DECEMBER REPORT TO THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMITTEE ON ATHLETICS

MEN'S BASKETBALL Head Coach: Fran Mccaffery Season Record: 6-2 Overall (0-0 B1G) Next Event: Friday at #4/5 Michigan - 5:30 p.m. Notables: Iowa won its second straight Big Ten/ACC Challenge contest Tuesday night, winning 68-54 at Syracuse in its first-ever visit to the Carrier Dome. Iowa is on the middle of a stretch playing eight of 10 games away from Iowa City. The Hawkeyes will play only two home games during the month of December.

Last week, the Hawkeyes knocked-off No. 12 Texas Tech (72-61) finishing runners-up at the Las Vegas Invitational. Luka Garza and CJ Fredrick were named to the all-tournament team.

Garza is one of just two players nationally to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He leads the Big Ten in scoring and is third in rebounding. Garza is 21 points from reaching career point No. 1,000.

Iowa's two losses this season have come to DePaul and San Diego State, who are a combined 16-0 to start the season.

Starting forward Jack Nunge suffered a season-ending knee injury on Nov. 24, while reserve forward Patrick Mccaffery has missed the last six games due to health and wellness.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Head Coach: Lisa Bluder Season Record: 5-2 Overall (0-0 B1G) Next Event: Dec. 11 at Iowa State - 7 p.m. - Iowa Corn Cy­Hawk Series Notables: Iowa is 5-2 on the season with wins over Florida Atlantic, North Alabama, Princeton, Cincinnati, and Towson.

Senior guard Makenzie Meyer is leading the Hawkeyes in points per game (15.4), closely followed by senior Kathleen Doyle (14.9). Sophomore Monika Czinano is also averaging double figures (13.0). Senior Amanda Ollinger leads the Hawkeyes in rebounds, averaging 7.3 per game. Ollinger recorded a career-high 13 rebounds against Princeton on Nov. 20. Czinano is leading the Hawkeyes in shooting percentage (.745). Doyle was named to the Big Ten Women's Basketball Player of the Week Honor Roll on Nov. 25.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Head Coach: Randy Hasenbank Notables: Senior Nathan Mylenek was the top Hawkeye finisher for 11 straight races. A two-time All-Region honoree, Mylenek earned an automatic berth to NCAA Championships for the second consective year. He placed 85th at the national race.

The Hawkeye men placed seventh out of 27 teams with 184 points at the NCAA Regional.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Head Coach: Randy Hasenbank Notables: Freshman Leah Kralovetz Leah Kralovetz placed 16th at the NCAA Regional meet, earning All-Region honors. She is the first freshman female since 2011 to earn it.

The Hawkeye women placed 10th out of 33 teams with 283 points at the NCAA Regional.

FIELD HOCKEY Head Coach: Lisa Cellucci Season Record: 17-5 Overall (7-1 BlG) Notables: The Hawkeyes took home the B1G Regular Season Championship with co-champion Maryland after defeating Michigan on Nov. 3. In the B1G Tournament, the Hawkeyes defeated Ohio State (4-1), Northwestern (2-1), and advanced to the tournament championship. There, the Hawkeyes took the crown with a 1-0 overtime victory against Penn State. This win marked the first time in Iowa history that the Hawkeyes brought home the regular season title and tournament title in the same year. This team is only the fifth in B1G history to do the same.

Junior Maddy Murphy tallied five assists and scored the winning goal against Penn State, while sophomore Ciara Smith posted three goals and two assists in the postseason. Other impactful performances came from sophomore Leah Zellner (1G, 2Ast), sophomore Lokke Stribos (2G, 1Ast), and Ellie Holley {2Ast).

FOOTBALL Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz Season Record: 9-3 Overall (6-3 BlG} Next Event: Bowl Announcement, Sunday, Dec. 8 Notables: Iowa concluded the regular season on a three­game winning streak and an overall record of 9-3. Following a last-minute, 24-22 loss at Wisconsin, the Hawkeyes completed November with three straight wins, including a 23-19 victory over #7 Minnesota, handing the Gophers their first loss of the season while maintaining Floyd of Rosedale for a fifth straight year.

Iowa's final two victories included a win over Illinois on Senior Day, and a 27-24 win at Nebraska to maintain a hold on the Heroes Trophy. Junior kicker Keith Duncan provided the winning margin at Nebraska with a 48-yard field goal with one second remaining.

Duncan this season has established Iowa and Big Ten Conference records with 29 field goals (34 attempts}. He also set Iowa records for field goal attempts in a game (six) and season (34). He is one of three finalists for the Lou Graza Award, signifying the top kicker in the nation. Duncan was also named the Big Ten's Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year.

In addition, junior offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs has been named the Rimington-Pace Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year. Duncan, Wirfs, and junior defensive end A.J. Epenesa all have earned first-team All-Big Ten honors.

Iowa has won 47 games over the past five seasons. With the win at Nebraska, Coach Kirk Ferentz earned his 97th win in Big Ten games, moving ahead of former Iowa coach Hayden Fry into fourth place on the all-time Big Ten list.

SOCCER Head Coach: Dave Dilanni Season Record: 15-5-1 Overall (7-3-1 BlG) Notables: Iowa earned the second NCAA Tournament berth in school history in 2019, where it fell, 1-0, to No. 3 seed Kansas in the Round of 64. The Hawkeyes finished the season with a 15-5-1 overall record with the 15 victories tying the single-season school record.

Senior Natalie Winters capped her career by earning United Soccer Coaches second-team All-North Region honors. It was the second straight year she earned all­region selection, making her the fourth student-athlete in program history to earn two or more all-region distinctions.

Seniors Kaleigh Haus and Hannah Druklec were named CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District 6 selections, advancing them to the Academic All-America ballot.

MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Head Coach: Marc Long Season Record: 2-2 Overall (2-2 BlG} Next Event: at USA Diving Winter National Championships -Minneapolis, Minn. Notables: The Hawkeyes are currently participating in the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. against top-5 competition (Texas, Cal-Berkeley) for their midseason invitational. The last time out, Iowa dropped its duals against No. 1 Michigan (82-218} and No. 3 Indiana (55-245).

WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Head Coach: Marc Long Season Record: 3-2 Overall (2-2 BlG} Next Event: Friday at Iowa State - 6 p.m. - Iowa Corn Cy­Hawk Series Notables: Iowa is currently participating in the Minnesota Invitational against top-5 competition (Texas, Cal-Berkeley) for its midseason invitational.

The Hawkeyes won their third dual of the season, downing Rutgers, 199-100, on Nov. 8 in Iowa City. Iowa dominated the action, winning 13 of 16 events.

Junior diver Jayah Mathews earned back-to-back Big Ten Diver of the Week honors on Nov. 6 and Nov. 13. She had a win and third place finish in a dual against Michigan before sweeping the springboard competition in the dual against Rutgers.

Next up is the coveted Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series against Iowa State, where Iowa holds a seven-year win streak dating back to 2010. Iowa leads the overall rivalry 8-2.

MEN'S TENNIS Head Coach: Ross Wilson Next Event: Jan. 16 vs. Texas Tech - Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex - Iowa City, Iowa Notables: Redshirt senior Kareem Allaf's No. 60 national ranking is the of his career. He enters this spring tied for third in all-time singles wins in school history. He is also tied for sixth all-time in combined wins in program history. Allaf advanced to the Consolation Quarterfinals at the ITAs, knocked off two ranked opponents during his run.

The doubles team of junior Will Davies and sophomore Oliver Okonkwo is ranked 16th in the nation. That is the highest ranking in school history since the doubles team of Ramel/Agiurre (No. 25-1989}. Davies/Okonkwo is also the third highest ranked doubles team in the Big Ten. The duo advanced to the Consolation Semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships, and dropped the highest ranked team in program history, defeating Columbia's 4th ranked tandem in the country in straight sets.

Junior Morgan Lohan won the Navy/Gold Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland.

VOLLEYBALL Head Coach: Vicki Brown Season Record: 10-21 Overall (4-16 B1G) Notables: Junior Halle Johnston finished second in the Big Ten in 2019 in total digs and digs per set. Johnston added 517 digs along with a 4.58 digs per set to hold second overall on the Big Ten's leaderboard. She is the third consecutive Hawkeye to finish top two in the conference in both statistical categories, joining Annika Olsen (2017) and Molly Kelly {2018).

Sophomore Amiya Jones set a career-high with seven aces, including three consecutive, and a career-high 15 kills in a five-set victory over Indiana. Seven aces are the most in the Big Ten this season and seventh in the NCAA.

Freshman Blythe Rients totaled 11 blocks against Indiana on Oct. 20 to tie her for sixth in Iowa single-match history. 11 Blocks are tied for the most in the Big Ten this season and most by a Hawkeye since Sept. 2, 2011.

Sophomore Courtney Buzzerio notched her first career triple double at Nebraska on Nov. 9 with 18 kills, 20 assists, and 10 digs. Buzzerio is the first Hawkeye accomplish the feat since 2005 and third since 2000.

Junior Brie Orr registered her 3,000th career assist at Penn State on Oct. 5. Orr is the seventh player in program history to eclipse 3,000 career assists.

WRESTLING Head Coach: Tom Brands Season Record: 3-1 Overall (1-0 B1G) Next Event: Sunday at Princeton - 1 p.m. Notables: Iowa is ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time since February 2015. Juniors Spencer Lee and Austin Desanto are both ranked No. 1 in the country at their respective weights. All 10 Hawkeyes are ranked in the top 10. Desanto was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 3 after upsetting the then-No. 1 ranked wrestler on Dec. 1.

Iowa beat No. 6 Wisconsin on Dec. 1, 32-3. It was the 100th Big Ten Conference dual win for head coach Tom Brands. Iowa defeated No. 11 Iowa State, 29-6, on Nov. 24. It was Iowa's 16th straight win in the series.
