Here is a message from Our President

Message from the President

Tuesday was another good meeting with our guests speaker Paul Liddle, the

General Manager of Koch, giving an interesting presentation. We had some

guests from Cypher Environmental of Winnipeg who also shared a few words

with the Club.

Please review the attached information provided by our Scholarship Committee

for consideration and further discussion by the Club at our next business

meeting.

On Wednesday the Rideau Park Committee had an excellent meeting with

Perry, Tanya and Bryce from Brandon City Parks. The City is very supportive of this

initiative. We will provide a full update at the business meeting, which hopefully will inspire some good discussion amongst club members. Stay tuned, more to

follow after Tuesday's meeting.

Please review the proposed agenda for the upcoming business meeting. If you

have any further items to add to the agenda please send them to me and I will add them.

Hamid

Information from the scholarship Committee for consideration by the Club.

• Kiwanis Clubs are asked to contribute a minimum of $15.00 per member, per year, to the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada (Our Club does this

automatically every year, so we qualify for the matching funds). • Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship Committee has the final decision as to the

student being approved for a scholarship.

• Kiwanis Foundation encourages a photograph of the recipient accepting

the scholarship be forwarded to the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada.

• To apply for the matching scholarship it must be applied for within the

2017 year before March 31st. Clubs are notified of acceptance by May

15th.

• Clubs are selected for a matching scholarship based on a district,

geographic, rotational basis and fund's availability i.e. acceptance is not

guaranteed.

• If a recipient has been selected the club will provide recipient's

information (name, address, list of accomplishments, etc.) 2 weeks prior to

presenting the scholarship. The scholarship cheque will be received prior

to the presentation date, along with a folder for presentation purposes. Cheques are made out to the club, not the scholarship recipient.

• Note, the scholarship brochure says the matching Kiwanis Foundation

scholarship is $500, but the website has more up to date information. The

amount capable of being matched by the Kiwanis Foundation is actually

$1000. • The Development Officer for Brandon University was very amenable to

working with our requirements. Per university established practices this

scholarship would be set up as a annual award (not an endowment) and

a scholarship (not a bursary).

• This is a list of initial recommended requirements for a student to apply for

this scholarship which matches any requirements of the Kiwanis

Foundation. Kiwanis Club of Brandon Scholarship to be awarded to a full-

time student who has:

o A record of high academic achievement in a minimum of 24 credit

hours.

o Demonstrated high level of community leadership and service as a

volunteer.

o Minimum of one letter of reference that outlines community service.

Issues to be looked into further:

• Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship Committee has final approval for the scholarship recipient, which may conflict with using Brandon University as

a Trustee for fund administration.

• One possible format would be to issue two annual scholarships of $1,000

each, preferably to one female and one male student: $1,000 provided

by the Kiwanis Club of Brandon matched by a further $1,000 from Kiwanis

Foundation.

• Possible name of Scholarship "Kiwanis Community Service Scholarship" • Means of promoting and advertising the scholarship by the Kiwanis Club

• Role of the Kiwanis Club in the selection of the scholarship recipients

(needs to be discussed with BU).
