We’ve got modern facilities and fantastically friendly staff, who go out of their way to help you settle in, make new friends and achieve your full potential.

Knowsley Community College is easily accessible from anywhere on Merseyside: the Roby Centre is less than 10 minutes by bus from Old Swan and the Kirkby Centre is less than 20 minutes by train from Liverpool City Centre. The College puts on extra bus routes and provides ample free parking.

Our Roby Centre boasts modern hair and beauty salons

and a silver service restaurant, Expressions, all of which

are open to the public and give our students real industry

experience. Community Radio Station KCC Live 99.8FM

is also based at the Roby Centre and many studentschoose to volunteer at the station in their spare time.

The Kirkby Centre is home to the majority of our vocational and apprenticeship courses and includes the College’s £5 million Management and Industrial Innovation Centre. This Centre also features the College’s Engineering Machine Shop, Construction Site, Carpentry Workshop, Motor Vehicle Garage andBusiness Centre. From September 2012 Hair andBeauty courses will also be available at our Kirkby Centre.

Can I afford to go to College?

Our exclusive COLLEGE PAYS package will give 16-18 year olds up to £800 a year (that’s £1,600 if your course is 2 years)!Adults (19+) can access up to £1,800 per year!*

ApprenticeshipsApprenticeships offer you the chance to earn while you learn, giving you real employment experience at the same time as gaining the qualifications you need to succeed.

Apprentices can start at any time during the year. Apprenticeships offered by the College include a Level 2 Apprenticeship (equivalent to five GCSE passes), a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship (equivalent to two A Level passes) and a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship (equivalent to a Degree Level qualification).

Vocational and Professional QualificationsA wide range of Awards, Certificates and Diplomas are available from Level 1 right up to Level 4, so whatever your previous qualifications we will have the course for you. Courses are designed and tailored to prepare you for employment in a specific career or industry.

A LevelsWe offer A Levels in a wide range ofsubjects. A Levels are taught at ourpurpose-built Roby Sixth Form Centre fully-equipped with IT resources, 180 seat performing artstheatre, art and design studios andmuch more.

BTEC Level 3 Extended DiplomasThese qualifications are recognisedby employers and universities asbeing of equal value to A Levels.

These are more practical than classroom-based learning and focuson a specific career-related area.

Courses areas include: Art and Design, Business, Computing, Engineering, Media, PerformingArts, Music, Public Services andSport.

We also offer Foundation Art and Design (Pre Degree Level 3-4).

To become an Advanced Level student at Knowsley Community College, you must have achieved*:• 5 or more GCSEs, Grade C or above (including English and two other main National Curriculum subjects).• Or 4 or more GCSEs, Grade C or better (English must be one of these GCSEs), with a BTEC First Diploma.• Or other intermediate qualifications (including English, plus one National Curriculum subject).

A combination of GCSEs and BTECFirst Diplomas is acceptable forsome subjects

*Some subject areas may have morespecific requirements which will beclearly communicated on application.

Trips and VisitsTo supplement your studies, Sections also run a numberof curriculum enrichment activities. These might includesubject-specific master classes and conferences in venues across the country and sometimes further afield.

There will be a number of social activities and eventsthat you can participate in. Throughout the year we organise personal development and team building activities, charity events and much more.

EnrichmentAt Knowsley Community College there is a range of extra-curricular activities you can get involved in; theseinclude Volunteering, Driving Theory Practice, Sign Language, First Aid, Mountain Biking and weekly sportsactivities.

One of our most popular enrichment activities is volunteering with KCC Live 99.8FM. The station is basedat the Roby Centre and offers students and outside volunteers the chance to learn radio and media skills.There is a real buzz down in the station and it is greatplace to make new friends and socialise whilst developing skills for your future.

The Student CouncilKnowsley Community College’s Student Council is madeup of Student Representatives from all areas of the College and works to give all students at the College avoice on matters that affect them.

Becoming a Student Representative is another great opportunity to enhance your CV and develop your communication and organisational skills. It is an interesting and fun experience where you will get to haveyour say on important issues relating to all areas of College life and give College management a student’sperspective. As a Student Rep, you will learn how to advocate and represent the views of others and will takepart in a range of activities including regular meetingswith students, staff and managers at the College.

A GUIDE TO ADULT COURSES:Full-time and Part-time Vocational CoursesThe College offers hundreds of vocational courses at alllevels. From Hair and Beauty and Engineering, to Accounting and Computing, we are sure that we will havethe right course for you.

Courses are available from Level 1 up to Level 4, to further your skills in a specific career or industry.

Access to Higher EducationThe Access to Higher Education course offers anyonewithout the traditional A Level requirements the chanceto apply for a university degree course. An exciting oneyear full-time course could be your passport to a place atuniversity. Many people in recent years have chosen theCollege for this course and enjoyed great success. Placesare limited but you can be considered with just five goodGCSEs or equivalent.

ApprenticeshipsWhatever your age, apprenticeships are the modern wayto earn whilst you learn. As an apprentice you will receive workplace training which is flexible to meet theneeds of you and your employer.

The College offers an exciting range of apprenticeships in over twenty career areas and this is expanding all thetime. Apprenticeships range from Level 2 up to Level 4and 5 in some areas, so whatever your situation an apprenticeship can be a great way to study. See page 10for more details.

Free English and Maths CoursesThese courses are suitable for adults of all ages andbackgrounds who wish to improve their skills in Englishand Maths. Whether you want to help your children withtheir homework or gain qualifications to improve youremployment prospects we can help you get the skills youneed.

English and Maths courses also allow you to gain nationally recognised City & Guilds or GCSE qualifications. These courses are rightly very popular andevery year hundreds of people enjoy short part-timecourses with friendly and supportive tutors at venues allover Knowsley. The work is also personalised to suit yourneeds and at the start of the course we will identify whatyou may want to work upon and what you’re already goodat doing. All these courses are also fully-funded meaningthose taking part will pay nothing at all.

Higher EducationSave on University fees by studying for a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma at Knowsley Community College. We offer university-standard teaching right on your doorstep and at a much lowercost.

Currently our Higher Education offer consists of Leisureand Tourism Management (full-time), Information Technology (full-time), HND in Creative Media Production and HND in Performing Arts.

WorkWorld Success: Patrick Towey'Go for Customer Service' at WetherspoonsPatrick attended the College over two weeks and was trained in customer service, food safety and first aid. Patrick sailed throughthe training and on completion was offered employment at PrescotWetherspoons. Patrick has now been at Wetherspoons for six monthsand is enjoying every minute; he has even been put forward to undergo training to become a team leader!

Patrick said: “Going back to College and getting new qualificationswas a great experience and the staff at Knowsley Community Collegewere very supportive and encouraging. I would advise anyone who isunemployed to think about getting new qualifications as going backto education isn’t as daunting as you may think.”

Jennifer Young is a Painting and Decorating apprentice employed by Seddon Property Services. She attends Knowsley Community College one day a week as part of her apprenticeship training.Jennifer is excelling on her apprenticeship and recently won the prestigious Painting andDecorating Association Premier Apprentice/Trainee Awards 2012. Her aspirations for the futureare to run her own Painting & Decorating company. Jennifer enjoys her time in College and getson well with her teachers. She said “I am never afraid to ask about learning new skills in the workplace or at College.”

Apprenticeships can be fully delivered in the workplace although some specialised areas require day release to College.
