COMMITMENT in order to achieve the objective.

    KISHORE BIYANIS PHILOSOPHY ON LEADERSHIP

Leadership is not about delegation, its about abdicationIt means instead of delegating the

authority to the subordinates or the followers and making them feel that they are not the part ofdecision makers; a leader should abdicate (renounce or disown the throne of authority) to theirfollowers and encouraging them to actively participate in decision making.

K.B believes in open door policyHe believes that the organization should be open to each andevery person working. He says that if you see the offices, they have designed them in such a way that

there are no locks in any of the rooms. All the rooms are transparent. Anybody can walk in. All overyou can see openness and transparency, which is reflected in everything we do.

A SUCCESSFUL LEADER SHOULD POSSESS CERTAIN TRAITS

Everyone can be empowered to tap into their natural leadership abilities to succeed in business and

in life. While each leader will have a unique style and roadmap to success, there are some commontraits that the most successful leaders share

    1. InitiativeInitiative (or personal initiative) is the characteristic that people possess that allows things to get

done. Leaders must have initiative. Without it, leaders are simply workers in leadership positions. Those who demonstrate initiative also demonstrate a leadership quality - perhaps the greatest

leadership quality that gets one noticed. You Can If You Believe You Can!

    2. Creativity SkillsLeaders demonstrating creativity skills are able to develop innovative solutions to old problems. Thediversity they build in their organizations helps them to develop more comprehensive answers toroutine questions. Creative leaders are able to translate technical information into solutions that are

    understood by everyone.

    3. Emotional IntelligenceEmpathy, self-awareness, decisiveness, self-discipline, intuitiveness and social competence are all

key to successful leadership and all are associated with high levels of emotional intelligence.Congeniality, the ability to put oneself in anothers shoes and relate with others, the ability to readbetween the lines and analyze the pulse of a relationship or situation, the ability to focus on thepositive and refrain from negative and self-defeating attitudes and behaviors, are all elements ofemotional intelligence that contribute to leadership success.

    4. Desire to lead AmbitionAny good leader should not settle for the second place. Success is a matter of who wins the top. Atrue leader will always have high standards and he or she will strive for excellence in every aspect.

    5. IntegrityHonesty and integrity are the cornerstone of sustainable success. In order for people to want tofollow their leader they must have complete trust in his honesty, his dedication, his commitment andhis unshakeable ethics and high standards and values. Leaders who are open, truthful and consistentin their behaviours are more likely to inspire trust, loyalty and commitment in their teams.

    6. Self-confidenceLeaders have no shortage of that essential commodity of self-assurance that enables them to riskgiant strides, be bold and tough-minded and fall forward in the rare instances when they do fall/fail.Leaders generally have little need for approval and are motivated by an inner strength, maturity anddrive. Leaders are very cognizant of their inner strengths, weaknesses and the impact they have onothers and knowledgeable of what they can and cannot realistically do/achieve/influence. They do

not wallow in self-pity or guilt over past mistakes or doubt.

    7. EnthusiasmLeaders inspire others with the very infectiousness of their enthusiasm and their disarmingly genuinekeenness, passion and zeal for what they do. Rather than dwelling on problems they are solution-

oriented and focus on how to make things work and succeed. They are willing to see the silver liningin every cloud and have a can-do optimistic attitude that leaves no place for negativity.

    8. Analytical abilityA problem has many facets that need to be dealt with. A good leader will keep the main goal in focus

but is able to analyse the matter, by breaking it into parts meant to be inspected. An analytic mind isneeded when progress must be made by dealing with every step in particular.

    CHARACTERISTICS OF KISHORE BIYANI

    1. Visionary:He is true visionary person. He started selling readymade garments when nobody preferred ready-to-wear shirts or trousers but he focuses on the vision of the company and attracted the customers. Nowhis vision is serving Indian society and which is unchallenged.

    2. Risk taker:He tried out different things on his own, like readymade garments, textile production, creating brandsbefore he ventured in retail business of selling garments. He took risk in doing something new everytime. Because he believes if you are not a risk taker, you are not a businessman, not anentrepreneur and nor even a leader.

    3. Ambitious:He always had ambition of making his ideas big in business, and that he has done. Future Group isthe perfect example which is existing today only because of Kishore Biyani.

    4. Simplicity:Youll never catch him in a tie and jacket. It is the ultimate sophistication for him. He like to bealways simple no matter he have reached to higher position.

    5. Optimistic:In his own words, Kishore Biyani was an eternal optimist. Today, hes transformed into a realist. Its my next phase in life, shrugs the Chairman of the Rs 8,600 crores Future Group, which has

today moved away from retail into financial services.

    TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

    Thought leadership Skills Leadership

Kishore Biyani believes that there are two types of leadership. The first is all about thoughtleadership, which is original thought, believing in it and making things happen based on thosethoughts. The second type is skills leadership, which refers to doing things consistently and in yourown style.

And the type or style of leadership he followed is Thought Leadership because in his Leadership isall about thought leadership, not skills leadership. Skills leadership can be developed even after the

age of 24 or 25, but thought leadership cannot be developed after a certain age. Because it is believedthat thoughts or ideas generate more at a younger age.

    THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

Thought leadership is about building scenarios and making them happen. I believe everybody is avictim of systemic thinking and has their own mental syntax. First things come first, and everythingelse is a reflection of where you started on that first thing. If you change that syntax, things change.

If you have a business school orientation, your syntax of thinking will be in a particular direction. Iam a businessman and entrepreneur, so my syntax of thinking will be in a different direction. Each

has a unique method of sequencing to arrive at answers.

One would have to change everything to look at things differently. That is a very difficult thing to doas we have our own mental maps. We are not trained to change mental models. Business schools alsohave not been trained to do that. Business schools work on creating efficiencies, creatingproductivity and managing consistency. But life is not like that. Life is chaotic.

MEASUREMENT OF EFFECTIVENESS OF A LEADER

Our measurement of effectiveness is a capitalistic approach based largely on how successful leadersare in terms of balance sheet performance. But we must also look at many other benchmarks.

Leadership is all about making effective change, creating some kind of paradigm shift by looking atthe world or anything in a different way.

The environment around you keeps changing and you must keep creating new lenses to look atthings. Very few leaders are consistent throughout.

HOW HAVE YOU DEVELOPED LEADERSHIP IN YOUR ORGANIZATION?

We have developed a very different style of leadership. We run a seamless (no obvious joints, smooth and continuous) organization. We don't have structures; it is a non-hierarchical organizationthat works with people coming together to do things.

    It is also a very design-driven organization. We believe the structure has to be broken up to change;

the design has to be altered to change things. A design-driven organization has flexibility andmanoeuvrability (a skilful movement). It is an amorphous organization that can be given any shape

    and any direction anytime.

We can chop and change anything we do, anytime. Nothing is constant for us. Nothing is constanthere. We believe in destroying what we have created

Most people are trained to be preservers. It is great to be a preserver. But for us, whoever has tocreate has to destroy. Without destroying, you cannot create anything new.

That is also the law of nature. Look at the seasons. Everything gets destroyed to create somethingnew. But unfortunately, business does not take any cues from nature. None of the business schools

takes anything from nature. One cannot go against the flow of nature. In our group, we don't followbusiness principles. We follow the principles of nature.

One of the biggest principles we follow, as I have said in the book, is to go with the flow. Hisfavourite business mantra is Go with the flow.

We never do anything against the flow of nature. And when you follow the principles of nature, ideas will get destroyed and recreated.

If you look at nature, human beings have not changed over a period of so many years. Love, hate andall the other emotions are still the same. But we all complicate things. We create segments,

psychographics and other indices. It is a simple world, but we break it up and start looking at itthrough lenses that are very different. You will find all the answers in nature.

How do you use these principles to build your business?

Everything, everything is built on these principles. If you see our offices, we have designed them insuch a way that there are no locks in any of the rooms. All the rooms are transparent. Anybody can

walk in. All over you can see openness and transparency, which is reflected in everything we do.

    SOME RULES OF HIS LIFE:

Who have helped you, share your success with those people. Communicate with people and show them you care them. Listen to others and learn from their ideas. Change your goal according to situation or be flexible.

Kishore Biyani was a strong believer of his religion and he always try to implement it into thebusiness. Hence he utilized Indian mythology to achieve his ultimate goal: to make retail a religionacross the length and breadth of the group.
