TheGraduateDiplomainArchitectureisthesecondofthreeseparatequalificationsthatallarchitectseducatedintheUKmustgaintopracticeasanarchitectintheUKortherestofEurope.Assuch,wearevalidatedbytheArchitectsRegistrationBoard(ARB)oftheUKandtheRoyalInstituteofBritishArchitects(RIBA).

ThecourseisopentostudentswhohavealreadycompletedaninitialdegreeinarchitectureintheUKorabroad,andweofferpathwaysforqualificationintheUKthatcanbecompletedwhilestudyingfortheGraduateDiploma.

AlthoughtheSchooloperateswithintheguidelinesstipulatedbyprofessionalaccreditation,wehavedevelopedourownparticularqualitiesforthecourse,relatedtoourpositionwithintheFaculty.TheFaculty’sfantasticworkshopfacilitiesandworkspacespresentmanyopportunitiesforourstudentstomakethingsasapartofthedesignprocess,and,therefore,offerkeysupporttoourfocuson‘making’asaprimarypartofthedesignprocess.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDYYouwillbeintroducedtoabroadunderstandingofthedesignprocess,whichisculturalandexperimentalaswellastechnicalandmanagerial.TheHistoryandTheorymodulerevisitsperiodsfromtheAncientNearEasttoModernisminanattempttocreateabetterunderstandingoftherelevanceofhistory,andourtechnologyprofessionalpracticemodulesseektocontextualisemuchoftheinformationusedwithinthevariousUnitprogrammes.

Thecourseseekstoencourageyoutodevelopahighlevelofcriticalawarenessofyouracademicdiscipline,aswellasofyourownpractice.Italsoaimstoassistyoutoidentifyanddevelopyourparticularstrengthsandinterests,whileexpectingyoutomeetaminimumlevelofcompetenceacrossallcoresubjects.

CurrentlywerunverticalUnits,allowingyoutoeitherchangeafteroneyearorremainwiththesamedesigntutorsforthewholeofyourtimeatKingston.TheUnittutorsarefrompracticesthroughoutLondonandofferavarietyofapproachestoarchitecturaldesign.Theyaresupportedbyourtechnicalstaffwholiaisewithtutorsandstudentstoensurethatsufficientsupportisavailableatkeystagestodevelopthetechnicalaspectsoftheprojects.

BytheendoftheGraduateDiplomaCourse,youwillhavedevelopedyourunderstandingofthepoeticandtectonicaspectsofarchitecture,whilealsoinvolvingyourselfinKingston’smaininitiativeof‘thinkingthroughmaking’.

EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIESAnnuallyweofferfourexchangeplacestostudyinEuropeforonesemester:twoattheZürcherHochschuleinWinterthur,Switzerland;andtwoattheRoyalAcademyofFineArtsinCopenhagen.InZürichthelecturesareinGerman(HochDeutsch)butstudiosupervisionscanbeinEnglish;while,inCopenhagen,Denmark,allteachingisinEnglish.

Thecontextwithinwhicharchitectureiscreatedhaschangedsignificantlyinrecentyears,ashavethewaysinwhicharchitectureispractised.Ifyouwouldliketosharpenyourexistingskillsanddevelopnewskillsandstrategiesinthecomplexanddiversearenaofarchitecturalpractice,thiscourseisideal.Itenablesyoutotakethetimetore-informandredefineyourselfasanindependent,competentandreflectivepractitioner.

Kingston’sinnovativeanduniqueCreativeIndustries&theCreativeEconomyProgramme(MACE)hasbeendevelopedtoprovideyouwiththeunusualmixofcreativeskillsandkeenbusinessandleadershipacumennecessarytosucceedinthesethrivingindustries.

Bydrawingonourprovenexpertise,teachingandresearchexcellenceinthecreativearts,aswellasourexcellentlinkswithbusinessandindustry,wehavedevelopedauniqueportfolioofcoursesgroupedwithinfivespecialistindustrysectors:thebuiltenvironment,thedesignindustries,heritageandthevisualarts,themedia,andtheperformingarts.

Thetermcreativeeconomyhasbeencoinedtoreflecttheextraordinarygrowthintheimportanceofpeople’sideasandcreativityintoday’seconomy.This‘new’economyisfoundedoncreativityandthecreativeprocess.Crucially,itdependsupontherelationshipbetweenthosewhogeneratenewideasandthosewhocanhelptobuildvaluefromcreativity.Whetheryouarea‘creative’oramanager,whetheryouworkforanestablishedorganisationorplantosetupyourownentrepreneurialventure,theMACEProgrammeoffersyouanewperspectivefromwhichtostudyanddeveloptheskillsnecessarytoachievesuccess.

Thecoursesencouragehighlevelsofcreativity,networkingand‘learningbydoing’.Youwillengagefullyincollaborativeandmultidisciplinaryteamworkandshouldalsobepreparedtorespondtoindustry-generatedprojects.Attheendofthedegreeyouwillhavetheoptionoftakingadissertationorapractice-basedresearchproject,whichmayleadontothedevelopmentofyourownentrepreneurialcreativeventure.

Asapractitioneroramanagerwithinacreativeenterprise,youwillfindthatourcourseshavedirectrelevancethroughencouragingagreaterawarenessandunderstandingofthecreativevaluechainanditsassociatedpractices.ByundertakingacoursewithintheMACEProgrammeyouwilldevelopyourcreative,leadership,entrepreneurialandmanagementskillstoalevelwhereyoureallycanmakeadifferenceinthecreativeindustries–andacrossthecreativeeconomyasawhole.

COURSE OVERVIEWThe courses are delivered under Learning Agreements, each comprising three phases of 60 credits.

PHASE 1: THE CREATIVE ECONOMY – IN PRACTICE CORE MODULES (60 CREDITS)The Creative Economy Thiscornerstonemoduleprovidesyouwithhands-onexperienceoflifeinthecreativeeconomythroughworkingtogethertocreate,designandmanageaviablecreativeenterpriseproject.Thiscreativeprojectwillformthecontextforsubsequentlearningthroughoutthecourse.

Contemporary Issues in the Creative Economy Inthismoduleyouwilldevelopanunderstandingofcontemporaryissuesinthecreativeeconomy,withparticularreferencetoissuesofsustainability,therelationshipbetweenproductionandconsumptionandcriticalanalysis.

Managing Creativity and Innovation Thismoduleaimstodevelopyourentrepreneurialmanagementbehaviours,encouraginganapproachtolearningthatcopeswithandenjoysuncertainty,risksandcomplexity.Thecorecurriculumofthismodulewillexplorethetensionsbetweencreativityandmanagementandhowthesecanbereconciled.

Leadership in the Creative Economy Thismoduleencouragesyoutolearnexperientiallyaboutleadershipthroughperformance,anddevelopconceptualunderstandingofcreativeleadershipandhowitdiffersfrommoretraditionalapproaches.Whereappropriate,youwillapplyyourlearningtoleadershiprolesinthecreativeprojectdevelopedwithinTheCreativeEconomymodule.

Specificlearningoutcomesforeachstudentwillbeagreedwiththecoursedirector,andmayinvolvetaughtsessions,work-basedlearningoramixtureofboth.

COMMUNICATION DESIGNOUR COURSESTheSchoolofCommunicationDesignbelievesthat,asnewmodesandmethodsofvisualcommunicationcontinuetoemergeandevolve,workingpracticeswillmergeandmutate;thattoday’sartistsanddesignersarecrucialinaidingourunderstandingofthedeepcomplexitiesofmodernlife,andthattomorrow’sartistsanddesignersmustbeequippedwiththemindsetsandskillsetsthathaveacapacitytoevolve.

TheSchoolenjoysnationalandinternationalrecognitionandreputationacrossthebroadspectrumofcommunicationdesign,withcoursesingraphicdesignandphotography,illustrationandanimation,digitalmedia,filmmaking,curatingcontemporarydesign,screendesignforfilmandTV,andindesignforsustainabledevelopment.

MA/MFA COMMUNICATION DESIGN PROGRAMMEWith communication design becoming one of the fastest-changing sectors of the creative economy, Kingston University has introduced a suite of MFA (Master of Fine Arts) courses to complement its reviewed portfolio of MAs in communication design.

TheMFAallowsforamorein-depthstudyofyourspecialism,givingyoutheopportunitytotakeonthechallengeofalivebrief,whichwillbecustomisedanddevelopedwithaprofessionalindustryorganisationorpartner.Thisprojectwillequipyoutoaddressfuture-facingproblemsinthecreativeindustries,givingyouvital,real-worldexperiencethatwillstandyouingoodsteadforthedevelopmentofyourfuturecareer.

RESEARCH FOR THE 21ST CENTURYTheFacultyofArt,Design&Architecturehasawell-establishedandinternationallyrenownedresearchculturethatencouragesandsupportshigh-quality,innovativeresearchthroughpractice,historyandtheory.Thisrichspectrumencompassesthecriticalpracticesoffineartists,curatorsandculturalcommentatorsandhistorians,alongsidethatofdesigners,filmmakers,architects,townplannersandsurveyors,allofwhomhaveextensiveprofessional,industrialandcommerciallinks.Ouraimistofosteradynamicandstimulatingenvironmentthatrealisesandsupportsindividualandcollaborativeresearchprojects.Thisisachievedthroughanexchangeofideasandpracticeswithinandacrossthedisciplines,directlybenefittingthewideracademiccommunityaswellasindustry,businessandthepublic.

TheFaculty’sresearchactivitieswererecognisedasbeingworld-leadingandofinternationalexcellenceinthe2008nationalResearchAssessmentExercise,whichratesthequalityofallresearchinUKuniversities.ThisassessmenthasmeantthattheUniversity’sresearchgrantfromthehighereducationfundingbodyforEnglandhasnearlytripled.Centraltotheseachievementsareourfiveestablishedresearchcentresthatprovideastronginfrastructureandsupportivecommunityforstaffandstudentresearch.Ourpostgraduatestudentsareanimportantpartofthiscommunity,whichalsoincludestutorsandsupervisors,visitingprofessorsandresearchfellows.

ThestrengthoftheFaculty’sresearchhasbeenrecognisedthroughtheawardofanumberofprestigiousgrantsfromnationalresearchcouncils,includingtheArtsandHumanitiesResearchCouncil(AHRC)andtheEngineeringandPhysicalSciencesResearchCouncil(EPSRC).Significantfundinghasalsobeenawardedbyboththeprivateandthepublicsectors,includingtheformerDepartmentofTradeandIndustry(DTI),theArtsCouncil,HeritageLotteryfunding,theBritishAcademy,theBritishCouncilandtheRoyalInstitutionofCharteredSurveyors(RICS).Thesecompetitivelywongrantshaveenabledambitiousresearchprojects,suchastheCreativeResourcesprojectonrecycledmaterialsindesign;researchintocolour,designandtheenvironment;theMuybridgeinKingstoncollaboration;KingstonAfrica;theDoraGordineprojectbasedatDorichHouse;andcriticaldevelopmentsinindividualandcollaborativepracticeinfineart,designandthebuiltenvironment.

In2008,KingstonUniversity,inpartnershipwithStGeorge’s,UniversityofLondon,establishedanewcentrefordesignandinnovationwithaparticularfocusonbenefittingthehealthandculturalsectors.SituatedatKnightsPark,‘Innoversity’bringstogetherdesigners,researchersandengineerswhoworktogethertocomeupwithsolutionstoreal-lifebusinesschallenges.Ourpostgraduatestudentsparticipateintheseprojectsandalsobenefitfromtheopportunitiestobeinvolvedinliveprojectsthroughthewell-establishedindustrialandbusinesspartnershipsthathavecontributedtothecontinuingsuccessofresearchprojectsacrosstheFaculty.

Furtheropportunitiesareprovidedthroughourresearchcollaborationsestablishedwith,amongothers,theArchitectureFoundation,theDesignCouncil,theNationalMaritimeMuseum,theGeffryeMuseum,HistoricRoyalPalacesandTateBritain,aswellaswithinternationalpartners.

RESEARCH DEGREESWeofferMastersbyResearch,MPhilandPhDdegreesacrosstherangeofresearchareaswithintheFaculty.Thesebroadlyincludefineart,designandfilm;art,architecture,designandfilmhistory;museumandgallerystudies;landscapearchitecture;sustainableandenvironmentaldesign;curatingcontemporaryartanddesign;drawing;artsmarketappraisal;andsurveying,realestateandplanning.

AsaresearchstudentintheFacultyyouwillbecomepartofastrongandambitiouspostgraduatecommunityandwillbefullysupportedbyarichprogrammeofresearchtraining,includingresearchworkshops,seminars,guestlectures,symposia,exhibitionsandrelatedactivities.YouwillalsohaveaSchool-basedPhDdirectortoco-ordinatesubject-specifictraining.

MA/MSC BY RESEARCHThisflexiblelearningprogrammeallowsstudentstopursueanindividualprogrammeofresearchinanyfield,supportedbyresearchmethodstrainingandtaughtmodulesasappropriate.Thedegreeinvolvesinvestigationandevaluationofanapprovedresearchprojectandthepresentationofadissertationofbetween10,000and20,000wordsorequivalentforstudio-basedsubjects.TheawardofMAorMScbyResearchisatthesamelevelastheMPhil,butcarrieshalfthecredits(180).

Theprogrammelastsoneyearfulltimeortwoyearsparttime.Tobeeligibleyouwillneedagoodhonoursdegreeinarelateddiscipline.Applicationswillalsobeconsideredifyouhavenoformalqualificationsbutcansatisfytheadmissionstutorofyourmotivationandabilitytoworkatmasterslevel.

MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (MPHIL)TypicallyanMPhiltakesabouttwoyearsfulltimeorthree/fouryearsparttime.AnMPhilthesisis20–40,000wordslong,oritsequivalentforstudio-basedresearch,andisthesubjectofanoralexaminationinwhichyouwillshowhowyouhavecriticallymanagedandinvestigatedyourareaofresearch.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PHD)APhDusuallytakesthreetofouryearsoffull-timestudyorfourtosixyearsparttime.Youwillnormallybeexpectedtohaveamastersdegreeoragoodhonoursdegreeorequivalentinasubjectrelevanttoyourproposedresearchprogramme.

ThePhDthesisistypicallyabout40–80,000wordslong,oritsequivalentforstudio-basedresearch.Oncompletionitwillbethesubjectofanoralexaminationinwhichyouwillshowbothhowyouhavecriticallyinvestigatedyourareaofresearchandmadeanindependentandoriginalcontributiontoknowledge.

STANLEY PICKER GALLERYEstablishedin1997,theStanleyPickerGallery,basedattheFacultyofArt,Design&Architecture,holdsarollingprogrammeoflecturesandexhibitions.Itworkswithartists,designersandmusicianstofacilitateandprovideaccesstoabroadprogrammeofexhibitions,collaborativeprojects,mixed-mediaeventsandeducationinitiatives.TheStanleyPickerFellowshipProgrammeprovidesleadingfineartanddesignpractitionerswiththeopportunitytodevelopaninnovativeprojectofinternationalstanding,whichisthenpremieredattheGallery.Tofindoutmore,visitwww.kingston.ac.uk/picker

DORICH HOUSE MUSEUMDorichHouse,whichstandsontheKingstonsideofRichmondPark,isafascinatingexampleof1930s’modernism.Itwascreatedbytheunusualandbohemiancouple,sculptorDoraGordineandherhusbandRichardHare,whodesignedandlivedinthepropertyuntil1991.

Since1994,theGradeIIlistedbuildinghasbeenrenovatedandrestoredbyKingstonUniversity,whichnowcaresforthehouseandthecouple’sextensivecollectionsofsculptureandRussianImperialart.IthasbeendevelopedasaresourceandstudycentreandwasawardedRegisteredMuseumstatusin2004.
