The Lord of the Manor of Kirkham has the right tohold a weekly (Thursday) market with a variety ofproduce ranging from butchers to jewellery;the Lord of the Manor could also hold an annualRoyal Charter Fair for five days each June (St John) and a Manor Charter Fair for five days in October (St Luke) although the last two dateshave fallen into disuse. However the Kirkham and Wesham Business Group do hold monthlyLancashire Markets on the first Saturday of eachmonth on the Market Square with the best ofLancashire produce for sale.
Markets
The title of the Lord of the Manor has been purchased over the years after the initial lease to Sir John Fleetwood and the Clifton family. The Birley family became the first Lords of theManor to have paid approximately £8,000 for the privilege. The Sergeant family went on topurchase the title for just £300 in 1933. TheManorial Society of Great Britian has stated thattheir members hold a total of 37,998 Manors inthe United Kingdom.
The cobbled Market Square has the unique ‘Fishstones’ and lamp set to one side first recorded in 1748 when repairs were carried outto the original structure. The Market Square unfortunately lost some surrounding buildings in the 1960s but the majority remain unspoiledgiving an atmosphere of the heart of the townunchanged through centuries.
A survey undertaken by the University of Central Lancashire in 2007
found that Saturday was a day whenKirkham was at its quietest – not anymore!
Once a month the Lancashire Marketcomes to town with the best of produce.
This brings in a crowd of visitors, fromthose who commute during the week andcannot visit the Thursday market, to newvisitors to the town. All the shops report
an increase in trade on these days and Kirkham is a showcase - the ‘hub’
market town in the Fylde.Come and enjoy!

Since 1066 when its church was already in existence, the ancient market town of Kirkhamhas witnessed a long pageant of history.Recognizing the strategic importance of thehighest point in the Fylde the Roman army chose to build a fort in the last few years of the first century AD (see www.britishmuseum.co.uk).Kirkham developed into a thriving market townsurrounded by the lush agricultural plain of theFylde. At the heart of the town the Market Squarewith the ‘Fish stones’ and lamp – first lit in 1837- is at a crossroads surrounded by, with the exception of a small ‘60s shopping development,a conservation area of Georgian and earlier buildings, containing business and private housing.

Many excellent history books are available in the local bookshops which detail the history ofKirkham. The charter for a weekly market and afair at Midsummer had been granted to the townby Edward 1 in 1287 (source ‘Townships: Kirkham,A History of Lancashire’). However the History of Kirkham by Henry Fishwick gives a different date of 1269 for the Royal Charter. No supporting documentation for the 13th century is held inLancashire although www.nationalarchives.gov.ukmay be able to shed some light! Other buildingsof special note include the TSB Savings Bank onPoulton Street built in 1760 to replace an earliergirls’ school, as the Grammar School had refusedto allow more girls in 1701!
"a resident of Kirkham born and bred I have lived in Church street for 25 years,
our cottage is featured opposite. I have seenmany changes with Kirkham developing intoa large market town with an excellent range
of shops and housing. There is a strong community feel with thriving social groupsfor everyone. Kirkham Club day is always
exciting with a visiting fairground attractingchildren - of all ages. As residents we are
pleased to see Kirkham develop but also retain its sense of history and
lovely old houses, our cottage is our pride and joy."

Kirkham Grammar School, the oldest educationalfoundation in the Fylde is thought to date back to 1549 although 1551 is the earliest writtenrecord. The ‘new’ school on Ribby Road is a finebuilding which will celebrate its centenary in2011. Kirkham has many places of worship andtwo particularly fine churches are the ParishChurch of St Michael, Church Street dating from1822 and ‘The Willows’, St John the EvangelistRibby Road dating from 1845 designed byAugustus Welby Pugin, (see www.pugin.co.uk)the foremost Victorian architect who alsodesigned the Houses of Parliament and thePalace of Westminster.
A key date in Kirkham is Club Day, traditionallycelebrated the 2nd Saturday in June when all theChurches, Rose Queens, brass bands, children and

congregations dress in their finery to processthrough the streets. Kirkham’s Club Day is followed by many similar celebrations in othertowns and villages in the Fylde.
Over the centuries Kirkham has grown, supportedby industries brought by the advent of the railway in 1840. ‘King Cotton’ followed with linenand sailcloth later moving to create modern fabrics including nylon and gabardine. At thedecline of mill work the buildings diversified into small business units still in use today. At theheight of weaving Kirkham had well over 1,000looms in production; now just one remains on permanent display on Station Road. Other industries have also had their buildings re-used.Look around Kirkham and the Fylde and do awindmill check! There are many remaining nowturned into unique and enviable private houses, pubs and tourist centres.

Kirkham has been twinned with Ancenis in theLoire Valley, France since 1974 and with BadBrückenau in Bavaria, Germany since 1995.
Kirkham is constantly surprised and pleased by the amount of tourists it attracts from ex-servicemen from the USA and Canada whowere stationed here in WW2, to visitors searchingout independent shops from dolls houses to original watercolours, to bookshops with a regularstream of famous authors and artisan ice creamsand history books on the area. Kirkham has freecar parking with plenty of bistro cafés, coffeeshops and restaurants to relax in, a park to stroll through and architecture to admire. The weekly market attracts its own crowd withthe growing Lancashire market on the first

Ancenis is a beautiful town on the banks of theLoire. Dominating the town is the magnificentsuspension bridge taking you to the town of Liré.In spring and summer the gardens along the river are a mass of flowers. Of course, the valley of the Loire is famous for its chateaux, like Oudon, Angers, Palais Briau, Champtoceauxand Turmelière. Ancenis makes a great centre for touring the whole area. The area is a winegrowing region with many vine yards growing

Ancenis is about 230 miles south of Cherbourg ifyou are driving or about 30 miles from the airportat Nantes with flights from Manchester.
Bad Brückenau is a beautiful small village in Bavaria in the western part of the Rhön mountains. Bad Brückenau is located in the valleyof the River Sinn. The town is famous for its spawaters and the magnificent neo-classical GroßeKursaal building built in 1827. The old town ofBad Brückenau is home to a number of historicpubs and inns dating back to the 16th century.

Kirkham has weathered depressions and recessions, changes to manufacturing demands and localshopping trends through the years; today we are confident that Kirkham can retain its heritage, buildon a strong customer base and encourage residents and visitors to ‘shop local’. Kirkham has diversifiedinto a town which does not depend on solely traditional agricultural produce for its support. The millsmay not produce cloth but they do offer space for entrepreneurs to start up businesses and build upnew contact bases, all of which bring visitors and wealth to the town. The excellent transport links for car, rail and motorway ensure businesses relocate here. St. Georges Business Park is purpose builtfor larger companies, ‘The Crossroads’ is another purpose built office accommodation which is about to be opened with a local architects Croft Goode taking a major part of the space.
Housing is available in every style and size from beautifully maintained tiny 18th century cottages in the conservation area to new build executive homes; there is housing for every taste here.

Kirkham has excellent schools, both private andstate, from ages 3 to 18. Most primary schools arelinked to the Churches and offer excellent stan-dards. The secondary schools, Kirkham GrammarSchool and Carr Hill High School and Sixth FormCentre, work to produce students who will go onto achieve success in their chosen skills and talents.
In the next few years Kirkham will see furtherchange and improvements – the former gasworkson Orders Lane is a key site which hopefullywill become low cost affordable housing. The‘Renaissance’scheme which has already supportedand improved many individual businesses in thetown, will continue to make changes to the mainstreets bringing Kirkham to a traditional style ofmarket town shopping.

Kirkham and the Rural Fylde are very fortunatebecause we still have a very good communityspirit and participation which is characterised by the many groups which work together to provide services and improvements for residents.

Kirkham in Bloom was formed in 1991 by a groupof volunteers who wanted to improve the area byproviding floral features throughout the townand clearing up grot spots by creating amenityareas and historical and artistic features such asThe Loom Site on Station Road and The Tree forAll Seasons on Poulton Street. The group raisesfunding for all its activities and, along withWesham, has been the most successful area in theFylde in the North West in Bloom Competition, winning awards every year from 1992 through to2008. We have twice represented the North Westin the National Finals of Britain in Bloom andwere awarded a Silver Gilt. Although we havebeen very proud to win awards our main aim is toimprove the town for its residents and visitors.
The Friends of Kirkham Parks Group was startedin late 2008 and has a vibrant and hard workingcommittee. Our aim is to provide an exciting andchallenging play and leisure area for all ages inthe Memorial Gardens. We have been fortunatein attracting Lottery funding for a Teenzone and we are applying for other grants to providefacilities which will transform the gardens to givethe town an area it deserves and needs.
Kirkham and Rural Fylde Splash group wasformed to put together a business plan and package to keep the swimming pool open, after it was threatened with closure by the BoroughCouncil. The group was successful and has now,in conjunction with the YMCA, taken control ofthe pool. The group is planning to raise fundingto improve the facilities in the pool and will soonlaunch a “Buy a Bubble” scheme which we hopewill be well supported by residents of the RuralFylde. We urge all residents to use the pool tosecure its long term future.

make as much of the play area accessible to children and young people of different abilities.
In addition there will be attractive entrances, improved pathways, more seating and picnickingspots, with additional trees and shrubs being planted.
But the plans are not just about play and relaxation; it is anticipated that the open community space near Church Street will hostoccasional community fun days, out door theatre and displays.
The Regeneration Project will benefit the wholecommunity, in that carbon emissions will reduceas people choose to take their leisure time within the town.
Kirkham Memorial Park is known by many as aplace to walk the dog, play football or simply as a link between one end of town and the other.
But now the play area and pathways are set for a £230,000 redesign, if local group The Friendsof Kirkham Parks, are successful.
The group of volunteers have worked collabora-tively with residents, schools, interest groups and the council to create a Master Plan, which is being used to attract funding.
Plans are in place to replace the old play equipment with new, state-of-the-art swings, bouncers, climbing nets and slides, cable way and a bright train-themed toddler zone. Therewill be a natural boulder scramble slope, fitnesstrail and places to sit and relax. The aim is to

Kirkham and Wesham Business Group was
formed three years ago by like-minded business
people to support and improve the town. To date
we have worked with Fylde Borough Council,
Lancashire County Council and local architects
on the Kirkham 'Renaissance' scheme.
This has ensured grants are available to improve business potential by renovating shoppremises to Georgian market town standards. This has increased employment and footfall for independent shops and businesses.
Within this scheme businesses can also benefitfrom advice and internal reorganization to maximize potential. KWBG also arrange training for business from Preston College, from window dressing to finance. For a smallfee each year KWBG has been the prime mover in commissioning this guide, promoting Kirkham through the media, launching a monthlyLancashire Market and improved town signage.
Our latest initiative is the Heroes Welcome.
We really mean to put Kirkham on the map as
the 'hub' market town in the Fylde.
"we are very proud
of our achievements
in 3 years and we
will continue to be a
pro-active force for
the future of Kirkham
and Wesham"
"KWBG has enabled Fylde Cycles t/a Fylde Auto Parts Limited
to access match funding from Fylde Borough Council and Lancashire County
Council to expand and improve our business premises by 55 square metres new space and 238 square metres improved space.
We could not have hoped to have achieved this without their support.Fylde Cycles now has a display area,
workshops and storage safeguarding 4 jobs and created additional
employment for an extra member of staff."
