June/July 2018 Kinsmen Connection
2
Summertime is often a time when the
rhythm of the household changes.
This is certainly the case if you have
school age children in the home.
Even if you do not have children in
the home, a change of season
brings about a change in rhythm or
at least the traffic is a little lighter. A change of season may
be the perfect time to introduce something new in your
household. I recommend FAITH5.
According to Dr. Rich Melheim, who spoke recently at our
Synod Assembly, the five steps of the FAITH5 are:
Step One: Share highs and lows. Name something good
and bad you experienced today. Can't think of a personal
one? Check out the headlines from the news and learn
empathy and compassion for the broader world.
Step Two: Read a verse from your Bible. This can be
reading a scripture passage from worship or a passage
from a daily devotional.
Step Three: Talk about how the verse relates to highs and
lows. Unpack the verse a bit. What does it mean in your
own words? How might it relate to where you are today in
your highs and lows?
Step Four: Pray for one another's highs and lows, for your
family or household, and for the world. Simply talk to God,
thank Jesus for the good, and ask the Holy Spirit for
guidance in specific problems.
Pastor’s word Step Five: Bless one another. Trace the sign of the cross
on one another's forehead or palm as a reminder that you
belong to God and to one another.
Our household has been using this tool to reflect on our
day and help us hear what God is saying to our family.
Sometimes we just share highs and lows and sometimes
we use the whole FAITH5. Sometimes the conversation is
during a meal; sometimes the conversation is in the car;
sometimes the conversation is at bedtime. And sometimes,
using technology like Skype and Facetime, I can be
included in this conversation when I am away from home.
And, FAITH5 is portable. You can let the FAITH5 guide
your conversations around the table, as you travel, in your
small group or wherever your summer takes you. We have
invited guests at dinner to participate in this conversation
as appropriate, if only to share highs and lows and add
their prayer concerns to our prayers. Technology could
allow you to include relatives from far away in this
conversation from time to time.
Martin Luther emphasized the home as a primary location
for faith development. He likened mothers and fathers to
apostles and priests because it is they who have a primary
role in sharing the gospel. We hope this tool will be
helpful to you in your personal devotions and faithful
conversations throughout the summer.
