d. Dear Saint Catherine of Sweden Family,
Often when one asks a little child, “How much do you love me?” the child, stretching his or her arms as
far as possible, will answer back, “This much!” In today’s short Gospel reading, Jesus uses the word love five
times. We use the word “LOVE” so easily now days that it often does not mean too much.
I am BLESSED to have a family that is not afraid to tell each other that we are loved! Whether I’m saying
goodbye on the telephone or in person, my Mom will always say “I love you” to which I answer, “I love you too”
and then my Dad will always answer “I love you three and four!” Sometimes one of us will add “I love you
more!” or we use the line “I love you to the moon and back!” It is good to know that we are LOVED.
This weekend and next many of our young people will make their First Holy Communion. We as their church
family need to pray for these young girls and boys that they will always know that they are loved, especially by
our God. We need to encourage them and challenge them to take time daily to thank God for loving us so much
that His Son would stretch out His arms on the cross to show us that He love us more.
Last weekend we moved into the Transition phase of On Mission for The Church Alive! Included in this
bulletin is the letter that Deacon Cliff and I read at all the Masses. This letter is also being sent to all parishioners.
In this letter, Bishop Zubik summarizes the initiative On Mission for the Church Alive!: “The goal is to offer a
deeper relationship with Jesus and His Church to everyone.” I feel the announcement of our grouping of
Saint Catherine and Saint Richard along with the Clergy assigned is God showing us how much He loves us! I
also know through prayer that my new assignment to the Northern Butler County grouping is God showing me
AND telling me how much He loves me.
Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be
complete.” And what Jesus tells us is this: “I love you more!”
In Christ’s love,
Father Steve

INTRODUCTION TO READINGS: Sixth Sunday of Easter
FIRST READING: ACTS 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 - Peter was originally skeptical about preaching the Gospel to non-
Jews. Then one day, the Holy Spirit summoned him to preach to the pagan army officer Cornelius and his household. The result, as we shall see, is the first recorded conversion of Gentiles to Christianity.
SECOND READING: 1 JOHN 4:7-10 - The tradition of the apostle John’s teachings is expressed in what is called the first letter of John, There is a legend that John in his old age would simply repeat over and over to his people, “Love one another.” Today’s passage from that letter particularly illustrates this story.
LOVE ONE ANOTHER: The Call to Build Relationships – As the On Mission for The Church Alive! announcements continue to sink in, we hear Jesus’ call in today’s
Gospel to “love one another.” It’s a simple command, without condition or rationalization. To love one another is the call of the Christian life and is at the heart of the On Mission! initiative. In the coming months the parishes in our grouping will begin to work together to build relationships rooted in faith, hope and love. These relationships should not be forced or fake but should recognize that we are one in our Catholic faith and that nothing should divide us. Then, with our common faith and love for one another as our foundation, we will be able to form parishes that are truly alive as resources, efforts and energies are shared. It can be easy to love what is familiar to us. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! let us seek new ways to heed Jesus’ call to love one another. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to stay informed.

THANK YOU to Marilyn Lynch and the Chill Chasers for once again providing Genesis
of Pittsburgh with wonderful hand-made baby items...hats, sweater sets, booties and
blankets. They are all so beautiful and those receiving them are very appreciative.
We conduct the prayerful recitation of the DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET each Friday morning before Mass at 9:00 am in the Church. All are welcome to join our prayer.
DISCIPLESHIP CORNER: As we’ve discussed before, the work of the Mass is a
work of cooperation. First and foremost it is us cooperating with God, offering back to
Him what He has given to us. This is true both in the gifts of bread and wine, and in
the sacrifice of Jesus that these elements miraculous embody. (We will discuss the
Mass as a sacrifice next week.) But there is also cooperation between the priest and
the assembly. As the secret prayers end, the celebrant addresses the assembly: “Pray,
brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.”
We respond in turn: “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise
and glory of His name, for our good and for the good of all His Holy Church.”
This makes it clear that the sacrifice of the Mass is offered through the hands of the
priest. Without a celebrant, there is no sacrifice. But the sacrifice itself is not just the
priest’s offering, but ours as well. All of us at Mass are offering a sacrifice of praise
and thanksgiving to God. That is what we come for; that is what the priest does on our
behalf. The only question is, will we make that sacrifice in an acceptable manner? In
Genesis 4:3-7 we see the contrast between the perfunctory sacrifice of Cain and the
generosity of Abel, who offered the best part of his best animals to God. The choice
they made is a choice we make too. The priest is responsible for many things at Mass.
But it’s up to us to choose for ourselves what we will offer.
Challenge: Reflect on what constitutes an acceptable sacrifice to the Lord. Will we
make our offering knowingly, willingly, and with sincere praise?
—Will Reaves, Director of Evangelization & Intentional Discipleship
MUSIC NOTES: I would like to call to your attention that I have made some updates
to the Music Ministry Webpage. It now will include a “Sunday Music” page that will
feature the Propers of the Mass, the Hymns we will be singing for that weekend, the
Motets that the Choir will sing and the Organ pieces I will use. Take a look at it and I
hope you will find it useful. I would like to thank Debbie Truitt and Anne Rakszawski
for their assistance in putting this together. —God Bless, Jim Skalos, Music Minister
The SPIRITUAL THERAPEUTIC RECOVERY MINISTRY is a support group designed to serve families with loved ones struggling with addiction. This group is a
faith-based ministry that also has a clinical foundation, which recognizes that with
healthy support and boundaries from the family and trust in our Lord, recovery and
healing are made possible. David Gentile, a psychologist who has worked with this
family crisis and addiction issues for several years, as well as personal experience,
facilitates this much needed group. The ministry meets every Thursday evening from
7:00 to 8:30 pm in the Children’s Chapel. Call the Parish Office at 412-486-6001 to
register. Walk-ins are welcome!
MARRIAGE MOMENTS: On May 10, Christians celebrate Jesus’ Ascension into
heaven 40 days after Easter. But what does it mean to ascend into heaven? What does it
mean to watch a beloved spouse leave for another life after death? These are heavy
things to ponder. Talk with your beloved about what you believe about an afterlife.
