GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Gentlemen,

I hope that everyone’s Easter was Blessed and Peaceful.

April was a really easy month in the council, not much going on. May on the other hand will be heating up.

May 11th will be our Annual Clergy Appreciation Dinner at Columbian Hall @ 630 PM. Contact either Sam Pellegrino or yours truly for tickets, See the flyer on page 15 in this month’s newsletter for details.

May 13th has the Community Fun Fair aka the Fishing Derby at Columbus Park. I wish I could be there; it is a lot of fun seeing kids catch their first fish. I will be in Corvallis watching my daughter slam volleyballs at the opposition.

May 19th through 21st will be the event some of us have been working on for well over a year - the 114th Annual State Convention at the Red Lion Hotel in Tumwater with Mass and Friday Night Dinner at Sacred Heart. Come by the hotel during the weekend to pick up some KofC Swag at the country store.

Finally, May 29th brings the Memorial Mass at St. Mike's Downtown and Procession at Calvary Cemetery in Tumwater afterward. Sir Knight Sam Pellegrino will be serving a Brunch at The Event Center after the Procession.

Respectfully,

Michael R. Colosi, Grand Knight Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643

K of C “Schola Cantorum”

We want you!! We are in need of new members. The only requirements are an appreciation of traditional Sacred Music as well as more contemporary and patriotic music, the ability to carry a tune, and the enjoyment of fellowship with other Schola members. We meet on Tuesday evenings, beginning 3-4 weeks prior to a scheduled event, at Pellegrino’s Event Center on Littlerock Rd. at 7pm. Light refreshments are usually provided. We

sing for such events as Memorial Day Mass at St. Michael Church, followed by ceremonies at Calvary Cemetery, our annual Memorial Day Mass for deceased members at the Hall, our annual Christmas recital for the Council and 4th Degree Christmas party, and any other special events that we are invited to sing at. We have become especially well known, in past recent years, for our singing of the National Anthem at Cheney Stadium, prior to one of the Rainier’s games. If you are interested, please call Sam Pellegrino at (360) 259-7337.

FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR’S MESSAGE

Dear Brothers and Sir Knights:

The tomb is empty! He is Risen! I pray your Easter season will be full of blessings and God’s grace. The month of May promises to be full of opportunities to worship and serve.

The Annual Clergy Appreciation Banquet will be on 11 May, at 6:30 PM at Columbian Hall. It promises to once

again be a wonderful event put on by Sam Pellegrino. Please come out and join us.

The Knight’s Night at The Community Kitchen will be on 11 May. If you’d like to check it out and serve please give me a call. We served a pancake breakfast (In the honored Knights tradition) at The Community Kitchen on Holy Thursday. 125+ guests were served an evening breakfast of pancakes, ham, tropical fruit, and yes colored hard boiled Easter eggs, and homemade blueberry buckle topped with ice cream. See the storyboard in the newsletter for pictures. PS, not all of the

blueberry buckle made it out of the kitchen to be served, the volunteers like their desserts as much as anyone!

We will have a Habitat For Humanity (HFH) build day on Saturday, 6 MAY. I know its short notice but please come out and join us in serving the community and HFH. South Puget Sound Habitat For Humanity is just now getting to dig out the next two lots and hope to pour new foundations by the end of April ( but they really need the weather to cooperate!) with all this rain the construction site has just been too darn wet! We will be building some 4' x 8' outdoor sheds for the future and current homeowners and doing a little volunteer training at the same time. They are calling it the Basic Framing Certificate course and would love for the Knights to come out and build some sheds at Deyoe Vista. Please call or email me if you will be able to participate. Hope to see you at Devoe Vista!

In Peace to Serve,

Randy Kinsey Faithful Navigator St. Francis of Assisi, Assembly 1183 [email protected]

Benedictine Novice Molly Cady at St. Placid Priory

In April 4, 2014, God gifted the community at St. Placid Priory with a new and wonderful vocation. Molly Cady came to seek God with the Benedictine Sisters at St. Placid Priory in Lacey. As she is currently a canonical novice, Molly is now known as Novice Molly.

Novice Molly was born in Bend, Oregon. She is the oldest of Ross and Cindy Cady's four children and grew up in Spokane, Washington, and Tigard, Oregon. For the bulk of her adult life, she has lived in the Seattle and Tacoma metro areas. Prior to coming to religious life, she worked for a manufacturer and was responsible for purchasing parts and equipment to keep the production process operating efficiently. She also served on the company's safety committee.

One of highlights of her life was visiting the Holy Land with her Aunt Susan and having the Scriptures come alive when visiting the places where Jesus lived and ministered.

When asked how she came to know St. Placid Priory, Novice Molly says that she “found the place of St. Placid Priory through the retreat house. On my retreat I read a brochure in my room about the Benedictine way, values and charism. I felt like I was reading a pamphlet about myself, about who I am. I thought to myself, 'I think I have found what I have been looking for.'”

While on retreat, she met the Sisters for the first time. Novice Molly said, “I found the Sisters open and inviting. They have, and still often do, hold my questioning and questing quietly and gently with me.”

The Priory is situated on about 60 acres of Douglas fir forest in Lacey. This environment also resonated with her soul. “The still beauty of the grounds and the perpetual motion of the trees form the perfection of community and urban life within a shelter of wooded land.”

Since entering St. Placid Priory, as a postulant and now as a novice, she has had formation classes taught by our Sisters. These classes include monastic history, the Rule of St. Benedict and the monastic promise (vows). Her favorite spiritual writers are Brother David Steindl-Rast, OSB, and Cistercian Father Michael Casey.

In conjunction with her formation classes, she has attended classes at St. Martin's University. There she has taken Hebrew Scriptures, Christian Scriptures, and Benedictine Spirituality. At St. Martin's University, she found a love for learning languages. She has completed courses in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. She was also surprised to find she has a great aptitude for mathematics.

Novice Molly says that for her the key to living the monastic way is to live with an open heart. She says, “St. Benedict's practice of prayer, holy work, obedience, hospitality and humility nurtures this. This practice forms a discipline which develops a belief system. A belief system is lived out through the heart of the monastic.”

Novice Molly's friendly and out-going spirit is a great blessing to the community at St. Placid Priory. Her kind and welcoming spirit is so appreciated by the Sisters, affiliates, oblates, associates, and guests at the Priory.

The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Knight of the Month for

March 2017 is Brother Edward Harrison.

The Father Nicholas Rausch O.S.B. Council 1643 Knight of the month for March is Ed Harrison. Ed and his wife Mary are members of St. Michael Parish where Ed frequently serves as a Eucharistic Minister. Ed is an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus for over 35 years of continuous membership as a Knight. He is a 4th degree member and has been a Sir Knight for over 21 years. Ed serves as a member of the 4th

Degree Color Guard and can often be seen in his regalia as a member of an Honor Guard at a funeral or other event.

Ed was born in Malta and came to the United States when he was 10 years old. He is a naturalized citizen of

the United States and has siblings scattered about the world from his native Malta to Australia. Mary and Ed met on http://www.catholicmatch.com and were married four months later on September4, 2004. They are a blended family with children and grandchildren from their previous marriages. One of their children, Alan, lives in Hawaii. This presents a great vacation destination for Ed and Mary. They spent 4 weeks at Alan’s over Christmas and New Year’s and will be returning for another visit this year. Ed has also travelled to Australia to visit his brother Joe. Joe lived just north of Sydney and died on July1, 2013 at the age of 92.

Ed retired from his position as an accountant at PSE. He served as Financial Secretary of our council. Over the past year, Ed has been incredibly helpful to our new Financial Secretary David Gedrose and the other council officers producing all the background financial materials for the most recent council audit and also has taken on the task of producing the council’s tax return for the past year. Ed was also a charter member of St. Denis Council 11260 in Diamond Bar, California.

Ed and Mary are in attendance at most KC sponsored events in the Olympia area. Ed often serves as photographer at these events. Many of his great photos can be viewed on the council website at www.kofc1643.org. If you have not yet done so, you should take the opportunity to go to the web site and spend some time viewing the many excellent photos that are posted there. We congratulate Ed Harrison for being selected for the prestigious award of Knight of the Month. Our council, and the St. Michael Parish Community, are truly blessed to have this special Knight in our midst.

In California he was a cement finisher, but in 1995, a friend suggested they move to Washington for better work opportunities and he joined him. Once here, there was a sever ice storm that took out the electricity for several days and left with without food and an income. He was tempted to return to California, but after the ice melted things improved and he decided to stay. He was able to expand his trade from just cement finishing to include all carpentry activities in

home building.

He joined the Knights because he was the member of the men’s group at St. Michael’s. One of the Knights in that group suggested he join the Council. He joined so that he could give back to the community. He now says: “I would like to add that I am so very honored and thankful for the Knights of Columbus! All the great things we do for the community is truly a blessing. I very much appreciate all the great man that I have met and have befriended me in one way or another! God bless the Knights of Columbus!”

Thank you, Brother Mike, for all that you continue to do, and congratulations on being selected as our Knight of the Month for April.

The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Family of the Month for April 2017 is Brother Phil and Mary-Jo Kelley.

Father Nicholas Rausch O.S.B. Council 1643 is pleased to announce the Family of the Month for April 2017 as Brother Phil and Mary-Jo Kelley, and their children, Philip, Joanne, and Kevin. Phil and Mary-Jo also have

three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter!

Phil is a retired Air Defense Artillery Officer who chose after many moves to bring up his family in the great Northwest! Subsequent to his military career, he worked for the State of Washington in the Division of Child Support, an avocation that allowed him to make the most of his humanitarian attitude as well as his organizational skills gained from being a career army officer.

In addition to being a Third Degree member of Council 1643, he is a member of the 4th Degree St. Francis of Assisi Assembly 1183 and has held the role of Faithful Comptroller for many years. In the community, Phil is an Audubon Society volunteer and can be seen guiding walks at the Nisqually Walk Refuge in Lacey. He is also active with the Washington Junior Golf Association helping junior golfers with the myriad of rules for playing the game.

Phil’s wife, Mary-Jo, recently retired from the office at the St. Michael Parish, where she was involved in Faith Formation activities. In addition, she is a lector for the 7:30 AM Sunday Mass at St. Michael Downtown while Phil is a Eucharistic Minister at the same Mass.

For the Council, Mary-Jo is responsible for creating all of the tickets that we use for various events put on by the Council, including the just-completed St. Patrick’s Day event at Hallen Hall and the Cowboy Barbecue held in early September.

Together, the Kelley family helps out with the St. Joseph’s Day celebration meals, and the subsequent clean-up, and has been very active with the Auction for Vocations where last year they donated a marvelous Italian Dinner for 8!! Don’t worry, while Phil may have the Irish in him, Mary-Jo is of certified Italian roots.

Council 1643 Officers and members would like to congratulate the Kelley family for their good work over the many years of their Catholic lives. They have been active and devoted Christians and have practiced their Catholic Faith admirably!! Please extend hearty congratulations to the Kelley family as they join the fine group of Families of the Month in Council1643.
