    Functional Brace

    - designed for a person that has already been injuredthemselves. For example, functional knee braces canbe used for someone that is recovering from aninjury.

    Rehabilitative Brace- help to limit medial to lateral movements, as well as

    helping to limit extension and flexion of the kneejoint after an injury or surgery. Often times thesebraces, although useful, will be larger because theyneed to control / immobilize your leg more.

    Unloalder / offloader Brace- designed to provide relief to people who have

    arthritis in their knees, or improper alignment. Ingeneral, they help to keep proper alignment of thejoint, if one compartment of your knee is starting tohave irregular mechanical alignment. This can be

    called varus or valgus stress.

    Take care when putting the brace on to makesure that the hinges are where the kneebends.

    Straps, tapes or hook-and-loop tapes shouldbe fastened around patients leg.

    Instruct the patient to check the placement

    of the brace during activities to make surethat it hasn't moved. Poorly positioned bracescan hurt rather than the patient.

    Instruct the patient to inspect the braceoften for wear and tear.

    Instruct the patient that regular cleaningwith soap and water is good for the bracefabric.

    Remind the patient that exposed metal should

    be covered to protect others from injury. Instruct the patient that a worn-out braceshould be replaced for maximum benefit.
