygg i norsk arkitekthistorie. Med det ”staselige kraftig markerte

hjørnepartiet prydet med dobbelstilte søyler” er det en eksponent for 1920-tal-lets klassiske strømning innen arkitek-turen.Året etter Knut Knutsens død donerte hans kone, Elisabeth Knutsen penger til opparbeidelse og utsmykning av rådhus-plassen, samt innvendig utsmykning av Rådhuset.Ved sin død i 1946 var Knut Knutsen O.A.S. en av Norges rikeste menn.

The most famous building in Haugesund is the town’s pink town hall. The Town Hall was a gift to the town from the ship-owner, Knut Knutsen O.A.S. (1871 – 1946), on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 1921. The building was designed by the architects Gudolf Blakstand and Hermann Munthe-Kaas, and stood finished in 1931.

The old shipping company, the predecessor of today’s Knutsen OAS Shipping, was established by Knut Knutsen’s father, Ole Andreas Knutsen. Should anyone wonder at the signifi-cance of the letters OAS, the explana-tion is simple. Knut Knutsen was very proud of his father, and OAS stands for Ole Andreas’ Son.

significant buildings in Norwegian ar-chitectural history. With its ”handsome, forcefully marked corner parts, decora-ted with pairs of columns” it is repre-sentative of the classical trends of the 1920s within architecture.The year after Knut Knutsen’s death,

his wife, Elisabeth Knutsen, donated money for work on and the decoration of the town hall square, as well as for the interior decoration of the Town Hall. At his death in 1946, Knut Knutsen O.A.S. was one of Norway’s richest men.

Kurs i vedlikehold programmet

Vedlikeholdsprogrammet som er innført på rederiets skip krever omfattende opplæring av de som har ansvar for vedlikehold om bord.

Derfor er det lagt opp ett intensivt kursprogram for kapteiner, maskinsjefer, overstyrmenn, maskinister og andre som har ansvar for vedlikeholdet om bord.

TM MasterI tillegg til at kurset vil heve kompetansenivået hos folkene om bord, er målet at det planlagte vedlikeholdet om bord blir bedre. Det vil ikke bare ha en økonomisk betydning. Bedre vedlikehold betyr økt sikkerhet og mindre risiko for skader både på mennesker, materiell og miljø.

The maintenance program introduced on Knutsen’s vessels requires extensive training of personnel respon-sible for the maintenance onboard.

Therefore, an intensive training program for masters, chief engineers, first mates, engineers and others involved in maintenance is now being provided.

TM MasterThe course aims at raising the level of competence onboard, in addition to improving planning of maintenance operations. This will not only have a beneficial economic effect. Improved maintenance spells better safety and less risk of sustaining damage to people, material and environment.

Knutsen Technology etablerer seg i nye kontorer

Ettersom veksten i rederiet de siste årene har ført til at det er trangt om plassen i lokalene ved Karmsundet har teknologiavdelingen flyttet ut av rederikontorene og installert seg i Haugesund Sentrum.

Knutsen Technology er den nye enheten som ledes av Per Lothe og som vil om-fatte KVOC, PNG og KBAL. Ved siden av å følge opp suksessen med KVOC, skal selskapet markedsføre, selge og pro-dusere den nyeste suksessen KBAL.- Omfattende testing av vårt egenutvi-klede system for behandling av bal-lastvann er gjennomført om bord i MT Gijon Knutsen, og resultatene er svært gode. Jeg tror dette vil bli en teknologi som kommer til å bli en suksess, sier Per Lothe, som har fått med seg blant annet Ole Hartvik Larsen til å lede KBAL. Da Larsen for en tid tilbake fikk spørsmål om han ville lede det nye teknologiselskapet, var det ikke nei i hans munn.- Selv om det å være flåtesjef for rederi-ets bøyelastere var en spennende utfor-dring, føler jeg at denne muligheten var

noe jeg ikke kunne la gå fra meg, sier Larsen.- Det å få være med på å bygge opp noe nytt, begynne på scratch så å si, det frister. Og kundene våre finnes over hele verden.Ole Hartvik Larsen er ingeniør av utdannelse, og har vært engasjert innen offshorerettet virksom-het fra begynnelsen av 1980-tallet. Med sin bakgrunn fra Kværner Rosenberg, HMV, Aibel og Goltens Dubai er hans nye posisjon innen et område der han har lang erfaring. Dette er viktig når vi nå skal bli leverandør at et produkt.

- Det tidligere Haugesund Sjø bygget er nyrenovert, og vi er på plass i 6. etasje, forteller Lothe. Foruten Ole Hartvik Larsen så er Bernt Olav Bauer-Nilsen også på plass i de nye lokalene. I tillegg vil to nyansatte begynne i Knutsen Tek-nology fra august av.

KBAL har vært igjennom en lang godkjennelsesprosess. Denne prosessen har vært kostbar og krevende, men vi er kommet i mål. Vi er også meget fornøyd med at KNOT har bestilt KBAL til 3

av de nye bøyelasterne som nå bygges i Korea sier Per Lothe. De vil ha en behandlingskapasitet på 3000 m3 vann per time.

Mange tusen skipDe nye IMO-reglene for ballastvann behandling som vil gjelde så snart kon-vensjonen blir ratifisert av det nødven-dige antall stater, skal hindre at dyr og organismer spres til andre farvann enn der de naturlig hører hjemme. KBAL er en patentbeskyttet metode hvor vi gjen-nom en trykk/vakuum prosess dreper organismene som er i ballastvannet. I tillegg blir vannet utsatt for ultrafiolett belysning som tar knekken på ørsmå organismer og bakterier som overlever trykkforandringene, forteller Lothe.

Tilsvarende teknologi- Den teknologien vi bruker i KBAL har likhetstrekk med teknologien som er benyttet i KVOC. KVOC hindrer lavt trykk og dannelse av oljedamp eller VOC når oljelasten tas om bord i skipet. Det motsatte er tilfelle for KBAL. I KBAL fører plutselig fall i trykket,

Etter den vellykkede tes-tingen av KBAL om bord på MT Gijon Knutsen venter vi at sertifiseringen gjen-nom Det Norske Veritas er klar i løpet av kort tid, sier Lothe.Bernt Olav Bauer-Nilsen ble ”tredje-mann om bord” på Knutsen Techno-logy. Since growth in the company in recent years has led to a scarcity of space at the premises near Karm-sundet, the Technology Department has vacated the company premises and set itself up at the centre of Haugesund.

Knutsen Technology is the new unit managed by Per Lothe and which will encompass KVOC, PNG and KBAL. Besides following up the success of KVOC, the company will market, sell and produce the most recent success KBAL.“Extensive testing of our self-developed system for treatment of ballast water has been carried out on board the MT Gijon Knutsen, and results are very good. I believe this is a technology that is going to become a great success;” Per Lothe says, who has been joined by i.a. Ole Hartvik Larsen for the purpose of managing KBAL. As mr. Larsen, a short time ago, was asked if he would like to manage the new technology company, he was quick to accept the offer.”Even though being Fleet Manager of the company’s offshore loading tankers was a highly interesting challenge, I felt this opportunity was one that I could not miss out on,” mr. Larsen says.”To be able to help build something new, begin from scratch, so to speak, is most tempting indeed. And our custo-mers exist on a worldwide basis.”Ole Hartvik Larsen, a graduate engine-er, has been involved in offshore-orien-ted business from the beginning of the 1980s. With his former work experience from Kværner Rosenberg, HMV, Aibel and Goltens Dubai, his new position is within an area in which he possesses long-standing experience. This is highly important now that we are to become supplier of a product.

”The former Haugesund Sjø building has been newly renovated, and we are put up on the 5th floor,” mr. Lothe says. Besides Ole Hartvik Larsen, also Bernt

Olav Bauer-Nilsen has taken occupancy of the new premises. Two new employ-ees will, in addition, take up work with Knutsen Technology from the month of August.

KBAL has now been through a longer process of approval. The process has been costly and demanding, but we have now finished it all off successfully. We are also highly pleased with KNOT’s having commissioned KBAL for 3 of the new offshore loading tankers now being constructed in Korea,” Per Lothe says. These will have a treatment capa-city of 3000 m3 of water per hour.

Many thousands of shipsThe new IMO rules relating to ballast water treatment which will apply as soon as the convention is ratified by the necessary number of states, shall pre-vent animals and organisms from being spread to waters other than their natural habitats. KBAL is a patented method where we, by way of a pressurizing/vacuum process, kill off all organisms present in the ballast water. The water is, moreover, exposed to ultraviolet lighting which kills off tiny organisms and bacteria that survive the pressure changes,” mr. Lothe says.

Similar technology”The technology we use in KBAL has points of resemblance to the technology that has been used in KVOC. While KVOC serves to prevent low pressure

and the formation of oil vapour or VOC when the oil cargo is taken on board the ship, it is the opposite that is the case for KBAL. In KBAL, a sudden drop in the pressure, combined with such a low pressure that the water ”boils” at am-bient temperature, leads to animalcules and organisms bursting up from within.Besides the method being efficient, and KBAL being a cost-effective way of trea-ting the ballast water, the plant requires little maintenance. There are no filters to be cleaned, nor any use of chemi-cals. Following the successful testing of KBAL on board the MT Gijon Knut-sen, we expect certification via Det Nor-ske Veritas to become ready in a short period of time,” mr. Lothe says.

Bernt Olav Bauer-Nilsen ended up the third to join the Knutsen Technology team. A graduate chartered engineer in the field of maritime machinery, he pos-sesses former work experience as gene-ral manager of Brødrene Bauer-Nilsen, as well as experience from the Maritime Directorate and DNV.

”I am very much looking forward to commencing the sale of these interesting products that we now have,” he says to Knut’n. Even though I’ve only been here for a few weeks, I feel well and comfortably settled in. In the company of good colleagues, I am looking for-ward to building up a technical commu-nity here at Knutsen Technology,” mr. Bauer-Nilsen says.

Knutsen sentral i Mexicos LNG-forsyning

For innbyggerne i havnebyen Manzanilo på den mexikanske Stillehavskysten kommer de sorte skorsteinene med de røde ringene til å bli et hyppig syn i årene fremover. I mars kom LNG/C Va-lencia Knutsen med over 170 000 kubikkmeter LNG til det nye mot-taksanlegget for LNG i byen.

Lasten var drivstoffet som startet opp den nye terminalen som blir et sentralt ledd i Mexicos elektrisitetsforsyning. Den høytidlige åpningen av regassifise-ringsterminalen i Manzanillo ble foretatt 27. mars av Mexicos president, Felipe Calderón.

Det er de tre koreanske selskapene KOGAS, Mitsui og Samsung, som har bygget og eier Terminal KMS. Det er den tredje av sitt slag som er bygget i Mexico. Terminalen i Manzanilo vil ha en sentral rolle i energiforsyningen i den vestre delen av Mexico. Gjennom en 300 kilometer lang gassledning brin-ges naturgassen videre inn i landet til Guadalajara, som er Mexico nest største by med rundt 4 millioner innbyggere. Ledningen har en prislapp på 350 mil-lioner US-dollar.Det er ikke første gangen LNG-tankere fra Knutsen OAS Shipping spiller en nøkkelrolle når nasjoner i Sør- og Mellom-Amerika bygger sitt fremtidige energinettverk. For to år siden åpnet

Peru’s president Alan Garcia Perus og Sør-Amerikas første eksportanlegg for naturgass i Melchorita. Den gangen var det LNG/C Barcelona Knutsen som hentet jomfrulasta som gjorde Peru til naturgasseksportør.Også LNG-lasta som Valencia Knutsen leverte i Mexico kom fra den peruianske LNG-terminalen. Det er spanske Repsol som er nøkkelen til Knutsen OAS Shippings sentrale rolle i distribusjonen av naturgass i Sør- og Mellom-Amerika. Knutsen is key to Mexico’s LNG supply

For the inhabitants of the harbour town of Manzanillo on the Mexican Pacific Ocean Coast, black chim-neys with red rings will be a fre-quent sight in the years to come. In March, LNG/C Valencia Knutsen arrived, carrying more than 170,000 cubic metres of LNG to the recep-tion facilities for LNG in the town.

The load was fuel to start up the new terminal that will be a key component in Mexico’s electricity supply. The formal opening of the regasification terminal in Manzanillo was carried out on the 27th March by Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderón.

The three Korean companies, KOGAS, Mitsui and Samsung, built and own Terminal KMS. It is the third of its kind to be built in Mexico. The terminal in Manzanillo will play a key role in energy supply to the western part of Mexico. A 300 kilometre long gas line will bring the gas further into the country to Guadalajara, which with about 4 million inhabitants, is Mexico’s second largest city. The gas line has a price tag of USD 350 million.Repsol has the contact. It is not the first time LNG tankers from Knutsen OAS

Shipping have played a key role when nations in South and Central America build their future energy network. Two years ago, Peru’s president, Alan Garcia, opened Peru’s and South America’s first export facility for natural gas in Melchorita. At the time it was LNG/C Barcelona Knutsen that brought the virgin load that made Peru an exporter of natural gas.The LNG load that Valencia Knutsen

delivered in Mexico also came from the Peruvian LNG terminal. The Spanish company Repsol has been key to Knutsen OAS Shipping’s central role in the distribution of natural gas in South and Central America. Repsol owns 20 per cent of the LNG project in Peru, and has a 15-year contract with the government’s electricity company (Federal Electricity Commission) to deliver 500 million cubic feet per day.

- En leder skal være aktiv og in-volvere seg uten å gå for langt i å detaljstyre. Dessuten skal en leder være et forbilde gjennom sin adferd. Det er dette vi søker å få frem i fil-men.

Det sier kaptein Frode Skare om bord på M/T Karen Knutsen til Knut’n. Sirabuen skal sammen med maskinsjef Arvid Magne Hansen være de sentrale personene i den nye filmen som skal lages som en del av programmet ”We are committed to safety”. De to kjenner hverandre godt, ikke bare fordi de har seilt sammen 2,5 år på Karen, og før det i fire år om bord på M/T Anna Knutsen.

- Vi bor begge på Utsira. I Norges minste kommune kjenner alle hveran-dre, men vi er også omgangsvenner, sier Skare, som ikke regner med å få nye ”stjernestatus” gjennom filmen.- Dette er en opplæringsfilm hvor vi

filmes når vi gjennomfører ordinære oppgaver tatt fra arbeidssituasjoner vi opplever om bord. For meg og Arvid Magne er det viktig å slå hull på myten om at det tar lenger tid å følge sikker-hetsregler og prosedyrer. Vi vil bevise at når man følger alle prosedyrer med Risk assessment, Toolbox talk og tar Timeout når det er nødvendig, tar det ikke lenger tid. Det å jobbe sikkert og følge prosedyrene er det samme som å jobbe effektivt, mener Skare.

De to Sirabuene har hatt besøk av film-teamet på hjemmebane også. Kamera-linsene fanget opp både storm og stille i den lille øykommunen ute i havet.

- Filmen er en viktig del av oppfølgeren til programmet ”Active Leadership”, sier Safety Manager Lars E. Hanøy til Knut’n.I løpet av første halvår har rederiet arbeidet både med del 2 til ”Active Lea-

dership”, og del 3 i ”We are committed to safetyprogrammet”.- Vi hadde møte i referansegruppen i månedsskiftet mai-juni, og følger opp med den siste finpussen på gruppear-beidene til del 3 i ”We are committed to safety”, kalt ”Shortcuts and deviations as well as compliance”. Referansegrup-pa vil også få filmen som skal tas opp om bord i Karen Knutsen til gjennom-gang når den er klar, sier Hanøy. Han roser sjøfolkene for det sikkerhets-arbeidet som gjøres om bord på skipene. - Arbeidsoperasjoner planlegges bedre gjennom bruk av morgenmøter, Risk Assessment og Toolbox Talk. Near Miss rapporteringen har også blitt kraftig forbedret. Dette slår igjen ut positivt gjennom lavere skadetall og lavere syke-fravær, sier Hanøy.Han understreker at alle ledere i KOAS/KNOT bør vise godt lederskap gjennom å være gode rollemodeller, og bidra til en åpen kommunikasjon om bord.

- A leader must be active and com-mitted without going too far in micromanagement. Moreover, a leader should be a model through his/her conduct. This is what we’re trying to show in the film.

It is Master Frode Skare on the M/T Karen Knutsen who says this to Knut’n. Together with Chief Engineer Arvid Magne Hansen he is one of the main characters in the new film being shot as part of the ”We are committed to safety” program. The two know each other well, and it is not only because they have sailed on Karen for 2.5 years, and before that four years onboard the M/T Anna Knutsen.

- We both live at Utsira. In the smallest community in Norway everyone knows each other, but we’re also friends, Skare says, who does not aspire to get ”cele-brity status” because of this film.- This is an educational film where we’re being filmed in carrying out ordi-nary duties taken from work situations onboard. For Arvid Magne and me it’s important to repel the myth that it takes a long time to observe safety rules and procedures. We want to prove that it does not take any longer than normal to comply with procedures in Risk assessment, Toolbox talks, and taking a Timeout when necessary. Working safely and following procedures is tan-tamount to working efficiently, Skare holds.The film team also paid a visit to the two islanders in their homes on Utsira. The camera lenses captured both gales and calm weather on the tiny island far out at sea.

- The film is an important part of the sequel to the Active Leadership pro-gram, Safety Manager Lars E. Hanøy points out to Knut’n.During the first six months of this year the company has been working on part 2 to ”Active Leadership”, and part 3 to ”We are committed to the safety program”.- The reference group had a meeting in May-June, and is now adding the final touches to the teamwork relating to part 3 in ”We are committed to safety”, called ”Shortcuts and deviations as well as compliance”. The reference group will also get to review the film being shot on the Karen Knutsen as soon as it is ready, Hanøy says. He praises the seamen onboard the ships for their safety efforts. - Work operations are better planned through the use of morning meetings,

M/T Elisabeth Knutsen har vært på et fire dagers besøk i Haugesund.- Så vidt jeg kjenner til har ikke Elisabeth Knutsen vært på besøk i hjembyen før.

Grunnen til besøket var at vi hadde en lekkasje på en hylsegjennomføring. For å tette lekkasjen måtte vi i dokk, fortel-ler kaptein Gunnar Talgø til Knut’n.

Med sine 124.000 Dwt er det ikke så mange steder å velge mellom, men dok-ken på Aibel i Haugesund passet bra.I Haugesund viste den store bøy-elasteren godt igjen i havnebildet, og Elisabeth Knutsen vakte betydelig oppmerksomhet de fire dagene den var i Haugesund.- Vi kom til Haugesund fra Hamburg i ballast, og etter dagene i dokk gikk vi

rett til Gullfaks for å laste olje. Denne er vi nå i gang med å losse, og etter det er det tilbake til Gullfaks for nok en oljelast for Statoil, forteller kaptein Talgø på telefon fra Milford Haven i Sør-England. Elisabeth Knutsen har et mannskap på 26.

M/T Elisabeth Knutsen has been on a four-day visit to Haugesund.- As far as I’m aware Elisabeth Knutsen has never been in her hometown before.

The background to her visit was that we had a leak in a propeller shaft seal. To close the leak we had to go into dock, Master Gunnar Talgø tells Knut’n.With her 124.000 Dwt, Elisabeth Knutsen has not many places to choose between, but the dock at Aibel, Hauge-sund suited her well.The impressive shuttle tanker loo-med large in the port of Haugesund. Elisabeth Knutsen created considera-ble attention the four days she was in Haugesund.

- We arrived in Haugesund from Ham-burg carrying ballast, and after the days in dock we went straight to Gullfaks to load oil. We’re now in the process of unloading, and afterwards we go back to Gullfaks to pick up yet another oil cargo, Master Talgø reports on the telephone from Milford Haven, South England. Elisabeth Knutsen has a crew of 26.
