A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MINISTER
‘‘They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.’
Psalm 145:7
Dear Friends
What an amazing summer this has been (despite the weather!). We have had the
Queen‘s Diamond Jubilee. Our new Youth Minister Drew Kuzma and his family
joined us on the 1st July, the Olympics which were just superb was compulsive viewing
and for once we had a choice of champions to cheer on – Andy Murray, Jessica Ennis,
Mo Farrah, Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and many more. Didn‘t we do well as Brucie
would say!
In addition a number of the church family once again shared a week of fun, worship
and fellowship together in St Andrews at Clan Gathering (a Christian Festival which
takes place every July), and where this year five of our young people gave their lives to
Christ – now that really is worth celebrating. We also had the opportunity to hear the
Moderator of the General Assembly Right Rev Albert Bogle who was a key note
speaker at Clan this year, so the Church of Scotland was well represented, and just to
round things off before we all head into the autumn season,
back to school, back to work, back to normal we had
tremendous fun at this years kids‘ club ‗Champions
Challenge‘ which was supported by Scripture Union
Scotland.
It was a full on summer and a memorable one and the sense
has been one of joy and celebration. We really need to
celebrate the goodness of God more, because the joy of the
Lord is our strength.
St Francis of Assisi often called himself a jester for God.
Everywhere he went, he brought joyful vitality to those he
encountered. He made it clear that true spirituality was to be
in a state of joyfulness. Often he would pick up a stick and
pretend to fiddle a tune as he danced and sang happy songs
for children. The joyfulness of the saints and the spirit of
celebration often catches us by surprise, it shouldn‘t – joy is the second of the ‗fruits of
the Spirit,‘ as recorded in Galatians 6.

Maybe it‘s our cultural bent as Scots or as Presbyteri-
ans, but let me share a story I heard recently that
challenged me about being joyful and celebrating the
goodness of God. Tony Campolo the Christian evan-
gelist had just been speaking at a Christian Festival
not unlike Clan Gathering, where young people had
come together to hear contemporary Christian bands
and listen to speakers with messages especially de-
signed to reach young people. At the end of the festi-
val Campolo had agreed to a preaching engagement
at a local Lutheran Church, before heading back
home. Instead of the usual 200 or so people that nor-
mally filled the church, that morning there were over
800 people crammed into every pew available, there
were young people standing along both sides of the
church, the minister was delighted. ‗we really adver-
tised your coming widely throughout the area,‘ he
remarked to Campolo.
The service began with the minister, clothed in his
robes, standing at the pulpit, in a very formal setting
with all the accessories that go with ‗high church‘
worship announcing in a droning voice, ‗this is the
day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in
it. Let us come into His gates with thanksgiving and
into his courts with praise.’
A young man in the balcony raised his arms and
shouted at the top of his lungs, ‗All ri-i-i-i-ght!’
All over the place, young people began to clap and
cheer. Campolo watched as the minister struggled to
comprehend the reaction his words had elicited. He
was stunned. The last thing in the world he ever ex-
pected when he called upon the congregation to make
a joyful noise unto the Lord was that anybody would!
Despite everything and in all circumstances, let us
give praise to God and thank him for his goodness to
us, let‘s make a joyful noise unto the Lord, for He is
good his love endures forever.
Every blessing
Maggie

THE GUILD
The Guild celebrates its 125th anniversary this year and the Guild motto"
Whose we and whom we serve" is the theme for 2012 to 2015,with this year‘s
part being entitled ―A Faith to Proclaim‖. Our session begins on Wednesday
12th September at 7.30p.m when David Black will be speaking on the theme.
During our next session we have a variety of speakers including on Sept 26th a
speaker from Blythswood Care ,fun evenings, trips out and we invite old and
new members, men and women, to come along and join us. The projects we
are supporting this year are Comfort Rwanda, raising money to build 100
homes for survivors of the genocide, and Heart for Art, a project supporting
people with dementia and their carers. We look forward to another year of fun,
fellowship and sharing our faith with old and new friends.

FAIR TRADE
Thanks to all volunteers over the last few months, who collect the order from
the Just World Shop in Portobello and help on the Sunday Stall. Hope no-one
was too inconvenienced by the change in August. Please just ask if ever you
need supplies between the monthly stalls. Next stall will be on the 2nd Sunday
in September, Sunday 9th, after morning worship. Do check out some new lines
like olives from Palestine, by co-operative called Zaytoun operating near
Bethlehem. As the autumn term approaches I'd be grateful for more volunteers:
please just add your names to the list in the Church Centre. Your support is
much appreciated.
The catalogues are due in the next few weeks: I am trying not to say the word,
but Keith Moss knows how many sleeps to the big Day!

SUNDAY CLUB
We hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer – the Sunday Club Team
thoroughly enjoyed our summer break. This term we have opted not to use any
published material for planning our teaching but instead we are going to create
lessons and crafts ourselves on the theme of ―People Who Were Touched by
God and Made a Difference‖. We intend this to be a mix of biblical figures
(Joseph, Daniel, Paul, Samson, Esther, Jonah, Mary, etc) and people who were
alive more recently (Eric Liddell, David Livingstone, Mother Theresa and a host
of others). This year we are delighted that we are going to have Ewan Lawson
(Tabby‘s big brother) join the team as part of his work towards his Duke of
Edinburgh award. Welcome, Ewan!
We will continue with ―Something Different at Sunday Club‖ – please feel free
to let us know if you would like to come and talk to the children or if you would
like to do a craft activity with them. We also continue to support out mission-
ary, Jen, by regular giving.
Last term we had a very successful ―Praise Party‖ where Jane Plumb came and
showed us how to party and praise God in style. The children played games,
sang, waved flags that they had made and finished it all off with some party
food.
Please continue to pray for the children in our Sunday Club and indeed for all
children in the Parish. Thanks again to all who help us in any way – your input
is very much appreciated.

CHILD PROTECTION
The Safeguarding Office recently announced progress on the Protection of
Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
CRBS has just announced that retrospective checking will start on 29th October
2012. Retrospective checking is for volunteers and paid staff who already have an
Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check, or who have never been checked, joining the
PVG Scheme. This will happen over the next three years.
Existing Church volunteers and paid staff will join the PVG Scheme in phases to
make the process manageable. The first group to join the PVG Scheme will be
existing volunteers working with children who have never been Enhanced
Disclosure Scotland checked. After they have joined we will confirm who is next.
These volunteers are likely to be those working with protected adults e.g. pastoral
care workers, and those working with children who have been Enhanced Disclosure
Scotland checked'. I will work out who needs to undergo this check first, and
approach people when I have the forms.
In the meantime, I am continuing to do checks on people who are taking up new
posts and have not been checked by the Church of Scotland before.

HOLIDAY WORSHIP
This year we have had two breaks in Scotland which offered the opportunity
to visit other churches. Near Scotlandwell, we arrived when the local
churches together had a week's festival of events, culminating in Sunday
morning worship in a tent, in a field overlooking Loch Leven. Surprisingly it
was a glorious day, and the service was well attended, It was led by a
Hebridean minister who welcomed us in Gaelic first, and with the aid of a
praise band, our songs of praise to the Lord rang out across the fields and
villages!
As I write, I have returned from morning worship in St Bride's Newtonmore
led by Catherine Buchan and the sermon was delivered by John Christie. A
beautiful new painting by Jean Noble is now gracing their altar space: it
depicts the dry bones of Ezekiel and rising from it, an intricate Celtic cross
with gorse bloom behind it. New life from dry bones and the redemption of
the empty cross. It is wonderfully uplifting and worth trying to see if you are
in the area. John Christie's message was how God blesses us through the
work of artists and craftsmen who can bring alive pictorially the salvation of
Jesus.
CHAMPIONS’ CHALLENGE
Champions Challenge our Summer Club for P1 to P7 ran from Monday to
Thursday from 10.30a.m to 2.30p.m. and each day we had around 50 children,
with our team of 21 volunteers, from our own church, from The Community
Church and from Scripture Union. Our daily programme began with warm up
exercises and continued with praise and action songs, bible stories and work
sheets, drama of the bible stories, games and arts and crafts. It was a great
week of fun and fellowship for the children and an exhausting but extremely
rewarding week for volunteers, some challenging questions being asked of
team leaders, seeds sown for future members of our church..
If it sounds like fun to you come along and join us next year, come and
experience the joy of working with enthusiastic children. One gem of a quote
to one group leader : Question on the work sheet, If you could ask Jesus a
question what would it be? Child: I would like to ask Jesus how he does his
miracles because I would like to do miracles.

C.A.B NEWS
We are always so happy when c.a.b. goes out on
Friday nights and the children are waiting for us.
As usual we get a mix of ages and we alter our
activities to suit all ages. The younger children
usually want to do some craft work while the
older kids show their competitive side and have
skipping competitions (even the boys) or play
British Bulldogs which really gives the leaders a
workout.
We love to see some of the Mums and Grannies
when they sit outside and keep an eye on their
wee ones. Alas the weather has been rubbish so
not great for connecting with the adults.
The c.a.b has had 5 weeks holiday and was back
on 17th August.
We are planning another family ceilidh this year
at the end of summer so watch out for that
announcement.
We were delighted to see some of the kids
support the Church gala parade as they walked
alongside the c.a.b. Some of the c.a.b. kids came
along to the church service and also to our
Champions‘ Challenge summer club. The
leaders are always short of helpers but we still
love to be out there. If you have a couple of
hours to spare and could help then please get in
touch with me (0131 3330333) or Morag Carnall
0131 3333420.

PHONE CALL TO GOD
Hello, God. I called tonight
to talk a little while...
I need a friend who‘ll listen
To my anxiety and trial.
You see, I can‘t quite make it
Through a day just on my own.
I need your love to guide me,
So I‘ll never feel alone.
I want to ask you please to keep
My family safe and sound.
Come fill their lives with confi-
dence
For whatever fate they‘re bound.
Give me faith, dear God, to face
Each hour throughout the day,
And not to worry over things
I can‘t change in any way.
I thank you, God, for being home
And listening to my call,
for giving me such good advice
When I stumble and I fall.
Your number, God, is the only one
That answers every time.
I never get a busy signal
Never had to pay a dime.
So, thank you, God, for listening
To my troubles and my sorrow.
Good-night, God. I love you too,
And I‘ll call again tomorrow.

CLAN 2012
Christians Linked Across the Nation
A large group of our church family went to CLAN at the end of July.
WOW! What a week that was. It was really special to see hundreds of
people having fellowship together and enjoying all the God has for us.
We had the most wonderful worship from live bands. The music was a
mixture of traditional and modern. If you have never heard hundreds of
people praising God and signing their hearts out under a huge ―big top‖
then you have a treat in store.
There were seminars throughout the day with wonderful speakers who had
something for everyone. Our very own Moderator of the General Assem-
bly of the Church of Scotland, Albert Bogle was one of them. He tells us
to go out into the community and do what Jesus would have done i.e. con-
nect with the people and bring the good news of Jesus‘ love to them.
One message that spoke to me was from a minister who built a church
from only a few people but it grew to hundreds. He said that when build-
ing our church we can be like three groups of people at the scene of an
accident: rubber neckers; police and medics
Rubber-neckers might slow down and take a look but keep on
going and not get involved.
Police might get involved but will want to apportion blame.
Medics who will take care and make well.
In Kirkliston I pray that we will all be medics and build up a healthy-
church.
On a lighter note I saw people having their hands massaged while having
blessings spken over them.
We had great late evening fun with worship from Ian White while we
munched on fudge doughnuts and drank hot chocolate to just finish our
evening off. The most wonderful thing was seeing people being touched
by the Holy Spirit and having their lives changed forever.
Most of the group were there for the week but some came only for a day
which gave them a taster. If this is something you would like to experience
then contact Maggie Lane and she will put you in touch with someone
who will organise this for you.
God Bless
Christina

EAST FORTUNE AIR SHOW
On Saturday 28th July, 24 of our Boys brigade and family
travelled through to East Fortune for the Air Show. The
weather was not kind to us and we had to run for cover
several times. Luckily there are plenty of hangars full of
things to see and do. Highlight of the day was the Red
Arrows Display and despite the weather everyone had a
good day out.
