2008 Women’s Team Making Their Place in KU HistoryIt has been a banner year for the 2008 Kansas women’s track and fi eld team. In what may be one of the best seasons in team history, the women have recorded their highest fi nishes in KU women’s history at each postseason meet in which they have competed this year - the Big 12 Indoor Championships (third), the NCAA Indoor Championships (tenth) and the Big 12 Outdoor Championships (fourth).

Jayhawks Land 27 on Academic All-Big 12 ListsAmong the 234 student-athletes selected, Kansas boasted the second-most representatives of any team on the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 teams. Led by junior Eric Fattig’s 4.0 GPA, the 27 KU student-athletes were bested only by Nebraska’s 38. The Jayhawks placed 14 women and six men on the conference’s fi rst teams and added another fi ve men and two women on the second teams. It marked the second selection for senior Egor Agafonov, juniors Emily Reimer and Sha’Ray Butler, sophomore Megan James and Fattig. Seniors Ashley Brown, Libby Harmon, Paul Hefferon and Colby Wissel earned their way onto the list for the third time.

Pair of Track Seniors Named ‘Athletes of the Year’Seniors Kate Sultanova and Egor Agafonov recieved the highest of accolades given by the University of Kansas each year at the Jayhawk Senior and Scholar Banquet. The two were named the 2008 Athletes of the Year, along with men’s basketball player Russell Robinson, football’s James McClinton and tennis’ Elizaveta Avdeeva. The unprecedented fi ve recipients were honored for their elite combination of academic and athletic success.

Anderson Tops 30-Year-Old KU RecordFor 30 years Sheila Calmese held the school record in the women’s 100-meter dash. Her time of 11.44 at the 1978 Arkansas Relays was only matched once. Natasha Shafer was able to equal the feat at the 1994 Kansas Relays. However, during the fi nals of the event at the 2008 Kansas Relays, junior Nickesha Anderson broke her third school record of the 2008 season. Her time of 11.23 is now the Kansas standard in the women’s 100-meter dash.

Agafonov Still PerfectSenior Egor Agafonov, after defending his indoor NCAA weight throw national championship, has now won in each meet in which he has competed - a perfect 10-for-10 in 2008. He won all fi ve of his competitions in the weight throw and has claimed victories in his fi rst fi ve hammer throws of the outdoor season, including his third straight Big 12 title in the hammer throw May 16 in Boulder.

Trimble Sets Meet Record in Collegiate DebutFreshman Iain Trimble set a meet record in the javelin on his fi rst collegiate toss at the Missouri Relays. Trimble’s regional-qualifying toss of 68.04 meters (223-03) broke the previous record set last year by Marcin Kazubowki of Northern Iowa by nearly fi ve feet. After his Jayhawk debut, the Overbrook, Kan., native ranked fourth all-time in Kansas history in the event. Trimble will not compete for the rest of the season due to injury.

Jayhawks Lead Big 12 in Indoor Honors Kansas led the Big 12 with three athletes garnering four Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors during the indoor season. Senior pole vaulter Kate Sultanova (Feb. 5 and 12) joined Loren Groves of Kansas State as the only athletes to win the honor twice. Sophomore Jordan Scott (pole vault) helped KU sweep the award for the week of Feb. 12 as he and Sultanova (pole vault) both earned the award. Junior Nickesha Anderson (sprints) won on Feb. 19 to mark the third straight week in which KU was rewarded by the Big 12 Conference.

Anderson Sprints Into Indoor Record BooksJunior transfer Nickesha Anderson turned heads with her historic 2008 indoor season. In all fi ve of her 60-meter dash fi nals, she tied or broke the Kansas record. After breaking the KU record in the 200-meter dash, she tied or rebroke her mark on six occasions. Anderson has also set the school standard in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at Anshutz Pavilion.

Kansas, Baysinger and the 600 Meter-Run Senior Matt Baysinger ran to a fi nish of 1:20.08 in the inaugural 600-meter run at Anschutz Pavilion. Baysinger’s time is the fastest known 600 meters in Kansas history. In 2007, Baysinger ran the event at the Illini Classic in a time of 1:17.48, but the mark was deemed unoffi cial due to a timing error.

Baysinger Appointed Vice Chair of Division I National SAACSenior student-athlete Matt Baysinger was appointed Vice Chair of the Division I National Student Athlete Advisory Committee during the NCAA Convention January 10 - 14 in Nashville, Tenn. He will preside as vice chair until January 2009, when he will assume the position of chair of the NCAA Division I National SAAC for one year. Baysinger was appointed as the Big 12 Conference’s representative to the NCAA SAAC in July 2007. “SAAC has provided me an opportunity to demonstrate my leadership capabilities and gain knowledge about the intricacies of intercollegiate athletics,” said Baysinger, a native of Overland Park, Kan.

Kansas Track and Field Announces 2008 Team CaptainsFour men and fi ve women at the University of Kansas were named team captains for the 2008 track and fi eld season on Jan. 18. This is the third time Harmon has been selected as a team captain and it also marked the second selection for Baysinger, Brown, Butler, Hefferon and McGregor. Harmon is the fi rst KU athlete to be a three-time captain since Scott Huffman (1985-1988) and is one of two women to receive the honor on three occasions. Rebecca McGranahan (1981-1983) was a team captain for the fi rst three years in which the women’s team began naming captains.

COACHING STAFF Since taking the reigns of the track and field and cross country teams at the University of Kansas, Stanley Redwine has found success in leaps and bounds. As he enters his eighth year at the helm, Redwine, his staff and his teams continue to establish their marks in the lore of Jayhawk history, shattering school records and adding several All-Americans to the illustrious luminaries of Kansas’ storied past. Judging by his results, both as a coach and as an athlete, this path looks to continue into the future. In Redwine’s first seven seasons, 32 Kansas student-athletes have achieved 61 All-America honors and the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 67 school records and crack the KU all-time top-five list in more than 70 events. At Kansas, he has coached seven national champions in six different events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Throughout Redwine’s tenure, his teams have also shown great success in the classroom. In the past two seasons alone, the cross country teams have supplied 21 members to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, while the track and field teams have contributed 45 to the same list. Doug Clark is in his eighth year as an assistant cross country coach and middle distance/distance coach for the track team. Throughout Clark’s seven-year tenure, the Jayhawks have produced All-American athletes in the 1,500-meter run (two), Mile (two), 3,000-meter run (one), 3,000-meter steeplechase (one), 5,000-meter run (two), and distance medley relay (four) as well as an additional ten NCAA qualifiers in cross country and track. In that period, the team has also made major revisions to the school’s all-time performance lists including school records in the men’s and women’s 1,000-meter run, women’s 1,500-meter run, men’s 3,000-meter run and the men’s and women’s distance medley relays. Most recently, in 2007, Clark led junior Colby Wissel to the the indoor conference championship and All-America honors in the 3,000-meter run. Wissel also broke the school record in the event, topping a mark that had been set by another of Clark’s athletes (Benson Chesang in 2005). Elisha Brewer enters her fourth year as the sprints and hurdles coach. Brewer tutored two All-Americans, Julius Jiles and Ashley Brown, in 2007. Jiles finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (13.95) and Brown, who set three school hurdles records in 2007, placed 10th in the 400-meter hurdles (57.15) at the NCAA Championships. With the honor, Brown became the first 400-meter All-American hurdler in school history. Additionally under Brewer, sophomore Victoria Howard set the outdoor 200-meter dash school record (24.03) last season. Tom Hays enters his fourth season as the vertical jumps coach at his alma mater. Hays’ athletes made a clean sweep of the outdoor Big 12 pole vault titles as KU boasted both the men’s and women’s champions. Freshman Jordan Scott also won the men’s indoor conference championship in the pole vault as well and was named the 2007 Big 12 Indoor Freshman Performer of the Year and the 2007 Big 12 Outdoor Freshman Co-Perfomer of the Year. Scott became the first male in school history to recieve either distinction. Also under Pate’s guidance, junior Kate Sultanova earned All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault. Andy Kokhanovsky is entering his third year as a member of the Kansas track and field coaching staff, serving as the throws coach. Throughout Kokhanovsky’s first two seasons in Lawrence, his athletes have experienced an incredible amount of success. In that span, his athletes have garnered 11 All-America honors, six conference championships and one national championship - Egor Agafonov in the weight throw in 2007. Two-time National Assistant Coach of the Year, Wayne Pate is in his fi rst season as the horizontal jumps coach for the Jayhawks. He brings more than 26 years of coaching experience to the Kansas staff in which he has coached 46 All-Americans and seven national champions. Pate spent nine years (1998-2007) at Indiana University where he worked as an associate head coach since 2004 and served as the interim head coach for the Hoosiers last season. Under his guidance, 22 Indiana athletes became Big Ten champions.
