Dear Friends,“Know how much you matter to this world.” This promise speaks to more than just the patients and families we serve each day. It speaks to our incredible donors. The power of philanthropy is extraordinary, and your support of the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation in 2018 had an incredible impact on the level of care we provided our local communities.
As we reflect on 2018, we know it was you who made a difference for our patients. Your compassion and support provided comfort, created innovative opportunities for care and inspired hope.
What an exciting year it has been! As you review our 2018 Donor Journal, please know that your support is the contributing factor to our success at UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC). Your access to high quality, local health care is better than ever thanks to the completion of the renovated emergency department. Your generous gifts to the Foundation made a tremendous impact.
The Foundation is proud to say that one hundred percent of your gifts stay local to benefit the health care programs and needs in the GRMC service area. Please accept our deepest appreciation for your generous support in 2018. Know how much you matter to our patients, families and communities.
Even as the hospital serves more patients, challenges to health care funding and reimbursement are a reality facing every health care organization. It means that we must work even harder to retain access to quality, local care. Your financial support for the Foundation helps maintain quality health care services, equipment and programs that allow GRMC to meet the needs of our patients and families.
The Community Hospital opened its doors in this location in August 1919. As we approach the 100-year anniversary of our hospital at this location, our mission is the same: improve the health of the people and communities we serve. We’re proud to be your community hospital and look forward to serving our patients and communities into the next 100 years.
Thank you for your generous support to keep our health care local!

New Emergency Department Opens
Update
When minutes matter, UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is here for our communities. In February, GRMC opened the new Brownell Family Emergency Center. Championing local communities has always been a passion for the Brownell Family Foundation. The facility is named in honor of the Brownell family for their contributions of more than $250,000 to update and modernize the space. The emergency department renovation was the last major project from the medical center’s 20-year capital improvements plan.
“I have a long history with Grinnell Regional Medical Center, from serving on the board of directors to being cared for in the emergency department,” says Frank Brownell, chairman of the Brownells board. “The Grinnell area is lucky to have such a high-quality medical center and an extraordinary group of doctors, nurses and staff. The community can take comfort knowing they’ll be in good hands should they ever need
treatment. Pete and I were honored to assist with the emergency center’s remodel.”
A public open house on Wednesday, February 21 gave area residents a chance to tour the space while emergency department staff provided demonstrations of robotic stroke assessment, pediatric care, heart attack assessments and information on medication management. A ribbon cutting ceremony recognized donors who made the new emergency department possible.
“The emergency department flow is much better and overall, it is a beautiful and bright place to work,” says Gayle Johnson, RN, emergency department. “I love the bedside monitors with central monitoring, and the bedside charting enhances the workflow. The central nurses’ station allows for staff to give reports to the other members of the team and provides more privacy for patients.”
THANK YOU TO OUR MANY DONORS FOR SUPPORTING THIS IMPORTANT PROJECT!

“Having quality health care in our local communities is very important to my husband, Michael, and I,” says Susan Witt, foundation board member. “We are PROUD TO JOIN WITH MANY OTHER LOCAL FAMILIES who have generously contributed to help ensure the hospital’s continued success in providing caring and professional emergency care.”
The GRMC emergency department renovation enhances our ability to care for patients with a new triage room, four private patient rooms and two trauma bays with sliding partition walls and doors to increase room for equipment during traumas. The space also features an innovative central nurses’ station and nurse call system that provides staff with more efficient supervision of patients. New monitoring and vitals equipment in each room allow staff to more closely observe and receive constant feedback while simultaneously giving patients more privacy.
“This new space helps staff manage patients safely and more efficiently,” says Lesa Peters, RN, emergency department nurse manager. “Patients who enter the new emergency department space for the first time are amazed it is the same footprint.”

Increasing the Number of Providers at GRMCWe are committed to enhancing the quality of life and convenience of care for all we serve. UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is continually working to bring the most advanced health care services to area residents.
Since signing an affiliation agreement with UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, a primary focus of the integration has been to enhance quality care by recruiting new medical providers and visiting specialists, especially in those often hard-to-fill specialty areas.
“For our patients, it is wonderful to have access to these specialties without having to leave our community,” says Laura Ferguson, MD, president of the medical staff. “The affiliation with UnityPoint Health – Des Moines is a win-win for both health care organizations as we work together to provide more specialties right here in Grinnell.”
GRMC remains dedicated to offering high quality, specialty health care services locally. We are making it more convenient for our patients to receive advanced medical care, close to home.

New Technology on the Horizon
We are 18 months into our affiliation with UnityPoint Health and have aligned many key processes and contracts during this time. These have resulted in significant savings and improved efficiencies for our community hospital. The most exciting initiative on the docket for the fall of 2019 will be the implementation of a new electronic medical records system, called Epic. This will align all of our patient records within the UnityPoint Health system and put us on the same platform as the University of Iowa and Mayo Clinics.
The advantages of being on the same system will be transformative in our ability to improve clinical workflows and patient safety, and allow patients electronic access to their medical charts through a portal called My Chart. This patient portal offers personalized and secure online access to manage and receive information about your health. This service will be available shortly after we launch Epic on September 30.
LOCAL BUSINESS INVESTS IN LOCAL HEALTH CAREAs a local business, Bernie Lowe and Associates, Inc. understands the importance of having health care services available nearby. This commitment to the health of local communities is what inspired Bernie Lowe and Associates, Inc., to make a generous contribution toward GRMC’s physician recruitment efforts.
“We really see the value in having a local, community hospital,” says Bernard ‘Skip’ Lowe, III, president and CEO. “When you spot quality, you don’t question it. GRMC is quality; it’s the number one choice to our community members when they need hospital care. For our company, we see it as the only choice. GRMC is the place to receive the highest quality health care services in our area.”
In November 2015, Bernie Lowe and Associates pledged $25,000 to the medical center to help recruit talented physicians to practice here. A physician who commits to GRMC will receive college loan forgiveness in the amount of $5,000 for each year spent practicing
medicine in Grinnell, with the opportunity to receive a total of $25,000.
“I can appreciate how hard it can be to recruit physicians, particularly to a rural area,” says Lowe.
This donation to physician recruitment helps expand specialty health care services and allows patients to receive exceptional care closer to home.

Volunteers Make a DifferenceUnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical Center Auxiliary volunteers strive to comfort patients and support staff at GRMC by caring for our friends and families. Our volunteers do this by sharing financial support, volunteering their time and talents and providing education about health issues.
Our auxiliary has the distinction of being one of the oldest continuing hospital volunteer organizations in Iowa. The current auxiliary is historically linked to the very earliest of health care services in Grinnell.
It was on February 12, 1968, that the auxiliaries of Community Hospital and St. Francis merged to form the Grinnell General Hospital Auxiliary. The Community Hospital Auxiliary dates back to 1924 and St. Francis Auxiliary was founded in 1933.
Today, we place great value on our auxiliary, not only in terms of services and financial support, but as goodwill ambassadors in the community.
Our volunteers at GRMC make a difference in the lives of patients, families, and staff every day. Thank you to our volunteers for the impact they make every day at GRMC!

MORE THAN 400 SHIIP CLIENTS SERVEDThe Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is a free health insurance counseling service of the State of Iowa Insurance Division, sponsored locally by GRMC. Five SHIIP volunteers helped more than 400 clients better understand their Medicare benefits and options through individual counseling sessions, community education, special projects and making connections in local communities.
“We’re thrilled to offer this service to area residents,” says Dennis Day, SHIIP counselor and Foundation board member. “Medicare is such an important and comprehensive program and understanding all the parts to it helps assure that anyone eligible can receive the health benefits they deserve.”

Programs and Events
Thirty-three Senior Education Programs (SEED) were provided in Grinnell. The SEED program has been a fixture in the community for more than 20 years, and the varying program topics include health, medicine, arts, history, cultural events and community resources. Your donations to SEED help cover speaker fees and refreshments for each program.
Thank you to community members who supported the annual Golf Outing and Super Hero Run in 2018. These events were a success because of you!
Thanks to community participants and sponsors, the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation raised more than $30,000 for medical and wellness equipment.
“We are so appreciative of the fundraising support for GRMC by the community,” says Dave Vander Linden, 2018 Foundation board chair. “Thank you to all the business sponsors, community partners and participants who continue to invest in our health care system.”

Donors generously support our hospital and Foundation through bequests, charitable trusts, gift annuities, beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and other financial assets, plus many other unique giving options. The Foundation and our hospital deeply appreciate each of these legacy gifts.
Educating Generations of NursesSylvester Millgate, a veterinarian from Brooklyn, believed in the importance of recruiting high-quality nursing staff to ensure UnityPoint Health – Grinnell Regional Medical
Center (GRMC) could continue to improve the health of the people and communities we serve. When he passed away in 1974, Sylvester left a bequest to GRMC providing funds for students pursuing education at an accredited nursing school.
For Sylvester, it was important his gift would support GRMC’s commitment to providing excellent nursing care that would change lives far into the future. His generous gift helps GRMC staff continue their education through scholarships or loan forgiveness in support of nursing recruitment and retention. In 2018, GRMC employees showed their support for high-quality nursing care by supporting the Sylvester Millgate Nursing Loan Fund through the Employee Giving Campaign.
“Our ability to recruit and retain top talent in Grinnell means we must provide a great place to work
and competitive wages,” says Jennifer Havens, RN, MHA, and CEO. “Having the ability to offer scholarships or loan forgiveness to a job offer often gives us the final advantage. And once they are here, we are committed to making sure it’s a place they want stay for a career!”
The first pathway offers loans for students pursuing additional education at an accredited nursing school. In exchange, recipients can agree to repay the loan at an interest-free rate or work for a minimum time commitment at the medical center to receive loan forgiveness.
Leaving a Legacy

Investing in HealthRick and Sue Ramsey feel supporting the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation is not only an investment in their health, but also an investment in the local economy.
“We’ve always seen the medical center as an anchor to the larger community,” Sue Ramsey says. “Community members are proud of GRMC. They truly believe in it and the health care it provides.”
When Rick and Sue first began their family, they purchased a series of life insurance policies to protect their family in case of unexpected loss of income. Their children now grown and the insurance policies they purchased no longer needed, their accountant suggested they gift them. This provided a benefit to the Ramseys through an income tax reduction and gave them the opportunity to support GRMC and local health care.
“Health care is always changing. We know the challenges GRMC has faced in order to continue providing services,” says Rick Ramsey. “We continue supporting GRMC because it is important to us and we trust it to be there when we need it.”
The second pathway is to use the fund as a recruiting tool for open positions. GRMC administrators can provide loan forgiveness for nursing recruitment and retention. Recipients of a scholarship or loan forgiveness funds must agree to work six months full-time for every $1,000 received.
“The funds I received have helped me pursue my Bachelor of Science in nursing degree,” says Carla Doane, RN, nurse manager, home health. “I’ve been a nurse for 22 years. I love my position and felt I needed more education to continue in my current position. With UnityPoint Health, I noticed how much the organization wants their leaders to grow and shows employees they matter. It was difficult working full time and taking up to eight credits in an eight week period, but well worth the time and effort. The greatest benefit of receiving this financial assistance is it helps motivate other staff to go back to school. I am hopeful at least two employees in our department will also continue their education thanks to the Sylvester Millgate Nursing Loan Fund.”
In the second year of this program, seven GRMC employees applied for a loan or for loan forgiveness. The committee awarded $14,000 in financial assistance.
