PRE-MASTERS PREPARATION COURSESIfyouwouldliketoenrolononeofourpractice-basedmasterscoursesbutdon’thavetheappropriateportfoliorequiredforentry,Kingstonofferstwoprogrammestohelpyoudevelopyourportfoliototherelevantstandardandprepareyouforpostgraduatestudy.

TheGraduateDiplomainArchitectureisthesecondofthreeseparatequalificationsthatallarchitectseducatedintheUKmustgaintopracticeasanarchitectintheUKortherestofEurope.Assuch,wearevalidatedbytheArchitectsRegistrationBoard(ARB)oftheUKandtheRoyalInstituteofBritishArchitects(RIBA).
ThecourseisopentostudentswhohavealreadycompletedaninitialdegreeinarchitectureintheUKorabroad,andweofferpathwaysforqualificationintheUKthatcanbecompletedwhilestudyingfortheGraduateDiploma.
AlthoughtheSchooloperateswithintheguidelinesstipulatedbyprofessionalaccreditation,wehavedevelopedourownparticularqualitiesforthecourse,relatedtoourpositionwithintheFaculty.TheFaculty’sfantasticworkshopfacilitiesandworkspacespresentmanyopportunitiesforourstudentstomakethingsasapartofthedesignprocess,and,therefore,offerkeysupporttoourfocuson‘making’asaprimarypartofthedesignprocess.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDYYouwillbeintroducedtoabroadunderstandingofthedesignprocess,whichisculturalandexperimentalaswellastechnicalandmanagerial.TheHistoryandTheorymodulerevisitsperiodsfromtheAncientNearEasttoModernisminanattempttocreateabetterunderstandingoftherelevanceofhistory,andourtechnologyprofessionalpracticemodulesseektocontextualisemuchoftheinformationusedwithinthevariousUnitprogrammes.
Thecourseseekstoencourageyoutodevelopahighlevelofcriticalawarenessofyouracademicdiscipline,aswellasofyourownpractice.Italsoaimstoassistyoutoidentifyanddevelopyourparticularstrengthsandinterests,whileexpectingyoutomeetaminimumlevelofcompetenceacrossallcoresubjects.
CurrentlywerunverticalUnits,allowingyoutoeitherchangeafteroneyearorremainwiththesamedesigntutorsforthewholeofyourtimeatKingston.TheUnittutorsarefrompracticesthroughoutLondonandofferavarietyofapproachestoarchitecturaldesign.Theyaresupportedbyourtechnicalstaffwholiaisewithtutorsandstudentstoensurethatsufficientsupportisavailableatkeystagestodevelopthetechnicalaspectsoftheprojects.
BytheendoftheGraduateDiplomaCourse,youwillhavedevelopedyourunderstandingofthepoeticandtectonicaspectsofarchitecture,whilealsoinvolvingyourselfinKingston’smaininitiativeof‘thinkingthroughmaking’.
EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIESAnnuallyweofferfourexchangeplacestostudyinEuropeforonesemester:twoattheZürcherHochschuleinWinterthur,Switzerland;andtwoattheRoyalAcademyofFineArtsinCopenhagen.InZürichthelecturesareinGerman(HochDeutsch)butstudiosupervisionscanbeinEnglish;while,inCopenhagen,Denmark,allteachingisinEnglish.

FOLLOW-ON MASTERS DEGREEThenextcoupleofyearswillseeconsiderablechangesinarchitecturaleducationintheUK.Oneofthekeydevelopmentsisthepossiblerevalidationofthediploma(Part2)asamastersdegree,tobringitinlinewithitsEuropeancounterparts.KingstonUniversityisofferingauniqueopportunitytorecentandforthcominggraduatesofthediploma(whilethisisstillinplace)toupgradetheirstatustoamastersthrougha‘follow-on’studyofoneintensivesemesterfulltimeortwosemestersparttime.Followingthesuccessfulcompletionofalldiplomawork,studentsenrolforafurtherfourmodules,whichconsistofawrittendissertationonanappropriatesubjecttobedecidedwitheachstudentinconsultationwiththecoursedirectorandtheirallocatedsupervisor(s).

Thecontextwithinwhicharchitectureiscreatedhaschangedsignificantlyinrecentyears,ashavethewaysinwhicharchitectureispractised.Ifyouwouldliketosharpenyourexistingskillsanddevelopnewskillsandstrategiesinthecomplexanddiversearenaofarchitecturalpractice,thiscourseisideal.Itenablesyoutotakethetimetore-informandredefineyourselfasanindependent,competentandreflectivepractitioner.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDYThisisataughtprogrammewithastrongresearchcomponent.Thefull-timeversionextendsoveronecalendaryearstartinginlateSeptember.FormalteachingisconcentratedintheperiodbetweenOctoberandMay.Someguidedresearchalsotakesplaceduringthatperiod,whiletheperiodbetweenJuneandlateAugustisentirelydevotedtoself-directedstudyandresearch.Thepart-timeversionofthecourseextendsovertwocalendaryears,withformalteachingononedayperweek.Part-timestudentssharetherespectivetaughtandresearchmoduleswithfull-timestudents,spreadover24months.

Thetermcreativeeconomyhasbeencoinedtoreflecttheextraordinarygrowthintheimportanceofpeople’sideasandcreativityintoday’seconomy.This‘new’economyisfoundedoncreativityandthecreativeprocess.Crucially,itdependsupontherelationshipbetweenthosewhogeneratenewideasandthosewhocanhelptobuildvaluefromcreativity.Whetheryouarea‘creative’oramanager,whetheryouworkforanestablishedorganisationorplantosetupyourownentrepreneurialventure,theMACEProgrammeoffersyouanewperspectivefromwhichtostudyanddeveloptheskillsnecessarytoachievesuccess.
Thecoursesencouragehighlevelsofcreativity,networkingand‘learningbydoing’.Youwillengagefullyincollaborativeandmultidisciplinaryteamworkandshouldalsobepreparedtorespondtoindustry-generatedprojects.Attheendofthedegreeyouwillhavetheoptionoftakingadissertationorapractice-basedresearchproject,whichmayleadontothedevelopmentofyourownentrepreneurialcreativeventure.

PHASE 1: THE CREATIVE ECONOMY – IN PRACTICE CORE MODULES (60 CREDITS)The Creative Economy Thiscornerstonemoduleprovidesyouwithhands-onexperienceoflifeinthecreativeeconomythroughworkingtogethertocreate,designandmanageaviablecreativeenterpriseproject.Thiscreativeprojectwillformthecontextforsubsequentlearningthroughoutthecourse.
Contemporary Issues in the Creative Economy Inthismoduleyouwilldevelopanunderstandingofcontemporaryissuesinthecreativeeconomy,withparticularreferencetoissuesofsustainability,therelationshipbetweenproductionandconsumptionandcriticalanalysis.
Managing Creativity and Innovation Thismoduleaimstodevelopyourentrepreneurialmanagementbehaviours,encouraginganapproachtolearningthatcopeswithandenjoysuncertainty,risksandcomplexity.Thecorecurriculumofthismodulewillexplorethetensionsbetweencreativityandmanagementandhowthesecanbereconciled.
Leadership in the Creative Economy Thismoduleencouragesyoutolearnexperientiallyaboutleadershipthroughperformance,anddevelopconceptualunderstandingofcreativeleadershipandhowitdiffersfrommoretraditionalapproaches.Whereappropriate,youwillapplyyourlearningtoleadershiprolesinthecreativeprojectdevelopedwithinTheCreativeEconomymodule.

MA/MFA COMMUNICATION DESIGN PROGRAMMEWith communication design becoming one of the fastest-changing sectors of the creative economy, Kingston University has introduced a suite of MFA (Master of Fine Arts) courses to complement its reviewed portfolio of MAs in communication design.

RESEARCH FOR THE 21ST CENTURYTheFacultyofArt,Design&Architecturehasawell-establishedandinternationallyrenownedresearchculturethatencouragesandsupportshigh-quality,innovativeresearchthroughpractice,historyandtheory.Thisrichspectrumencompassesthecriticalpracticesoffineartists,curatorsandculturalcommentatorsandhistorians,alongsidethatofdesigners,filmmakers,architects,townplannersandsurveyors,allofwhomhaveextensiveprofessional,industrialandcommerciallinks.Ouraimistofosteradynamicandstimulatingenvironmentthatrealisesandsupportsindividualandcollaborativeresearchprojects.Thisisachievedthroughanexchangeofideasandpracticeswithinandacrossthedisciplines,directlybenefittingthewideracademiccommunityaswellasindustry,businessandthepublic.
TheFaculty’sresearchactivitieswererecognisedasbeingworld-leadingandofinternationalexcellenceinthe2008nationalResearchAssessmentExercise,whichratesthequalityofallresearchinUKuniversities.ThisassessmenthasmeantthattheUniversity’sresearchgrantfromthehighereducationfundingbodyforEnglandhasnearlytripled.Centraltotheseachievementsareourfiveestablishedresearchcentresthatprovideastronginfrastructureandsupportivecommunityforstaffandstudentresearch.Ourpostgraduatestudentsareanimportantpartofthiscommunity,whichalsoincludestutorsandsupervisors,visitingprofessorsandresearchfellows.

In2008,KingstonUniversity,inpartnershipwithStGeorge’s,UniversityofLondon,establishedanewcentrefordesignandinnovationwithaparticularfocusonbenefittingthehealthandculturalsectors.SituatedatKnightsPark,‘Innoversity’bringstogetherdesigners,researchersandengineerswhoworktogethertocomeupwithsolutionstoreal-lifebusinesschallenges.Ourpostgraduatestudentsparticipateintheseprojectsandalsobenefitfromtheopportunitiestobeinvolvedinliveprojectsthroughthewell-establishedindustrialandbusinesspartnershipsthathavecontributedtothecontinuingsuccessofresearchprojectsacrosstheFaculty.

Asharedambitionofallresearchersistoleadtheknowledgeandunderstandingoftherelationshipbetweenthesustainabilityagendaandtheoperationofrealestatemarkets.Theyareengagedinarangeofexcitingprojectsinhighlyfocusedandspecialistareasrelatingtoplacemaking,investment-worthmodels,contaminatedandbrownfieldland,taxationandfiscalincentivesandthevaluationofheritageassets.

STANLEY PICKER GALLERYEstablishedin1997,theStanleyPickerGallery,basedattheFacultyofArt,Design&Architecture,holdsarollingprogrammeoflecturesandexhibitions.Itworkswithartists,designersandmusicianstofacilitateandprovideaccesstoabroadprogrammeofexhibitions,collaborativeprojects,mixed-mediaeventsandeducationinitiatives.TheStanleyPickerFellowshipProgrammeprovidesleadingfineartanddesignpractitionerswiththeopportunitytodevelopaninnovativeprojectofinternationalstanding,whichisthenpremieredattheGallery.Tofindoutmore,visitwww.kingston.ac.uk/picker
DORICH HOUSE MUSEUMDorichHouse,whichstandsontheKingstonsideofRichmondPark,isafascinatingexampleof1930s’modernism.Itwascreatedbytheunusualandbohemiancouple,sculptorDoraGordineandherhusbandRichardHare,whodesignedandlivedinthepropertyuntil1991.
Since1994,theGradeIIlistedbuildinghasbeenrenovatedandrestoredbyKingstonUniversity,whichnowcaresforthehouseandthecouple’sextensivecollectionsofsculptureandRussianImperialart.IthasbeendevelopedasaresourceandstudycentreandwasawardedRegisteredMuseumstatusin2004.
