NOTE FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT

Worthy Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Good day to you all. I hope that each of you have found your days well.

Well time has flown by hasn’t it? Sunday is the beginning of Advent as we prepare for the

Birthday of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Month of November wasn’t as busy as the previous month. We had to cancel a First degree due to no candidates being presented from any Councils -and we also cancelled the Pancake Breakfast due to

the fast approaching Breakfast with St. Nick. Brother Afton Kidd

will again be St Nick for this festivity.

November 10th we helped man watering stations for the Honor

Ride that benefits Veterans, and there was over 11 Brothers from the Council who assisted with this noble effort. Plus we all had fun doing this

as well.

November 12th was Veterans Day and there was a parade downtown in

their honor done by the Knights and the Catholic War Veterans post

1947. On the 17-18 of November the Ladies Auxiliary had a very successful Bundt cake sale in the Plaza.

November 22nd was Thanksgiving. There was also a Mass celebrated at the Church that day as well.

November 24th -25th the Ladies Auxiliary held their Religious goods sale in the St Francis room and

from what I understand the Parishioners really like the new space (St Francis and Clair Room) for their

“Inspirational Gift Shoppe” sales and the tasteful way the Ladies have it displayed. In closing I’d like to wish each of you Gods many Blessings and that you all have a happy safe and

Healthy Holidays and a prosperous Blessed New Year.

Yours in Christ,

Ray Foster

A LITTLE HUMOR….

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!"

His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means? The son replied, "I do know!"

"Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?" "That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly," It

stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.' B

*************************************************************************************** “The liturgy of Advent...helps us to understand fully the value and meaning of the mystery of Christmas. It is not just about commemorating the historical event, which occurred some 2,000 years ago in a little village of Judea.

Instead, it is necessary to understand that the whole of our life must be an ‘advent,’ a vigilant awaiting of the final coming of Christ. To predispose our mind to welcome the Lord who, as we say in the Creed, one day will come to

judge the living and the dead, we must learn to recognize him as present in the events of daily life. Therefore, Advent is, so to speak, an intense training that directs us decisively toward him who already came, who will

come, and who comes continuously.”

Blessed Pope John Paul II

*************************************************************************************************** Financial Secretary’s Blotter- Notes from your Financial Secretary A Big Hello Brothers, The Calm before the storm! The month of November has been an easy slide for the Financial Secretary. With all the emphasis placed on Thanksgiving, travel and family traditions there was little activity surrounding the Council. Both the end of Month Breakfast and 1st degree exemplification events were cancelled. I had an opportunity to take a breath - but look out! Here comes December! December will start with the “Keeping Christ in Christmas” button drive, followed by the “Breakfast with Santa”. Don’t forget the “Ladies Christmas Party” at Siena Golf Club on the 14th of December. A trip for myself and GK Ray Foster for the mid-term meeting”. Then the following day will be the mailing of the “Knights Annual Dues” and invoicing to be mailed out! Brothers, our dues will remain at 42.00 for the calendar year Jan 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. Obviously, I will be very busy throughout December. Please keep me in your prayers. If ANYONE has a change of address, please

let me know. We want to make sure you get your invoice. If you need to get me new address or contact information you can Email: [email protected] As always, it is pleasure to serve you, the Council and the Church – God Bless you all. Yours in Christ,

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF FATHER MCGIVNEY Founder of the Knights of Columbus in 1882

*****************************************************************************************

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son Jesus Christ more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the

inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J McGivney on earth according to the design of Your Holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (make your request) Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Our Council is in urgent need of two Brothers interested in learning and assuming some of the cooking and kitchen management responsibilities for our events. If you have cooking experience, or just have an interest in learning more about cooking, this is an opportunity for you to serve us and your Parish. You will work alongside our current cook and learn our systems with the intent that you would assist with food planning, food purchasing, food prep, and health code compliance. The long term plan would be that you would alternate with the others and take over an event and make it your own. Last update was that Brother Danny Iliscupidez has stepped up and become a “regular” great helper in the prep/cooking part of the kitchen, which we totally appreciate. Chuck is having some physical issues and it is hard for him to do all of this right now. So we still need someone to learn/assist/backup PGK Chuck in the buying of the supplies and getting them to the kitchen. Most are purchases at either Restaurant Depot or Smart and Final, or wherever has the best prices at the time of what we need for the Breakfast/Dinner in question. We also are in desperate need of Knights to help each dinner in Transporting items to and from the Shed. As you can see, the scope and breadth of our activities has gotten way too much for one individual to manage. Please prayerfully consider serving the Knights in this capacity. Ladies Auxiliary News

Knights of Columbus

St. Joseph, Husband of Mary

Council #10442 Ladies Auxiliary

Greetings Ladies!

This has been an OMG!!!! month! Our meeting on November 2nd was full of so many discussions about our projects in the works – Religious Goods sales are great; Bundt Cake sales are organized and should run smoothly; Christmas Party menu was set and tickets sold; Bylaw amendment passed but then tabled with new amendment to be presented in December; Name badges were delivered; Peggy reported on new ladies shirts; Chairlady for “Breakfast with St. Nick” is Jolyn Pinzl. We had a full agenda and didn’t have time for the Pony Derby since the men ended their meeting early and were waiting on us. We will have to schedule a night just for a social gathering again.

The Mini-Bundt Cake sale held on November 17 & 18 was a sell-out after the 10 o’clock Mass. Chairlady Barbara Booth and co-chair Anita Palladino-Durazo did the majority of the organizing and were assisted by co-chair Ann Young as well. This activity has proven to be a great fundraiser. Our Ladies really got behind this sale and turned out to “man” the sale in good numbers. We will be making charitable donation decisions at the December meeting so this could really boost the amounts we can give this year.

The Inspirational Gift Shoppee held on Thanksgiving weekend went off with a bang! Parishioners came pouring in to shop for gifts as well as personal items. There was a much expanded and varied assortment than we have in the past. The layout of the room is proving to be a hit with our patrons as well. All our ladies, with the guidance of Ann and Becki, assisted shoppers with check-out, packaging and fielded many inquiries at the “customer service” table and around the room. This interaction really gives a wonderful

sense of community and connection with our parishioners. As a result, this month proved to be our best sales in all the years we’ve been doing them.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. So now we are moving into Advent. This is a wonderful time of planning, anticipation,

prayer and charity. We will have our year end sale in the St. Joseph Center with the Breakfast with St Nick. We will need all you to help with this parish celebration the Knights host each year. We will be planning our charitable gifts for the season at the meeting on December 6th. Be sure to attend to begin this Advent together in friendship and prayer. Family Prayers/Thoughts of the Month

Advent Examination Edward Hays, A Pilgrim’s Almanac, p. 196 "Advent is the perfect time to clear and prepare the Way. Advent is a winter training camp for those who desire peace. By reflection and prayer, by reading and meditation, we can make our hearts a place where a blessing of peace would desire to abide and where the birth of the Prince of Peace might take place. "Daily we can make an Advent examination. Are there any feelings of discrimination toward race, sex, or religion? Is there a lingering resentment, an unforgiven injury living in our hearts? Do we look down upon others of lesser social standing or educational achievement? Are we generous with the gifts that have been given to us, seeing ourselves as their stewards and not their owners? Are we reverent of others, their ideas and needs, and of creation? These and other questions become Advent lights by which we may search the deep, dark corners of our hearts.”

Blessing of the Advent wreath Reader: The Word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. With hands joined, the leader says: Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ: he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples, he is the wisdom that teaches and guides us, he is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. From Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers

THE MISSION OF THE LAITY

11/1/2018

by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

THE RENEWAL OF THE CHURCH DEPENDS ON CHARITY AND ON OUR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMON GOOD, THE FAMILY AND GROWING IN FAITH

ON OCT. 16, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of St. John Paul II’s election to the See of Peter. It is easy to forget the situation of the Church at the time of his election. Since the publication of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae a decade earlier, the Church had been embroiled in theological controversies. Many in the news media considered the Church out of touch, with a frail, elderly pope no longer able to respond adequately to the daily attacks upon Catholic beliefs. Then, a young, dynamic pope was elected. In his first homily, John Paul II told Catholics, “Do not be afraid!” And to the rest of the world he announced, “Open wide the doors to Christ!” And to show that he would personally open many of these doors, John Paul II traveled to Mexico, Poland

and the United States in the first year of his papacy. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of St. John Paul II’s great apostolic exhortation on the vocation and mission of the laity, Christifideles Laici. Christifideles Laici outlines four principles especially important for us. First, “At this moment, the suffering individual is the way of the Church because that person is, first of all, the way of Christ Himself, who is the Good Samaritan who ‘does not pass by’” (163). Second, the laity has “the specific duty” and “irreplaceable” role “to work towards the Christian animation of the temporal order” by means of the “spiritual and corporal works of mercy” (41). Related to this is the recognition that charity “is never able to be separated from justice,” and that the laity “are never to relinquish their participation in ‘public life’” or their responsibility to promote the common good (42). Third, “The lay faithful’s duty to society primarily begins in marriage and in the family” (40), and the family as a domestic church “is a community in which the relationships are renewed by Christ” (52). As a domestic church, the family shares in the Church’s mission to build up the Kingdom of God through its everyday work that expresses the love between husband and wife and between members of the family. Fourth, the lay faithful should grow and mature in the faith in order “to overcome in themselves the separation of the Gospel from life, to again take up in their daily activities in family, work and society, an integrated approach to life that is fully brought about by the inspiration and strength of the Gospel” (34). St. John Paul II summarized the mission of the laity in these words: “Their responsibility, in particular, is to testify how the Christian faith constitutes the only fully valid response … to the problems and hopes that life poses to every person and society” (34). The spiritual genius of Father Michael McGivney is that he established a way in which Catholic men could fulfill this responsibility by joining together to live the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. Now, with our new Faith in Action program model, the Knights of Columbus will demonstrate his genius in even more effective ways. As we confront the challenges that Catholics face today, we can say of Father McGivney that he was a man ahead of his time, but more appropriately that he was a man just right for our time. Vivat Jesus ! kofc.org
