Monymusk Church Newsletter: Issue 3 From the Manse But it is not the landscape alone that makes Monymusk a special place—it is also the community spirit: from the team of folk who look after the flower boxes, the Hall committee, the leaders of the various groups and those who attend them, the school, to the shop and the hotel. This summer we had the first Monymusk Boules Tournament which pulled the community together and raised a large amount of money for the church and other local community groups and charities. On behalf of the church I would like to express thanks to the organisers and helpers. We are all are members of the community and should play our part in it. If you are not already involved, any of the groups would warmly welcome you. You can find out more in our Community Corner on page 7. Just go along and tell them I sent you! There is always a warm welcome in the parish church where our mission is to serve everyone in Monymusk. I wish you well and once again affirm that should you need the services of a minister or the church we are here for you. Please just get in touch—the contact details are at the foot of the page. Euan Glen God blessed me twenty one years ago when I was called by the people of Monymusk to become their minister. Part of the parish includes Paradise Woods but for me the entire parish is Paradise, its beauty, its pace, its people and the church I serve in. My family and I have been supported and cared for. I could not imagine any better place to work and for that I thank you. Over the years we have become accustomed to the beauty of nature around us: deer over the fence at the back of the Manse, red squirrels in the garden, woodpeckers and other wild birds at the feeding posts, the changing of the seasons and the colours they bring. I hope that I shall always appreciate my time here and never take it or you, the folk of Monymusk for granted. I recently met an American family over here to trace their family history and was showing them around the church. We went up to the bell tower and onto the roof of the church. The day was dry and quite bright and we looked around the parish from the high vantage point. “What a beautiful place you stay in, how lucky you are!” one of them said. Who could disagree? Stewardship through the Ages Page 4

There has been a place of worship in Monymusk for many centuries

The history of the church has been well documented over the years by

a variety of authors But what of the stewardship of the church How

has it survived all these years and how was it supported back in its

early times

Tradition has it that King Malcolm Canmore was camped in the area in

1078 on his way to quell a disturbance in Moray He vowed that if his

expedition was successful he would grant the Crown lands of Monymusk

and Keig to the church This proved to be the case and Malcolm was

credited with being the lsquofounderrsquo of the church at Monymusk This

early gift of land literally laid the foundation stones of our present

church although many changes have occurred over the years

The early incumbents of Monymusk church and

priory the Culdees were a loosely knit society of

missionaries who would probably have been self-

sufficient as to their daily needs They possessed

gardens a croft and grazing for horses and sheep

Monymusk was a centre of religious importance in

those early days and there are records of many

grants ndash of land of livestock and goods conferred on

the Priory In 1245 two confirmations from Pope

Innocent IV arrived one conferring a gift of land

and the other the revenue from neighbouring

churches on the prior and canons of Monymusk lsquoso

that their convent will not be in wantrsquo

lsquoOf these splendid traditions of this bright example of these

evangelistic triumphs we are the heirs The simplicity the self

devotion the prayerfulness the burning love of Christ which shone

forth in these Celtic missionaries of old must be our spiritual

equipment nowrsquo (Bishop Lightfoot theologian 1828-1889)

Around this time the Culdees became a prior and eleven canons of the

order of St Augustine attached to the diocese of Aberdeen Little is

known about the priory in Monymusk but its organisation would have

been similar to other centres of the order in that there would have

been canonical services training for novices study of theology and a

school of music to sing the service Agriculture would also have been

studied

By the 15th and 16th centuries deterioration and corruption had left

Monymusk church and priory in common with religious houses

throughout the country in a bad way The prior and canons were in

perpetual strife the priory was in ruins and in 1554 what was left of

the monastic buildings was destroyed by fire through the negligence of

Prior Elphinstone was brought to trial in Aberdeen for murder theft

assault and adultery It is not known what the outcome of the trial was

The last prior was Robert Forbes who granted his relative William

Forbes of Monymusk the broken down and dilapidated buildings

All that was left was the church

After the reformation in Scotland Monymusk church was adapted to

suit reformed worship Over the years several structural changes were

made

Many valuable artefacts were acquired by the

church either purchased or given as gifts The

communion silver bought in 1691 the tower clock

made by William Lunan in 1792 and the bell bearing

the Latin inscription lsquoJohn Mowat Old Aberdeen

made me in 1748 I proclaim the Sabbaths I toll at

funeralsrsquo are all still in use today On display in the

vestibule is a Charles II bible purchased from

Alexander Oram in 1679

Much more recently in 1929 the organ was gifted

to the church by an elder of the parish and later

still the wrought iron cross candlesticks and

lectern crafted by local blacksmith Archibald

Cobban were donated Many people over many

years have supported our church with their time

talents and money and continue to do so today

We as the current custodians bear responsibility for the care and

stewardship of the church so that its long and proud history may

continue safely into future years

Prior Elphinstone

MONYMUSK BOULES TOURNAMENT

A donation of pound1600 was received from the organisers of this hugely enjoyable and

successful event More pictures can be viewed on the church website

Newsletter printed by Timepieces Kemnay
