From the Principal’s Desk . . . It is a prime example of fall in Iowa as I write this! Snow is slowly drifting down onto fallen leaves and there is a bite to the air. Second quarter is under way and we are falling into a definite academic routine. It has been a great year so far! Our Fall Play, Robin Hood and His Merry Men, performs next week and our sports teams have worked their tails off this season. Football s season ended last Friday with a blowout win, volleyball is one win from the state tournament, and Tyler Putney along with Michael Pottebaum qualified for state in Cross Country this Saturday. We continue to seek to develop our professional learning communities within the staff so they can develop good practices of collaboration and evolutionary teaching that responds to the needs of the students in their rooms right now. Our pace has slowed a bit without the weekly professional development we enjoyed last year, but we are still dedicated to this worthwhile practice to improve instruction. We continue to develop our Cura Personalis days with the high school students, helping them gain more soft skillsand life skills for a successful future. We also continue to extend our conversations about vocation and discernment as we seek to not only form the whole person but get them at least familiar with the process of seeking Gods plan in their lives. We are also working more deeply to begin to help develop the unique charism of each of our student leadership groups: LIFE team, student council, and the Father Kuemper Honor Society. We hope that by emphasizing those unique roles we will be better able with the help of students to identify activities and foci that will truly let members shine in a unique way. Even if a student belongs to all three groups! We appreciate your support of school policy as well. We have been much more concerted and unified in the enforcement of our school policies on dress code and technology and your support is quite meaningful and helpful! Just as a reminder in the chain of consequences for using phones without permission during any class time a student s phone may only be picked up by a parent/guardian. We also appreciate your support during this colder time of year that students are choosing school approved sweatshirts, and guys are staying clean- shaven with an appropriate haircut. May God Bless you and your family this month, especially as we draw nearer to the beautiful season of Advent! Christian Service Hours

Last year a service requirement was added to help students experience more depth and diversity in Christian Service and the power and wisdom available in working with others in service organizations. They are required to do at least half their hours with service organizations. The number one go to is your home parish, next is school and others, including secular organizations that help others.

Catholic Charities Catholic Charities is offering a program called “Pathways to Hope and Healing” to Kuemper Students grades 1-12. The Pathways program offers a free mental health assessment (at their office) gathering information from the student and the student’s family member(s), learning “What brought you in?” At the end of the session, recommendations and options are provided. If the student/family decides to continue with services, they can be seen by a licensed mental health professional at Catholic Charities or at Kuemper High School. Junior high and elementary students would be seen at the Catholic Charities office. We accept most private insurances, Medicaid, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), or students/families can utilize our sliding fee scale. Call 792-9597 with any questions or to set up an appointment.

Immunizations Did you know that as your children get older they are at increased risk for some infections? Also, the protection provided by some childhood vaccines begins to wear off. There are four vaccines recommended for preteens and teens. All kids should get a flu vaccine every year, and the three other vaccines should be given starting when kids are 11 to 12 years old. If you have an older teen, it’s not too late to get shots they’ve missed. Your teen may also need a booster of a vaccine that needs more than one dose. You can contact your physician about the shots your child may need, including: 1) Tdap vaccine, which is a booster against tetanus,

diphtheria, and pertussis. Pertussis, or whooping cough, can keep kids out of school and activities for weeks. It can also be spread to babies, which can be very dangerous.

2) Meningococcal vaccine, which protects against meningococcal disease. Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria and is a leading cause of bacterial meningitis (a serious infection around the brain and spinal cord) and its complications.

3) HPV vaccine, which protects against the types of HPV that most commonly cause cervical cancer. HPV vaccine can also help protect against other types of cancer and infections.

4) Influenza (flu) vaccine, because even healthy kids can get the flu, and it can be serious. All kids, including your preteens and teens, should get the flu vaccine every year.
