Week III of Advent 2020! Okay good people, here we go closing in fast on Christmas. Let me spell out our plans once more and invite you to look forward to a meaningful and memorable experience. We are committed to ensuring that Holy Trinity’s celebration of Christmas will not be one more 2020 experience of restriction, cancellation, and isolation. So. . . . .

Masses will be held in the church on the 24th at 1:00,

3:00, and 5:00pm, and on the 25th at 9:00am, with 100 persons inside using our online sign-up as we do for weekends. Inside seating will be prioritized for our seniors and those who are “technology impaired.” Overflow will be in the parking lot in vehicles, with all four Masses live-streamed to your personal devices: phones, iPads, tablets, notebooks or ??? We have been advised that the best way to avoid crashes or lags with the livestream will be for everyone outside to turn off their Wi-Fi and use their cellular data service. Apparently, there are 4–5 cell towers in our area, with plenty of capacity to handle 300–400 people streaming at once from our parking lot.

Still, please remember that this is a first-time experience, so bring along a double portion of patience. We’ve done test runs; we’ve checked with our technology consultant, our internet provider, and our local cell providers; we have good assurances that our plan should work; but ????? Live-streaming can create slightly different delays depending on which carrier is used, so although we will be doing some

fun prompts for you to beep (not honk!) your horns, it will could well be that it won’t all be in unison. Let that be part of the fun! We will have characters from the traditional Nativity scene roaming the parking lot during Masses and anticipate Santa to even make an appearance at some point! Those of you who are creative and want to add to the fun could decorate the outside of your car.

We will have Communion stations set up outside. You will be invited to (prudently) roll down windows for some of the carol singing if you wish to get a fuller community experience, as chaotic as it might be. We will for sure be making a “joyful noise to the Lord” and for sure will honor the birth of Jesus in the fullest way we can! You will be able to look back on Christmas 2020 with fond memories guaranteed!

And for those of you who are just not comfortable with this much “community” at this time, please know that you are — of course! — most welcome to livestream from the comfort of your own home. All four live-streams will be automatically recorded and available for later viewing as well. Blessings to Connor Bizzell, Edward Horst, and Katherine Lam, who were baptized this weekend! Funeral services are planned for Carol Balcom on December 28th at 11:00am. Blessings to Mark and his family and may she rest in peace.

GREETINGS FROM F R . DAVE

Join our Filipino Community in celebrating the 22nd annual Simbang Gabi (Christmas Novena Masses) here at Holy Trinity!

From Dec. 15-23, you are invited to gather in our church at 6:30pm for the Rosary, followed by Mass at 7:00pm (except for 12/19, with

the Rosary at 5:00pm and our usual 5:30pm Mass). All

safety precautions remain in place (100 people maximum in the church, masks must be worn, social distancing must be kept, etc.) and attendees will need to sign-in when

they arrive (just like our regular daily Mass).

In lieu of the usual reception that follows the final Mass on 12/23, individual boxes of refreshments will be given away. Come experience this joyful Christmas tradition! Learn more at h-t.org/simbang-gabi.

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) recently shared in their daily e-Newsletter some reader suggestions for getting face coverings/masks to fit better, including:

If a mask is too baggy due to long ear straps, the straps can be twisted before placing over the ears for a tighter fit.

If your mask is slipping down, tie a small knot in the ear loops or pinch off the strap with a small rubber grommet that you can buy at a hardware store.

Silicone stoppers can be added to the elastic earpieces on face masks, before or after sewing. They allow the elastic to be adjusted (loosened or tightened), behind the ears so face masks are more comfortable to wear. When the stoppers are on the elastic, a face mask can be adjusted to fit snugly against the face, with no openings around the cheeks or under the chin, and the material over the nose stays put.

If you have long hair, you can slip both loops of the mask around a ponytail, rather than your ears.

Cut to fit a piece of unscented, disposable dust-collecting mop cloth (such as Swiffer), and fit it inside the mask. It gives added filtering protection for small particles and helps the cloth mask fit better to the face.

Use a small clip that has a hook on one end and a clothespin type hook on the other end. Place the hook end over the nose bridge on your glasses and fasten the clip to the mask. No nose slippage.

You can subscribe to their daily e-Newsletter at oregon.gov/oha.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION UPDATE

While we still hope to reopen our Sunday morning program later in the school year, Holy Trinity continues to have some resources available for families to continue catechizing their children at home.

1. STUDENT BOOKS. We have books available from Kindergarten to 5th grade. 2. REFLECTION VIDEOS. A new video is posted each weekend, based on the Sunday readings. 3. ADVENT PACKETS. We have activity books for the season of Advent available in the parish office and online (under ‘Advent Resources’). 4. FIRST COMMUNION. Our First Confession / First Communion program has digital material that's easy to access and designed to make it easy for families to use.

We've begun exploring some creative ways to offer safe, live instruction for kids and families after the New Year. Keep checking this spot for updates! If you'd like a copy of a grade-level student book, please email Ally ([email protected]).

Happy Advent!

F AMILY F AITH R EFLECTIONS Chris Storm— [email protected]

Jesus is the reason for the season, but not without Mary! And you know why! Mary, full of grace, said a “yes” that continues to resound throughout the ages.

In Advent, we celebrate two Marian (Mary) feasts, important ones, both this past week. On 12/8 we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Think of this: Mary was created without SIN. There was a time when humanity was intrigued by this belief; sad that it isn’t better known today. Remember, as sinners, you and I should be amazed by the grace-filled gift that God has given Mary, protecting her from the taint of original sin that all humanity suffers from. Mary was spared of that. She becomes both a model and inspiration for us. Pope IX, in a Papal Bull, Ineffabilis Deus (Ineffable God), defined this belief and promulgated (put into effect) it on this day in 1854.

In 1858, Mary appeared 18 times in Lourdes, France. When asked who she was, she said, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” How beautiful! And 300 years earlier, Mary appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico and converted a nation. We celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe on 12/12 and remember our holy mother and the power of her faithfulness to God.

If this isn’t enough to celebrate, this is also Gaudete Sunday. This break from purple to pink reminds us that Jesus is near! What to do now? Be ready! From St. Paul: “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” Let’s use these last days of Advent well. May God bless us as we prepare to celebrate Christmas! +

M INISTRY NEWS

“[I ask God to] prepare our hearts to encounter our brothers and sisters, so that we may overcome our differences. . .” —Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti

Third Week of Advent: Ecological Conversion From the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns Advent Reflections

“. . .‘As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, so will the Lord God make justice and praise spring up before all the nations.’ . . . [In Isaiah’s imagery], the health of the earth is likened to spiritual health and union with God. Holiness and wholeness are represented by abundance, beauty, and natural flourishing, in contrast to dryness and decay. . .[which] is not only a metaphor, but increasingly a reality. . . . The overconsumption of those in wealthy countries leads to entrenched poverty in developing countries, which in turn leads to conflict over resources and violence. This cycle of violence. . .is an enormous impediment to peace. Building a culture of peace requires an ‘ecological conversion,’ Pope Francis says. . .[which] entails personal change of habits [and] working toward structural change. . .to care for the earth more easily and affordably.”

Reflect: Have you ever had experiences that nudged you toward “ecological conversion” — a moment in nature, a learning experience about climate change, a time of prayer?

THANK YOU!

When Fr. Dave mentioned that the traditional Thanksgiving Mass is one of his favorites, I had to nod in agreement. As he shared his idea about inviting those who were interested in participating in a drive-through food drive I was excited. Neither of us knew if 10 cars would come or 100. Did you surprise us! Hundreds of cars and thousands of pounds of food in a little over an hour. The generosity that so clearly runs through this church was evident again; so much so that our once empty shelves were full again. As you can see from the pictures below, there was not much space left anywhere. Between the food and the financial donations you provided we will be able to feed hundreds of families. You clearly know how to

GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

December 12: Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe

“Our Lady of Guadalupe has been honored by twenty-five popes. She has been formally declared Patroness and Mother of the Americas. Informally, she is honored as Patroness of Unborn Children because she appeared to Juan Diego as a pregnant woman and, in the seven years after the apparitions, approximately eight million Aztec

people converted to Catholicism, and abandoned a culture of death that had practiced human sacrifice, including infant sacrifice. May we, through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, see an end to the killing of vulnerable people in our own day, whether through abortion, euthanasia, or neglect of their basic human needs.” —USCCB
