There’s lots to do, such as enjoying an opera at the castle; or you can spend the last summer weeks here when the whole island is open during the Skärgårdsfesten, our island festival designed to show how great the area really is. You’ll find Kållandsö some 30 minutes from Lidköping, either by bus or car or why not by boat. When you’re in the saddle, don’t miss the opportunity to visit all the special sites along the trails. If you didn’t bring your own bicycle there are places you can hire one marked on the map found everywhere on the island. Join us and relax – we guarantee you’ll find a new favourite place.

Läckö Skans The fortification was built to defend against an expected attack from Danish-Norwegian troups. Erected in 1676 by Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, it is located by Ullersund on the Läckö road. Earthen ramparts remind of the placement, today surrounded by around 70 large oak trees. The area is a nature reserve and is part of the Natura 2000 program.

Djurgårdsudde and the neigh-bouring Torsängens nature reserve join to form a 7 ha parklike area offering a lovely, rolling recreation countryside on the shore of Lake Vänern exactly where Kållandsö island begins. A large number of old oak trees stand near the shore, including the largest one in Västergötland. More than nine meters in diameter it stands next to the road in the area between Djurgårdsudde and Torsängen. There is a café and boat berths. Though there are no guest places, visiting boats are welcome to berth temporarily where there is space.

Kållandsö hembygdsgård The Kållandsö Hembygdsgård is located close to the Otterstad Church. Here at the homestead museum you’ll find a tradi-tional cottage, a tool shed, a cow shed and a newer, timbered house. Up on the hill beside the road stands one the last windmills on the island. The museum area contains several buildings displaying more than 1000 items.

Otterstad kyrka was built in 1854 using building material from the Saint Katarina Chapel, the Senäte medieval church and the old Otterstad chuch, raised to open space for the current church. The baptismal font came from the Senäte church as did one of the three bells hang-ing in the tower. There is an inscription on that bell and initials from the noble families Natt och Dag and Posse. Three tombstones from the old church are inlaid in the tower floor.

Otterstad medieval church site The old Otterstad Church stood around 700 metres from today’s edifice. Probably built in the early 1200s, it was torn down 1854 when the new church was built. Today the only remnantsare a few simple gravestones.

Läckö Castle and Vänerskärgården – Victoriahuset nature centre

Visitors from around the world come to Läckö Castle drawn by the beautiful nature, to dip their feet in Lake Vänern’s glittering waters and to be enchanted by the storied palace on the rock. The sum-mer in 2019 they’ll find a stunning exhib-ition of lovely glass design, of exciting meetings of paintings by Karl Axel Pehrs-on and photographs by garden master Simon Irvine, of dramatized shows and interesting guided tours. Children are offered treasure hunts, music theatre and secret passage walks .

The Small Castle Garden bubbles with life. Everything edible is harvested and brought to the shore restaurant or the much praised Hvita Hjorten restaurant in naturum. No truer meaning of the phrase “from field to fork” can be found.

The naturum Vänerskärgården – Victoria-huset lies tastefully embedded in nature just south of the castle. In addition to the restaurant, exhibitions, activities for the young, conference facilities and hotel

rooms are found here. Boat expeditions and kajak tours are arranged to start here and everything connects to the rich nature life in the area.

Every summer we offer opera in the open. Summer 2019 offers an amazing opera festival with The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart as the main feature and a song festival later in August. The autumn is fill-ed with guests, ghosts, lectures, courses and much more.

11 Spiken, the largest lake fishing hamlet on Lake Vänern and in northern Europe is located on the Spikefjorden Bay. Fishing for household needs has always been important on Kållandsö and in the early 1900s, Spiken was a more genuine fishing hamlet.

Restaurant, fishing sheds and smoke houses Spiken offers restaurants, fishing sheds and smoke houses with sales. The air is filled with a glorious fragrance of smoked fish, including salmon, lavaret and burbot. Other specialties are Lake Vänern fish and Swedish Caviar, roe of the vendace fish. There are a number of small restaurants and picnic tables.

ActivitiesThere’s always something to do in the fishing harbour, such as mingle, battle at the minigolf, hike to Läckö Castle or book a boat tour into the archipelago.

Experience some nostalgia at veteran car meets with music from the Fifties and longlines of shining cars. Over the years the event has become a party for the whole family. Some 100 classics from the 20s and later are on review.

Spiken Guest Harbour The guest harbour offers fuel and around 50 berths. The service facility houses top modern equipment for the boats and in the Fyren lighthouse is a store, café and crafts shop.

If you come by car and have your own boat on tow, you can launch it in Spiken. It’s not far to the amazing Eken archipel-ago.

You can relax and fish either from the shore or on your boat. As far as you use handheld equipment no licence is needed.

The season opens with the Easter Marketin Spiken. All Easter delicacies are availa-ble, including seafood, garden products and locally produced Easter specialities.

The Medieval Market on the Läckö Castle rampart has become a tradition that lasts two days at midsummer. You can taste medieval food and drinks, rummage in ceramics and silver in the market stalls and participate in various historical activities,such as shooting bows and arrows.

Läckö Kajakträff is organized the weekend after midsummer. During 3 days you can enjoy lectures, barbecue hang-out, idyllic camping, courses and lovely organized group paddling.

Läckö Visfestival This is the fifth conse-cutive year the castle gates open for the Läckö Song Festival. Some of Sweden’s most popular troubadours will make the castle courtyard an incredible site and frame for the mood created on the festival

Löjrommens Dag is scheduled for November. Experience fishing vendace roe in Spiken’s harbour. Feel and taste Vänern’s red gold – the Swedish caviar. Skärgårdsfest on KållandsöThe islands round Kållandsö are ideal for boat camping. There are many natural harbours, as well as guest harbours with all service imaginable.

Should you want some culture and people contact after a quiet day at sea, choose one of the guest harbours at Läckö Castle or Spiken. A calmer setting is found at Hörvikens Marina and Djurgårdsudde. If you intend to visit Lurö Island you will find guest harbors at Stenstaka and Asp-holmen, café and restaurant at the Lurö pier in Basteviken Cove and Stenstaka.

Spiken’s fishing harbour is the largest freshwater harbour in Lake Vänern and northern Europe. It has seen many changes over the last 30 years and the stories about the 1950s and 1960s abound. Life was more relaxed then, fishing from open boats and taking in the nets by hand, often to the secure music of hot-bulb engines.

Of Vänern’s some 50 commercial fisher-men, 8-10 work from Spiken. The catches include pikeperch, pike, perch, burbot, brown trout and crayfish. Pikes over 20 kg and pikeperch over 11 kg have been caught. The latter is the most sought and have the highest price.

Winter is the best salmon and trout fish-ing time in Vänern. This is when really large pike are constantly near the surface. In spring and autumn salmon follows schools of baitfish like vendace to the surface, eating enormous amounts.

Fishing round Kållandsö

During the summer months there are still smaller, 2-3 kg fish near the surface, while larger ones choose deeper areas. Generally salmon is seen to move more in open waters than trout.

Some of the catch is sent to the fish auc-tion in Göteborg, but most of it stays in Spiken and sells in produced forms such as smoked or as sandwich filling. You can buy fresh fish as well.

At the end of summer coast communities seem empty and silent. However, not completely, for starting in August rows of trawlers turn up at dawn. Salmon and trout lead dangerous lives. But there is little risk of depleting the waters; some-one has calculated that one salmon or trout is caught in 9 hours of fishing.

There is a special season for just taking roe-fish between October 17 and De-cember 17. Financially vendace fishing is very important. The vendace is called ‘sil’ by those living on Kållandsö, ‘sil’ with a thick l-sound. There are many dialectic names for fish and fishing tools around Vänern. In Dalsland it’s called ‘vimma’ and in Värmland ‘löga’.

Many of the churches on Kållandsö and Kålland are medieval and house important cultural values. However their primary function is as places for cultural treasures.The churches in Sunnersberg parish welcome you to Sunday worship held. Every Sunday at 10.00 there is a worship service with communion at Lockörn Church. On summer evenings there is a ”Quiet Hour” at 20.00, a simpler worship or mass, often with music.

The Eken Archipelago comprises 120 islands and many bare skerries. This flat island group seldom rises higher than 10 m above the water level. On the thin humus layer a pine forest hosts lichen, mosses, heather, crowberry and fes-cue grass, with only lichen and a few plants on the outer skerries. Common, herring and black-backed gulls, tern, red-breasted merganser, cormorant and sandpiper. Osprey and hobby add to the diversity on the larger islands.

White-tailed eagle have nested in Lake Vänern since 2001. With a little luck you’ll see its grand silhouette against the sky. Ekens archipelago is part of the Kål-land Nature Reserve which includes 15 bird protection areas where no one may land during the nesting period.

many possibilities for time on the water. There are various alternatives including several charter boats with a knowledge- able guide to lead you to such islands as Lurö or Djurö at the centre of Lake Vänern.

Walk, cycle or paddle at KållandsöKållandsö offers many opportunities for outdoor life and experiences in the woods and near water.

The Stora Eken trail runs out onto an is-land amidst varied terrain. Take your own boat, or book a water taxi from Spiken or Läckö. Barbecue areas are sited along the trail, with benches and shelters for over-night accommodation.

The Traneberg Trail begins at Läckö Golf Club and takes you along the shore in variedterrain with great nature experiences of the archipelago. There are several grill site, an earth closet and a windbreak. (6.5 km long, blue marked.)

A hiking trail starts in Läckö and goes around Roparudden peninsula west of the castle. The trail runs in rocky terrain and offers a fine view out over Vänern, Kinne-kulle and Stora Eken. (Blue trail mark; around 4 km long.)

The Fröfjorden Trail starts and ends at the Otterstad Church and is part of the Pilgrim Trail. It is possible to change over

to the orange trail to Läckö about 3 km in. (Blue trail mark; 5,2 km long.)The Kinneviken Trail starts and ends at Läckö Strand. Trail information is found at the Vänerskärgården-Victoriahuset Nature Centre, Läckö Strand and the Tourist Bureau. (Blue trail mark; about 3 km long.)Cycling is another way to come close to nature. At Kållandsö it’s possible to hire bi-cycles at several sites. Bicycle helmets and seats for children are also available. There are a number of excellent cycling trails on the island that use small roads with minimal car traffic.

You can also hire a kayak with needed equipment. In the waters surrounding Kål-landsö you will experience a diverse nature and a rich cultural landscape close at hand. The archipelago is dense offering calm wa-ter even in windy weather. When you start at Naven you will soon reach Läckö Castle and can view it from its most beautiful side, namely from the sea.

From the Läckö royal demesne in the north south to Örslösa, Lake Vänern’s shore and forest landscape is coated by beehives from Läckö Honey. We handle the honey carefully and without additives. Each autumn we provide sugar for the bees since we’ve ”robbed” them of their winter stores.

The Naven lighthouse is one of the best-known sites in Lake Vänern and the one with the longest tradition. It is visible from afar stand-ing at the western entrance to the Eken archipelago. For five generations the Jonsson family have taken care of the lighthouse, starting in mid-1800s. The last to live permanently on the site moved out in 1952. The lighthouse can only be reached by boat.

At the Gästgiveri Traneberg you can eat lunch. We even have a variable à la carte menu on weekends. The Golf Restaurant at Gästgiveri Traneberg is found in the farm’s old sawmill from the early 1900s. The renovation makes use of the original interior from 1906. It’s a fantastic setting with a large open fireplace and oak tables.In running the restaurant I have a good collaboration with the Läckö Golf Club. The club provides a lovely 18-hole course, bicycle rentals and caravan sites. One of Kållandö’s beautiful hiking trails connects to our parking lot.

14 S:ta Marie Chapel In the Middle Ages S:ta Marie Chapel was the parish church for the Torsö parish. First mentioned in 1344, it served the north-western part of Kållandsö. For some reason the church was abandonedand left to fall into disrepair over many years. One theory is that the cause was due to the pest that emptied many a parish without parishioners. As the 1500s began, the rectory and its land was owned by the cathedral in Skara. In 1520s Traneberg was sold off and bought by Tord Bonde. In the 1600s Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie bought it and be-came interested in the local churches. In 1678 he built a new church on the old foundation wall, He named this new chapel S:t Maria in honour of his wife, the Princess Maria Eufrosyne of Pfalz. This chapel was repaired and extended in 1750, in much because it was the nearest church for all the seafaring persons using the Traneberg harbours.

Two hours at walking pace NE from Kål-landsö, that is at a speed of 7-8 knots, and an hour east from Lurö lies the Djurö archipelago all by itself in the middle of Lake Vänern. When the visibility is good you can see the silhouette of the Gisslan cliff from Kållandsö.

When it comes to its nature the Djurö archipelago is markedly different from Lurö. Much of the land facing Ekenäs is marked by previous cultivation. This de-parts radically from what visitors from the west meet – an impregnable Djurö. The view from the east is even harsher offe-ring only reefs and cinder lichen. With the exception of the main island’s two kilo-metre length, a careful count finds some 20 larger islands and perhaps 30 skerries, all depending on the water level. It feels as if one is on one of the country’s most isolated archipelagos.

Here in the midst of Vänern species from west and east meet. From the west comes

the small, lovely pink heather and the east the wild rosemary whose fragrance fills the air on hot days. The Djurö ar-chipelago is luxurious, but recognizable. Among the rubble and sand you’ll find yellow and purple loosestrife, sedge, marsh lousewort, lesser and greater spearwort and fen bedstraw.

People lived on Djurö long before the lighthouse period. Families are documen-ted as early as the 1600s, hunting, fishing and foresting. In 1874 the first lighthouse was built, a red house with the lighthouse on the roof. The keeper’s home was built as well. The lighthouse was manned until 1969. A curiosity is that the mighty Djurö lighthouse lies farther from the mainland than any other in Sweden.

On the southern tip of the island stands the superintendent’s house which, as with another farm, is called “därframme” meaning ‘standing out there’. From the farm you can see the hunting cabin built

in late 1800s. The industry brothers Kempe bought the islands in 1890 and imported fallow, red and roe deer for hunting which ended in 1970. The lighthouse at Noludden and the super’s house are now youth hostels booked via the Lidköping touristbureau.

Anchorage, pier and toilette is found in Malbergshamnen on northern Djurö, in Årans harbour on Långön and on the south side of Tribergsö.

There are no regular trips to Djurö. If you don’t have your own means, the only way to get there by booking tours from Eke-näs, Lurö or Spiken.

LuröLake Vänern is called Dalbosjön west of Lurö and to the east Värmlandssjön. Lurö’s history stretches far back. The island has been inhabited since the Iron Age and cul-tivated until the mid-1950s. Archeological excavations carried out in 1989 showed that the ruins on the island date to the 1100s and were the remains of a Romanesque apse church. Monks on pilgrimage to Trondheim rested on Lurö and there probably was a monastery here. Today there are several hiking trails and fine beaches.

The Kålland Association has worked for a number of years for a durable tourist industry and to create opportunities for more people to live and work on Kållandsö. Its values must be constantly cared for, something best done by a permanent population who see the needs and steps required.
