Charity Fund Raising
Pennies for Wheelchairs
Report from G.K. Eardley Adams
The Knights of Columbus in partnership with the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation (CWF) initiated this project. The Ontario State Office of the Knights of Columbus requested that councils throughout Ontario raise funds to purchase new wheelchairs. These wheelchairs normally retail for $600 or more but can be purchased and shipped to 3rd world countries for the low cost of $150 when purchased through CWF. Instead of simply writing a cheque council executive proposed to conduct a fund raising project that could involve the entire parish. Instead of paying for only one or two wheelchairs with a cheque this worthy cause would attract the attention of parishioners and perhaps provide 10 or 15. The Federal Government’s decision to remove the one cent coin from circulation has provide an excellent opportunity to capitalize on this event by collecting these pennies that have accumulated in jars and bottles in our homes. A blue bin in the church foyer is the collection site every week end until December 31,2012. All donations are greatfully accepted including silver coins, American currency and cheques. The project received the approval of Fr. Dominic Barber and the parish administration. To date collected and rolled coins have provide for the purchase of seven wheelchairs.
Unionville Festival
Arthritis Society Raffle Results
Many years ago our Council’s participation in the Unionville Festival began with the sale of strawberries and ice cream. This year strawberries were washed , hulled and sliced by this team.
The success of the Knightsburger at the Markham Fair has prompted the inclusion of this delicious cuisine to the Unionville Festival menu.
Thousands of volunteer hours are contributed annually by council members to raise funds to support Knights of Columbus charities.
In this Issue you will find recent activities and projects accomplished by our members this summer under Knights of Columbus Principles of Charity , Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.
Issue # 9 August 2012
Basil Gigliozzi and his team of volunteers sold more than 260 books (4000 Tickets) of Arthritis Society Raffle Tickets. Our council received 35% of the sale from these tickets. Approximately 200 hours of volunteer time was expended. Basil organized nine venues for week end sales. Stan Kamski recruited the volunteers. Thanks to all who took their turn in making this project another success.
