Pediatric Trauma . . .

. . . Our Major Focus

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Its Beginning . . .

Recognizing the serious need for education and training in the areas of

pediatric trauma and injury prevention, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation established the Pediatric

Trauma Program in 1994.

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Our Mission . . .

"To develop local projects, which will

reduce the number of children in our

district who are killed or injured by

trauma."

Why Pediatric Trauma?

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Why PTP?

• Unintentional injury remains the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S.

• Unintentional injury kills more kids every year than any other cause – including disease, homicide and suicide!

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Why PTP?

• These injuries cost society $157 billion1 annually!

• 90% of these injuries could be prevented!

1 Includes direct medical costs, future earnings lost and lost quality of life

What is PediatricEmergency Medicine?

• Developed in 1992

• 1,446 PEM physicians (as of 2008)

• One qualified PEM physician for every 22,000 children visiting the ER!

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

PEM Physicians . . .

• Specialize in the care of acutely ill or injured children and teens

• Treat a wide range of medical emergencies that require immediate attention and are often life threatening

• Meet the unique medical needs of children, including giving medications and using equipment in specific ways

• Diagnose problems in distressed, uncooperative children

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Why is This Important?

• One third of the approximately 99 million ER visits each year is for a child

• Many not receiving appropriate or timely care due to the staff’s lack of pediatric training and experience

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Why is This Important?

• Immediate access to quality pediatric emergency medical care is critical!

• “The Golden Hour”

• Babies and children are not “little people” - Their needs are vastly different than an adult’s need

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

The Foundation provides funding to train a physician in Pediatric

Emergency Medicine; approximately $100,000 a year!

How Does Kiwanis Fit In?

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

Then What?

• Our Kiwanis Doctor travels throughout the CNH District training other doctors, nurses and first responders

• Focus on outlying areas within the District; Yuba City Twentynine Palms

KiwanisCal-Nev-Ha Foundation

The Result

The long-term impact of this training will save countless children whose lives might

otherwise be lost.
