Library fun

Explode into reading! We’ve hidden dynamite throughout this issue so be very careful when turning the pages and see if you can find them all.

School’s out which means the annual Summer Reading Club has begun. This year it’s all about adventure and not only do you get to read cool books you can win great prizes. We are giving you five weeks to read five books, however if you want to read 500 that’s fine! Check your local library for more details or jump on our website, register today and read on.

To keep you amused we’ve got lots of games, book and movie

reviews, puzzles and adventure time stuff in this issue. There’s a treasure hunt, a colour-in and lots of ideas for great outdoor activities.

We recently discovered author A.L Tait’s new series The Mapmaker Chronicles. It’s now on our definitely need to read list. Of course we had to find out more about her so check out the interview on page three.

Slap on some sunscreen, don’t forget your hat and get out and be adventurous outdoors this summer… and don’t forget to take a book.

Don’t forget to check the library website for all the fun things we have planned this summer. Lots of new books too!

Author of the exciting new series The Mapmaker Chronicles.

Where do your ideas come from?

The idea for The Mapmaker Chronicles came from two conversations I had with my oldest son (now 10) over a few days. In the first, we were staring out at the night sky and he asked me how far it went – the kind of question that really makes a mum’s head hurt! In the second conversation, we were reading a Horrible Histories book and talking about explorers. He asked me how they mapped the world, because he knows I really like maps. I answered: ‘They had to get in their ships and go out there.’ And I was struck by inspiration - ‘They would have felt,’ I went on, ‘exactly how we felt when we were looking at the stars. They had no idea how far it was, what was out there, or whether they’d sail off the edge.’ And in that moment, I had the idea for the series.

Who inspired your main character?

Quinn is the boy who really would much rather have stayed home, and who finds, over the journey, strengths in himself that he never imagined he possessed. I guess some of him comes from my two boys, but he’s mostly just Quinn. As soon as I had the idea for the series, Quinn appeared.

How did you learn all about maps?

I love maps, particularly old ones. I love the little drawings on them, and I love the fact that every line on them builds on our knowledge of the world. I have lots of books about maps and I like to go to exhibitions to look at them when I can.

Do you prefer paper maps or google maps?

Definitely paper, though there is a lot to be said for technology when you just want to get from A to B.

Have you travelled the world?

I have been to lots of places in the world – but I always want to travel to more.

Where is your favourite place to write?

I’m a bit like Quinn in some ways – my favourite place in the world is home. I write my best words at home, surrounded by drawings my boys have done for me, and with a world map blotter under my keyboard.

Mapmaker Chronicles is available now from Hachette Australia Children’s Books

Meet A.L. Tait Summer Reading ClubSo much to do over the summer holidays. If you say you are bored you are getting it all wrong!

Are we there yet?Going on a holiday but dreading the journey? Instead of tuning out with a DVD or your music why not challenge your family to some road trip games this summer.

Geogralphabet

Start by naming any place in the world (beginning with A) taking turns, players must then think of a place-name that begins with the last letter of the previous place chosen. They can be towns, cities, even continents of the world! e.g. Australia = Alexandra Headland = Denmark = Kenilworth = ?

Quick Calculations

Practice your maths with this one. Each time you see a number plate, try adding all of the numbers together. First person to call out the correct answer wins.

Tuneless

One person hums the tune to a television show or movie. e.g.: The Simpsons. The first person to guess the show, gets to hum their choice next. Way more fun than your iPod!

Make an adventure map

Step one In one corner of the brown paper, use a ruler to draw a box for the map key. This is the instructions of what all the pictures or symbols you will draw on the map actually mean.

Step twoIn another corner, use a compass or jar lid to draw a circle for the compass. You can add four points labelled with ‘N’, ‘S’, ‘E’, and ‘W’ in the correct places.

Step threeDraw your map shape. You can use a real map to get the shape of yours right or you can draw a map of your own backyard, house, beach, neighbourhood or a far distant treasure island.

Step fourOn a scrap of paper, design symbols for the map. You’ll definitely want to include a

starting place, a treasure spot, and a path. You can add other symbols for clues, including mountains, trees, lakes, rivers, swamps, rocks, traps and even dangerous creatures.

Step fiveDraw the path and symbols on the map in pencil first. The starting place should be at one edge of the map outline. Don’t forget to add them in the map key.

Step sixAdd decorations to the area of the map, you might also like to decorate the map compass to look like a sun or crossed bones.

Step sevenUse the markers to trace all the pencil lines and add colour.

Step eightCrinkle paper and tear edges slightly to make map look old.

Your materials

• Brown, white or yellow paper

• Scrap paper

• Pencils

• Coloured markers

• Ruler.

The ScavengersBy Michael Perry

When the world started to fall apart, the government gave everyone two choices: move into the Bubble Cities or take their chances outside. Twelve year-old Maggie and her family chose the latter. They live in the world that was left behind.

Deciding it’s time to grow up and grow tough, Maggie renames herself Ford Falcon— a name taken from the beat-up car she finds at a nearby junkyard. This is where Ford’s family goes to scavenge for things they can use and barter with. Thus far, they have been able to survive this brave new world by working together. But when Ford returns one day to discover her home ransacked and her family missing, she must find the strength to survive on her own and rescue her loved ones.

The Scavengers is the perfect mix of humour and heart in a world where one person’s junk is another person’s key to survival.

The Name at the End of the LadderBy Elena de Roo

Win the game to choose your name and free the players who remain. Twelve year-old September is determined to choose an adventurous name for herself from the Name Bank – not like all her friends, who are named after flowers or trees. Soon she discovers that she has no choice, unless she wins an ancient and mysterious board game. And every roll of the dice leads her further into danger.

The Name at the End of the Ladder is a great read for those who like puzzles, tricky games and a race against time.

Emma and the Blue GenieBy Cornelia Funke

One night, Emma finds a mysterious green bottle floating in the ocean. When she pulls out the stopper, she sets a blue genie free! Most genies grant three wishes, but Karim can’t grant even one anymore. A yellow genie stole his magic nose ring, leaving him small, powerless, and trapped in that bottle. Emma and her noodle-tailed dog have to help Karim get his nose ring—and his magic—back! Emma and the Blue Genie is a great book for anyone who loves fairy tales.

Author: Michael Gerard Butler

Book: Just a Dog

Characters:

• Mister Mosely: a loyal, protective and loving family dog.

• Corey: Mister Moseley’s best friend.

• Corey’s Mum and Dad: Even through hard times, find a way to sort things out with the help of Mister Mosely.

• Amelia: Corey’s younger sister who plays dress ups with Mister Mosely.

• Uncle Gavin: Gave Corey’s family Mister Mosely.

What happens: Mister Mosely is ‘just a dog’, he was the heart of the Ingram family and he was always there to help. As the years passed, many memorable stories were made. However, Mister Mosely was getting old! He had cancer in his bones, he takes medication but can it save him? And if it doesn’t, what will happen to the Ingram family?

If you could play a character in this book, it would be: Mister Mosely! He is a brilliant listener and he always helps when people need him.

Book: Zac’s Ultimate Mission

Characters:

• Zac Power: 12 year old spy.

• Leon: Zac’s older brother who’s good with technology.

• Agent Bum Smack: their mum.

• Agent Tool Belt: their dad.

What happened: All of the Government Investigation Bureau’s enemies are planning to destroy the world by causing a comet to crash into the Earth. Zac only has 24 hours to save the world!

Favourite part: if I told you, it would ruin the ending!

If you could play a character in this book, it would be: Mr Shadow as he’s my favourite character.

Love this? There are even more Zac Power series to read. Space Camp, Mega Mission, Test Drive, Extreme Mission and Spy Camp. ED.

Gisele (aged 9)

Author: Lemony Snicket

Book: The Bad Beginning

Characters:

• Klaus: very smart and reads lots of books.

• Violet: thinks of adventures and loves to skip rocks.

• Sunny: a baby that loves chewing things.

What happens: They were at the beach one morning when a weird man walks past and tells them that their house has burnt down and their parents have died in the fire. Then they stay at the weird man’s house until they find a place to live.

Favourite part: The beginning, because you get pretty frightened because you don’t know what is going to happen to the poor kids.

If you could play a character in this book, it would be: Sunny because she is a baby and she doesn’t know what is happening so she doesn’t know that her parents died, so she is not sad.

Did you know: there are twelve more books in the series! ED.

Get outsideGet outside it’s summer. Here’s some of the best outdoor games to keep you out of the house and having fun.

Play Hopscotch Grab some chalk and draw any kind of hopscotch court. The aim of the game is to hop up the court and back again making sure to hop in each space using one leg only. Each player has a go until someone makes a mistake like stepping on the line, putting both feet down or losing balance. Give it a go!

Hula hoop freeze tag • Scatter out several hula

hoops around the play area.

• Assign taggers to freeze the other players.

• Players inside a hula hoop cannot get frozen, but can only stay long enough to count to 10.

• Only one player per hula hoop is allowed.

Build an obstacle courseYou can use just about anything to create a fun obstacle course in the backyard: hula hoops, tyres, ladders, pool noodles, string, rope, buckets, cones, boards… you name it! Once you’ve built your masterpiece, grab a stopwatch and see how fast you can make your way through it.

Tug of war • Draw a line in the dirt or

field and get a rope.

• Number off the same amount on each side of the rope.

• The first team that gets the other team across their side of the line wins.

Once you are worn out from all the games why not grab a good book, find a shady tree then read and relax.
