When the students re-turned to school in Janu-ary, I met with them and restated my expecta-tions of them. I also asked each student to submit three goals - two of their goals needed to
be academic goals and one could be a personal goal. Students were also asked to write down what they wanted to be when they grow up. Oh my - they did a great job! In fact, these papers were probably the best I’ve ever received. Below are what "our” kids shared:
help others
do my homework on time
be respectful to my parents
go to college
study notes every night
eat healthy
bring up my grades
help my parents around the house without being asked
make more friends
create an organization to help chil-dren
They have expressed interest in careers such as Chefs, Doctors, Teachers, Engi-neers, Scientists, Firefighters, Policemen, Professional Athletes, etc. Many of our students wrote that they wanted to help others. They especially want to help chil-dren, the ill and animals. Our kids have hearts of gold! I am so impressed with this group of stu-dents. They are wonderful, and I love them very much. Please let me know if you need anything.
NURRE’S NEWS
KNOX’S NOTES
It is hard to believe we are
in our 3rd Nine Weeks.
Before you know it, this
school year will be over.
We are working hard to
ensure that your child is
successful in 6th Grade, confident going
into STAAR Testing, and prepared for
7th Grade. Parents please help us with
some spring cleaning and keeping our
students focused on working hard as
the school year gets closer to the end.
Students need to be in school every
day. They should come to school pre-
pared with their supplies. Please ask your
child to show you his/her homework to
ensure it is being completed. Help your
child keep his/her backpack clean and
organized. Working together is the key to
student success.

Mrs. Dillard reports that there are
still many students who are in need
of additional immunizations before
entering 7th grade. Parents are
strongly encouraged to get these
shots while in 6th grade so that rec-
ords can be posted in the computer
before the end of the school year.
Our school nurses do not work in the summer.
Students who do not have their immunizations current
on the first day of 7th grade will not be able to attend
classes. This is mandated by the State of Texas. If you
are not sure if you need vaccines or if you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to call or email our
school nurse, Kathy Dillard ([email protected]).
PINK TICKETS
On Monday, February 2nd, we began our annual “Pink
Ticket” program at Wertheimer. We have done this the
past several years, and it is a lot of fun!
Teachers and staff can distribute pink tickets to students
for such things as random acts of kindness, reaching a
goal or a milestone, or taking care of business. You just
never know when, where or what pink tickets will be
distributed for.
Students will write their name on the tickets they receive
and place them in the ticket barrel which will be located
in the cafeteria each day. Drawings will be held weekly
and the winners’ names will be announced to come to
the office and claim their prize.

our area. The contest was held at Angleton Junior High on
Saturday, January 31st. Wertheimer’s teams combined to
receive 1st place. In fact, their score was 82 points higher
than the second place school. We are very proud of our

Academic competition has come to town! Many students
at Wertheimer Middle School have worked very hard to
ready themselves for the upcoming Universal Scholastic
League (UIL) meet and are nearly ready to show off their
skills. UIL team members are given an opportunity to
demonstrate all that they have learned through a variety of
categorical competitions that include: number sense, dic-
tionary, calculator applications, music memory, social
studies, chess and more. These students have put in a lot
of time and effort into this challenge and will prove fierce
competitors. Wertheimer Hawks are confident and pre-
pared to win!
According to their website, (http://www.uiltexas.org/), the
Universal Interscholastic League was created by the Uni-
versity of Texas at Austin in 1910. They created UIL to
help students learn what it takes to win, how to lose grace-
fully, and become self-motivated while instilling intellec-
tual curiosity. This organization also promotes good
sportsmanship and cooperation between schools. UIL
helps encourage students and prepare them for a more
useful and favorable life.
I had the opportunity to speak to two of Wertheimer’s
amazing UIL coaches and ask them some questions about
the upcoming competition. Mrs. Sarah McBride,
Wertheimer social studies teacher, coaches Dictionary.
Mrs. Michele Broom, Wertheimer math teacher and cam-
pus UIL coordinator, coaches Chess Puzzle, Mathematics,
Number Sense and Calculator Apps.
When I asked what their favorite things are about serving
as UIL coaches, Mrs. Broom divulged that she feels that
“it is very rewarding to work with kids that are so excited
about learning ways to win their competition.” Mrs.
McBride told me that she agrees 100%. Mrs. Broom also
revealed how she loves to see the students’ faces when
they realize how much more they’ve learned, adding that
it is often more than they thought they would get from the
competition. She also said that over the years she has ob-
served that most of the kids want to carry their interests
(initiated during UIL) with them to high school and on to
college. Mrs. McBride shared that one of her favorite
parts is the tension in the air on competition day as well
the fun she has while working with her UIL students.
Because Mrs. Broom has a lot of experience with the UIL
process as the campus UIL coordinator, I was curious to
find out how she felt about the competition procedures.
Mrs. Broom mentioned that she would like to have
‘mini contests’ before the actual UIL competition to
help prepare the students for the finals events. Addi-
tionally, she finds that many students are increasingly
competitive and enjoy the friendly challenges. It seems
that win or lose, students are in good hands. Both
teachers have had students and groups that have fin-
ished strongly in past competitions.
Two of Wertheimer’s UIL students proudly expressed
their opinions when asked some questions as well.
Ryan Miller and Reagan Gray both admitted to having
competitive spirits and reported to me that participating
this year in UIL have been very enjoyable. Ryan is par-
ticipating in Calculator Applications while Reagan is
competing in Dictionary. According to Ryan, in Calcu-
lator Applications, you use a high-tech calculator to
compute 80 math questions (well above your grade
level) in a mere 30 minutes. Reagan affirmed that in
Dictionary, competitors must look up multiple words,
phrases, abbreviations and more within a 20 minute
timeframe.
It seems that UIL provides many enjoyable opportuni-
ties for student competitors and coaches alike, and we
are all looking forward to hearing about the success of
our Wertheimer teams. As a participant myself, I can
confidently say that UIL competition rocks!

Happy Valentine's Day! February is a short month, but one that is important because we are reminded of all
those special people in our lives. Please remember to tell your loved ones how much they are appreciated. This is especially im-portant for our children. Children need to feel loved, encouraged and supported. Remember to “be in the moment”. Many times, we allow for our attention to be else where such as on our cell phones. Technology is great, but it is affect-ing the quality of communication. Let’s be role models for our chil-dren.

WAYS TO SHOW LOVE TO YOUR CHILD
1.Use plenty of positive words with your child.
2.Respond promptly and lovingly to your child's physical and emotional needs.
3.When your child is angry, argumentative or in a bad mood, give him a hug, cuddle, pat, secret sign or other gesture of affection he favors and then talk with him about it when he’s feeling better.
4.Use non-violent forms of discipline.
5.Make plans to spend time alone with your young child or teen doing something he or she enjoys.
6.Help your child foster positive relationships with friends, siblings and members of the com-munity.
7.One of your most important gifts as a parent is to help your child develop self-esteem. Your child needs your steady support and encouragement to discover his strengths. He needs you to be-lieve in him as he learns to believe in himself. Loving him, spending time with him, listening to him and praising his accomplishments are all part of this process.
