  • 2. Introduction:

According to Plato, knowledge is Justified true belief1. Gaining knowledge involves a systematic process of ordering information, identifying key assumptions, formulating premises, connecting using the principles of logic2, enabling us to justify and conclude. From time immemorial, a societys ability to interact and build on its knowledge base determined how wealthy its people were3. There is one man who is considered by some4 to be more influential than Albert Einstein5; he is none other than Sir Isaac Newton6. In his last days, circa 1727, he remarked I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me. One may say that truth is elusive and can only be gained through a systematic and ceaseless attempt to enhance ones clarity, width, depth and breadth of vision, using principles of

1 From Platos Theaetetus (dialogue), in this dialogue, Socrates and Theaetetus discuss three definitions of knowledge:

knowledge as perception, knowledge as true judgment, and, finally, knowledge as a true judgment with an account. A logical approach of Justified true belief would be as follows, a statement is true, believed to be true, and this belief is justified. When the basis of justification has a sound rational or logical basis the knowledge is probably true unless it may be proved otherwise. 2 All of known modern science is based on three classical laws of logic also referred to as Laws of thought i) Law of identity What ever is, is, ii) Law of non contradiction Nothing can both be and not be, & iii) the Law of the excluded middle Everything must either be or not be, along with principles of commutation, association, distribution, negation and equivalence. Refer: An Introduction to Logic, Copi & Cohen, Sec 8.7, Pages 372-373. Note: Certain classes of phenomenology strain the assumptions behind these laws but work in these areas remains classified. 3 The high point of any civilization may be correlated to the growth of universities or major centres of learning, consider the Library of Alexandria, Takshashila, and Nalanda. While all of our ancient universities faced complete destruction, there are approximately 40 universities in the countries of Western Europe and the UK that have had more than 500 years of continuous operation. Some like the Universities of Bologna (Italy) (1088 CE), Oxford (1096 CE), University of Montpellier (1131 CE), University of Salamanca (1134 CE), University of Modena (1175 CE) and Cambridge (1209 CE), have now come close to a millennium of continuous operations. These universities and those in Germany, France, Swiss Polytechnic, and the American Universities have given us modern comforts, systems of adjudication and governance that we enjoy today. Needless to say, these countries remain at the very centre of geopolitical events and will remain so for the foreseeable future. 4 According a 2005 poll in the Royal Society; an earlier poll of 100 leading physicists in 1999 placed Einstein as the greatest physicist in all time. One must consider Sir Isaac Newtons accomplishments in a number of other fields and the limitations of his era to gain a broader perspective. 5 Albert Einstein - 14 March 1879 18 April 1955) was a theoretical physicist, philosopher and author who is widely regarded

as one of the most influential and best known scientists and intellectuals of all time. He is known for General relativity, Special relativity, The Photoelectric effect, Brownian motion, Mass-energy equivalence, Einstein field equations, Unified Field Theory, and BoseEinstein statistics. He is most famous for his mass-energy equivalence equation. He impacted the notion of time and simultaneity of events. He is the recipient of the Copley medal from the Royal Society, Nobel Prize in Physics, and the Max Planck Medal. His great intelligence and originality has made his name "Einstein" synonymous with the word genius. 6Sir Isaac Newton FRS , Lucasian Professor of Mathematics (4 January 1643 31 March 1727); renowned English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian; known for Newtonian mechanics, Universal gravitation, Infinitesimal calculus, Optics, Binomial series, Newton's method and his epic Philosophi Naturalis Principia Mathematica.

  • logic and a continuous examination of premises. This Knowledge Utsav initiative a celebration of Knowledge, presents all participants an opportunity now and in the years to come. The Knowledge Utsav conference is a path breaking and pioneering effort, where 44 national level conferences with over 400 research papers and more than 100 inspirational talks being organised on a single day. This massive platform is being created for researchers from diverse fields to exchange ideas and concepts, thereby giving Indian Research and Development a renewed thrust. The conference is organized by EDU.IN7 in association with Tumkur University 8and Jain Research Foundation (JGI)9.

    3. Knowledge Utsav

Why Knowledge Utsav? The Knowledge Commission in its introductory report tabled to the Government of India states Knowledge has been recognised as the key driving force in the 21st century and Indias ability to emerge as a globally competitive player will substantially depend on its knowledge resources. To foster generational change, a systemic transformation is required that seeks to address the concerns of the entire knowledge spectrum. This massive endeavour involves creating a roadmap for reform of the knowledge sector that focuses on enhancing access to knowledge, fundamentally improving education systems and their delivery, re-shaping the research, development and innovation structures, and harnessing knowledge applications for generating better services. Such a knowledge revolution that seeks to build capacity and generate quality will enable our country to empower its human capital including the 550 million below the age of 25. Our unique demographic dividend offers a tremendous opportunity as well as a daunting challenge which requires creative strategies for a new knowledge oriented paradigm. The Knowledge Utsav has been created to pro actively catalyse such challenges. Knowledge Utsav provides a platform for the countrys brightest minds to come together to ideate, inspire and interact with other likeminded education professionals. We hope that this small step will contribute towards realising the vision as set forth by the Knowledge Commission in nation building.

7 EDU.IN is a not for profit entity that aims to steer the future of Education in India. EDU.IN works in collaboration with the Government, Schools & Colleges, and India Inc. to prepare the human talent of India. It also aims to establish best educational practices by contributing to educational governance in the country. 8 Tumkur University [State Govt University] was started during the year 2004 as a separate entity to cater the needs of thousands of young aspirants of higher education in Tumkur. In order to cope with the present global environment, the university is making a successful attempt to bring about an integrated and interdisciplinary approach in the dissemination of knowledge with the aim of achieving overall human personality development. • What is the Knowledge Utsav Conference? The Knowledge Utsav conference is unique by any standard of measure. From nano technology to archaeology, computer networks and robotics to social sciences, biotechnology to energy conservation -papers in diverse areas are being presented, giving participants a unique opportunity to interact with experts from different fields and meet potential investors. Such an attempt has not been made before. Most interdisciplinary10, multi disciplinary11 and transdisciplinary12 conferences have a limitation a theme or subject area13. Diversity is one of the key themes at the Knowledge Utsav. According to Dr. R. Chenraj14 Jain, founder of JGI, Chief Mentor EDU.IN, If innovations are not backed by capital investments, they will not translate into technology, products and wealth creation for the country. One of the main agendas of Knowledge Utsav is to bring together inventors and investors and negate the asymmetry which is one of the key reasons why researchers are not going out from the laboratory to add value to products. Another important driving factor behind this effort is the time saved by organising a conference of this scale. Typically all of these papers would have been presented over a period of 5 years or so. Now however, all 44 conferences are being held on a single day. This results in savings on logistics and costs while capitalising on the presence of researchers from diverse fields. Currently Knowledge Utsav has received papers from over 163 Premier Educational Institutes, Research Organizations and the Industry. These are from 9 major states namely Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala including Karnataka. Dr. Jain while expressing satisfaction at the response remarked - We are extremely thrilled to know that Knowledge Utsav has received such a positive response. Huge participation from across encourages our endeavor to make Knowledge Utsav reach out to a lot more people and give R&D the required back up. Knowledge Utsav aspires to be a stable pedestal for R&D to usher in India and also create awareness amongst individuals who intend to take R&D as a serious career option and not an alternate one.

10 An interdisciplinary field is a field of study that crosses traditional boundaries between academic disciplines to cater to new needs for example nano technology or bioinformatics. 11 Within a multidisciplinary relationship this cooperation "may be mutual and cumulative but not interactive" (Augsburg 2005: 56) while interdisciplinary approach blends the practices and assumptions of each discipline involved. 12 Related to both the above, people from different disciplines work together disrupting traditional boundaries while respecting strengths, assumptions of each discipline 13 An application to the Limca book of records was rejected because there was no category under which this conference falls. Consequently a fresh category is being created. This process is underway. 14 Founder JGI institutions, Chancellor Jain University, started life at the age of 13, became the No1 retailer for reliance. He has to his credit numerous awards, some of which are: Rotary Award for Vocational Service, Dr. B C Roy Award from Indian Medical Association Award for Leading Personalities, SEVAK Award for Service to Humanity, Rajasthan Youth Association Award for Service in Education Sector, Jaycees Award - Outstanding Young Indian, Seva Ratna Award awarded by Centurion Trust, Chennai, Honorary Doctorate in Education Administration & Management from Golden State University, USA .

  • According to Ms. Sudha Raju15, Chairperson EDU.IN, We are very pleased to receive such an overwhelming response in such a short time from across India. Receiving more than 35016 paper presentations within a week clearly shows the impact knowledge Utsav has created. We will continue our support to researchers by taking this platform to a much higher level in the coming years and a start like this has given knowledge Utsav the much needed momentum. Furthermore, A platform like Knowledge Utsav truly demonstrates how participation from individual researchers, companies, and universities will enhance R&D performance and bridge the gap that separates the industry and investors from them. This conference is not just about a volume of papers being presented. Strict standards are being maintained. According to Dr. Sandeep Shastri17 Pro Vice Chancellor, Jain University, the purpose of the conference is to have a ..Bouquet of conferences under one roof enabling cross fertilization across disciplines while maintaining the very highest standards. Clearly the focus will be on multitasking as a competence. Dr. Shastri further noted that people at the cutting edge of research have to have expertise across disciplines. Using an example to illustrate he noted that an expert economist might want to collaborate with a neuro-surgeon or psychologist. Further in order to maintain quality and standards in presentation for each of the 44 disciplines there is an expert panel who closely scrutinizes the abstracts received. Elucidating the criteria Dr. Shastri said the panel looks existing literature to check the originality of the abstract, analyses the contribution of the researcher and checks for absolute proof of genuine research done by the researcher. What is also very unique is the feed back is given to researchers about how they can strengthen their approach. We want to catch our researchers on the right says Dr. Shastri emphasizing on the positive approach taken by the panelists. Concurs Dr. N Sundararajan18 Vice Chancellor and Vice Chairman, Jain University. Every one of the 44 disciplines has at least 3 member panels scrutinizing the abstracts. They are from Jain University, Tumkur University and include industry experts as well. All the abstracts have been very thoroughly scrutinized, the progress has been going well.

  • Summing up, according to Dr. S. C Sharma19 Vice-Chancellor Tumkur University, The Indian higher education system is on the verge of change, thanks to some of the new reforms introduced by the government to chalk out the roadmap for the 21st century. But still lots need to be done to successfully address local and global challenges and nurture future science leaders & scientists, moreover, Our System needs to adopt Collaborative education, which is growing in importance across the globe, with an increased focus on innovation through R&D in order to advance towards a more 'knowledge-based' economy. Understanding these lacunae, EDU.IN has initiated several programmes in the field of education, research and training that would impact favorably the education system in the country in the near future. In conclusion, Dr. Sharma said This conference is the first of its kind and the whole credit goes to Dr. Chenraj Jain for organizing it and I am sure professionals, academicians, researchers and industry will greatly benefit.

    4. Knowledge Utsav The story

It all began on a warm sultry afternoon, in early June. The days were long and the sun blazed forth with all its might. Most people wondered out aloud about the strength of the sun. The occasional shower brought relief, only to be quickly replaced by the scorching sun. It was on one such afternoon, more specifically the 3rd of June, Dr. R Chenraj Jain, sat in his office, engaged in an animated discussion with Yeshasvini Ramaswamy20, Anchor of the School for Leadership Excellence. Dr. Jains office reflected his business like attitude and his desire to focus only on the essentials. Through the glass doors, one could make out Dr. Jain was trying to describe something important, his rapid gestures and questioning eyes revealed he was searching for a breakthrough in concept and execution. With his characteristic simplicity and humility, Dr Jain in his simple formal attire, might pass of as an ordinary office goer or teacher. It is only when one meets him does one realise that

  • he is no ordinary individual21. His sparkling eyes and electrifying speed of conversation which rarely looses focus, is strongly matched with his ability to link diverse topics and thought bringing fresh insights continuously; that quite simply takes ones breath away. No wonder he heads JGI, which was built over a short span of a decade, consisting of a cluster of 59 educational establishments, spread across 20 campuses, home to over 26,000 students from across the globe and over 2000 staff members. The conversation had thus far revolved around organising large conferences. So this will take about a month. possibly 50 days after all there are 44 conferences quipped, Yeshasvini, and then added ..if we really wish to do justice, itll take a year... Dr. Jain suddenly stopped, and just said always remember the 4 Ns \naveeneekaraN \, \navaachaar \, \navaparivartan and \naveenataa \! You follow he asked? and added that it was being innovative and thinking out of the box that will give a solution as what we wanted to do was not hold just a seminar but promote original research platforms in India. Then the thought came.... why dont we do it in one day? One day! One must be crazy Yeshasvini responded... to which Dr. Jain said remember the 4 Ns and lets innovate... Yes.. of course in a single day said Yeshasvini with excitement. On that day history was made Dr. Jain proceeded to explain his vision for the entire event.

    5. Naveenakaran and Knowledge Utsav

Naveenakaran is a Hindi word that refers to an innovation particularly in the area of

research. To give an example and elucidate this further, in many villages in India, there is a need for local transport of produce. However the means available to farmers is very limited. By skilfully using diesel engines used to drive pump sets, vehicles are fabricated for local transport needs. The main challenges of drive train, suspension are tackled using locally available tools and materials.

In Tamil Nadu, fisher men rig push carts with old Enfield or Yezdi engines to serve their transport needs! Recently Tata Motors has come up with Ace a twin cylinder commercial vehicle capable of carrying almost a ton of goods. Needless to say, by addressing what was the real need, Tata Motors have had tremendous success. 22

    22

Tata Motors launched the Ace truck in May 2005 for just above Rs 2 lakhs. The new vehicle was a big hit selling 100,000 in just 20 months. As of May 2010 Ace sold 500,000 in just 5 Years which created history in commercial vehicles

  • 8. The Review Mechanism

The review mechanism uses 3 critieria for reviewing abstracts. Each of the 44 disciplines has

at least 3 reviewers, from Jain University, Tumkur University and an outside expert to

    ensure neutrality.

The reviewers are sent the abstracts and send the same with their comments to the

    selected participants.

The criteria for review are strict.

Proof of originality Existing literature review : If existing literature in the field has

similar claims or objectives being made, the abstract fails in this test

Proof fresh contribution The exclusive contribution made by the researcher needs

    to be identified

Proof of research The evidence research undertaken by the researcher needs to

    be clear and unambiguous.

If an abstract passes all the three tests then it is accepted. If through some changes in

approach, or methodology help the researcher in pass the scrutiny then this is encouraged,

else the abstract and manuscript is rejected outright.
