or me one of the best parts about traveling is coming home. I remember returning home from one of my first trips to Mexico. Though there is much to enjoy in the coun-

try down south, I was so glad when my feet touched ground back in So Cal. The words to Chuck Berry’s song came to my mind “I’m so gladI’m livin’ in the U.S.A.”

In Mark Buchanan’s book Your Church is Too Safe (Zondervan) the author describes the difference between a traveler and a tourist. Traveler literally means “one who travails,” a tourist is “one who goes in circles.”

The traveler immerses himself in the culture, learns the language and cus-toms, lives with the locals, imitates the dress, eats what’s set before him. He is gone a long time. If he ever returns, he comes back forever altered.

The tourist only passes through sampling the wares, acquiring souvenirs. He tastes more than eats what is set before him. He retreats each night to what is safe and familiar. He picks up a word here, a phrase there, but the language is a mystery to him. He is a spectator and a consumer. He returns home with an album of photos and a t-shirt, but is unchanged in any fundamental way. He’s happy to be home, just like I was returning from Mexico.

In the church there are disciples and believers. The disciple follows and imi-tates Jesus. She loses her life in order to find it. She steeps in the language and culture of Christ until his Word and world changes how she sees, thinks, dreams and lives.

A believer is a lot like the tourist. She holds certain beliefs, but how deep these go depends on the weather and her mood. She can get defensive about her beliefs, but in her honest moments wonders why they’ve made such a small difference in how she lives.

You can’t be a disciple without being a believer, but you can be a believer and not a disciple. You can say all the right things, believe all the right things, do all the right things and still not follow and imitate Jesus.

The kingdom of God is full of travelers (disciples), but I fear our churches are filled with tourists (believers) just going in circles.

Yours in partnership for the gospel,

Don’t WorryAbout a Thing.

Worry is one of those “respectable sins” that We tend to overlook or excuse, but according

to Jesus, it is a form of practical atheism...

A[ ARTICLE ]

lady visited the doctor and told him that she was feeling rather run down. As far as she could tell her “get up and go had got up and gone.” After listening and then examining his patient the doctor replied, “Madam it is my expert opinion that you are not run down, but you are wound up.”

That diagnosis describes a lot of people today, wound up in knots of anxiety and apprehension. They are worried about losing their house to the bank, their job to overseas, their sons to war, their spouse to another, their freedoms to a judge, their life to cancer, and even their salvation to sin. In fact this problem is so pervasive that some people are worried about the fact that they are not worried. While we all wrestle with worry, Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount challenges us to come to grips with it and to flat out stop it (Matt. 6:25, 34). Devoting one-seventh of the Sermon on the Mount to this subject our Lord commands us to cease and desist. This call to immediately stop worrying is an imperative to us and for us. The Lord Jesus sees worry not as an illness that needs to be treated, but a sin that needs to be repented of and stopped.

Worry is one of those “respectable sins” that we tend to overlook or excuse, but according to Jesus, it is a form of practical atheism that we ought to decry and

renounce. Anxiety is a big deal to God because it is a matter of little faith (Matt. 6:31). Therefore we need to be as quick to confront this practical atheism within the church as we are to confront the growing secularism within our society. John Wesley was right, “I can no more worry than I can curse and swear.”

In calling us to cease and desist as it regards our everyday worries our Lord Jesus furnishes us with several reasons for doing so.

That’s a Waste of Time and Energy!

The first reason is worry is fruitless (Matt. 6:27)! Worry is a waste of time and energy. Jesus in this text points out that worry doesn’t add a single hour to anyone’s life. Frankly, it is a lot of work for nothing. In fact this futile exercise makes things worse rather than better in that it leaves us unfit to deal with the situation that has us so uptight in the first place. It distracts our ability to focus, and it leaves us feeling tired and tense. Literally, worry shortens our lives rather than lengthens them. We don’t worry with our minds as much as with our stomachs, and so anxiety leads to ulcers, high blood pressure and coronary problems.

Listen! Worry doesn’t change a thing except the person who is worrying, and not

for the better. That is why when it comes to life’s pressures and problems you and I need to find something better to do than worry. Trust in God is surefooted and well-based, but worry is pointless. Someone has rightly said, “Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.”

Where’s Your Faith?

The second reason is worry is faithless (Matt. 6:30)! The worrier is someone whose faith is small. According to Jesus, the disciples were deficient in their trust

towards God. They were not reflecting on God’s past and promised faithfulness. They were not alert or aware enough of the providences of God being worked out before their very eyes in His care of the surrounding creation (Matt. 6:25-26, 28-30). As worriers they lacked faith in the faithfulness of God, and that which is not of faith is sin (Rom. 14:23; Heb. 11:6). Anxiety then is not only a waste of emotional energy it is an expression of spiritual forgetfulness and faithlessness. Anxiety envisages circumstances that may never occur or cannot be changed while at the same time forgetting truths about God’s unchanging care and character (Heb. 13:5-6, 8).

The Southern Baptist evangelist Vance Havner told the story of the lady who went to the doctor when it was a little too late to be helped. After the examination the doctor told her that there was nothing he could do for her, she would just have to trust the Lord. The lady replied, “Doctor, has it come down to that?” Havner finishes the story with the thought that it always comes down to that so why not begin with

that? The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of faith is the end of anxiety. The God we trust in through Jesus Christ is great, good, and gracious and therefore deserves more than little faith.

Who’s Your Daddy?

The third reason is worry is fatherless (Matt. 6:31-32)! Worry is the concern of the orphan. Jesus understands that an orphaned world without God and without hope scurries around in fits of anxiety worrying about stuff, but what Jesus

doesn’t understand is the anxiety of those who God has adopted into His family by matchless grace (Rom. 8:14-17). Jesus argues that with God as their Father the Christian ought not to worry. Children from caring homes with good fathers don’t worry, and neither should those belonging to God’s family (Matt. 6:9, 11). If worry has got us by the throat, it is because we have forgotten that our Father has got us by the hand (John 10:29). You and I have to realize that worry is nothing more than practical atheism, and is an affront to our Father in heaven. To worry is to slander our heavenly Father’s good name before an unbelieving world. We must cease and desist.

Thomas Watson the Puritan noted, “The name Jehovah carries majesty in it, while the name Father carries mercy in it.” Rest today in the knowledge that none other than Jehovah is your Father. Don’t worry about a thing because it is after all fruitless, faithless, and fatherless!

“Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it

doesn’t get you anywhere.”

“Whatever the offense in your life, there is an inseparable link betWeen receiving

god’s forgiveness and granting forgiveness to others.”

n the middle of a Sunday school lesson, two boys in the back of the class were arguing. The teacher stopped the class and asked what the problem was. One of the boys replied that on the way to Sunday school the other had hit him.

This is a great opportunity to teach them about forgiveness, the teacher thought. He called the two boys to the front of the class and emphasized how much God wants us to forgive each other. Then the teacher asked the all-important question.

“Brian, will you forgive Luke?”

“Sure,” Brian said. He then hauled off and punched Luke in the stomach.

“Wait a minute,” the teacher yelled, grabbing Brian by the arm. “I asked you to forgive Luke, not hit him.”

“I will forgive him,” Brian protested, “but I had to get even with him first.”

The issue of forgiveness touches us every day and in every way. Sometimes it’s

a major crisis that forces us to choose between forgiveness and unforgiveness: an unwanted divorce, termination from your job, a betrayed friendship. More often it is lesser offenses that we must deal with, such as:

• when our child doesn’t receive a coveted invitation to a birthday party

• when we aren’t selected for a leadership position in the church

• when a friend refuses to show the proper amount of concern over our problem

• when a coworker spreads a lie that keeps us from receiving a promotion.

Whatever the offense in your life, there is an inseparable link between receiving God’s forgiveness and granting forgiveness to others. It’s a matter of grace. The basis for all grace is God’s offer to release us from the consequences of our sin.

There are many reasons why we should extend that grace to others and choose forgiveness over vengeance.

I

14 KKLA Magazine Issue 10

1. Forgiveness is the only

way to settle a debt.

2. Forgiveness frees us to

get on with our lives.

3. Forgiveness is an

antidote to needless suffering.

4. Forgiveness is the obli-

gation of the forgiven.

While all four reasons are strong arguments for unconditionally forgiving another person, let’s concentrate on the third truth: Forgivness is an antidote for needless suffering.

I’ve recently been counseling with a wife who discovered her husband had been involved in an affair. She and her husband had what many would consider an ideal marriage, but one Friday afternoon her tranquil life turned into a living nightmare when she learned that her husband had been involved in a year-long romance with a mutual friend. When she confronted her husband, he first denied the relationship, then later confessed. “I don’t know if I can ever forgive him,” she told me. “I just keep picturing him and this woman in bed together. I would give anything if we could erase this past year and start over.”

But of course she can’t. The wounds of the past can never be changed. But they can be healed, and forgiveness is a procedure God has given us to accomplish that physical, emotional, and spiritual renewal in our lives. No story in human history better illustrates the process of granting forgiveness than the story of Joseph and his brothers who sold him into slavery. Through a long series of miraculous circumstances in Egypt, God elevated Joseph from slavery to becoming Pharaoh’s right-hand man. When famine struck Egypt and Canaan, Jacob, who had given his son Joseph up for dead, sent his remaining sons to purchase grain in Egypt. Little did they know that the person to whom they would make their appeal would be their own brother.

Genesis 45 records the climactic confrontation between Joseph and his brothers when, with loud weeping, Joseph declared himself to his stunned siblings: “’I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence” (45:3 NASB).

As the shock wore off, can you imagine what the brothers must have been thinking? “This is it! Surely Joseph will get even with us now!” With sweat pouring down their faces, they slowly approached their brother, certain that this was the end. Never in their wildest dreams could they have anticipated Joseph’s remarkable response:

What was Joseph’s motivation in forgiving his brothers? Why was he willing to let go of such a deep and inexcusable wrong? Joseph was a man of faith who was able to trace the hand of God in every hurt he had experienced. He could see how God had caused all things “to work together for good.” While understanding God’s sovereignty facilitated Joseph’s forgiveness, it doesn’t explain it completely.

I think Joseph had a much more “selfish” reason for releasing his desire for vengeance. He was tired of the solitary confinement that comes from bitterness. Years of estrangement had taken their toll. Joseph desperately yearned for reconciliation with his family. Notice how his pent-up emotions erupted when he finally revealed himself to his brothers: “And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard of it” (Genesis 45:2).

Such tears come only from those who are tired of rehearsing wrongs from the past and are ready to repair broken relationships. Are you tired of being emotionally bound to someone who hurt you so long ago? Do you long to be free from that bitterness that has been slowly destroying your life?

Then release your offender of his obligation, knowing that in the process you’re also releasing yourself. As Paul states in Ephesians 4:32, “be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” Your thoughts? rom the mundane to the profound moments of our lives—from waiting on traffic lights and elevators to the end

of suffering or the fulfillment of dreams—life gives us no choice but to wait. Yet patience is becoming a rare quality in today’s world. How often do we complain when something doesn’t happen on the schedule we have in mind, or when some unforeseen obstacle prevents us from moving forward?

For those of us who call upon the name of Jesus, patience is a characteristic we should cultivate. No one is born with it—just look at a newborn baby! Rather, patience is spiritual fruit, which is developed over time (Gal. 5:22-23). Without it, we’ll never become the people God desires us to be or achieve what He’s planned for us to do.

Patience Is Essential for Every Aspect of Life.

Delays. God wants us to respond with calm acceptance to moments and seasons of waiting, while trusting in His sovereignty over every situation. Though the delay may seem annoying and senseless, the Lord uses these times to mature us. One of the first lessons a young child learns is how to wait. And our displays of irritation and anger are really just adult versions of childish tantrums. Each time you feel impatience rise up in your heart, remember that this is an opportunity to choose a mature response instead of acting like a spiritual toddler.

Desires. The ability to postpone gratification is an important aspect of patience. The Lord wants us to follow biblical principles for living and align our desires with His. The next time you’re tempted to go for immediate gratification, stop and ask the Lord what He wants for you. Then wait until He gives clear direction.

KKLA Magazine Issue 10 17

Relationships. One of the words the Bible uses to describe patience is longsuffering, and sometimes that’s exactly what it takes when dealing with others. We’d like to find a verse that exempts us from having to put up with difficult people, but there isn’t one. However, there is a great description of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, and it begins like this: “Love is patient.” An integral part of love is showing forbearance toward others. Whenever you’re tempted to respond with irritation or anger, just remember all the times the Lord has patiently loved you.

Hardships. Most of our unwanted delays are trivial, but sometimes they involve events of tremendous significance. How do you respond when a medical condition shows no sign of improvement, a relationship remains strained, or unemployment continues? One sign of spiritual maturity is the ability to calmly abide under stress, hardship, or suffering. This doesn’t necessarily mean we feel less pressure, but in the midst of the difficulty, we know God is working for our good—stretching our faith and molding us into the likeness of His Son. It’s not hopeless resignation, but firm faith in the Lord’s good purpose for allowing the trial.

Prayer. God rarely works according to our timetable. In desperation, we may even give Him deadlines, and if He doesn’t come through when we expect Him to, we take matters into our own hands. I wonder how many times we miss God’s blessings because we refuse to wait for Him. Whenever He delays, remember that He’s always faithful and will provide for us in the best possible way at the perfect time.

What Does Patience Look Like?Perhaps the easiest way to understand patience is to see it demonstrated in someone’s life.David was a man who learned to wait. When he was just a teenager, the Lord chose him to be the next king of Israel (1 Sam. 16:13). But when King Saul became jealous and tried to kill him (1 Sam. 19:10), David was forced to live as a fugitive, running for his life. Although God had promised him the kingdom, he spent many years hiding in the wilderness.

During this time, David encountered two opportunities to take matters into his own hands. Saul and his army followed a lead that placed David in the region of Engedi. At one point, Saul chose a cave as a place to relieve himself, not realizing that David and his men happened to be hiding in the inner recesses of that very cave. This looked like the perfect occasion for David to kill Saul and take over the kingdom. In fact, his men thought it was the Lord’s way of finally bringing David to the throne. So he sneaked up to Saul but simply cut off the edge of his robe, later explaining to his men that he couldn’t kill the Lord’s anointed king. When Saul finally left the cave, David called out to him and displayed the robe’s edge as evidence that he was still loyal (1 Sam. 24:1-22).

The second occasion is recorded in 1 Samuel 26:1-25. This time David and one of his men actually entered Saul’s camp as he and his army slept. Once more, it looked as though God had handed David his enemy, but once again, the younger man refused to take Saul’s life. Instead, he took only the king’s spear and water jug. After leaving the camp, David called to the commander of Saul’s army, showed the two articles he’d taken, and reprimanded him for not adequately guarding his king.

David patiently waited for God through years of unfair treatment, misunderstanding, exile, and discomfort. What character traits enabled him to respond with such amazing longsuffering and endurance?

Faith. David knew that God would give him the kingdom, even when he saw no evidence to support his belief. If the Lord instantly provided us with everything He promises, there would be no reason to walk by faith. When His timing doesn’t match our expectations, we have a choice: Will we step ahead and rely on ourselves, or will we wait for Him? David chose to trust God’s timing rather than his own, regardless of the consequences. He may not have understood why he had to wait, but he knew the Lord would fulfill His promise in due time.

On June 19th 2011 I went on a horse ride alone. Little did I know that this simple horse ride just outside my backyard would change the course of my life. I was bucked off my horse and shattered my right leg. My busy life as a business owner, host of a Christian radio show, mother, and active participant on numerous council boards, and competitive dancer was suddenly altered.

From a running pace, to a dependant halt, I was humbled by being reliant upon my husband and daughter to assist me in activities I took for grant-ed each and every day. Things as simple as taking a shower, driving, carrying anything or even put-ting on my socks.

This is not a distant trial I have faced as I am currently enduring this radical shift as I will now soon begin to drive and walk within the next few months, Christ has taught me, and is teaching me the meaning of endurance through humility, faith, hope, and love.

The writer of Hebrews tells us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the certainty of things unseen. We all hope for things we do not see, whether it’s a better job, marriage, healing of an illness or injury, or countless other aspira-tions. Where does our assurance come from? The answer is Jesus Christ.

Does this assurance imply health, perfect mon-etary success or marriage? No. Our assurance is that Christ rose from the dead and we do not need to suffer for our wrongs in separation from God.

That God causes all things to work for the good of those who love him and are called according to His purposes. That He promises to take care of our needs if we seek His righteousness and His kingdom and not our righteousness or our pride-ful pursuits.

This hope gives us confidence, which develops faith, which gives us endurance and persever-ance, knowing that any trial we may be going through cannot be compared to the glory we will have with Him when he calls us home. That He wants to showcase us as His personal ambassa-dors to show the world who He is, and this is seen most in our hope, joy, confidence, and assurance of our hope in and through these types of trials.

We will receive the crown of life if we finish strong in this race. Our minds and attitudes drive our behavior. Going from, “I’m broken,” to “I’m heal-ing everyday”, is a matter of perspective through God’s eyes. Only God has complete control of our lives and the timeframe of events.

These are just a few of the things I am pursuing to not only know, but to live in the reality of. Join me each Saturday from 4-5pm on KKLA to learn and explore all that God has for us to walk in.

Lend Your Support To Those Who Need ItPartner with Union Rescue Mission’s Hope Gardens Family Center

Written By Susan Fries

Many know me as the Termite Lady, Owner of Ecola Services Alternative Termite and Pest Control. Ecola has strived to exceed the expectations of our customers and our industry by offering exceptional customer service and alternative methods that help protect the home, family and environment. Lately it seems hard to find a company you can trust to really put the client above themselves but there is hope. We at Ecola recently had an amazing experience in seeing service above

expectations when we held our 2012 company meeting at Hope Gardens. Union Rescue Mission’s Hope Gardens Family Center, located near the Angeles National Forest, offers mothers and children experiencing homelessness the safety, counseling, training, encouragement, and the real help they need to escape homelessness forever. No child should be raised on the dangerous, unforgiving streets of Los Angeles.

By having Ecola’s 2012 company meeting at Hope Gardens where we experienced service beyond our expectations, we were able to not only be served, but we were able to use the cost for facilities as a donation to their notable cause. As all of us at Ecola strive for our mission of exceeding the expectations of our customers by using environmentally smart products to protect the health of you and your family, we find it essential to partner with companies and organizations who are going above and beyond the call of duty.

Ecola’s desire is to reach significance by using our success to help and change lives. To learn more about Ecola, my radio show, or ministries that you can support visit my website www.suefries.com.

have pondered long and hard the question of why people turn to God. I remember a woman from Romania telling me that she was raised in a staunchly atheistic environment. They were not

allowed to even mention the name of God in their household, lest they be overheard and their entire education denied. After she came to the United States, I happened to be her patient when I was recovering from back surgery. When I had the privilege of praying with her one day, she said as she wiped away her tears, “Deep in my heart I have always believed there was a God. I

just didn’t know how to find him.”

This sentiment is repeated scores of times. More recently, I had the great privilege of meeting with two very key people in an avowedly atheistic country. After I finished praying, one of them said, “I have never prayed in my entire life, and I have never heard anyone else pray. This is a first for me. Thank you for teaching me how to pray.” It was obvious that even spiritual hungers that have been suppressed for an entire lifetime are in evidence when in a situation where there is possible fulfillment.

Our Hungering Spirit for God

“God alone can weave a pattern from the disparate threads of our lives—whether suffering, success, joy, or heartache—and

fashion a magnificent design.”

Although I agree that the problem of pain may be one of the greatest challenges to faith in God, I dare suggest that it is the problem of pleasure that more often drives us to think of spiritual things. Sexuality, greed, fame, and momentary thrills are actually the most precarious attractions

in the world. Pain forces us to accept our finitude. It can breed cynicism, weariness, and fatigue in just living. Pain sends us in search of a greater power. Introspection, superstition, ceremony, and vows can all come as a result of pain. But disappointment in pleasure is a completely different thing. While pain can often be seen as a means to a greater end, pleasure is seen as an end in itself. And

when pleasure has run its course, a sense of despondency can creep into one’s soul that may often lead to self-destruction. Pain can often be temporary; but disappointment in pleasure gives rise to emptiness—not just for a moment, but for life. There can seem to be no reason to life, no preconfigured

purpose, if even pleasure brings no lasting fulfillment.

This is why I believe that the intertwining of pain with pleasure is at the root of the human dilemma and at the core of the hungering spirit. People in pain may look for comfort and explanations. People disappointed in pleasure look for purpose. But this is where, I believe, the West has lost its way. In our boredom, we may

search for an escape in the strange or the distorted, while God has revealed himself in the person of Jesus Christ.

A Design in MindOnly in the Judeo-Christian worldview is every person understood to be created in God’s image, for God himself is a person. Likewise, each person has relational priorities that are implicitly built in, not by nature but by God’s design. Consider the tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Even in that stoic culture, where community rises above everything else, each one who wept was grieving the loss of their own loved ones: They were not grieving just for the total loss of life but

also for their personal loss. This is real. It is not imaginary. We stand before the individual graves of the ones we love more often than we stand before a graveyard in general.

But there is more. Personhood transcends mere DNA. There is essential worth to each person. In Christianity, the essence of each and every person and the individual reality of each life is sacred. It is sacred because intrinsic value has been given to us by our Creator, who has revealed himself in the starry skies and upon a nail-scarred cross.

Some years ago, I was visiting a place known for making the best wedding saris in the world. They were the producers of saris rich in gold and silver threads, resplendent with an array of colors. With such intricacy of detail, I expected to see some elaborate system of machines that would boggle the mind in production. But this image could not have been further from the real scene.

Each sari was made individually by a father and son team. The father sat above the son on a platform, surrounded by several spools of thread that he would gather into his fingers. The son had only one task. At a nod from his father, he would move the shuttle from one side to the other and back again. This would then be repeated for hundreds of hours, until a magnificent pattern began to emerge.

The son certainly had the easier task. He was only to move at the father’s nod. But making use of these efforts, the father was working to an intricate end. All along, he had the design in his mind and was bringing the right threads together.

The more I reflect on my own life and interact with others, I am fascinated to see the design God has for each one of us individually, if we would only respond. The truth is that I have known people who in the peak of their success have turned to God, and I have known others, drowning in pain and defeat, who seek God for an answer. Either extreme leaves haunting questions. God alone knows how we will respond to either.

God has created us for his purpose, and relationship and worship are built into this design. God alone can weave a pattern from the disparate threads of our lives—whether suffering, success, joy, or heartache—and fashion a magnificent design. Perhaps today, if you will stop and reflect on it, you will see that He is seeking your hungering spirit.

The more I reflect on my own life and interact with others, I am fascinated to see the design

OVERCOMINGDISCOURAGEMENTThe Apostle Paul knew that God had been his help in the past and would be his help in the present and the future! Paul held firm to his understanding that God could change any seemingly impossible situation.

KKLA Magazine Issue 10 33

iscouragement is one of the deepest struggles I have had to overcome. I’ve had many

surgeries through the years, but the last one on my back

was probably the most difficult. One would think it would get better with each surgery, but actually it gets worse. I felt like a burden to my wife and to my church, and often I thought that I should just resign and let the church find a healthier pastor.

D

34 KKLA Magazine Issue 10

My thoughts were not about copping out or quitting; rather, it was because I believed that the congregation deserves the very best. And being so sick all the time, I was not sure that I was the best. I had a discussion with the pastors and with the board after my last surgery, and they said they would take me as I am. I really had to wrestle with God over this because I questioned, “How do I serve God and the people with the strength needed when I don’t feel good? I will probably have maybe four or five good days out of the year. I’m not moody or emotional; my body just hurts.

The Lord has taught me over the years that if I could just have the strength to get out of bed, and then step into the shower, by

the time I’m in my car driving to church, I would feel better. I am reminded that His strength is made perfect in my weakness. I really have to live one day at a time, but it weighs on me. It affects my outlook on life, and it is very discouraging. My friend Joni Erickson Tada said that discouragement is like a handicap that no one can see. Joni is in a wheelchair. Everyone sees her in it, and therefore everyone has different expectations for her; but no one sees my struggles, and I don’t think people are ever going to understand my condition. So I have settled it in my heart that my discouragements are really God’s opportunities to shine and be glorified in my life. So I concentrate on my teaching, and I surround myself with great people to take care of the rest. When I do that, I feel that I have really done my job and am doing what the Lord has asked of me. So now I’m content with who I am.

Have you ever been pressed beyond measure? I have, and I know that I am not alone.

One of the most telling stories in the Bible about overcoming discouragement is of the apostle Paul’s journey to share the gospel of Christ. Both historians and theologians credit Paul as being the most important person in the role of spreading Christianity throughout the world. But Paul had much to overcome. He spent 18 months at the church of Corinth, building up those believers in the knowledge of Christ and instructing them to live by faith and look for His coming. However, Paul was deeply troubled with some of the teaching, doctrine and practices that had developed in the church, which led to friction between him and some of the Corinthian believers. With his first letter to the Corinthian church, Paul spent a

great deal of time correcting errors in the fellowship. Upon receiving his letter, some of those in the church began to turn on him. They spoke against him; they challenged his authority and became spiteful toward him.

How many of us have been in a work or personal situation in which we were the target of another’s opposition, even when we were doing right? It is natural to feel discouraged. But Paul refused to live by feelings alone—he chose to live his life by faith and allow the Holy Spirit to empower every situation that came his way. He continued to love the church at Corinth, and his faith gave him the strength to press on. It’s hard to envision the pressure and stress Paul was under. But the Holy Spirit bore witness to his situation, of which we read in 2 Corinthians 1:8-10: “We were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from

His circumstances were beyond his own ability to change, but they were not beyond God’s,

so he rested in God.

KKLA Magazine Issue 10 35

so great a death, and does deliver us.”

Paul had learned the importance of trusting in God. His circumstances were beyond his own ability to change, but they were not beyond God’s, so he rested in God.

We read that his strength was exhausted; he even said that he had a sentence of death within himself. In other words, there was a contract on his head. Consider this disheartening partial list of the things he faced: There were 40 men who took a vow that they would kill Paul before they would eat or drink anything; he was beaten at Lystra; he was chased out of Ephesus and almost killed because of a riot; he was rejected in almost every city he visited. Yet, in the midst of all these trials and more, Paul stood strong in his faith. Paul knew that God was able to raise the dead, so what could he ultimately fear from man? In each harrowing situation, Paul knew that God had been his help in the past and would be his help in the present and the future!

Paul held firm to his understanding that God could change any seemingly impossible situation.

Today, maybe you find yourself at that very same place. You’re exhausted. You have tried to do everything you can, but you have come to the end of yourself. The relationship is over. The love is gone; and though you desire to see God work, it seems impossible. I challenge you to remember that God is able to raise the dead. He is able to restore your heart; or as Ezekiel said, He is able to give you a new heart (see Ezek. 36:26). He is able to change the situation you are in if you look to Him.

soar to your best health – and that can make an immediate difference.

KKLA: Here we are in 2012 with people’s health under siege more than ever before in the history of mankind! With your 30 plus years of experience in working with people with all kinds of concerns, what do you see as the top factor that we all need to know about to enjoy life more?

Dr. Bob: That question reminds me of the famous quote, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything at all.” No amount of money, fame or celebrity status can make up for a poor quality of life. So right out of the box, I’d focus on digestion for literally everyone.

KKLA: With all the health concerns out there, why do you consider digestion to be so important?

Dr. Bob: Good, solid digestive support is the basis for ALL good health. If you can’t digest your food properly, you will be unable to extract many valuable nutrients from food. Even the best food will rot in your stomach if you are unable to digest it well.

One of the “high” signs that your digestion needs support is if you experience occasional acid indigestion. Most people do not know that the human body was originally engineered to eat only raw food which has all of its enzymes intact. In current times, we are all eating mostly cooked food (which demolishes the raw enzymes so they become inactive) and thus, many people experience digestive stress. To immediately support the overall health of the body, all you need is a simple but effective digestive aid, such as digestive enzymes and HCl. You simply take them after every meal that has cooked food.

KKLA: So what you are saying is that eating any cooked food - even good cooked food - without digestive enzymes can age you faster?

Dr. Bob: That’s right. One study in particular strongly suggests this. To solve this problem, years ago as a clinical nutritionist, I began recommending natural source HCl to my clients which I found made a significant difference in their digestive health. I also insist that HCl sources do not have undesirable excipients or other chemical additives.

But HCl is not the only factor to support great digestive health. Pancreatic enzymes are also critically needed to digest protein, fat and carbohydrates. To solve this problem for my clients, I began recommending plant-based enzymes to my clients for comprehensive support of the main three classes of digestion. Once again, I always prefer sources without the use of undesirable excipients. I found that

plant-based enzymes made a huge difference for my clients’ digestive health.

KKLA: You’ve mentioned excipients twice now. What exactly are they?

Dr. Bob: Excipients are mostly non-food or non-nutritive agents used to process and hold nutrients in a capsule or tablet. In my opinion, most excipients are too questionable and compromising to be used. Unfortunately, their use is common in the nutritional product industry.

KKLA: So you’re saying that the average nutritional product that I might buy out there may have these questionable excipients that are not even part of the formula?

Dr. Bob: That’s right. This is really an important issue. Most people don’t realize that they may be taking a product with a great nutrient such as rhodiola, but the rest of the product may contain an undesirable excipient such as magnesium stearate which is immune compromising!

KKLA: I see your point. The “junk” excipients may be eliminating the majority of the benefits of the rest of the product! So this may be why I might take one digestive product and get nothing out of it, but when I

One of the “high” signs that your digestion needs support is if you experience

occasional acid indigestion.

take a better made product, then I can really get the results.

Dr. Bob: Yes, I agree. I recall one recent case where a man named Steve had been using an excipient-free HCl product and was doing much better overall. His daughter was very excited since nothing else had really helped her father’s digestion.

Then, the benefits seemed to stop. His daughter finally figured out the dilemma. Her father had gone to the store to buy a different product – but it contained a large amount of magnesium stearate (an excipient that creates immune stress). When he switched back to an excipient-free HCl, his progress continued again.

It is possible that Steve experienced this big difference simply based on whether or not the product contained undesirable excipients that were stressing his immune system.

KKLA: Interesting story! Now how can our readers get their own personal digestive health questions answered?

Dr. Bob: I would be glad to answer personal

questions about digestive health right on the air during the HealthLine radio show. Just tune in to KKLA Saturdays at 9am. They can call for the show times in their area. If they would like to speak with someone immediately, they may feel free to talk with one of our trained customer service representatives at 800-370-3447 at any time during the week.

America’s financial crisis began with home mortgages. Your personal financial crisis may center on this issue as well. Millions of people borrowed heavily to pur-chase their homes or cash out equity during the real estate boom of the past decade. Second mortgages or HELOCs (Home Equity Line of Credit) were a major part of this borrowing “bonanza,” allowing homeowners to tap the maximum loan potential in their properties.

We all know what happened next. Home prices dropped drastically, putting heavily mortgaged homeowners “underwater” as they now owed more than their homes were worth.

As the mort-gage meltdown continues, many homeowners have attempted loan modifications to restructure payments and/or reduced principle owed. Now lenders have been moving much more quickly to settle second mortgages and HELOCs! If you have this kind of additional loan against your prop-erty, now is the time to remove this burden. Here’s why:

Second mortgages and HELOCs are subordi-nate to first mortgages, meaning upon sale of a home, these loans only get paid off after a first mortgage has been paid off in full. Even after foreclosure, there is frequently not enough money realized in an eventual sale to cover existing first mortgages, let alone any second mortgages.

Second mortgages can be written off in certain types of bankruptcy. That means troubled homeowners can walk away from these loans with a judge’s blessing Here are some settlement success stories from the files of Financial Recovery USA:

Homeowner A$143,851: 2nd Mortgage Balance$21,577: Settlement Amount$122,274: Amount Saved$0: New 2nd Mortgage

Homeowner B$91,658: 2nd Mortgage Balance$9,165: Settlement Amount$82,493: Amount Saved$0: New 2nd Mortgage

Settling a second mortgage or HELOC means negotiating a payoff amount for less than what is owed on the loan. Homeowners across the country are settling for 5% to 20% of what they owe on their second mortgages and HELOCs. In some cases, homeowners are able to additionally negotiate a payment plan to pay back the new lower balance in regular installments.

Here’s why you should arrange a settlement of your second mortgage or HE-LOC:

You get to keep your home. Set-tling a second

mortgage or HELOC has nothing to do with foreclosure or eviction. And relieving this debt puts you in a stronger position to make pay-ments on your first mortgage and other financial obligations.

You will be closer to regaining an equity position on home. Less debt against your home reduces your likelihood of being underwater.

You will uphold your Christian values. An hon-orable debt settlement is always superior to not fulfilling your responsibilities.

Settlement of second mortgages is a strat-egy that applies in many distressed property situations, but it is not applicable in all cases. Financial Recovery USA will determine if second mortgage settlement is applicable in your case. If so, we will go to work to win you the best settlement possible. There is $1 trillion in sec-ond mortgages sitting on the books in America right now. Lenders are motivated to relieve this difficult debt. Take advantage of this motivation by calling the expert in second mortgage settle-ment, Financial Recovery USA at 800-385-0745.

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Eliminate Your Second Mortgageby Paul Karpf, Founder, Financial Recovery USA

Sensitivity. God is always faithful to correct us when we jump ahead of His will, but the question is, Are we paying attention? The more closely we walk with the Lord, the better we can hear His voice and slow down to keep in step with Him.

Wisdom. When a pathway out of their renegade lifestyle presented itself, David’s men saw it as an open door from the Lord. But David looked beyond the circumstance into the heart of God. He could discern that

their advice did not align with the Lord’s will. How could he selfishly take a life in order to further his own? When we look at situations from a biblical perspective, wisdom guards our path and keeps us from many foolish choices.

Obedience. To kill the anointed king of Israel would be a sin, and David was determined to obey the Lord’s commands, even if it meant that his fugitive lifestyle would continue. The path of obedience is not always easy. In fact, it can be quite costly. To say yes to God could very well mean you have to say no to what you want.

Courage. Waiting for the Lord’s timing takes courage, especially when it affects those who are close to you. When David decided to wait upon the Lord, his men had to suffer the consequences along with him. It meant they would have to continue running and hiding from Saul. You can be sure they were all tired of living as outlaws. But instead of opting for a quick fix, David had the strength and courage to take a stand for God’s way and, in the process, protected his men from making a tragic mistake.

Perseverance. David was willing to endure

persecution and mistreatment for as long as the Lord deemed necessary. Knowing that God was in control of the length and intensity of his trial—and that He was working according to His good purpose—the future king chose to stay in a difficult situation instead of opting for the easy way out. Taking forbidden shortcuts to escape prolonged difficulty or suffering is never the answer to our dilemmas. The only way to receive the full benefits God has for us is to trust Him through the delay and wait patiently for Him to act on our behalf.

Forbearance. Perhaps the most surprising example of patience was David’s forbearance toward Saul, the one who was mistreating him. He didn’t take revenge, but instead approached him with love and respect. Maybe you have a “Saul” in your life who is causing you difficulty. Ask the Lord to give you a forbearing spirit like David’s so that you can see the person’s value and treat him or her with honor.

The benefits of developing patience are numerous. It enriches your relationships, transforms your character, brings peace and joy even in irritating or trying situations, and equips you to effectively serve Christ. I’m sure David couldn’t see all that God was doing in his life during his long wait, but you can be sure of this: David would not be remembered with honor as the renowned king of Israel if he’d taken the fast route to the throne.

Trust God when He puts you in the waiting room. He knows what He’s doing.

Cont’d from Willing to Wait...p 17

The path of obedience is not always easy. In fact, it can be quite costly. To say yes to God could very well mean you have to say

no to what you want.
