Row 71 Knit
Row 72 P2tog (10 times) (you will have
10 stitches on needle)
Cut yarn leaving 12” tail. Thread the tail onto
a tapestry needle and slip the yarn through the 10
stitches on your knitting needles, pull closed and sew
MC seam down to legs. Sew one leg completely
closed and the other, sew the foot closed, leaving
opening on the inside leg.
STUFF
Using fiberfill, stuff the critter body lightly and
evenly. Stuff the snout and sew to the side opening of
the face. The wool will shrink during the felting
process and the fiberfill will not so you won’t need much
stuffing. Expect your critter to be very soft before felting
and firming up as it dries. Sew leg closed
ARMS (make 2)
* With MC Cast on 12 stitches
Row 1 – 24 St st (24 rows)
Row 25 K2tog across row (you will have
6 stitches)
Cut yarn leaving 12 “ tail. Thread tapestry needle with
tail and slip through 6 stitches , pull tight and secure.
Sew up the arm, stuff lightly and stitch opening
together. Sew arm onto body at shoulder level.
NECK
Using MC, secure a 12” strand of yarn to the base
of the head (back of head). Thread into tapestry
needle and weave in and out around the base of
the head and pull tight to create the neck. Secure.
MANE
With C1 cut 135 8” strands. Take an 8” piece and
fold in half to form a loop. With a crochet hook,
pull the loop through under the layer of knitted
stitches and lock in place by pulling the two ends
through the loop and pulling tight.
For Bonaparte’s “Mane” place a row of tufts
beginning at the middle of the forehead
continuing around the head, behind the ears and
under the chin. You can put 2-3 rows at the top of
the head down to the ears. Refer to his picture for
placement.
Tail
* With MC Cast on 32 stitches
Next row bind off all stitches. Sew the tail to the back
seam on the bottom about 1” up from the legs. Using C1
Cut 4, 4” pieces of yarn and loop through the end of the
tail.
FELT PREP
Once the body is stuffed, the neck defined and the
arms attached, it’s time to wet felt. To hold the
stuffing in place during the felting process, take
lengths of the non-wool binding yarn and using a
tapestry needle, pass it through the body, legs and
arms at various points and secure. Be sure to go
through the body from side to side. Don’t bring
the yarn across the body or face or you will have
scarring.
DO NOT PUT YOUR CRITTER IN A BAG!
FELT
Set top loading washer on small load, hot wash –cold rinse. Use a small amount of liquid soap and set for maximum agitation time. (Note – you can add a pair of jeans and a few tennis balls to the washer to help with agitation but DO NOT ADD ANYTHING “FUZZY” – towels, etc.) Check progress before it goes to rinse cycle. If it’s felted to the degree you want, remove and rinse by hand. If it isn’t, leave it in the washer and reset the agitation for another cycle. Remove before it spins and rinse by hand. Blot in a towel and pull into shape.
FINISH
Once the critter is dry, trim yarn ends and add
whatever facial features you would like using
embroidery, needle felting, etc. Make it your own
and have fun!
