The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children. Cooperation, not competition, is the very basis of future survival and of existing life systems. Permaculture is guided by the following three overarching ethics:

Care of the Earth: includes the care of all living and non-living things, plants, animals, land, water, air

Care of People: promotes self-reliance and community responsibility and access to resources necessary for existence

Benevolent Distribution of Goods and Resources: setting limits to population and consumption; sharing and distributing any surplus yield

Generally, any actions that demonstrate the Three Ethics can be considered Permaculture in practice. Come and learn how you can put Permaculture into practice in your life.

In this intensive short course we will learn to identify trees and plants and come to an understanding of their significance in the landscape and delineate how to use plants for food, medicine and utility. We will observe trees and plants in their natural environment, and through observation, find methods to employ them as windbreaks, shelterbelts, habitat for animals, and companions for other plants that contribute to health and increased yields. We will discuss and examine plant guilds, gardening, food forests, basic biology, basic botany, effects of weather on vegetation, interactions with animals, and the processes of various habitats and ecosystems (including farm ecosystems). We will cover plant propagation, grafting, seed saving and more. We will explore prairie, woodland, savanna, pasture, gardens, farm fields, and other ecosystems found at or near Kinstone. Come join us! Daily free breakfast, lunch and dinner available for registered students. Children ages 13-17 may register with a registered adult.

This workshop will focus on building a cob style rocket mass heater. It will be constructed inside the straw-clay cabin at Kinstone and will include a bench. The stove’s thermal mass stores and may radiate heat for days after a single firing. Over the course of this weekend workshop you will build a rocket mass heater and by doing so, learn how to: mix and apply cob and earthen mortars from sand, clay and water; lay bricks for the combustion chamber and manifold, use clay slip and perlite to insulate around the combustion chamber and heat riser, safely install and connect stove pipe for the exhaust/chimney, and more. REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registration for a Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture course is easy. We give you several ways to register: by mail, phone, or email as described below. Upon receipt of a completed registration form and payment of the tuition deposit, your space in the selected course is reserved. Within two weeks we will send you a confirmation email including a confirmation letter, a materials list, other course specific information that may be applicable, a list of local accommodation options and a liability release form that must be signed prior to the start of class.

How to Register

For courses with a published course fee under $150, full payment for the course fee and the materials fee (if any) is required at the time of registration. For courses with a published course fee of $150 or more, a deposit equal to at least 33% of the course tuition is due upon registration. Any remaining amount is due two weeks before the start of the class. Special payment arrangements may be possible; contact the Kinstone Academy office to discuss. Payment must be in US funds only and may be made by cash (in person), check, money order, or credit card via Paypal. Do not send cash through the mail. Please make checks and money orders payable to Kinstone. You will find a link on our website to pay for each course using PayPal or using a credit card via PayPal. You can also call us for specific PayPal instructions if you prefer. Please contact us directly if you have any questions regarding these payment options.

Payment and Deposit Information

Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture offers many courses at two different rates: a less-expensive “early-bird” rate available to those who sign up for a course more than four weeks before it begins and a “regular” rate for those signing up within 4 weeks of a course’s start date. See the individual course descriptions for specific rates. We offer an additional 10% discount for certain courses that have a multiple-course discount associated with them, for military personnel and for couples who register for a course together; however only one of these discounts may be applied per person per course. These discounts apply to tuition only, not materials or supply fees.

Tuition Discounts

Classes at Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture are intentionally kept small and may fill quickly. We recommend that you register early to ensure your participation. The registration deadline for any course is two weeks before the start of the course unless otherwise specified in the Course Description. We reserve the right to cancel courses if there is insufficient enrollment by the registration deadline. Cancellations will be posted on our website and registered participants will be notified via email or phone. Late registration may be possible due to student cancellations; please call the office regarding last minute openings.

Course Sizes and Registration Deadline

Kinstone Academy of Applied Permaculture will maintain a waiting list for those wishing to sign up for classes that are already full. We will contact the persons on the waiting list only if space becomes available. Further, we will use these lists to determine if and when to offer another course on a given topic. Persons on the waiting list are given first priority should we decide to run an extra session of a given course.
