The sound quality your instrumentproduces is highly dependent alsoon the mallet you choose. In general, soft mallets produce more funda-mental pitch and less overtone;hard mallets produce less funda-mental pitch and more overtone.Large bars require proportionatelylarge mallet heads.
To assist you in helping you choosethe mallets which produce thebest sound for your instruments,STUDIO 49 now includes its newmallet guide with each new instru-ment, making it quick and easy foryou and your students to createoptimum sound.

SKIN INSTRUMENTSAvailable with real calfskin or goat-skin, or optional plastic heads in mostcases. Natural skins have a warmertimbre than the somewhat dry soundof plastic heads. Plastic, however, hasthe advantage of constant pitch. Itdoes not react hygroscopically anddoes not need to be retuned afterchanges in temperature or humidity.
Richness and purity of the beatdepends on the precise all-aroundtuning of the drumskin. In tambours, tambourines, and in simple screwtimpani, the required pitch must beobtained by adjusting all the tensionscrews (always across from eachother). The rotary timpani, models DPas well as the kettle drums, models KP,have a central, very precise rotarytuning mechanism, which enables fastand simple tuning by turning thetimpani shell. There is no need toadjust any screws, which are usedonly to balance or correct skin tensionfrom time to time.
Note: The skin of Djembes, Ashikos,Congas, Bongos, as well as tambourinesand timpani should be loosened aftereach playing.

CajonsThe Cajon, originally from LatinAmerica, will be offered fromMountain Rythym in the twomost popular styles. The Spanish-style cajon incorporates a tuneab-le “snare” system to facilitate the“buzz” which is characteristic ofthis style box. For convenience, the snare can be easily and effi-ciently tuned from outside thebox. The standard Peruvian stylecajon is built to the same highstandards as the Spanish version, the difference being the “snares”are omitted. The top corners ofeither cajon can be adjusted, allow-ing the player to customize theamount of “snap” desired for dif-ferent playing styles and musicalneeds.

tsMaintenanceInstruments require proper care and storage. Extreme changes in tempe-rature, humidity, and direct sunlight can cause damage to your instrument.
General CareAll lacquered wood and metal parts can be cleaned with a normalsilicone-free furniture polish. Nickel or chrome surfaces such as stand legsand cymbals are best protected with resin-free refined oil or chromepolish.
XylophonesWhen exposed to strong sunlight or moisture, the pitch of woodenxylophone bars can become altered. When needed, Studio 49 can retuneyour instrument within a reasonable time. The pitch can also change whenusing mallets with heads that are too hard for that particular instrument. Please see our mallet guide included with all new barred instruments.
Xylophones with Grillodur bars, a highly refined fibreglass material, donot lose their pitch regardless of temperature or humidity changes.
Glockenspiels and Metallophones These bars don't change their pitch, however, nickel-plated glockenspielbars are inclined to corrode in extreme climates, especially when storedin humid conditions. Therefore, the bars should be lightly oiled, using arefined oil, from time to time in order to keep their natural shine andprevent corrosion.
Tambours and TambourinesThe tension on tambours and tambourines should beeased after they are played. All tension screws should beloosened by approximately ? turn. This will conserve boththe skin and frame.
Rotary and Kettle Drums The bodies of rotary and kettle drums should be turned so the instrumentis in the middle tone area and the tension arms of the head are as hori-zontal as possible.
Image Tension-ArmsThe threads of both the tension screws and the tension arms of skininstruments should be lubricated with a fine oil. This will guarantee aneasy, yet sensitive tuning of your instrument.
Spare partsDespite careful maintenance, some instrument parts are subject tonatural wear, especially parts made of rubber or similar materials. Theseshould be replaced from time to time to maintain the full scope and tonalqualities of your instruments.
On our home page, www.studio49.de, under Repair Information Systemyou will find the corresponding spare parts for all generations ofinstruments manufactured since the establishment of our company in1949, including replacement bars for all barred instrument series.
Dear Music Lovers, We are often asked for suggestions for appropriate musical literature. To help you find such pieces, we have put together a list in an internetdatabase. It allows you to search using different criteria, such as degree ofdifficulty, author, content, etc. You can arrange and print the titlesquickly, as desired.
This is a partial list of available titles and does not include a detaileddescription of each. The degreeof difficulty is included as arough guide.
We hope that our new InternetInformation Service is helpful. Touse the database, please visitwww.studio49.de and click onOrff Literature.
We wish you much enjoyment inyour music making.
