Kinoma Play and Kinoma FreePlay Quick-Start Guide Note Everything in this guide applies to Kinoma Play for Windows Mobile, Kinoma Play for Symbian/S60, and Kinoma FreePlay for Windows Mobile, except where noted.

Install Kinoma Play is delivered as a standard installer file, a .cab file for Windows Mobile and .sisx for Symbian/S60. To install, open the file on your phone and follow the instructions.

When asked to choose an install location, we recommend that on Windows Mobile you choose Device (instead of Storage Card), and on Symbian/S60 that you choose Phone memory (instead of Memory card).

Tip: Your phone may call its removable memory “Memory card” or “Storage Card”. This document uses “Storage Card” to refer to a phone’s removable memory.

To uninstall, use Remove Programs in your phone’s Settings on Windows Mobile, and Application Manager > Installed Apps on Symbian/S60.

Activate Before you can use Kinoma Play, you must activate it by entering a Purchase Key. Activation should be performed “over the air,” which means you need to have a data connection available the first time you use Kinoma Play. Each purchase key can be used for only one phone.

Kinoma FreePlay To activate Kinoma FreePlay, enter your email address when prompted and select Activate. You’ll soon receive email with instructions for completing activation.

Network access Kinoma Play is a social media browser with a strong emphasis on internet media. To avoid unexpected charges, you need to either have an unlimited data plan or be connected via Wi-Fi (if your phone supports it).

Tip: If you’re using a Wi-Fi connection, disable low-power mode because it can significantly reduce available network bandwidth.

Launch On Windows Mobile phones, launch Kinoma Play using your phone’s Start menu. On Symbian/S60 phones, launch Kinoma Play from the application menu.

Getting around

Soft keys on Windows Mobile Kinoma Play uses your phone’s soft keys as follows:

• The left soft key is Back, and it acts like the Back button in a web browser (as does your phone’s dedicated Back key, if it has one).

• The right soft key is Menu, and it shows or hides the menu pod (see the “Menu pod” section below).

If you’re playing audio or video, the Main screen displays the Now Playing item for the left soft key. When you see a Now Playing item, pressing the left soft key jumps directly to it.

Soft keys on Symbian/S60 Kinoma Play uses your phone’s soft keys as follows:

• The right soft key is Back, and it acts like the Back button in a web browser (as does your phone’s dedicated Back key, if it has one).

• The left soft key is Menu, and it shows or hides the menu pod (see the “Menu pod” section below).

If you’re playing audio or video, the Main screen displays the Now Playing item for the right soft key. When you see a Now Playing item, pressing the right soft key jumps directly to it.

Note that the screenshots used in this document follow Windows Mobile conventions rather than those described here.

5-way control pad If you have a 5-way control pad, you can use it to navigate and select items:

Go Home The Home screen (described in the next section) is your “home base”, and is very easy to get to from anywhere. Just touch-and-hold Back soft key, or press-and-hold the Center or Back key.

Menu pod Kinoma Play’s menu pod provides fast access to many powerful capabilities. Think of it as a carousel of menus that are always optimized for what you’re doing.

Press Menu to show the menu pod. Use Left and Right to move between menus, or just flick left and right if you have a touchscreen phone.

These are the menus you’ll see in the menu pod when you’re at the Main screen in Kinoma Play:

The menu pod always includes Media and Settings menus. Additional menus are often available to provide functionality specific to the current screen — for example, the Player menu is available only when you’re at the Main screen.

Home screen The customizable Home screen is your starting point for Kinoma Play. (Kinoma FreePlay has a simpler Main screen, described in the next section.)

The icon at the bottom center of the screen show how many pages there are. The brightest dot represents where you are now. In the screenshot above, it shows that you’re at the leftmost of two pages.

Page 5: Kinoma Play - Quick-Start Guide

You can have up to nine pages. Here’s what the icon looks like when you’re at the top-left page:

To move from page to page, just flick or use the 5-way control pad.

Moving icons To move an icon, first touch and hold it to enter Edit Home Screen mode. When editing the Home screen, the selected icon wiggles to show that it’s editable.

Drag the icon where you want it to go, or on non-touch phones use the 5-way. When you hit the edge of a page, a subtle highlight border appears to indicate that you’re about to move it to another page.

If you drag an icon beyond existing pages, Kinoma Play automatically creates a new page for you when possible. The Home screen can be up to 3 pages wide and 3 pages tall.

Add apps to your Home screen Apps are added to the Home screen automatically when they’re installed.

If you want to manually add an app to the Home screen, touch and hold its icon until a menu icon appears. On non-touch phones, select its icon and show the menu pod with the Menu soft key.

Then, choose Media > Add To and select Home Screen.

Add almost anything to your Home screen In a feature exclusive to Kinoma Play, you can add nearly anything to your Home screen. These links are called ZoomLinks, and you can think of them as super-shortcuts.

For example, you might want to create a Home screen page of your favorite radio station presets. To do that, select the station you want to add, press the right soft key to show the menu pod, then choose Media > Add To and select Home Screen.

Tip: On a touchscreen phone, you can touch-and-hold the station you want to add until a menu icon appears above your finger. That allows you to select something and display the menu pod with one gesture.

ZoomLinks can link to any station from any service. They can link to stations in Kinoma Guide, from Live365, from SHOUTcast — if you can play it, you can add it to your Home screen.

In another Kinoma Play exclusive, ZoomLinks can link to individual application features.

For example, you might want to create a ZoomLink to the Facebook app’s “Update Status” feature. Touch and hold the feature until a menu icon appears, then choose Media > Add To and select Home Screen.

Here’s what it looks like to use your new Facebook ZoomLink from your Home screen:

Here are some other things you might want to make ZoomLinks for:

• Favorite podcasts from Kinoma Guide • Friends’ Flickr photostreams • Favorite YouTube videos • Favorite albums • Audible audiobooks you’re enjoying

The customization possibilities are nearly endless.

My Media Files Find and play the video, audio, and pictures on the phone or a storage card. A menu accessible through the Playlists category lets you create custom playlists.

Kinoma Guide Consult this constantly updated guide to Kinoma Play–compatible content. The Browse by Provider category is a great way to get introduced to the depth and breadth of content in the guide.

Search Search third-party internet and content services (such as YouTube) for video, audio, and pictures.

Services Access premium services such as Live365, Audible, and Flickr. Most can also be used by nonmembers, but members get additional features (for example, access to all Live365 stations).

History Display content you’ve viewed or listened to recently, similar to how your web browser remembers previous pages. Clear your history by choosing Privacy from the Player menu.

Favorites Display content you’ve marked as a favorite. Mark favorites by choosing Add to Favorites from the Media menu.

Playing

Audio and video The keys for controlling playback in Kinoma Play’s audio/video view are:

If your phone has a touchscreen you can touch the Previous or Next buttons directly, or touch-and-hold them to fast-reverse and fast-forward.

Or, just drag the play head at the top of the screen to the time you want to play.

If your phone has volume keys, you can use them to adjust the volume of the Now Playing item from anywhere within Kinoma Play. You can also choose Audio from the Settings menu to adjust the volume.

For audiobooks with internal chapters, use Left and Right to move through the chapters.

Pictures The picture viewer in Kinoma Play has three modes: Browse, Zoom & Rotate, and Pan.

Use the Center key to switch between modes. An icon will appear briefly to confirm the mode you’re in, showing you the effect of pressing control pad keys in that mode. In Browse mode, for example, pressing Left or Right takes you to another picture.
