25-year celebrations for Kirkwood Hospice K IRKWOOD Hospice will celebrate its 25th anniversary in March. Opened in 1987, it has served the people of Kirklees admirably from its premises in Albany Road, Dalton, and remains a highly regarded healthcare provider. Now however, it is entering a new phase with a £3m refurbishment of the 16-bed inpatient area. This will mean that in June, the whole inpatient unit will move to a temporary home in Ward 11 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. As well as the current patients, all staff and facilities will move together to maintain the same high standard of care. Beds, furniture and even meals will be transported from Dalton to the unit’s temporary home in Lindley. But patients and their families can be reassured that the same high standards of care will be maintained. Day patients will remain unaffected and day-to-day palliative and family care will carry on as normal. Garry Wilkinson, the hospice’s director of fundraising and marketing said: “The only part of the hospice affected by the refurbishment is the inpatient unit, which will move as a complete unit to HRI. Everything else and all other departments will remain at the hospice. “Patients who face a move to HRI need not worry as the whole ethos of Kirkwood Hospice will be transported to Lindley with the same standards of care and nursing staff.’’ Work will start on the hospice refurbishment in June and although there will be no more bed spaces available, it will mean that more patients will have single rooms, en-suite facilities and space for their families. “Several new family lounges and private rooms will be created so that patients can spend quality time with their family members coming to visit, and of course we will have our lovely garden, although it will be slightly smaller,’’ added Garry. When the idea of creating a hospice for the Kirklees area was first suggested, it was at a time when hospices were few and far between. At that time many people had not even heard about the work of a hospice so in this area Kirkwood Hospice was trailblazing in the field of care for the terminally ill. The idea was first mooted in 1981 when fund raising appeals were launched in both Huddersfield and Dewsbury. Planning permission for the hospice was granted in 1984 and the foundation stone was laid in 1986. After a public competition to choose the name, Kirkwood Hospice opened on HOSPICE: The familiar building and gardens of Kirkwood Hospice, established for 25 years at Albany Road, Dalton, to serve local people. Garry Wilkinson, director of fundraising and marketing, is pictured (inset) March 18, 1987. It has gone on to help thousands of people and their families come to terms with terminal illness. Since it opened, a network of hospice shops has opened across Kirklees and fund raising continues apace to maintain the high standard of care. The Department of Health and local primary care trust contribute less than 20% towards the annual running costs, so the majority of the revenue comes from fund raising, donations, legacies, support groups, the hospice’s own lottery and investments. It is essential that support for the Kirkwood Hospice continues so it can look forward to the next 25 years. After all, a member of your family or a close friend may need its valued help one day. 25 years and still reallyloving the hospice work

■ VOLUNTEER: Judith Robinson

■ FUNDRAISING: Hilary Turner

■ SISTER: Gill Hinchliffe

VOLUNTEERING plays a vital rolein the running of the KirkwoodHospice.

If it weren’t for the hospice’s army of volunteers, much of the essential day-to-day work would bemuch more difficult.Volunteers take on all kinds of roles includingmanning the reception desk, gardening, recycling, transporting patients, running thehospice shops, acting as ward clerks and muchmore.Altogether around 35,000 hours were notchedup by volunteers in 2011.Judith Robinson, who has been involved withKirkwood Hospice from day one, is thevolunteer co-ordinator.She said: “I came here in October 1986 beforewe opened in March. At the time I was doing anOpen University course and I had to attend alecture about death and dying. This was at thetime when there were very few hospices in theUK.

“I was enthralled by the lecture and about theinformation on how a hospice works. This waswhen I knew I had to get involved.“Most of the volunteers who come to help us atKirkwood have had some dealings with ahospice or have had relatives or friends whohave needed its help.“They have seen first-hand the invaluable workit does and want to get involved.’’Judith has seen changes in the hospice’s 25-yearhistory.“The number of volunteers has increased overthe years and we now take on more roles. Lastyear alone we took on 48 new volunteers. Quiteoften we get young people volunteering as well,as part of Duke of Edinburgh award schemes orwho come to us from local colleges.“I know that 16 of our current volunteers havebeen here right from the start.’’Anyone who wants to get involved involunteering at the hospice can ring Judith on01484 557900.

Essential annual fundraisingHILARY Turner is Kirkwood

Hospice’s director of finance andadministration and has worked

for the organisation since day one.She still loves the work.Hilary is responsible for all financial issues atKirkwood and oversees the major annualfundraising effort.“Things have obviously changed over the yearsas the hospice has grown; the major issue, ofcourse, being the need to raise even more moneyas we have expanded and offered more servicesto the people of Kirklees.’’Hilary said the fundraising target for the firstyear’s running costs was £380,000.In more recent times this has increased to over£4m every year.

She said: “This year we have to raise the normal£4m along with an extra £3m to cover therefurbishment work for the inpatient unit.“This means it is essential that people continueto support us in whatever way they can.’’Hilary, who started her working role at thehospice as a part-time administrator said:“There is always a great sense of achievementwhen we reach our target and it is also veryhumbling to see how the money comes in.Funds are not normally raised in big amounts;donations tend to come from people who aresending in just small amounts.“This all adds up and we are grateful for everypenny.“It is the small gestures which add up.’’

Caring for 25 yearsSENIOR Sister Gill Hinchliffe,

has been caring forKirkwood patients since the

hospice first opened. As she moved back to the Huddersfieldarea 25 years ago, the hospice was aboutto open and was recruiting staff.Gill, who was interested in the hospicemovement and care of terminally illpatients, got a job initially as a part-timestaff nurse working nights.“As I was thinking of returning to workafter having my children, there was a lot inthe press about opening a hospice inKirklees.“At that time the hospice movement wasin its infancy. There were a few hospicesopen across the country but not many.’’Today Gill is Senior Sister at KirkwoodHospice, working in the 16-bed inpatientunit. She said: “Things have changed a lot overthe years and we now offer more servicesto individuals. We have been able toeducate other professionals aboutpalliative care which can be delivered inthe community.“Today patients have more choice abouthow they are cared for and where theywant to die: either at home or in the careof the hospice.“Often they can be looked after in their

own home unless there is a crisis and theyneed nursing care in a hospice situation.“There is a popular misconception thatonce a patient arrives in the hospice, he orshe never leaves. We regularly havepatients who stay with us for a while, oftento get pain under control, and then returnback to their homes again.“Patients can have very complex problemsand I hope my nursing team can make adifference to their lives.’’Gill leads a team of about 30 nurses and issupported by two nursing sisters, SarahShaw and Noreen Williams. She said: “I feel that the nursing staff domake a difference. When you see someonego home again, relatively well, it is veryrewarding.“When you have helped someone to diepeacefully and also supported the family,it does mean a lot.’’Gill said she recently addressed anaudience about the new Capital Appeal.During her address she recounted acomment from a hospice patient who saidthey had turned his life around fromwanting to be at the end of his life, to nowlooking forward to the rest of his life.“He said he could not thank us enough, and this is what makes the job sorewarding.’’

Kirkwood Hospice Capital Appeal to builda 21st Century hospice, brick by brick

SINCE Kirkwood Hospice wasestablished 25 years ago, it hashelped thousands of people with

life-threatening illnesses and providedsupport for their families and friends. To ensure that hospice care is accessible to all,no charge is made for any of the servicesprovided and the hospice relies on the peopleand businesses of Kirklees for donations andfundraising.Kirkwood provides care and support for manyof the region’s patients through its Support &Therapy Centre, community nurses and FamilyCare Team. However, some people will require pain andsymptom control or end-of-life care as aninpatient at the hospice.

Inpatient Care

Kirkwood’s 16-bed inpatient unit is located inthe oldest part of the hospice building. The unithas undergone improvements and redecorationover the years, although the layout and in-builtservices available have remained largelyunchanged in the last 25 years. With major advances in the early diagnosis andtreatment of life-threatening illness, patients arenow living longer with their illness. As carebecomes more long term, patients have morecomplex needs and additional facilities andequipment are required. As a result, a plan has been developed torefurbish and extend the inpatient unit to meetthe needs of patients and families today.Kirkwood needs your help to raise £3m overthe coming year to fund these essential works.

The vision for Kirkwood’s inpatient unit

The refurbished and extended building willimprove the support and care provided forpatients and their families. This will include:Nine single bedrooms, all en-suite and with anovernight bed for families, thus improvingprivacy and dignity for patients and their lovedones. Having more single rooms also providesmore flexibility on admissions and makesinfection control more effective.A new three-bed and a four-bed bay forpatients who prefer the social interaction of ashared ward, and a separate bedroom forfamilies wishing to stay over.More communal facilities for patients and theirfamilies away from the bedside, including alarge family lounge with a kitchen and diningareas.More quiet spaces and private meeting areas, with space to accommodate a bed so thatpatients in the multi-occupancy bays can haveprivate conversations regarding their care andneeds. Two assisted bathrooms with whirlpool baths.Being able to take a bath can make a realdifference to a patient.

Wall-mounted televisions in single rooms andarm-mounted televisions in the bays. Two separate nurses’ stations will maximiseefficiency, extend observation points and ensurepatient safety.Improved layout and facilities will increase theamount of time nurses are able to spend ondirect patient contact.Piped oxygen and a suction system will beinstalled throughout so that it is available atevery bed for any patient who may require it.The nurse call facility will be replaced with anup-to-date and portable system. The single rooms will include full ceilingtracking in order to move patients around moreeasily and comfortably, reducing the risk ofpatient falls and protecting the health andsafety of nurses while they are moving patients.Bringing facilities up to date is an essential partof improving the service provided for theresidents of Kirklees and also for the staff andvolunteers who work at the hospice.Additional plans include:Increasing energy efficiency in order to reducerunning costs and minimise the carbonfootprint.Fully rewiring the inpatient unit and upgradingthe number of electrical power points.

This will ensure that there are adequate socketsfor electric beds, mattresses and other essentialequipment and for patients’ electronicequipment such as MP3 players and phonechargers, while avoiding the need for extensioncables and adaptors.Improving the amount of natural lightthroughout the building.Ensuring that all beds have an outlook andaccess to the gardens, as outside space is ofsignificant therapeutic value to patients andfamilies. The new unit will upgrade the facilities andenvironment for inpatients and their families, while retaining the warm, homely, relaxedatmosphere of the hospice. It will make it easier for staff to carry out theirduties and spend more time with patients and itwill ensure that patients get the care anddignity they deserve.

Kirkwood’s new unit will cost £3m. This willcover all capital costs, including the purchase ofnew equipment. The building works will commence in June2012 and it is expected that the doors of thenew, improved inpatient unit will open in June2013.

How You Can Help?

The Capital Appeal to raise £3m will runthroughout 2012.This is in addition to the money raised byhospice friends and supporters every year tohelp fund the day-to-day running costs andservices already being provided. Some forthcoming Capital Appeal Events areincluded in this supplement, includingKirkwood’s Sponsor a Brick campaign. This campaign will raise funds for the CapitalAppeal, while also laying a new path in thegrounds of the hospice.Remember your loved one and supportKirkwood by adding your personal inscriptionto the path of bricks. The path will lead to a new permanent feature,a specially designed labyrinth, to sit in harmonywith the new building and enhance the gardens

of Kirkwood.Your own personal inscription will leave alasting impression and give out a huge messageof support to all the patients, families and staffat Kirkwood. In return for your order you will receive acertificate to confirm the wording of yourinscription and once the bricks have been laidyou will receive an invite to walk along thefootpath and see your inscription for yourself. For further information about sponsoring abrick, or helping in any other way contactMarie Peacock, Capital Appeal manager on01484 557911.Alternatively contact her by e-mail [email protected] or visit the websitewww.capitalappeal.orgYour help is invaluable in raising the essentialfunds.

Thank you very much for the first 25 years

Teamwork with Town

■ HISTORY: Early days atKirkwood Hospice in AlbanyRoad, Dalton (above) whenbuilding work first got underway and (right) the morefamiliar face of the hospice asit is today with its extensivegarden area

TWENTY five years ago after sixyears of planning, hard work andserious fundraising, Kirkwood

Hospice opened its doors to patientsfrom Kirklees living with lifethreatening illnesses.Twenty five years on, it’s still largely thanks tothe people of Kirklees that make it possible forthe hospice to care year after year. The Kirkwood story started in June 1981,inspired by a BBC TV play called GoingGently.Soon after, an article in the HuddersfieldExaminer praised the play, about two elderlypeople dying from terminal illnesses in ahospital ward.

Fundraising

The author of the article also referred to theUK hospice movement, while highlighting thefact that Kirklees had no such facility at a timewhen about 1,000 terminally ill people weredying each year in the area. The article was read by David Stocks, whosefather had recently died from cancer, spurringhim to reply by asking if readers would beinterested in starting an appeal for a hospice. On July 1, a meeting at David’s house wasattended by eight people and the appeal wasborn, starting with 50p donations! As a result of these humble yet importantbeginnings, a public meeting was arranged, attended by 200 people. As a result of this meeting, the HuddersfieldHospice Appeal was launched, its initial aimbeing to raise £300,000 to help fund the project. In the meantime, more subscriptions were beingcollected and support groups started, not onlyto raise funds and gain community support butto create awareness of hospice care, bydispelling the common myth that hospices werejust places where people went to die.Within three months, the support groups raised£10,000, and a staggering £100,000 in the firstyear of the appeal!Dr Alan Barlow was then made chairman ofthe appeal. In 1983, a similar appeal started in Dewsburymerged with the Huddersfield Hospice Appeal,as it was decided that it was not practical to

have two hospices in Kirklees.

Planning the Hospice

Originally, it had been suggested that thehospice could be accommodated within anexisting building no longer in use. However, ultimately it was decided that acustom-built solution designed to meet thespecific requirements of patients and theirfamilies would be the most suitable choice. The location would be in the grounds of MillHill Hospital, Dalton, a site chosen for its easeof access for visitors by public transport and bycar and for its serene and peaceful ruralenvironment. Even before this site was chosen, between 1982/83, £230,000 had been raised, with further sums of up to £9,000 being raisedeach month by the support groups! This in turn spurred on even more members ofthe community to get involved in a range ofactivities. Donations from companies, schools, church collections, folk clubs, pubs and coffeemornings also played their part in raising fundsthen, as much as they still do today. The architects set to work drawing up plans fora single-storey building to accommodate 10patients, a day care centre, a chapel and stafffacilities. The building cost would be £500,000with running costs of £250,000 per annum. With a completion period of 12 months inmind, work commenced in March 1986. ByAugust, former Nursing Officer JohnMurgatroyd, was appointed and recruitment forother key members of staff was soon underway. Two weeks before the hospice opened its doorsto its first patients, the new staff attended aninduction, where they were made aware of theirvarious responsibilities and kept busy ensuringthat all the equipment was sterilised, installedcorrectly and in full working order, ready forthe opening day.On March 31, 1987, Kirkwood Hospice wasofficially opened by Kathy Staff (Norah Battyfrom Last Of The Summer Wine) David Stocks, founder of the appeal fund and Dr AlanBarlow, hospice president.

Kirkwood’s hopes for the next 25 years!

Over the past 25 years there have been many

changes in the world of palliative care andmedicine. The hospice is constantly aware ofthese changes and developments and is in aposition to implement them effectively, withconfidence in the knowledge that the patients atKirkwood will always receive the very besttreatment and service that the hospice team iscapable of providing.Twenty five years on and Kirkwood is onceagain faced with the challenge of raising funds

for an inpatient facility. The Capital Appeal was launched on January31 2012 to raise the £3m required to refurbishand extend the hospice, ensuring thatKirkwood can continue to provide the very bestin palliative care for the next 25 years andbeyond! This new appeal will, perhaps, prove even morechallenging than the original appeal.
