The Eden Alternative - It Can Be Different
Happy Summer!! Here is a little tidbit of information on our next Principle to read
while you enjoy this beautiful weather!
The Eden Alternative Principle #7
Medical treatment should be the servant of genuine human caring, never its master.
In Eden homes, we recognize that all people are creative, resourceful and whole. In order for
people to live their best life, there must be a holistic view of well being. Emotional, spiritual, and
intellectual health, as well as relationships, support and are supported by physical health. By
deeply knowing the whole person, as discussed in Principle #3, we can honour Principle #7.
When we know each other well and place genuine human caring ahead of treatment, the Elder's
needs become the center of our processes and practices.
Residents daily life does not, or should not, revolve around treatment and medication schedules.
Instead it should focus on fun, living life, spontaneity, growth and friendships. This is where
pets, plants and children can enhance health outcomes!
Some ways we can practice Principle #7 in our homes is to continue to replace Institutional
language with more community friendly language; help staff understand the difference between
"care" and "treatment"; and to remove traditional nurses stations from the homes!! Our homes
have many examples of how we are demonstrating Principle #7 but there are still things we can
do to improve on it. We have to set aside preconceived notions about the capacity of an Elder to
express their desires. When we are open to really hearing and sensing their needs we can respond
to those unmet needs before we add medications and treatments.
Always remember to put the person first and the disease or different ability second.
This opens the door to all kinds of new ways to provide medical services while
focusing on the wholeness of the entire person.
In Loving Memory

NIGEL is Not Permitted to Enter
Nigel has been the topic of many discussions over the past number of years and here we are again
discussing this neighbourhood cat.
A decision has been made, as per many requests from the residents...NOT TO ALLOW NIGEL IN THE
BUILDING.
We, along with the residents ask for your cooperation, in this matter. We have Tabby and Mittens for
our residents to enjoy and Nigel does not belong to us.
His owners have been frustrated over the years as well, as he does not come home and they have to
come looking for him. They have asked us not to feed him, yet he still has food provided to him here at
Kennebec. He has been spotted ‘spraying’ in the dining room and sitting up in the chairs at meal time.
He has been on the new furniture out front and scratching it and this bothers the residents who are so
proud of this area.
Moving forward, if you want to visit with Nigel, please do so outside. Do not allow him in between the
glass doors and DO NOT FEED HIM. He has a home and he will go there if we stop providing meals
SCENT REDUCED
Just a reminder our homes are SCENT REDUCED homes. Please be careful not to
bring in scented products, fragrant flowers or plants, heavy perfumes, etc.
Thank you for your help in keeping our air clean!
Safety Share Point
Safety Share Point - please take note that due to the humid weather we will be
experiencing, be cautious of slippery floors. HIGH HUMIDITY=SLIPPERY FLOORS.
Neighbourhood Team Building
All three of Kennebec's Neighbourhoods have resumed their Neighbourhood Guide Team
Building Meetings and are on their way to completing more modules!
Team Guides are Ken Herrell - Millidgeville
Darlene Sabean - Westfield
Gillian Miller - Grand Bay
Teams are planning some fun social events for their Neighbourhoods during the summer and
doing some fundraising too! Watch for ticket sales, bake sales, and more!

The Adult Venture Camp is located on beautiful Grand Lake and is supported by
Rotary Clubs around the province, including the Rotary Club of Rothesay Kings. Recently, thru the support of Easter Seals, Phyllis Morgan and Shirley Hanson spent a week at the camp thoroughly enjoying themselves, and having the time of their lives. They had campfires, roasted hotdogs and marshmallows, went canoeing, had sing-a-longs and much more. One of the best things was making new friends who they hope to see next year. Also, a big thank you to Gillian Miller and Ken Herrell for ensuring the ladies got to camp and back.

MUSIC THERAPYMUSIC THERAPYMUSIC THERAPYMUSIC THERAPY
If you have any ipods kicking around the house that are not being used perhaps you would be
interested in donating them to Kennebec Manor. Our residents get such joy out of listening
to music. By listening to familiar songs, residents with dementia are able to unlock certain
memories and thoughts they may not have had in a very long time. The smiles and
hearing them sing to their favourite songs is amazing!!
New Phone & Room Numbering System
You may have noticed some work being done in our home. We are in the process of replacing our Nurse Call and phone system. With this new system personal phone lines will now be arranged through the home and no longer through Bell Aliant. The resident's room numbers will all be updated and these numbers will be their phone extensions. With the new posted room numbers each resident will also have a picture frame outside their door. We ask families to please bring in a photo that they and their loved one would like displayed. This can be a new photo or one from years past. Please bring photos to front
office and Lynda will make a copy of the original.
Minivan for Residents’ Use We are pleased to be able to offer a minivan, purchased for our homes, as a transportation choice for our residents. Starting July 1st, 2016 families will be
able to utilize the van in the greater Saint John area to transport their loved ones for a flat rate of $20 upon booking. The van will be at Kings Way Care Centre the first day of the month to the 15th and at Kennebec Manor from the 16th to the end of the month. To book please contact: Kings Way Care Centre Betty 847-1131 ext 1101 Kennebec Manor Lynda 632-9628 ext 101

Pastor’s Corner
God gives us smiles to be like warming sunshine to others; and praise to be like refreshing rain. When we smile, we bring joy and lift up heavy hearts; and when we give words of praise, we rain down blessings on others. We have no control over the weather, but we do have the power to bless others with our own brand of sunshine
and rain. “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart.” (Proverbs 15:30)
