We’re not just an innovator, but a pioneer pushing the boundaries in technical knitting capabilities to create products with beautiful, aesthetic styling, featuring ground breaking constructions and textures.Our technical knitting capability complements perfectly our weaving expertise, enabling us to provide fully finished fabric components which are knitted as three dimensional upholstery covers, as fabric mesh variants, or ShrinKnit fabric panels using innovative Shrinx technology. We love collaborating with product designers at the design stage, or we can retro-fit a fabric to an existing chair frame or base. Whatever way, it’s generally knit to fit in just a few simple steps.

Fabric component type

Three dimensional upholsteryThis is the original, classic 3D application for seat bases or backs. They differ from flat woven fabrics in that they’re precision knit as a three dimensional component part, designed to fit over furniture foam to the exact curves and contours of the individual shape. There are no seams or pleats, therefore no seam slippage and no puckering.

Single Mesh fabricThis is a semi transparent mesh membrane for chair backs, creating a self supporting suspension fabric in a single knitted fabric layer. Integral perimeter apertures allow clever concealment and simple slip-over installation on tubular frames.

Knitted Fabric bagThis works on the pillow case principle, providing double fabric layers with a knitted top enclosure and bottom opening section which is slipped on and pulled taut over a back frame.

ShrinKnitUsing patented Shrinx technology, this is a flexible system which uses innovative heat sensitive shrink yarns to create the simplest upholstery solutions for chair backs (either mesh or fabric).

This is the starting point for any knitted fabric so that it becomes an integral element of the furniture design. Always easy to fit, with unique aesthetics and functionality.Technical knitting generally falls into two broad categories: – classic three dimensional covers knitted without seams to fit precisely to specific chair shapes; or three types of fabric mesh variants which are applied to a chair frame to bring tension and support. Our woven upholstery fabrics, leather and vinyls are designed and coloured to work in complete synergy with our technical knits.

Myriad yarn and construction options create textile surfaces with unique visual appeal. While in-built ergonomic sensibility caters for added user-comfort in an intelligent upholstery solution. Knitted designs provide both aesthetics and functionality. Our range of Oeko-tex approved coloured polyester yarns can be used individually for solid colouration or blended together to form distressed “mélange” effects. And the clever weft knitted structure provides for controlled elasticity and tensioning.

Colours We have a standard palette comprising the 10 most popular commercial colourways. There’s no need to feel constrained, though, as we can draw on a huge bank of colourway options, with realistic minimum order commitments.

Fabric construction and formation One of the fundamental advantages of a technical knitted fabric is that it can flex, mould and sculpt to accommodate unique furniture curvatures, as well as adding ergonomic support to the user. Variable structures or stitch types can be knitted in zones to increase or decrease tensioning, giving postural advantages without the need for a traditional lumbar support.

ShrinKnit is an ingenious system which employs patented Shrinx technology to allow a much simplified, quicker and easier upholstery process for knitted meshes and fabrics. It works on a “shrink to fit” principle, whereby an oversized component is knitted and attached to the chair frame using methods such as Keder strips, staples or drawstring. Steam or heat is then applied and the heat sensitive yarns shrink the fabric to fit precisely to the chair frame. Once shrunk, the interlocked knitted loops are fixed and set in place, with each loop anchored to the next, guaranteeing consistent tension over time.

Methods of shrinking the fabric Shrink methods include radiant heat, oven or steam, to generate a temperature range of 100C – 115C which is applied to the fabric for around 12 to 15 seconds. Working with thermal engineers, Camira can advise on or support the creation of your own bespoke heating system if required.

Camira Technical Knitting uses state of the art flat-bed weft knitting technology for an environmentally benevolent waste free manufacturing process using just three basic inputs – yarn, electricity and gentle steam finishing. Each 100% polyester filament yarn used is certified to the global Oeko-Tex Standard 100 which prohibits the use of harmful substances in textiles known to be hazardous to the environment and human health. Every cover produced is also accredited to the independent and 3rd party verified EU Ecolabel environmental standard for textile products.
