Smart carFormally known as SMART GMbH,an automotive brand of Daimler AGIts headquarters' are based in GermanyIts brand logo denoting a letter “c” for “compact” and an arrow for “forward thinking”It was inspired by SWATCH WATCH, and the car was nicknamed as SWATCHMOBILE.The name SMART is an acronym For SWATCH MERCEDES ART.After GM and Volkswagen rejection Swatch teamed up with Daimler-Benz and opened a joint- venture.

Competitors-THE TAYOTA IQ
The name iQ, an intialiasm of the term intelligence quotient, recalls a competitor, the Smart Fortwo. According to Toyota, the i stands for "individuality" "innovation" and "intelligence", while the Q stands for "quality" It was Japanese car of the year for 2008.
Volkswagen chico According to Britain's
Autocar magazine, it's tipped to be called Chico by VW insiders, and will be based on the company's upcoming NSF ("New Small Family") line of subcompacts .
Chico will arrive in the U.K., City-friendly microcars are big in Europe and catching on in America. That's why Volkswagen is readying a thrifty, low-cost two-seater a smart Fortwo and tyota chico. Chico is the likely name, and it could be U.S.-bound.

But now smart car are being shipped and sold around the world More than 770,000 units and 36 countries later, the second-generation
Fortwo debuted in 2006. With only a slight size increase, the general look of the iconic city car
remained, but the interior and often-criticized automanual transmission received significant changes and safety was improved.
The biggest news, however, was that Smart would be expanding into the United States, where rising gas prices had shifted the market toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.
While there is no mainstream vehicle that embodies those two criteria better than the Fortwo, only time will tell if Americans who once laughed at Smart will embrace it the way Europeans and others around the world have.
The criticisms faced by smart car:
Safety: Despite development of a crash management system there were report of several accidents. In response the company developed a “TRUST PLUS”, a software package that will cut power if the wheel start to slip.
In American tests using a five star rating, Smart cars received a four star safety rating for the driver from a front impact, and a five star safety rating for the driver for a side impact
The main structure of the car is a stiff structure called a Tridion Safety Cell, which is designed to activate the crumple zones of a colliding vehicle. This design creates a very strong safety cell around the passengers.[
Price: It originally sold for $10,500. But after disappointing sales the prices were reduced to $9,300. The price of the car was high as compared to other smart car.

Critics said the car, with a base price of about $8,800 and top speed of 135 kilometers per hour, was too slow and too small for the money. Smart's marketers countered by cutting the price by $270 and boosting the advertising budget
SMART ED was released in UK as a leased vehicle on limited basis.Mercedes representative stated that car would be for sale in UK in 2010.
Older SMART car equipped with smaller engine sizes(less than 660 cubic cm) fit into KEI car category in Japan which are eligible for range of lower taxes. Thus a car called SMART K was sold in JAPAN only.
CONCLUSION
•CHINASmart was shown in April 2008 at the Beijing Auto Show 2008. Smart Fortwo started the pre-sales in October 2008 and the Smart vending machine road show in 12 cities from October 2008 to February 2009.
•Hong KongSmart is already available in Hong Kong with one authorized dealer.
CanadaThe Smart Fortwo was introduced in Canada in late 2004. May 2007, marked the car's strongest sales performance ever in Canada, at well over 500 units. Sales are strongest (per capita) in Western Canada, with Vancouver Island and Vancouver being especially hot markets for Smart.Currently, in North America, Smarts are sold with the larger gas engine in the US and Canada, with the smaller, more fuel efficient diesel being sold in Mexico, Europe and other World markets.
United States In June 2006, DaimlerChrysler confirmed that Smart would
be officially launched in the United States in the first quarter of 2008. The cars are offered through a dealership holding company name Smart USA.
On January 25, 2010 smart USA began its first lease program in the US market for smart fortwo models. The program is scheduled to last through February 28, 2010.
