What is an email­based marketing program and how does it work?

At its simplest, HTML-based email campaigns provide a simple,

strategic and cost-effective way to connect to your audience.

Whether companies utilize e-promos, e-invites or e-newsletters,

email marketing offers an unrivalled capability to customize a

message, while offering an incomparable resource for generating

valuable customer data.

Generally less expensive than traditional direct mail, email

allows for greater frequency of distribution and an incredible level

of customization. This permits a company to segment its message

based on key demographic or psychographic data.

The ability to reach customers with greater frequency at lower

costs, customize the messages based on real data and immediately

track reactions, all contribute to making email a very powerful

marketing tool.

The following sets out some of the fundamental terms and

basic steps a company should consider when building an email

marketing program.

Message envelope

The message envelope is the first thing that customers see when

an email lands in their inbox. The “from” line is very important –

if customers don’t recognize the sender, they may mistake the email

for unwanted mail and delete it. Equally critical, however, is the

subject line.

Like a message printed on a direct-mail envelope, this line

should tell them about what’s “inside” and entice recipients to open

the email. Like the “from” line, the subject line differentiates your

email from spam. Don’t use words like “free”, “special offer” and

“act now” since those are common words used by spammers. You’ll

also want to avoid the use of exclamation marks.

The main email

By far the most effective email marketing messages are in HTML

and include both text and graphics. And there are some basic

guidelines to adhere to in order to be effective:

> Keep it short. The main email should be as close to one screen in

length as possible. Each article should have a unique landing page

that’s hosted on your site.

> Make the content relevant. Know your audience and generate great

content for them. If your open and click-though rates start to drop,

look more closely at your content.

> Tell them why they are receiving it. Remind customers of why they

are on your list. You can do this either at the top of the main email

or at the bottom. A simple message like “This e-newsletter is sent

to customers of ABC Inc.” will indicate to customers that this is a

safe email and that they are not being spammed.

> Identify yourself. In the main email, you’ll want to identify yourself

as clearly as possible. That means giving your full company name,

your street address and possibly your main phone number.

> Have a clear call to action. An email marketing message should

lead or prompt readers to take further action. For e-newsletters,

that may be a prompt to read articles. E-promos, on the other

hand, could lead customers to more information on your website,

a special promotion or a coupon.

> Subscribe/unsubscribe buttons. With PIPEDA (Canada’s new,

strict privacy laws), giving customers the option to unsubscribe is

mandatory. It’s also important you give a clear and easy method

to unsubscribe. This can be done by programming a button that

leads to an online “opt out” or unsubscribe form or automatically

generates an “unsubscribe me” email. Once received, you must

stop emailing marketing material – case closed.

PIPEDA

Make sure all your email marketing is PIPEDA compliant. The

guidelines outlined by PIPEDA can be complex so it’s important

that you review them and closely comply. Visit their website at

The email deployment platform

In order to get accurate tracking of your email marketing message,

it will need to be deployed through an email deployment platform.

These platforms count or track the “opens” and “click-throughs”

and can be surprisingly detailed, offering information as to who

opened the email, at what time, and repeat rates. You’ll also know

what articles have been read or which “buttons” have been clicked.

If the buttons lead to your website (as we advise), then you can

run basic web analytics to see how long they’ve stayed on the page

and where they jumped to next.

Services and programs exist that allow companies to create,

deploy and track programs themselves, while there are also

corporate communications firms specializing in email programs that

are constantly pushing the creative and technological envelope.

Moveable expands printing capabilitiesMoveable, one of Canada’s leading graphic arts service providers and a long-time Carpet Factory business (23 years and counting!), has just made a significant investment in its fast-growing printing division. In December it installed two Xerox DocuColor 7000s, adding to an already imposing line-up of printing and bindery equipment. “The 7000s further enhance our ability to provide high-quality printing solutions at competitive rates and blazingly fast turnarounds,” says Moveable President Joe Kotler. Have a seat The BENCHmark program was developed by the Liberty Village Business Improvement Area (LVBIA) to create a permanent collection of one-of-a-kind benches throughout Liberty Village. The initiative invited area artists to create works of art on wooden park benches that “connect the area’s industrial past, creative present and unlimited future”. After receiving proposals from area artists, a jury of LVBIA board members and community leaders selected two artists to complete three benches. Jessica Perlitz, a professional artist living and working in Liberty Village, and Mina Arakawa, a BFA candidate at the Ontario College of Art & Design, were selected by the jury. Called “The Interval Bench”, Ms. Perlitz’ work, inspired by Marshal McLuhan, integrates “talk tubes” at either end of the bench, while Ms. Arakawa’s work recreates an archival map of the area on one bench and a modern Google satellite image of Liberty Village on the other. “This innovative program is bringing urban beauty to the public realm and supporting the creativity and community spirit that defines Liberty Village,” explains Lynn Clay, LVBIA Executive Director. “We look forward to adding benches throughout the neighbourhood.”

Fire safety Thanks to all those who participated in November’s fire drill at the Toronto Carpet Factory; commendations are in order for exiting the building in an orderly and timely fashion. Just a reminder: in the event of a fire alarm you are always responsible for evacuating the building and gathering in the designated assembly area on the grass outside Lamport Stadium. A further reminder: if you have yet to return the forms we provided regarding Fire Wardens and Persons Requiring Assistance during an Evacuation, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you for joining us in enhancing the safety of all those working in the complex.

Appetizing snacks, frosty beverages and convivial company were the order of the day at November’s Hall Crawl, hosted by the first floor at 67/77 Mowat Ave. Many thanks to our friends at the Labatt King Street Institute for hosting the Toronto

Carpet Factory’s annual seasonal drop-in for tenants on December 7. Along with some lovely wine from Maxxium Canada, guests enjoyed an assortment of well-poured Labatt products! Your contributions of non-perishable goods for the Daily Bread Food Bank, along

with the more than $400 raised for Autism Society Ontario, were greatly appreciated. We had fun dropping by with breakfast for the businesses in the York Liberty Buildings in December. We hope you enjoyed the treats.

As you know, we believe in doing all we can to promote the businesses within our community. For instance, we encourage you to write

When people think of performing,

thoughts usually turn to high-

performance musicians, athletes or

artists. While this is certainly true,

performance also applies to each and

every one of us.

We are all performers in life. Our

ability to bounce out of bed, charge

through the day and perform our duties

with energy and vitality should not be

ignored or taken for granted.

Many of us take care of other

people in addition to ourselves every day.

So, self-care is essential to maintaining

our energy and health. In order to be

able to perform at our highest level,

we definitely need to take care of our

own needs first. By doing this, we can

execute at our best, feeling energized and

renewed, instead of depleted and spent.

What causes us to feel run down?

A variety of things. For those who

are musicians and artists, repetitive

movements can cause strains and

other injuries. For those of you who

work in an office environment, cradling

the telephone between your ear and

shoulder can cause a strain in the neck

and shoulder muscles. Sitting for hours

can cause low back pain. Staring at a

computer can cause headaches and neck

strain. And these things just happen at

work! What about when you go home?

Most people think of seeking

therapy after they have injured themselves

in an accident. While of course this is

true, symptoms such as numbness in

fingers and hands, headaches, stiffness

in the upper back and other pains that

many of us feel during the course of

the day are often ignored. Because we

are all living longer and wanting to stay

active, giving ourselves the opportunity

to participate in activities and sports that

bring us joy should be a high priority.

Performing At Your Best! Are You?

Gaze skyward! We’re looking forward to seeing the finishing touches put on the new entrance at 67 Mowat Avenue in the coming weeks. The numbers for the address went up on the canopy recently and we did some decorative winter planting this week. The balance of the landscaping will be completed once the weather warms up.

Second “Green P” lot now open

The new 200-space Green P car park on Liberty Street, east of Atlantic Avenue, opened recently for employees, visitors and residents of the area. The parking rates are $1.00 per half hour with a full-day maximum of $6.00 and night maximum of $2.00.

The program operates Monday to Friday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and can be reached at (416) 760-0000 – just provide your address and the time for pick-up.

Making the flu shot painless We thought you might appreciate the convenience of receiving your flu shot on site during the work day, so we arranged for two nurses from Seiden Health Management, a private health care provider, to administer the vaccine in the Toronto Carpet Factory Resource Centre on November 15. The nurses were fully booked for the day and managed to give more than 100 flu shots during that period. If you considered it a convenience, let us know, and we’ll certainly contemplate holding another clinic next fall.

Try the French toast! We hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the lovely new patio at the Warehouse Grill this past summer. As well as offering a wonderful breakfast on weekdays, Howard is now open at 8 a.m. for brunch on Saturdays (we highly recommend the French toast).
