Haiti

continues

Due to continued publicity and efforts by club mem-bers, the fundraising cam-paign to feed starving chil-dren in Haiti has been going strong.

More than $3,800 has been accumulated and donated to our club on behalf of the Haiti project.

The club is partnering with Jack Reynolds of Fountain Hills, who founded the non-profit organization known as Free the Kids. The group is designed to financially sup-port the school and orphan-age in Haiti known as Pwoje Espwa (Project Hope).

Reynolds’ brother-in-law, Catholic priest Fr. Marc Boisvert, operates Pwoje Espwa, which was exten-sively damaged this fall by Hurricane Matthew.

Club President Ken Brown is hopeful the overall cam-paign can raise $30,000 in donations and grants to feed 350 hungry children in Haiti for one year.

“All the money will go into a restricted fund at Free the Kids and can’t be used for any other purpose except to buy food and transport it to where these children are,” Brown said.

good year for blood

donations.

Our club, in conjunc-

tion with the Town of

Fountain Hills and Unit-

ed Blood Services,

coordinates five com-

munity blood drives

here a year.

The last drive of 2016

was held in November.

The five drives this

past year collected an

incredible total of 81.6

gallons of blood!

Club leaders thank

Paul Appeldorn and

Dr. Liz Smith for coor-

dinating the blood

drives this past year;

thanks to Sofrita and

Little Caesars for their

continuing support;

and thanks to the Town

of Fountain Hills and

the Community Center

staff for their incredi-

ble sponsorship.

A big thanks, also, to

the many folks who

have donated blood

this past year. An in-

credible amount of

lives have been saved

because of these ef-

forts.

Drives for 2017 in-

clude Jan. 20-21; March

31 and April 1; June 2-

3; August 18-19; and

November 17-18.

Can you find the 10 differences between these two pictures? Jon

“One More” Geller found himself on the other side of the lens at the

most recent community blood drive, as coordinator Paul Appeldorn

captured the moment on film. Or digitally. Thanks for giving blood,

Jon, and thanks Paul for telling Jon he had to pose for “one more”

photograph. Oh, the bloody irony of it all...

Kiwanian Craig Gildersleeve rolled up his sleeve to give blood.

Fellow Kiwanians:

Our club is linking arms with the Sunset Kiwanis club to form a new club satellite. This is a new venture that

Kiwanis International is encouraging clubs to consider to provide a new experience of Kiwanis for people who

have a career and can’t meet in a conventional club setting. It is designed to appeal to a younger clientele.

Members of this club satellite will be empowered to meet at times that are convenient for them at a venue

that suits them and they may choose to develop their own fund-raising projects or get involved in some of

ours. They will be members of either the Sunset or Noon Kiwanis club, depending on who recruits them to

join Kiwanis. But they will not be expected to be active in either of our traditional club settings because the

goal is for them to develop a new Kiwanis experience that suits their schedules and interests.

Predictably, many members of the club satellite will be younger than those in either of our traditional clubs,

which is really the point. Kiwanis International realizes the need to provide an experience of Kiwanis that ap-

peals to younger adults and suits them because so many of our traditional clubs are showing their age, literal-

ly. So this is an exciting new development for our club and provides an opportunity for Sunset and Noon Ki-

wanis to work together to foster this new satellite experience.

If you know people in town who don’t have an interest in the traditional Kiwanis experience, this club satel-

lite could be just the ticket for them. Please encourage them to contact me or invite them to come to one of our

regular meetings or simply give me their contact information and I will get in touch with them. We are excited

to be a part of sponsoring this new club satellite!

We have five new members who have submitted applications and payment to join our Noon Kiwanis club

this month. Plus there are several more people who have expressed strong interest in joining our club or who

want to become an active part of the new club satellite. So we are well on our way to meeting the goal I have

set as President of adding 20 new members to our club by May 31, 2017!

A WORD FROM PRESIDENT KEN BROWN

Exciting development, more

Who better to recruit into the Noon

Kiwanis Club than your spouse?

President Ken Brown did just that,

as wife Margie was inducted into

the club Dec. 1. Margie works at the

law office of Tait Elkie and sings in

the Fountain Hills Presbyterian

Church Choir. We welcome Margie

as the newest member of our club!

Two fun fundraisers bring $$$ These past few weeks have brought us two annual fund-

raisers that help replenish our annual budget to be used

for service projects, grants, scholarships, etc. Our Hal-

loween fundraiser garnered a new record of $1400,

nearly doubling what was budgeted. The November

Fountain Festival food booth brought in approximately

$6600, once again above the budgeted amount. Fea-

tured on this page are pictures from both fundraisers.

Special thanks to our Aktion Club as well as our Build-

ers and K-Kids members for their assistance!

Another tie? No, it wasn’t Father’s Day, it was a special award

given to immediate past president Mike Scharnow

by Kiwanis International and club President Ken

Brown to recognize Scharnow’s recruiting effort the

past few years. “The Formula” is KI’s latest attempt

to increase membership across the globe and

strengthen existing clubs. Scharnow has recruited

15 new Kiwanians over the years, and President

Brown is urging members to reach his goal of add-

ing 20 new members to the club this year. We can

do it!
