Energy Services Federal Credit Union Merges with SPIRE

A partnership/merger between SPIRE and Energy Services Federal Credit Union (ESFCU) became effective July 1, 2019 after a 90% affirmative vote from ESFCU members.

Founded in 1933, ESFCU was a federally-chartered credit union with 1,400 members and over $10 million in assets primarily serving Xcel Energy employees, their family members, and contractors of Xcel Energy.

Located in St. Cloud, former ESFCU members will enjoy access to all of SPIRE’s 18 other locations, products, and services upon system conversion in mid-October.

Are you ready for some football? We are! SPIRE is proud to announce a multi-year partnership with Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Upon Cousins and SPIRE President/CEO Dan Stoltz meeting, it was clear that Kirk and SPIRE share the same values of giving back and improving lives. Known for being a positive role model in the football community, Cousins believes he and his family have a responsibility to be generous in impacting the world around us.

Cousins said, “I am so excited to be able to partner with a brand like SPIRE, which is committed to helping people in the community live their best lives.”

“Through his actions both on and off the field, Kirk leads with compassion and genuine authenticity,” said Stoltz. “We look forward to doing great things for the Minnesota community in partnership with Kirk.”

SPIRE will also be supporting the Julie & Kirk Cousins Foundation. Over Father’s Day weekend, SPIRE was the title sponsor of the first Kirk Cousins Football Camp to take place in Minnesota, at the University of St. Thomas. During

the camp, young athletes not only participated in drills and had fun, they also learned about character and doing the right thing. Cousins has hosted his camp in Michigan for the last six years.

Cousins played for Michigan State before being drafted by the Washington Redskins in 2012. He signed a three- year contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. Look for Cousins to appear in SPIRE television commercials and other advertising.

Named after hockey coach Herb Brooks, the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce’s H.E.R.B.I.E. award recognizes individuals and businesses who exemplify the traits inspired by its namesake: Humanitarian, Enterprising, Resilient, Bold, Inspirational and Ethical. Each year, one business and one individual is selected. Past individual winners include Robert Naegele Jr., founding owner of the Minnesota Wild, and former St. Paul mayor, Chris Coleman.

Stoltz received the award at the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce’s 20th Annual Foundation Luncheon.

Stoltz’s personal philosophy that “Life is about giving, not getting,” is evident in his leadership at SPIRE. He has built SPIRE into a nationally top-rated credit union. The list of accolades Stoltz has received includes: Northern Star Council’s 2018 Community Builder Award from the Boy Scouts of America, 2015 Outstanding Professional of

the Year from the Minnesota Credit Union Network, and 2017 Executive of the Year from DECA for leadership development in area high schools.

He is respected among business professionals, community leaders, and employees for his tremendous business acumen, contagious positivity and passion for giving back.

“We are so proud of Dan to be honored with the 2019 H.E.R.B.I.E. award. At SPIRE, we consider this a team award,” said Tom Heinzen, SPIRE board chairman. “The fact that Dan was recognized for such a prestigious award is indicative of the work of the entire SPIRE team. SPIRE Wins Two Desjardins Awards for Financial Education

New! Rate-Relock Option Available for Adjustable Rate Mortgages

SPIRE is happy to offer a rate-relock option on ARM loans. That means you can control your payment by re-locking your rate to a current rate.

The newly re-locked rate will be applied to the remaining term and principal balance of your existing SPIRE Adjustable Rate Mortgage. This option gives you peace of mind, especially during times of rising interest rates. There is no need for an application, credit check, or an appraisal. A fee applies. Simply contact SPIRE to let us know you would like to re-lock the rate on your ARM. The interest rate can be adjusted to the current rate for any SPIRE portfolio Adjustable Rate product offered at the time of the rate re-lock request. The fee to re-lock the rate is .50% of the unpaid principal balance and must be paid out of pocket prior to the rate modification. The loan must be current. The new payment will be based on the new rate, unpaid principal balance, and the remaining term, effective the next due date after the rate-relock has been executed. The amortization cannot be extended past the remaining term, however it can be shortened at the borrower’s request. Mortgage Insurance approval is required for loans that have Mortgage Insurance.

The Desjardins Awards recognize leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of financial literacy.

This is the fifth consecutive year that SPIRE won the Adult Desjardins Award. Throughout 2018, SPIRE had the opportunity to provide financial education to 2,000 adults throughout Minnesota.

For the third consecutive year, SPIRE has also won the Youth Desjardins Award. In a unique collaboration with BestPrep, a group of ten SPIRE employees worked with students from Minnehaha Academy’s Introduction to Business Class for a 12-week

eMentoring program. SPIRE reached a total of 585 students, educating them on successful auto buying, budgeting, housing options, credit management and more.

SPIRE’s winning entries will advance to the national competition, where they will compete with financial education projects from credit unions in other states.

The awards are named in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, the co-founder of the first cooperative financial institution in Lévis, Quebec in 1900. Desjardins was an ardent believer in the value of teaching children to save.
