Dual Credit Program Information A Dual Credit Program allows eligible students to earn college credit for certain high school courses in which they are enrolled. Dual credit courses are high school courses that adhere to college-level standards. The primary purpose of the Dual Credit Program is to enable students who meet the requirements to earn college credits while completing their high school education. A successfully completed dual credit course earns the student college credit which may be applied toward an associate degree and/or may transfer to other colleges and universities. Under the High School/Dual Credit Agreement, students may not enroll in more than two dual credit courses per semester (6 to 8 credit hours). Universities’ Acceptance of Dual Credit Courses It must be noted that each college or university reserves the right to (1) accept college credits for transfer credit from another college or university and (2) apply them appropriately to a student’s transcript. It is the responsibility of the student to seek information from institutions in which he/she desires to transfer concerning the acceptance of dual credit course work and its application to a degree in the desired major. Students should verify with the college they plan to attend after high school graduation that the college credits earned through the dual credit program will transfer and apply toward a college degree. Poor performance of Students in a Dual Credit Course (Grade Below “C”) Students who are performing poorly (a grade of D or F) in a dual credit course will be dropped from the dual credit program. Student Academic Services Students enrolling in dual credit courses will be given the same rights and opportunities as all KHS students. Examples include library services, computer lab services, tutoring, student activities, and support services. Many of these services are on the Internet and can be accessed at www.lonestar.edu .

***SENIORS PLEASE NOTE:

The senior exemption policy DOES NOT apply to Dual Credit courses. You MUST take the final exam for a Dual Credit class.

STEP 3: COMPLETE THE TSI PRE-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY

Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) Directions Before you can take the TSI Assessment, you must participate in a Pre-Assessment Activity. Also, you will not be allowed to take the TSI Assessment until you have completed this activity.

Go to: http://lonestar.edu > Click on myLoneStar or go directly to https://my.lonestar.edu

1. Enter your username/ID and password

2. Click on the “Complete your Pre-Assessment Activity now.”

3. Complete the following video.

STEP 4: MEET ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

After you have completed your Lone Star Online Application

(www.lonestar.edu) you may then take your placement test for dual credit

classes. A pre-assessment activity must be completed through your

MyLoneStar account prior to getting your test ticket. See page 9 for a list

of eligibility requirements for each course offered at KHS. TSI testing

will be don at KHS on March 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Students who are unable

to test on these dates may schedule a test on the Lone Star campus.

A test ticket may be obtained from a dual credit Advisor Monday

through Friday between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, or from an academic

advisor during regular advising hours (Monday, Tuesday, Friday 8:00

am to 5:00 pm, Wednesday and Thursday 8:00 to 7:00 pm or

Saturday 9:00 to 1:00pm. Please sign in at least ½ hour prior to closing)

To obtain a placement test ticket:

Go to the Student Conference Center Building (SCC) at 20000 Kingwood Drive, check in at the

Advising/Admissions desk and ask to see either Lynn Deal, Faye Juricek or Toni Seiter, who will write

you a test ticket. An academic advisor can also write a test ticket, but will not be able to answer specific

dual credit questions.

As a dual credit student your first placement test is at no cost to you. Please allow four hours to complete the

test and bring a picture ID. You must complete the pre-assessment activity before coming to campus to take

the placement test. This activity is available through your MyLonestar account. The Testing Center is located

in room 223 in the SCC building, the same building as advising, but on the second floor.

The Testing Center is open Monday through Thursday 8:00 am to 9:00 pm, Friday and Saturday 8:00 am

to 4:30 pm. The testing center phone number is (281)-312-1476.

*Please note that Lone Star College will be closed March 9-13, and April 3-5 for Mid-term

break and Spring Holiday break.

Commonly Asked Dual Credit Questions Do I have to wait until my junior or senior year to take a Dual Credit class? In general, state policy requires that a student must be a junior to enroll in dual credit courses; however, there is one exception. The college has made an exception for students who were in the Spanish Immersion Program to allow them to begin taking Spanish language courses in 9th grade if they have continually been enrolled in the Spanish Immersion Program AND meet all other college entry requirements.

If I am a “returning” Dual Credit student, do I have to retest? It depends on the situation. Students that are already in the Lone Star system, and are taking a higher level course do not need to retest. EXCEPTION...last year a student took a history or foreign language class, and is now taking a math or science class and they did not meet the math requirement last year. They need to retest or bring an outside score for proof (ACT- SAT) only an issue if they used PSAT as a rising 11th grader. How do I qualify? Step one: Choose Dual course on Bridges. Step two: Apply to Lone Star. Step three: Meet the testing requirements set by Lone Star College. What does it cost? Tuition is free, pay only for fees (average $66 for a 3 credit class). See tuition schedule on page 7. Who teaches Dual Credit? Humble ISD/Kingwood High School teachers certified by Lone Star College. Online courses are taught by Lone Star professors. Where do I get my books? Humble ISD provides books for dual credit classes at no cost. How many Dual Credit classes may be taken? A student may take a maximum of two dual credit classes per semester. Do all colleges accept Dual Credit? Public colleges and universities in the state of Texas accept dual credit courses. However, how those credits transfer depends upon the college and the degree the student is seeking. See the Texas Common Course Numbering website for specific information on how a particular course transfers to a particular college or university in the state. Students must check with private and out of state schools about how and if these courses will transfer. Some private and out of state colleges also accept dual credit; however, students must check with these individual institutions to determine what will and will not transfer. Do my Dual Credit grades transfer to Texas public state colleges? Grades and courses are listed on the Lone Star College transcript. How those courses and grades are transcripted varies by receiving institution. Similarly, how the grades are treated with regard to GPA at the college or university varies by institution. Some include these grades as a part of the college or university overall GPA and some do not. Check with your college or university about that institution’s policies.

What do I need to know about using STAAR EOC or PSAT scores? Students can use their STAAR scores to meet college readiness. PSAT can be used for 11th grade ONLY. If students do not pass Dual Credit courses in their junior year with at least a C using PSAT scores, they cannot be placed using their PSAT scores again in 12th grade.

Things to Remember

Grades in dual credit classes become a permanent part of the student’s college record.

Courses are taught at KHS during the regular school day. Students do not need to travel to Lone Star College for class. Maintain a college grade of C (HS grade of 70) or better to remain in the program. Special approval is needed to take more than two dual credit courses per semester. Compare college and high school course calendars. They are not always the same. This is especially important in an online course. Payment must be made to Lone Star College by the due date or dual credit courses will be dropped. Withdrawal from a Dual Credit course requires notification of your high school and completion of the necessary paper work. The Lone Star College calendar has drop dates that are essential for dropping a course without a grade and dropping with a “W” as it will affect a student’s college transcript. Credit Transfer Courses may not transfer to all universities. Please verify if courses will transfer to college of choice: www.lonestar.edu/university-transfer-guide.htm OR www.tccns.org/.
