July was an eventful month around KMA. On July 11th the Shlichot Tzibbur Steering Committee presented

its findings and recommendation to the executive board. On July 15th a congregational meeting resulted

in the following policy being adapted by KMA.

“Shlichei tzibbur duties will be carried out without regard to gender for all at every KMA prayer

service. However, members will have the option of having an alternative service in the shul, in a

room other than the main sanctuary. Great efforts will be made to send out information two

weeks in advance about who is davening, based on a roster of shlicehi tzibbur, to allow members

to plan Shabbat attendance. On a Bar/Bat mitzvah or aufruf, the celebrating family may request

specific shlichei tsibur. For lesser smachot, the celebrating family may choose the baal shacharit

or baal musaf, but not both.”

Additionally, we said adieu to Rav Barry and his family as they embark on a yearlong sabbatical to

Teaneck, NJ. We will miss them and wish them a successful, fulfilling year abroad. We are very grateful

for the guidance and friendship he has given us over the last nine years.

In conjunction with Rav Barry’s departure we welcome Chava LeVine, the new office administrator. When

you are in the office, please stop by and make her feel welcome.

"I've always felt very deeply that the synagogue was like my family," says Jac. "It was relatively

small then."Moreshet Avraham became a focal point for the Masorti movement and Masorti

Judaism in the southeastern part of Jerusalem," said Diane. "And we feel strongly now that this

should continue."

While Moreshet Avraham is in a transition stage with a number of issues facing it, Jac feels he

would like the future to be "one where there are strong feelings of community, which we've

had since the synagogue was formed, which are maintained by virtue of everyone feeling

shalom bayit is the supreme value. Everyone will have to compromise on the given issues

which otherwise will divide us fatally." Diane adds: "Jac and I have lived our whole lives and

raised our children to be tolerant of many different points of view and different kinds of

people. The synagogue as a kehillah should be able to be inclusive not exclusive."

Photograph by Barry A. Kaplan In 1977-78 the Wurtman family (Enid, Stuart, Elie, and Carmi) came to Israel for a year

from Philadelphia. In 1979, they returned on aliyah. Daughter Aliza was born here in 1981.

Son, Elie, grew up in Jerusalem, and then returned to the States to do the Columbia

University-Jewish Theological Seminary joint program from which he graduated with

degrees in Political Science and Talmud.

Returning to Israel, he went into the Israeli army and became liaison officer to international

organizations in the West Bank and deputy commander at the Allenby Bridge. In early 1997

he met Naomi Bloom at a Shabbat meal.

Naomi was born and grew up in Roslyn, Long Island, New York, in a very strong

Conservative synagogue where she was active in USY in high school. She came to Israel

with the USY pilgrimage, spent 1991-92 on the Nativ year program, came to Israel several

summers and during her junior year to Hebrew University, and made aliyah in 1996. She

had graduated the Barnard-Jewish Theological Seminary joint program with degrees in

anthropology and Jewish history, respectively.

Although she was "pretty fluent in Hebrew," she went to Ulpan Etzion then went to Tel Aviv

University graduate school where she received a Master's degree in organizational behavior.

Naomi and Elie were married in 2000 and in 2002 joined Moreshet Avraham where Elie's

parents belonged.

Today, Naomi 36 years old and Elie, 40 years old, have just celebrated their 10th wedding

anniversary and have three children: Sammy, 9; Odelia, 7½ ; and Liam, 4½.

Elie has been involved in high tech for the past 16 years and currently is partner in a

venture capital firm, Benchmark Capital. Naomi is a freelance writer for the Joint

Distribution Committee, mainly writing about programs in Israel.

When they initially joined Moreshet Avraham, Naomi says they were "very active in youth

activities and young families." Elie was on the board two years as well as on the board of

Machon Schechter. Naomi has been involved with the Chesed Committee, specifically the

birth and baby subdivision. She is also involved with the women's tfillah initiative.

Says Naomi, "Ideologically, Moreshet Avraham is what we want in a Conservative

synagogue."

Elie admits he doesn't come very often because he is out of town a lot. "Many of my friends

pray elsewhere at other synagogues around the city. I think my social basis happens to be

more traditional, and that's just the reality of Jerusalem." Elie says he does come to

programs which both he and Naomi like and he comes for holidays.

more young families join the synagogue, and I would like to see the synagogue offer vibrant
