Idom was established in 1957 as a result of the effort and integrative work by the engineer Rafael Escolá (Barcelona 1919 - Bilbao 1995).
upported by a young engineer, Luis Olaortúa (1932-2003), Rafael Escolá made Idom an As-sociation of professionals in which persons co-operate with one another, joined by the work and ownership of the Firm, seeking professional and human development, as well as the finest service for Clients.
Rafael and Luis were also pioneers in providing professional independent engineering services during a period in which engineers worked, for the most part, as employees of large industrial companies.
As a result of the evolution of the market and the new needs of clients, Idom began a path of per-manent growth, in services as well as persons. This has led to a leading multidisciplinary Group in which over 2,500 people conduct their profes-sional activity, distributed in 32 offices, located in fourteen countries on four continents.
New principal office of the IDOM Group in Bilbao, SpainProject
The new principal office of the Idom Group is lo-cated in a former bonded warehouse (a customs port warehouse) in Deusto canal in the Port of Bilbao, Spain. It has an area of 14,400 m2 for of-fices, research and development areas such as a clean room, a prototype workshop and social areas.
An important objective of the project was to achieve a large open work space, with extensive intra- and inter-departmental visual communication, without bar-riers between the different levels of function and assign-ment to the Idom firm. In the centre of the floors, a hall is used as an area for secretaries, or as a lounge area for talking by mobile phone without disturb-ing other colleagues.
An innovative meeting placeApplication
In the largest work areas, few offices have been planned, although there are many internal meet-ing rooms and team work rooms. In order to pre-
vent creation of psychological barri-ers between the offices, rooms and the open area, Idom preferred not to use a conventional partition closure, with fixed glass and door, but rather a sliding closure that would eliminate the barriers.
EXTENDO, the telescopic synchronized system by KLEIN, was the option that best integrated the different areas in order to achieve the objective established.
ompared to other sliding door applications avail-able on the market, the EXTENDO system offers greater opening, leaving a clear passageway without any floor tracks.
To continue the concept of integration, in some offices the track has been recessed in the ceil-ing and in others it remains visible, according to the construction needs, with a special black anodized aluminium finish that gives continuity to the dark ceiling. The 2-doors system opens all of the panels synchronously by simply activat-ing the leading door, sliding along the length of a fixed glass panel set in the same extrusion as the mobile panels.
