Background & motivationK n O R R - B R E M S E G L O B a L C a R E E . V . was set up on January 18, 2005 in the wake of the tsunami disaster on december 26, 2004 in Southern asia with the aim of providing carefully targeted, effective help to the victims of the disaster. The Knorr-Bremse Group made € 2 million available for this purpose. Following successful completion of these projects, the deci-sion was made to continue the work of Knorr-Bremse Global Care world-wide and to provide annual funding totaling € 1 million.

The purpose of the association is to provide long-term aid to individuals at home and abroad who are in need as a result of environmental catastrophes, accidents, armed conflicts, poverty or disease. The measures aim to put those affected in a position to earn their own independent living and feed them-selves and their families. The most important criterion is “helping people to help themselves”.

Practical implementation of projects is carried out in cooperation with local partners under the active supervision of members of Knorr-Bremse Global Care e. V. in Munich. In addition, all projects are inspected either by members of the association or by selected Knorr-Bremse staff in order to ensure their success and sustainability. The association’s charitable status has been recognized by the tax authorities in Munich.

ProjectsOverview of activities in africa Knorr-Bremse Global Care aims to provide help where it is most urgently needed, and in 2006 members decided to put the main focus on africa. Project work was launched that year and continued throughout 2007.

high levels of illiteracy in Mali and Ethiopia (76% and 48.2% respectively) prompted the association to carry out educational projects in these two countries; in Tanzania, many people are suffering from the effects of hIV, and for this reason the association funded the construction of a youth centre for aIdS orphans. In South africa, Global Care supported a children‘s hospital that is open to all young patients in sub-Saharan africa.

all projects in africa are supervised by members of the association and person-ally inspected by them or by other selected Knorr-Bremse staff. By december 2007, approximately one quarter of the planned annual budget of € 1 million had been spent on projects in africa.

Ethiopia – Construction of a primary school

In a bid to generally improve the educational situation in Ethiopia, funding was provided to construct and equip Yembero Lower Primary School for some 1,000 pupils in grades 1 to 8. The project involved constructing three school buildings, each with four classrooms, an administrative building with staff rooms and two further buildings to provide accommodation for the teachers.

The project partner was Karlheinz Böhm’s Munich-based organization Menschen für Menschen, which has many years of experience and valuable knowledge of local structures. On completion, the school was handed over to the provincial government, which will be responsible for administering it and covering the running costs.

Mali – Extension of a primary school

In n’Tjiba community a new building with three classrooms was constructed and equipped next to an existing primary school. The aim is to increase the proportion of local children starting primary school from the current rate of 5%.

It was a staff member at Knorr-Bremse Commercial Vehicle Systems who drew the association’s attention to the situation in Mali; she had already been in-volved in various local aid projects and was acquainted with former GTz officer Stephanie Kürsten Camara, who took on the task of coordinating the project.

ProjectsOverview of activities in asia

Completing tsunami projectsKnorr-Bremse Global Care was founded in the wake of the devastating tsunami in december 2004. Since 2005, more than 13 projects have been launched in the region affected by the disaster, and all of these have now been success-fully completed. One project, the funding of a scholarship program, continues to run as planned until 2009.

Educational projects in asia In addition to the projects in africa, further educational projects have been launched in asia – for example the construction of a junior high school in Cambodia, the building of a hostel for vocational students in India and the refurbishment/extension of a primary school in China. The last two projects in this list are situated close to a Knorr-Bremse site.

all aid projects in asia are supervised by members of the association and personally inspected by them or by other selected Knorr-Bremse staff.

By december 2007, about one third of the budget of € 1 million for projects in asia had been spent.

Cambodia – Construction of a junior high school

Global Care has been funding the construction of the Junior high School in Peak Sneng, a village in the angkor Thom district of Cambodia. In this region many young people do not attend secondary school at all, as the nearest one is too far away for daily attendance. Construction of the school aims to raise educational levels in the region and offer the inhabitants an alternative to agricultural work.

The school offers places for up to 150 pupils in grades 7-9. The building comprises three classrooms, a computer room, a library and a staff room; a canteen, washroom facilities and a further building to accommodate the teachers have also been built.

The other partners in this project are the Munich-based association zukunft für Kinder der Welt, which Global Care came across via the KB network, and Life and hope association, a local Cambodian relief association.

Sri Lanka – rebuilding 75 homes

With the help of un-habitat and the involvement of Kalmunai Community, Knorr-Bremse Global Care is funding the rebuilding of 75 homes in Kalmunai that were destroyed by the tsunami in 2005. Local inhabitants have been involved in the construction process, and the government has drawn on inter-national funds to provide a subsidy of 2,500 uS dollars for each house.

The project started in May 2006, but problems with supplies of materials and late payments by the government delayed completion from december 2006 to november 2007.

Indonesia – funding a scholarship program for students

200 registered students (incl. students of agriculture, medicine, veterinary medicine) who lost their parents and/or homes in the tsunami receive a scholarship of € 30 per month (evidence of performance required).

Originally approved for a period of two years, successful implementation of the project and the urgent need for continued funding have resulted in the project being extended for a further two years.

The project has been implemented with the help of the existing partnership between the universities in Banda aceh and Göttingen. The payments are transferred on a quarterly basis to the university of Göttingen, which ensures local distribution of the money.

ProjectsOverview of activities at the Munich site

Knorr-Bremse has a long tradition of social and cultural involvement. Most company sites are involved in supporting local good causes and helping others either in the form of donations or active involvement by members of the work-force.

Many employees are keen to help people in need but cannot always find a way of doing so. In order to strengthen the social commitment of Knorr-Bremse sites worldwide and increase the positive impact on the surrounding environ-ment in which they operate, the association has now also launched projects in Munich.

Munich – clothing for Ethiopia

at the suggestion of the German ambassador of Ethiopia dr. Claas dieter Knoop and his wife Monika, and with the help of free carriage of 500 kg offered by Ethiopian airlines, the association organized a collection of clothing for Ethiopia at Knorr-Bremse’s Munich site.

Between July 5 and 10, 2007 the Munich workforce of some 1,600 donated more than 1,400 kg of clothing – more than double the weight that Ethiopian airlines had offered to carry.

association member Mario Beinert had made contact with dr. Knoop and his wife Monika during a visit to Yembero Lower Primary School in Ethiopia. On its arrival at the German Embassy in addis abeba, the clothing was distributed personally by Monika Knoop to various hospitals, an orphanage and a number of street children projects.

Munich – mentoring project for school pupils in Munich north

almost one in five pupils in Munich leaves school without any qualification. a combination of problematic social conditions and a difficult job market means that at an early age these young people are denied any prospects of pro-fessional or personal development. The “KOMM in die zukunft” mentoring project was set up to help children to improve their educational qualifications. KOMM provides young people with a mentor to assist them with job searches and job applications and help them prepare for interviews; the aim is to help them achieve a school qualification that either enables them to transfer to a higher secondary school or to gain access to working life.

The project partner is the association Bürgertreff e.V., which was set up to support structurally weak urban districts in Munich and is responsible for running the mentoring project.
