    Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Well, 2011 promises to be aninteresting year! At the time of this writing, our new governor has proposed eliminatingthe Kansas Arts Commission as a state

agency and changing its status to a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization. As you are probablyaware, KMTA receives grant money from theKAC each year, as do many of the other artsorganizations across the state. Funding cutsthis past year have affectedmany community arts projectsaround the state, and achange in the KAC’s statuscould cause an even biggerdrop in support for the arts. So, what are we to do? First

of all, we must not simply hangour heads in defeat. No matterhow our state legislature voteson the proposed budget, ourorganization will go on. On theother hand, we are notrequired to allow this to go through withoutgiving input. The beauty of our wonderfulcountry is that we are allowed to voice ouropinions openly, to present facts and feelingsin public and to work to influence those inleadership.

If, by the time you receive thisnewsletter, the legislature has not yet votedon the budget, I encourage you to use yourfreedom to voice your opinion passionately(but always respectfully) to your statesenators and state representatives. If we arenot willing to stand up for the arts in Kansas, who will? Please realize that our legislatorsface the daunting task of trying to keep ourstate running; because the state faces realfinancial challenges, the legislature willprobably have to make spending cuts

somewhere. We can respect the difficulty ofthe decisions they face, even while trying to

influence them to continue supporting the artsin a tangible way.

If, on the other hand, the Kansas StateLegislature has voted and approved GovernorBrownback’s proposed budget, know thatKMTA will be working to continue our

programs. We may need to seek other sourcesof funding, or we may need to work to trim ourown budget, but we will carry on in pursuit ofour mission. In case you haven’t read it lately, here is our mission: “Kansas Music Teachers

Association is dedicated tohelping each student experiencethe joy of music. Through itseducational programs andactivities, this organization willempower its members--teachers with high professional

standards-- to foster in studentsa lifelong commitment to musicas patrons, performers, teachers, and hobbyists.”KMTA will also work inpartnership with communities

across Kansas to insure that music is anongoing, vital part of the cultural life.

Thank you for being a part of theKansas Music Teachers Association. As youperuse the remainder of this issue of the KMTAUpdate, you will see that we had very

successful fall auditions, and there will beexciting Music Progressions events across thestate throughout the spring. The KMTA StateConference for 2011 will be at Emporia StateUniversity, located between Kansas City andWichita on I-35. It will be a great opportunityfor us to gather again to learn, hear greatmusic, and fellowship with other musicteachers from around the state. I look forwardto seeing you June 10-11 at Emporia!

    Workshop Sessions

9:00 – 9:50 a.m.: Improvising is for Everyone (a master class providing step-by-step tools):A jazz chamber master class where Sowash will work with pre-college student musicians. Learn to usethe basic theory and music reading you already teach as a foundation for teaching students to improvise.Improvisation and reading music should both be taught to all music students, because students who readwell and play by ear can perform a wider range of styles and are more engaged. Additionally, theapplied music theory inherent in improvisation leads to a deeper interpretation of written music andopens the door to greater self-expression. Teachers seeking to balance their current emphasis on readingmusic with improvisation will leave this session with many practical tips that will open the door into thefascinating world of playing by ear.

10:00 – 10:50 a.m.: That’s Jazz! Incorporating Jazz into the Traditional Lesson: Bradley Sowash brings new publications to enliven your students’ interest, helping your best readers get“out” of the music, and helping those who tend to play by ear get motivated to read music with ease.

12:30 – 1:30 p.m.: KMTA Honors Recital:An annual attraction is a lunchtime recital featuring student winners of the MTNA and KMTA FallHonors Auditions held in November 2010. Grades 2 through university level will be featured on piano, woodwinds, brass, and strings.

2:45 – 3:45 p.m.: Now What? Going Further with Lead Sheets:So you can already play the melody and chord symbols on lead sheets... now what? Learn how topersonalize your interpretation of lead sheets found in fake books. Lead sheets offer a compromisebetween playing totally “off the top of one's head” and reading every note one plays. This session offerspractical tips for interpreting lead sheets through demonstration and written examples.

    The Power of One

You are asking your colleagues, What is the Power of One? It was established for creating public awareness of musicstudy benefits, which in turn invites you to honor one who impacted your music study, (e.g., teacher, co-worker, KMTA

member, clinician, composer), it challenges and helps you to make the same kind of impact on others.

"Honor a special person and make your own impact on music study by mailing in the form below. The person honoredwill be entered in our Book of Remembrance for display at State Conferences.

A few final corrections of the testing materials (Sets 1 and 2) have been completed and those materialshave been distributed to all the KMTA chapters who hold Music Progressions events, as well as to theWashington State Music Teachers Association. Re-recorded Listening CDs for Sets 1 and 2 have alsobeen sent to all of the chapters.

The Washington State association has, additionally, purchased and received our Sight ReadingMaterials for Set 1.  They are pleased with all of the materials they have received, and have already heldone event, which they call a Musicianship Festival.

The North Idaho Music Teachers Association chapter saw our materials through the Washington stateevents, and has now purchased and received CDs with the testing materials and the listening tests forSet 1.  It has been such a delight and privilege to get to communicate with these teachers and hear howmuch they appreciate all the work that has gone into the development of the Kansas materials!

Now that all of the Kansas chapters have received corrected materials, and the materials and listening testsare all burned onto CDs for future distribution, the job of future KMTA Music Progressions Chairs will

mainly be one of communication, and will be much simpler than these past years of development.

I look forward to passing my baton to a KMTA colleague who shares the same excitement and sense ofaccomplishment that comes from enabling the success of Music Progressions in the lives of our students! Ifyou accept the baton, I promise you will have plenty of time left over to enjoy the fruit of your labor!

For the joy of Music Progressions,Sally Buxton, NCTMKMTA Music Progressions Chair
