10Strap yourself in!

Intrepid theatergoers, this season is for you: immediate, palpable and exhilarating.

on the heels of groundbreaking, breathtaking original works like The Nether and The Royale, we’re breaking two world premieres. our season starts out rocking with the angsty/punchy, totally original garage band musical The Black Suits. Then it closes tenderly with a fresh, new chapter in the american family drama: different words for the same thing.

plus, two legendary returns! First, The Second City decks our halls again with the comedy mash-up A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens. Then, following his triumph at the Taper in Waiting for Godot, Barry McGovern goes solo and toe to toe with Samuel Beckett in I’ll Go On.

Speaking of solo, our Douglas plus series spotlights three must-see solo performers at the top of their game as part of the radar L.a. Festival.

So strap in, sit back and thoroughly enjoy every moment of the inherent chemistry between the stage and audience that will continue to be the KDT’s signature.

eVerY roCK anD roLL FanTaSY begins in a garage. Scattered among the drums and guitars are the hopes, dreams, angst and rebellion of a new generation screaming to be heard.

Joe Iconis made a big Smash when he penned “Broadway Here I Come” for the NBC series. Now this Jonathan Larson Award-winning composer takes us behind the music as four teenage Long Island misfits band together to escape Garden City, to conquer the world, to be “cool and whatever.”

Now if the Black Suits can only win the St. Anne’s Battle of the Bands, their friendship just might survive the perilous transition to adulthood.

The Black Suits celebrates the wannabe rock star in all of us: with a score that sends us out of the theatre singing and longing to be eighteen again.

Scrooge, Tiny Tim, three ridiculous ghosts and a cast of The Second City’s funniest alums take the Douglas stage by storm, as wicked satire, daring improv and a host of guest celebs run rampant on the Victorian streets (of Culver City).

FoLLoWInG The SMaSh SuCCeSSeS of Waiting for Godot at the Taper and Krapp’s Last Tape at the Kirk Douglas last season, a new set of oddly charming and brilliantly compelling Beckett characters arrive in Los Angeles.

Barry McGovern, Ireland's greatest interpreter of Samuel Beckett (last seen as Godot’s Vladimir), returns to the opus he helped develop for the stage 25 years ago and has performed over 200 times all over the world.

I’ll Go On extracts indelible characters from the Beckett trilogy Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable: hailed by The Times Literary Supplement as “one of the most remarkable, most original, and most haunting prose works of the century.”

With these marvelously surly characters, the mordant observations on life from a Nobel Prize celebrated author and the remarkable Barry McGovern center stage as the catalyst, I’ll Go On is sure to be another must-see, sold-out Beckett theatrical event.

“I can’t go on, but I must go on. I will go on.”

Beckett-mania continues with more amazing McGovern!

“90 minutes of laughter, bitterness, compassion and verbal music to leave you rapt.”

aFTer puTTInG YearS and thousands of miles between them, Alice gets the call to return to her hometown: forcing her to revisit and re-examine the places, events and relationships that once defined her.

Neel Keller, who helmed last season’s thriller The Nether, assembles one of the largest casts in KDT history to create an unforgettable multi-ethnic family three generations deep: complete with all the love, laughter, complications and difficult choices that come with family.

Kimber Lee, a vibrant new voice and recipient of the prestigious 2013–14 PoNY fellowship awarded by the Lark Play Development Center, weaves a beguiling tapestry of contemporary Americana. KDT fans of fresh new works like The Royale and The Nether, as well as landmark American dramas like Our Town and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, will immediately respond to

this beautifully complex extended family and the power and lyrical grace of Lee’s storytelling.

CREATED AND PERFORMED BY roGer GuenVeur SMITh

History, poetry and tragedy collide when Smith tackles the thorny odyssey of Rodney King — deemed “the first reality TV star” — from the harsh initial glare of the national spotlight as the victim of police brutality to his involuntary martyrdom that ignited the LA riots to his lonely death at the bottom of a swimming pool. As with his previous Douglas triumphs (The Watts Tower Project and Juan and John), Smith seamlessly fuses facts and friction, motion and emotion into a gripping narrative that poses impossible questions while illuminating his subject with grace and empathy.

Can you control your outrage?

WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY LuIS aLFaroDIRECTED BY roBerT eGanWorLD preMIere

Highway 99 becomes an emotionally charged memory lane for Alfaro when his father has a stroke, compelling him to revisit the Central Valley of his childhood. As the family gathers around the ailing patriarch, the artist, activist and MacArthur Fellow (Electricidad, Oedipus el Rey) conjures up memories of his youth (complete with an old-school slide show): from picking grapes to gospel-infused tent revivals, family holidays to running away from home at 16. St. Jude is — in Alfaro’s words — “going from ‘what I am’ to who I was.’ ” And it’s a remarkable journey rich with laughter, pathos and surprising revelations.

Are you ready for the journey?

Trieu Tran and his family barely escaped Vietnam when he was six years old, but his perilous adventure was only beginning. An attack by pirates, a cold reception for refugees in Saskatchewan, a turbulent home life with an abusive father, poverty, Boston gang life, sexual assault. Uncle Ho…is a fight for survival against insurmountable odds, a story of redemption through education and art and ultimately an overwhelming act of bravery.
