Day by Day Itinerary

Sun., Sept. 27 – HARTFORD/EN ROUTE Today we depart Hartford on the beginning of our Alpine Oktoberfest Holiday to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Here we depart on the overnight transatlantic flight to Europe. (I)

Mon., Sept. 28 – SEEFELD We arrive in Munich, Germany today where we are met by our Tour Escort, who will accompany us on our Alpine Oktoberfest Holiday. From here, we continue by motor coach into the Bavarian Alps and across the Austrian border to the village of Seefeld, a virtual alpine wonder-land. Dinner is included this evening at our hotel. (I,D)

Tues., Sept. 29 – SEEFELD (Salzburg) Our sightseeing begins with a day trip through the fabulous alpine scenery to magical Salzburg – Mozart’s birthplace and setting for the film “The Sound of Music”. We’ll begin at the baroque Hellbrunn Palace, where we see the famous Gazebo from “The Sound of Music”. Next, we enjoy a sightseeing tour of Salzburg that will start on the right bank of the Salzach River where we’ll see the grounds of Mirabell Palace and the Mozart Conservatoire, before crossing over into the Old Town. Here we’ll see the 15th century Altes Rathaus and take in the sites along the romantic Getreidgasse, where we’ll also find Mozart’s birthplace, now a museum. We’ll also see the Collegiate Church and the Franciscan Church as we make our way to the Residence Square, home to the medi-eval bishops’ residence. Nearby we’ll visit Salzburg Cathedral and then pass St. Peter’s Abbey, seen so frequently in “The Sound of Music”. After time at leisure in Salzburg we return to Seefeld. (B,D)

Wed., Sept. 30 – SEEFELD Today is free to enjoy Seefeld and the amazing scenery. Perhaps to enjoy a chairlift ride into the surrounding mountains or to browse the wonderful boutiques. Or if you prefer, an optional tour will be made available into the heart of the Bavarian Alps. Our Fairytale Bavaria Excursion will take you to Linderhof Palace for a guided visit. This palace, set in a forest in the midst of the Ammergau Mountains, is perhaps the most interesting of the castles built towards the end of the 19th century by “Mad” King Ludwig II of Bavaria. You will also visit the Passion Play village of Oberammergau where we will see the skilled craftsman at work creating there fabulous woodcarvings. You will also have a chance to purchase beautiful woodcarvings made by local craftsmen. (B)

Thurs., Oct. 1 – SEEFELD (Munich Oktoberfest) Today we visit Munich the capital city of Bavaria and the heart of artistic Germany. Cheerful and vivacious, boast-ing magnificent architecture from Bavaria’s royal past and we’ll experience it all. We begin with a visit to the Marienplatz and witness the chiming of the “Glockenspiel” displaying a medieval tournament and dance. Next we take a driving tour of the city that will feature the Residenz, the former Bavarian Royal Palace, the National Theatre, the Karolinenplatz with the Obelisk, the Köningsplatz surrounded by interesting classical buildings, and everywhere catch glimpses of the bulbous

green domes topping the sturdy twin towers of the Frauenkirche, Munich’s Cathedral. This afternoon, we visit the world famous Oktoberfest that is celebrated at the “Wies’n” Fair Grounds. Ten huge festival tents of the seven Munich breweries welcome the visitors…and the lively brass bands add to the overwhelmingly happy sounds of this world-famous festival. In the late afternoon we return to Seefeld. (B)

Fri., Oct. 2 – SEEFELD Today is free to explore the village of the Seefeld. Few resorts can match Seefeld’s unique combination of traditional charm and modern amenities; browse the de-lightful shops in search of that perfect gift, relax with quiet meadow and mountain walks, or a horse-drawn carriage ride. Or if you prefer, take part in the optional excursion to Berchtesgaden and Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. One of Europe’s most beautiful regions, we visit the village of Berchtesgaden before continuing to the base of Mt. Kehlstein. Here we board a special postal bus for a trip up serpent-like Kehlsteinstraße, one of the most magnificent mountain roads in the world. Then we will travel by elevator through the mountain to arrive at Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler's, Eagle’s Nest as named by the Allied Forces. Enjoy the magnificent views of the surrounding Alps before we make our return to Seefeld. (B)

Sat., Oct. 3 – SEEFELD (Almabtrieb Excursion) Today we are in for a special treat when we travel to the Almabtrieb. Summer is over, the days are getting shorter and the nights are turning rather chilly, high time for the herdsmen to drive their cattle from the pasture to the valley. Adorned with varicolored ribbons, wreaths, brushwood coronets and mirrors, the colorful parade begins the often dangerous descent into the valley. The herdsmen and countrywomen have also donned their traditional costume for the joyous arrival in the valley and we’ll join in the folklore fun that accompanies this time honored tradition. (B)
