KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN by Kander & Ebb James Cross discusses his produ ction for HumDrum AmDram at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth 100 On the 6 August 1900, the ew The,Hre Royal in Portsmouth was re- opened "fter Frank M,ltcham comp leted its third major redesisn. Nearly 2,000 peopl e filled tile baroque-rococo auditorium to see Sudermann's M.flgdfl on th 65 ft deep stage. In ra pid succe5£ ion the great actors perfomled there : Sarah Bernhardt, Henry Irving, John Gielgud. In 1932, as with Ports mo uth 's Prince's and Kin g's theatres t 0 years earlier, the Royal was conv er ted to II tear- prol'cction cinema. In 1948 the bui ding \- vas l" e-opened as a va ri ety th ea tr e, but wa s giv en over to wr estling (with sa ting and on the ·tage) until its closure in 1966. O" er fhe n xt SIX cars thI e ves re mo ved most of the or,lss ancllend Ittings. In ovember 1972 children broke into the building and firt!\-vorks vere on the s til ge, des tro ying the stage roof and techJlical block. The fo llowing year vandals destroyed the bulk at th e pl as terwork in the audituriulll. The New Theatre Royal Trustees purchased the building in 1980, and hav e co mmenced rE's toratlon. A temporary stage was built in front of the prosceni um arch and the theatre can n OW host 00 pe ople seated in the stalls and it s first ticr. HumDrum AmDram has us ed the New Theatre Royal Portsmouth since the group was form.'d in 1993. Th is July' we presented Kandel' & Ebb's Kiss of the Spider Woman, o ur 14th show. During the week of the s",ow the Arts Council ilnnounced that both of Portsmouth's re maining venues, the New Thea tre Royal and the King's wC're no longer to be consid ered lor Lottery hlnding. This news was a terrible blow to our members, ha ving seen such grea t improvemen ts in the theatre's facilities. Local press cove rag" proved to be ,1 doublc- edged sword; while milny people were determined to support the theat re by att('nding our p er for mance that we('k, others assumed the building has already closed. HumDrum is a relatively young and small theatre company. The group was formed with three main aims: to improve the performance skills of its members; to portray well-known pieces in a new light and to bring under-produced works into the City of Portsmouth. HumDrum has s pecialised in small-scale presentations of musicals and plays, from Stephen Sondheim's Illto tIle Wnods to Willy Russell's Shirley Va/ell fine. Kiss of th e Spider Woman was first s uggested to us folluwing our second presentation. It has a smilll cast of six men (two non- s inging) and thr ee women, plu s a chorus of mal E' prisoners, and at the time was ideal for a company of our size. We first soug ht to pe rform Kiss of tile Spider Wamnll in 1995, and three veal's later we were info rmed that permiSSion could be g ranted. Without being ha ssled by the female mem bership , th e director and chor eogra ph er wove severa I additional women int o the show's fantasy scenes, bringing the en tire cast to a total of 24. Further de ta.ils on fanta sy women to foll ow... It should be noted that it is becoming increa sing ly difficult to select small- scale musi cal pieces that will en s ure reasonable au dienc e figur es. We would welcome nny sLlggestions from similar groups. Kander ilnd Ebb and their director Harold Prince developed this musical version of Manuel Puig 's dark novel through a series of workshops in 1992. After the show's initial development, Ki ss of tile Spider Womall was t, lken from Canada to the UK. The show immediately won the Evening Standard's "w<ud for Best Musical. The novel concentrates on two characters sharing a South American prison cell: Molina, a 37 year-old gay wi ndow dresser a nd V"lentrn, a young politi cil l activist. As the novel closes, Molina declares that he is the Spider Woman, waitin!) for mC'.n to become trapp ed in hIS web. The subsequent film with the same title casts Valentin's upper class girlfriend, Marta in the role of the Spider Woman , a nd won an Oscar for William Hurst for his portrayal of Molina. Molina s urvives within the jail throu gh a series of fantasies about his screen heroine Aurora . In one of her films Aurora pla yed th e Spider Woman, who brought death to eve ryone she kissed. Molina be li eves that the Spider Woman will one-day ki ss him . At a crucial turning point, Valentin decides to ignore his dis trust of and distaste for Molin a and e mbra ce:; him. Once he's been kissed, Molina, now released from prison, passes vital information from Vakntin to MMta. THE LOVE SCENE Ask any hot-blooded malt' actor if he would like one of two lead ing roles that encompass nearlv all of th e dialogue, and most of the son gs in a musi ca l, his answer will probably be yes. Then tell him that half way through Act II he will kiss another male actor in front of his mother (in the audience). Meanwhile, tell one of them that he mu st remove his trousers and underwear during the first act to be cl eaned by th e other actor after be ing seriously poi son ed by the Prison Warden. Are they still interested? This is a gritty pi ece of theatre that makes no concession to hide the brutalitv within the prison. There ' it marked contrast between the phy sical ordeal of pri son over-crowding and the perceived tenderness th a t grows between the two men. Scc:ncs of violent beatings are interlaced with epic musi ca l scenes from '305 movi es - bound togeth e.r by Aurora , the Spider Woman . HumDrum was formed when two gro up s of fricnds were brought together to produce the '70s mu s ic,d Godspdl. As the company has grown our dirE.'C tors hilve continued to se lect the mOs t suitable peopl e for each rol" on th e basis of merit, ability and artistic development. ew membcrs are gener a ll y encouraged to meet the existing cast ,l nd crew before joining the grou p and u sua ll y work backstage during a performance before being cast. Tn this way they are introduced to our resident directo rs ,lnd choreographer and can discuss their aspirations and pr eviou s exper ience. Whilst one of HumDrum' s original membe rs was asked to crea te the character of Molina, his counterpart Valentin was played by a recent recruit in his seco nd musi ca l role. As one of our main aims, we successhlllv coached this perfo rmer's vocal technique and skills during the rehearsal period. The part of Aurora requires a female range down to the E berow middl e C (in fact the entire P'lrt is scored Bba). As with Valentin, we cast an actress who has been with HumDrum a coup le of years, though she has a great deal of experience in mu sica l thea tre, having worked with man y amateur companies within driving d ista nce of Portsmouth. The re are fo ur other main singing chara c ters within the piece: two women, Molina's mother and Marta, and two men, the Prison Warden and Molina's former ce ll mate, Gabriel. •• With only one relatively large-sca le musical per year, HumDrum was keen to ensu re that the female memb ers were given the opportunity to perfor m. The director wrestled with the notion for many month s wh il e reading the scrip t. Mo st people wo uld agree tha t it is inappropriate simp ly to include extra people in the cast solely because your membership exceeds the number of characters. Whilst listening to th e score the choreographer bega n to see images of lavish l3usby BerKle y mOVIes, and It was s uggested that a limited number of women were includ ed as Aurora's "on-screen" ent ou rage.
