Grand Knight’s Message

Ernie Rodriguez

Worthy Brothers,

June 2019 was a very busy month for our Council with lots of activities which continue to show our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Here are some of those activities:

• On June 23, St Patrick’s celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi with a procession after the 11:30 am Mass. This Feast is also known in Liturgical Latin as Dies Sanctissimi Corporis et Sanguinis Domini lesu Christi celebrating the Real Presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the elements of the Eucharist.

• On June 26, the Installation of Council 9993 newly elected Officers and Ladies Auxiliary was celebrated at the Pikes Peak Center. This ended with an outstanding meal that included ribs, brisket, chicken and an assortment of side dishes followed by apple and pecan pie for dessert.

• On June 27th, a few of our Brothers and wives got their hands dirty and callused helping Habitat for Humanity on Legislative Building Day. Our city Mayor, Suthers was present and was shown what our hard work provides to our community for families who need a home. Their work schedule is Wednesday – Saturday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. You do not need to be there the entire work day. If you are interested in volunteering, please notify your Grand Knight Ernie Rodriguez.

• On June 30th, a Corporate Communion was held at the 9:30 Mass preceded by the recitation of the Rosary by our Brother Knight Deacon Matt Kasper. Our Corporate Communion is an opportunity for all of the Knights of our Council and their families to sit and pray together in a show of unity and fraternity.

Outgoing Grand Knight’s Message

Jaime Santos “…there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one

part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

~ 1 Corinthians 12:25-26

One Nation Under God Did you know Catholics played a vital role in putting “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance?

In this week’s episode of The Catholic Talk Show, Ryan Scheel, Ryan DellaCrosse, and Fr. Rich Pagano discuss the “true history of Catholicism in America.”

In this portion of the episode, Ryan Scheel explains how Catholics played a vital role in putting “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.

“The Knights of Columbus really integrated Catholics into civil society and into America as patriotic. They wanted society to understand that Catholics were just as patriotic and just as devoted to their country,” Scheel explains.

“They helped politicians understand that Catholics were their constituents, and that they were very patriotic, good, tax-paying, law-abiding citizens who would fight to the death to defend this country.

“One of the things that they did as part of this program was petition multiple politicians to get the words “under God” added to the Pledge of Allegiance.”

“In 1951, the Knights of Columbus held their national meeting. They passed a resolution to say ‘under God’ after the word ‘one nation’ at their internal meetings.

“One year later, all Knights councils did this when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of every meeting. So at the next year’s meeting, they said, ‘Let’s get this on a national level. This is great!’

“They then sent letters to the president, vice president, and the speaker of the House, but there was no response. So the following year, they sent a letter to every single member of Congress saying, “We would like to add the words ‘under God’ to the Pledge of Allegiance.

“That year, 17 different legislators in the House of Representatives submitted a bill for its passage, adding the words ‘under God’ to the Pledge of Allegiance.

“In 1954, a joint resolution of congress passed one of those 17 bills. Eisenhower signed it on Flag Day on June 14, 1954.”

Eisenhower [said] this after signing the resolution: “From this day forward, the millions of our schoolchildren will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural schoolhouse, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty.”

“In this way, we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America’s heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country’s most powerful resource, in peace or in war.”

Brother Knights Al Pfeifer, Ernie Rodriguez and Ron Krom spent two days repairing and sprucing up the gazebo. They painted it with primer and a finish coat and floor boards were also replaced. The parish placed the statue of Our Lady and has further plans to install lights, seats, and flowers so that people will find it a welcome spot to pray and meditate. The gazebo was originally built as a Boy Scout Eagle project to enhance the prayer garden, also an Eagle project.
