Get ready to put on your dancing shoes!Well, it’s that time of year again – time to come celebrate the AAM in style, this year with a magnificent Great Gatsby theme. Hopefully by the time you you read this, your Ball tickets have been purchased. Our annual Ball is our biggest operating fundraiser, so with your help and the help of our wonderful sponsors, the Association can keep the lights on and activities and events planned for another year! We are trying something new for the Ball’s silent auction and we hope you like it. A giant thank you goes out to all the volunteers who help plan the event, donate and collect items for the silent auction, as well as the Ball committee who do all of the above and more. Without you, we wouldn’t have a fabulous Ball to look forward to, and a special thank you goes to our outgoing Major Events Director, Sherlyn Bourne, who came up with the fabulous theme and decorations (her poor visiting son had to bring suitcases full of feathers to us).

I also want to take a moment to say thanks for your commitment and support of our Association. 2014 was a year of great change and unfortunately through it all we were unable to close the 2014 financial books. This forced us to delay the Annual General Meeting. Please know we did everything in our power to make it happen, but we also wanted to make sure we gave the accountants enough time to handle the audit of our accounts properly. Everything should be in working order for the auditors by the end of the month with the AGM being held no later than the end of May. Your patience is greatly appreciated and we will notify all members at least 14 days out from the meeting.

This is my last issue as the editor of KLAmerican. It’s been a fun two years, but now it is time to give someone else the chance to come to you each month with news and insights for the community of the American Association of Malaysia! I will still be in KL in the near term, so this is not good bye…

April is shaping up to be another exciting month at the AAM, capped off by our much-anticipated A Great Gatsby Ball on the 25th. To get in the mood for this big event, our monthly Book Club will be reading the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic and will get together to discuss it on the 21st. So get ready to party like it’s 1925 and join us for the Ball!

In addition to all that glitz and glamor, the AAM will host its usual monthly activities starting with First Fridays on the 3rd and Bingo on the 7th. This month, we are also offering a cemetery tour for the Chinese festival of All Souls’ Day (Ching Ming) on the 13th, followed by an elegant Lunch Bunch at Villa Danieli on the 15th and a beauty themed Coffee Morning on the 16th. We finish the month on the 30th with a full day tour to see two of KL’s most popular attractions – the FRIM canopy walk and Batu Caves. Hope to see you at the Ball or one of these activities!

In this month’s issue, I will be sharing photographs from my recent trip to Bagan and I will tell you all about my fun road trip in Jordan. Debz talks about drunk driving in her latest installment of KLKonfidential. And as always, there are lots of memories to share.

Spring is here! The Ball is upon us. This will be my first Ball. I’m not sure what to expect. I’m looking forward to seeing the decorations and everyone dressed up. It should be a fun night.

I write this article a month ahead so I just came back from our newly revamped First Fridays poolside at The Troika. I feel like it was a success. We had a really good turnout and raised money for charity. I am looking for a couple of volunteers to help in the upcoming months. If you like to bake or have a breakfast casserole that you think is good, I could use your help. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to charity. It’s a good cause to come out and support, as well as an opportunity and meet and eat with others.

Looking ahead, I also have a coffee morning set up with representatives from Tropicana Medical Centre who will do a talk for us titled “Beauty from the Inside Out.” We will have a dietician who will give us tips about health and ways to be healthier, as well as a plastic surgeon who will talk about esthetic beauty. It should be an informative morning.

If you have an idea for a coffee morning or something that interests you, please send me an email. Let me know what your thoughts are. My email address is [email protected].

Community Service

Thank you notesLittle Sisters of the PoorGratitude is the memory of the Heart.

With this sentiment that we, the little sisters, and our residents would like to thank you and all the members of AAM for all your efforts of charity to support so many charitable works. It was a great honor for us to be present at your donation presentation to meet all the membersand other charitable members of the organizations.

It was like beautiful flowers in the same garden at the service of our brothers and sisters.

Thanks for the photos.

Rumah HopeThank you very much for your kind donation for Rumah Hope. The 50 children, caregivers and management committee members appreciate your kindness very much. We love the pictures you sent us.

Hello,There’s always something going on at the AAM and service to our community is no exception. In case you don’t already know, I’d like to tell you just a few of the ways the AAM keeps busy in the community.

• Charity visits – I think of these visits as our due diligence. It’s important that AAM knows the who/what/when/where/why of the groups it supports. These visits give the AAM the opportunity to see first–hand the type of work being done and under what conditions, how donations are being used and where further help is needed.

• First Fridays – I’m sure you read the Membership Director’s Corner and the new twist to First Fridays at The Troika. Any proceeds will to go charity.

• The Entertainer coupon book – Entertainer Malaysia will donate 20% of the purchase price of the book or the app to ILTC – Independent Living & Training Centre Malaysia, an AAM supported charity. In an earlier newsletter I wrote about this group of disabled persons that provides free services for their members who are living with disabilities throughout the country.

If you have an idea or would like to propose an event or know of a vendor who is interested in giving back or perhaps you just want to give a shout out to a local ‘hero’, please contact one of the AAM Directors.

I will be stepping away from my position as the Community Service Director for 2015. I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve met and had the privilege to work alongside – and for that I owe a heartfelt thank you. There will be new faces and some known friends dedicating their time, talent and treasures to the AAM 2015 Board of Directors.

In closing, I want to share some of the thank you notes the AAM received from the charities it supports. Naturally, the donations were much appreciated but so were the photos. Our resident photographer Randee Duncan meticulously took photos of all of the individuals receiving their donation at the Annual Charity Check Presentation in February as well as some great group photos and candid shots.

With warm regards,

Marilyn KindyCommunity Service Director

What’s On in . . . April

This cultural and feng shui tour to Sungai Besi and Nilai Memorial Park is a perennial favorite among AAM members. “Ching Ming,” or All Souls’ Day, is a Chinese festival that falls in early April and is celebrated for 20 days. The Chinese believe in life after death and ancestral worship. They have elaborate funeral rites and interesting practices such as hell notes and house warmings for the dead. The tour starts with a visit to the old traditional Chinese graves in Sungai Besi, followed by a visit to modern graves in Nilai Memorial Park which is built on 200 acres of excellent feng shui burial ground. Believe it or not, some graves are built for the purpose of cheating death! The tour includes a visit to plots of varying sizes and faiths - Buddhists, Christians and free thinkers! Most interesting is the “Millionaires’ Row” where some family plots cost over RM2 million.

Wear modest, comfortable clothing (no sexy shorts or low-cut shirts) and good walking shoes. Bring a hat or umbrella to protect yourself from the sun and plenty of drinking water. The price includes round-trip bus transportation, English speaking tour guide, and Chinese lunch (non halal) in a small local restaurant.

RSVP: E-mail [email protected] by Monday, 6 April.

Have you ever imagined that a small bite from a tiny mosquito could be so deadly?

Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitos. At times it’s coined as the urban disease – people living in urban and suburban areas are equally at risk for infection. Currently, Dengue cases in Selangor account for 50% of cases nationwide. Selangor has seen a 75% rise in Dengue fever, with 17 reported deaths, compared to only two deaths in January 2014. Between January and September 2014, there were 136 deaths from Dengue fever – more than triple the same period last year. In total, there have been 98,128 Dengue cases in 2014 compared with 37,698 cases in 2013.

While these statistics are sometimes overwhelming, you can arm yourself with knowledge and tips on how to protect yourself and loved ones from the deadly bites. Remember, there is still no vaccine and no cure. The best way to survive Dengue fever is to go to a hospital as soon as symptoms suggest an infection.

The AAM invites you to come and hear this VERY IMPORTANT health talk presented by Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care on the causes, symptoms and prevention of Dengue Fever. This is a free event. Light refreshments will be served.

RSVP: ATTENDEES MUST RSVP. Please email [email protected] by Monday, 6 April.

This tour is one whole day of non-stop adventure. FRIM stands for Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. It is located 16km NW of Kuala Lumpur in Bukit Lagong, Kepong. Beauty of

BaganStory by Kim StarrPhotos by David Terenzio

Though widely considered one of the great “bucket list” destinations in Southeast Asia, and often mentioned in the same breath as Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Borobudour in Indonesia, the Bagan Archeological Zone has not yet been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But don’t let this lack of official recognition fool you into thinking it is not worth a visit. On the contrary, Bagan is truly awe-inspiring!

Located in the Mandalay region of Myanmar on the

banks of the Ayeyarwady River, Bagan boasts the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas and stupas in the world, some dating as far back as the 9th century. We reached Bagan by a short flight from Yangon and spent two days exploring the archeological zone. Seeing the endless red brick ruins dotted across the agrarian landscape from the top of a stupa is a magical experience, as was enjoying a picnic lunch amongst the ruins and watching the sunset over the ancient city on a river cruise.

Recently a friend’s 18 year old daughter was involved in an accident in KL. She was the front seat passenger and had been trying to get her MP3 player to sync with the car stereo system. The driver decided to help and as a result of the distraction she crashed into the central reservation. Luckily, there were no serious injuries. The car, however, was not so lucky and was a write off.

It got me thinking. 1. Are we doing enough to educate teenage drivers? 2. Had the driver been drinking?3. What happens to insurance in these cases?4. Sadly, research has shown that not enough is done to educate drivers, let alone new drivers.

In this case no, they had not been drinking. But I have now started to notice the number of expats who climb behind the wheel having had, as they say in Scotland, “A night on the lash.” So here is some information about the Law on Drunk Driving in Malaysia. 1. If you are suspected of drunk driving, you will be given a breath test.2. Your breath must not exceed 35 on the roadside test. In other words,

35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.3. Unlike in Europe, you cannot refuse to give a breath test. If you do,

you will be arrested. 4. If you score higher than 35 micrograms of alcohol, you will be taken

to a police station where you will have to give a blood and/or urine sample which will determine more exact details.

5. If the driver is injured in an accident and taken to hospital, blood and urine will be taken and tested. Your permission does not need to be given and you do not need to be cautioned.

6. It is not a simple as “How many drinks can I have to be under the limit?” because drinks are assimilated differently. Also, if a man and women have the same drink, a women will show a higher breath test reading.

7. Three and a half units will put you over the limit. Half a pint of beer or one glass of wine is ONE unit. However, glass sizes are larger so a wine glass often contains two units.

So what happens if you are caught drunk driving?Malaysian criminal law varies depending on which state the offense is committed, and the religious affiliation of the offender is also taken into account. This is because Malaysia utilizes a dual justice system that considers Islamic Law when prosecuting Muslims. For example, if you are Muslim and you are caught driving under the influence (DUI) you could be flogged!

The Akta Pengangkutan Jalan, or Road Transport Act, regulates vehicle and driving laws in Malaysia. Sections 44 and 45 deal with “Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.” Section 44 reads that “If a person is intoxicated to the point of not having proper control of a vehicle, they are subject to a fine not exceeding RM4,000 (1,200 USD) and/or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year. They will also lose their license for 12 months.” I should add, if a person is convicted of a DUI, any future visa applications in Malaysia will be put under the microscope. Your employer is also likely to terminate your employment.

Other notes of interest.1. Going back to car insurance, do you know what coverage you have?

Would it surprise you to hear that if your passenger is hurt in an accident you may not have insurance to cover injuries? Most Malaysian insurance only covers the driver for injury.

2. If your car is involved in an accident, a tow company will not move the car without a police report.

3. If you are injured by a drink driver, evidence of injury can only be gathered, and used in any subsequent court case, if given to a government hospital. And most importantly, THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK.

Crossroads in the Desert – A Road Trip to RememberStory and photos by Kim Starr

“Want to go glamping?” the email read. I was intrigued.

“Sure,” I replied. I could infer what glamping was, but I had no idea where in the world my friend wanted to glamp. The email was from my college roommate Marika, and since we graduated more than two decades ago, she had lived in France, Illinois, Kansas, Utah and Mexico. I caught up with her earlier in the year at a conference in Chicago, and at that time she was back in Ohio, living with her parents and helping her mother care for her dying father while her husband was in residency at a hospital in Newark, New Jersey.

Marika was going to be in Jordan for eight weeks in the fall on a Fulbright fellowship. She would be living in the town of Irbid and affiliated with a university there. She had a long list of sites to visit in support of her studies, but as Jordan is the type of place where a woman traveling alone is frowned upon, she needed a traveling companion. I was game. We agreed to meet during the Eid al-Ahda holiday in the desert to figure out what to do with our lives.

Visions of Thelma and Louise and Priscilla Queen of the Desert filledmy dreams. We both seemed to be at a crossroads, and who better to contemplate the future with than a dear old friend who has known me my entire adult life. We met at an orientation session the summer

before our freshman year at Ohio State and became fast friends since we were both going to be architecture majors. We went on to be roommates for the next four years, and we survived the grueling architecture studios together.

I went East for graduate school before entering the rat race in Manhattan. She went West for more academic pursuits, ultimately earning a PhD with an expertise in Islamic Architecture. We never again lived in the same town, but we kept in touch and visited often. She moved to Mexico in support of her husband’s dream of attending medical school, but before I even had the chance to plan a visit there, I had moved to Kuala Lumpur in support of my husband’s dream to work internationally. When we saw each other in Chicago, we had to laugh at the irony of the two of us, such headstrong “girls can do anything” architecture students who grew up to be trailing spouses.

Shortly after I landed at Queen Alia International Airport, we were off on our desert adventure. Our first stop was a series of castles and fortresses east of Amman, but we had to figure out how to get out of Amman first. In the spirit of true adventure, we did not get a GPS with our car, but after missing our turn several times and getting hopelessly lost trying to leave town, we needed help. Who better to ask than the army! We stopped at a roadblock and Marika entertained

the troops who were so impressed to hear a blonde haired blue-eyed American speaking such flawless Arabic that I almost expected a personal escort to our destination. With the sprawl of Amman finally behind us, we were soon enveloped by the emptiness of the vast desert.

Next stop: Petra! We arrived late in the afternoon and made a bee line for the main attraction. The archeological zone was packed with tourists, and the Siq, a 1.2 km gorge that serves as the main entrance to the site, was frighteningly loud as horse drawn carriages rumbled through the crowds. But seeing the enigmatic façade of the treasury appear at last at the end of the Siq stopped me in my tracks. It was breathtaking. We stayed until the sun went down and the crowds dispersed. Then we got up early and did it all again so we could see the ancient city hewn from the desert rock in the light of dawn. As the crowds started to swell, we were ready to move on,

The time had come for our glamping experience. We drove south to Wadi Rum, the famous stomping grounds of Lawrence of Arabia. Before arriving at the campsite, we toured the desert in the back of a pick-up truck. The red sandstone rock formations were reminiscent of Arches National Park in Utah, but the massive sand dunes were like nothing I had ever seen before. We arrived at the camp just after sunset. The tents were modeled after traditional Bedouin dwellings, from the outside at least. The insides were pure satin infused luxury.

Our trusty Chevy Spark

One night of glamping was enough to satisfy our curiosity and we were soon back on the road. Marika tested the limits of the little Chevy Spark we rented with her impressive manual transmission skills as we drove on the most perilous of hills in search of obscure crusader castles. Finally, we arrived at her dorm in Irbid. Yes, I said dorm. We were right back where we started! The University provided her with a modest apartment in the girls’ dorm, and it was eerily familiar with its standard-issue, institutional furniture.

I tagged along as Marika went back to work. I was a guest critic for the day in the architecture studio she was teaching. It was invigorating to be back in the academic environment. Her colleagues were all lovely and soon we had more invitations to dinner than we had days left in the trip. The fabled Middle Eastern hospitality certainly lives up to its hype. Using Irbid as our base, we toured the ruins of the ancient Roman cities of Jerash and Umm Qais, but the highlight of our time in Irbid had to be a barbeque dinner organized by one of her coworkers along the banks of the Yarmouk River. The valley was a lush and green counterpoint to the desert scenery we had experienced thus far, and the views to the West Bank, the Golan Heights and in the distance, the Sea of Galilee, were surreal.

With one more day before my return flight to KL, we headed to Amman for a quick city tour. Sadly, it was time to say goodbye to my dear friend. We never did discover our future paths, but we had fun trying.

Cataract is a common problem especially in the older age group. Approximately one third of those aged 65 or above have cataracts in either one or both their eyes. Malaysia being a rapidly developing country with a growing number of older citizens, this is certainly an emerging medical issue. Age-related cataracts are responsible for 48% of world blindness, which represents about 18 million people.

What is a cataract? How does it affect our vision? Our eyes work like a camera. The clear crystalline lens (situated behind our pupil) bends the light rays to focus objects sharply onto the retina (light sensi-tive tissue lining the back of the eye). The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. A cataract occurs when there is a clouding of the nor-mally clear crystalline lens of our eye. Hence, less light is able to pass through the lens resulting in a blurred and unfocused image.

Causes of cataractEssentially, it can briefly be classified into 3 catego-ries: age-related cataracts, congenital cataracts and secondary cataracts.

Age-related cataract is the most common among the three. The crystalline lens consists mostly of wa-ter and protein. The most abundant protein in the lens is water-soluble protein (α-crystalline). As we age, some of the water-soluble lens protein convert-ed to water-insoluble lens protein. The water- in-soluble lens protein tends to clump together (aggre-gates) and start to cloud a small area of the lens thus resulting in the formation of a cataract. Over time, the clouding gradually will grow larger involving more areas of the lens. Age-related cataracts usually develop at a slow rate resulting in a progressive blur-ring of the vision.

Some people are born with cataracts or develop them during childhood. These cataracts are termed congenital cataracts. Approximately one third of congenital cataracts are inherited from their parents, others are associated with mother having contract-ed an infection during pregnancy, certain inherited syndromes or unknown cause. Visually significant congenital cataracts should be treated in a timely fashion to minimize the development of lazy eyes (vision in the affected eye does not develop nor-mally).

Secondary cataracts develop as a result of some oth-er primary eye diseases (eye inflammation, injury), medical conditions (diabetes mellitus), exposure to toxic substances or certain medications (steroids, antipsychotic drugs) radiation or long term expo-sure to bright ultraviolet light.

What are the symptoms of age-related cataracts? Cataracts may cause a variety of complaints and visual changes, including blurred vision, difficulty with glare (often with bright sunlight or automo-bile headlights while driving at night), dulled color vision, increased nearsightedness accompanied by frequent changes in eyeglass prescription, and oc-casionally double vision in one eye. During the early

stages, a change in glasses and brighter lighting may help to improve vision. However, as cataracts continue to progress and opacify, vision becomes cloudy and stronger glasses or contact lenses will no longer improve sight. Cataracts symptoms are usu-ally gradual, painless and are not associated with any eye redness. Unless the cataract becomes very ma-ture, the individual may experience severe eye pain, redness and headache.

When do you require a cataract surgery? Traditionally, surgery is advocated when the cataract becomes matured or “ripe”. Today, with the advanc-es in the surgical techniques and intraocular lens technology, cataract surgery can be performed as soon as your vision affects your daily activities (such as driving, reading, computing, watching TV etc). There is no medication that can reverse the effects of cataracts. Surgery remains the only way to restore good vision.

How is cataract surgery performed?Cataract surgery is one of the most common opera-tions perform in the world. It also is one of the safest and most effective types of surgery. Generally, more than 95% of cases who have had cataract surgery will attain better vision after that.

Cataract operation involves removal of the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial implant. Majority of the cataract surgeries are usually per-formed under local anesthesia as a day care proce-dure. The operation usually takes less than 30 min-utes.

The most common method of cataract surgery to-day is small incision phacoemulsification. Prior to the availability of phacoemulsification technique, extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) which in-volves making a bigger surgical incision in the eye to remove the cataract was the preferred method. Currently, ECCE is only used for selected cases such as certain subluxated cataracts.

Phacoemulsification involves the use of a thin ul-trasound probe which is inserted into the eye via a small surgical incision in the eye. The clouded lens is broken into tiny pieces using the ultrasound vibra-tions (phacoemulsify) and subsequently these frag-mented pieces are suctioned out through the same ultrasound probe. Once the cataract is removed, an artificial lens is placed into the eye (supported in a thin capsular bag). This clear artificial intraocular lens is essential to help your eye focus after surgery. The patient will not feel the new lens within the eye. Most patients need to limit their activities for only a few days to a week and recovery time is brief.

Although modern techniques have made cataract surgery a relatively safe procedure, complications can still occur. These include bleeding, infection, loss of a portion of the cataract into the eye, displace-ment of the intraocular lens, glaucoma (elevated eye pressure), and retinal detachment. Fortunately, all these complications are very uncommon and should it occur it is usually treatable.
